Men and women in the church (1 Cor 11: 1-16) - Steve Vaughan by Christ City Church Dublin
What does the Bible really say about women in church leadership? In this episode of Jesus Every Day, we explore 1 Timothy 2:8-15—a passage that has sparked much discussion and debate. Understanding its historical and cultural background, particularly in Ephesus with the influence of the Temple of Artemis, helps shed light on Paul's instructions to Timothy. We'll unpack key questions: What did Paul mean about women learning in silence and teaching authority? How do we reconcile this passage with the many examples of women in ministry throughout Scripture? What does the puzzling phrase about "salvation through childbearing" really mean? We'll also explore two main interpretations—complementarian and egalitarian—and consider how to apply this passage in a way that honors God's Word and empowers both men and women to use their gifts for His kingdom. Join us as we dive deep into Scripture, seeking clarity, wisdom, and confidence in engaging with God's Word—every single day. God graced His Church with women like Priscilla, Lois, Eunice, Phoebe, Lydia, and many others (Romans 16) who are great examples of fellow-laborers in ministry.
I really appreciated the writings of Melissa Wei-Tsing Inouye, as she was such a powerful women scholar and writer in the Church. A few months before her passing, I read her final book, titled “Sacred Struggle: Seeking Christ on the Path of Most Resistance.” I was profoundly impacted by the book and Melissa's vulnerability in her writing. I never met her personally but read her work on women and religion. She passed away in April of 2024 at 44 years of age. When I read hard copies of books, I highlight them and have an assistant type them up, so I have 12 pages of notes! I thought I would share some of the passages I really appreciate. Lauretta hosts the program solo. Mary joins her to chat regarding the Catholic Women being recognized within the Church. Lauretta chats about the wildfires in California and draws similarities to the Peshtigo Fire of 1871 in Champion Wisconsin, where the National Shrine of our Lady sits. Sister Adele, who had witnessed the apparitions of Our Lady in 1859 on this very land, prayed in the chapel as the fires burned and the fire did not breach the picket white fence to the chapel. Not only did I think this detour would give folks a chance to purchase the book and read it without rushing (if they wanted to deep dive with me), I also feel like this conversation adds some super helpful historical context to the soul care/formation aspect of our discussion. Plus… this episode was burning a hole in my pocket and I couldn't sit on it any longer. Dr. Barr is the author of The Making of Biblical Womanhood, which you should absolutely read too. She's a professor at Baylor and a bit of a celebrity in the evangelical world because of her research and communication around women's historical role in the Church1. That's also why Dr. Barr has been a target for those committed to preserving a patriarchal hierarchy and even folks who want to continue this deeply harmful trench warfare approach to gender roles in Jesus' movement. The subtitle of her book is “how the subjugation of women became gospel truth,” and that's so powerful because it speaks to a critical reality of women's roles in the church: it wasn't always like this. As a historian, she presents compelling evidence that this concept of “biblical womanhood” we see expressed in the vast majority of evangelical church cultures is not what Jesus intended. Nor was it the way the early church operated. If we listen to Dr. Barr, women were never intended to be subordinate to men or limited in their calling to fulfill the Great Commission. Our conversation explored some of The Making of Biblical Womanhood but also its reception… specifically how the aftermath affected Dr. Barr herself. And it wasn't great. The way people talked and continue to talk to her is appalling. Just taking a peek at her mentions is to stare into the void. Hundreds of men (and women) spouting some of the ugliest, un-Christlike nonsense. Which underscores the need for a better way to have the conversations around women in ministry. I truly believe listening to Dr. Barr won't only shift your perspective, it also equip and empower you to follow Jesus and read Scripture in a different way.

Does Paul teach that women are not equal? No. Does he teach that women must be under authority? YesDoes he teach that women have less value in church matters? No.But Paul does teach that even among the Trinity there is a hierarchy, and an authority structure -- and that extends to our families as well as to the local church. We all -- men and women -- have important roles to play in our churches.

In this episode, we dive into the ongoing conversation about the role of women in the church, exploring why this topic remains relevant and contentious. Rev. Gracie Millard and Rev. Karen Chraska, two experienced female pastors, share their insights on the historical and biblical perspectives that have shaped women's positions in ministry. We discuss the progress made in recent years, the challenges that still exist, and the importance of advocating for gender equality within church leadership. Through personal stories and professional expertise, they provide a nuanced look at how women continue to impact and shape the church today, and why the conversation about their roles is far from over.
