Beth Nielsen Chapman is a Nashville-based singer-songwriter who has recorded hits of her own and written hits for a multitude of artists (to name a few, Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Bette Midler, Trisha Yearwood, Willie Nelson, and Waylon Jennings). She has won numerous awards and was nominated for a Grammy in 1999. Her most recent album, “Crazytown,” was released in 2022, and recently, a song from that album, Put a Woman in Charge, went viral. In addition, Beth is an inspirational speaker, a workshop leader, and a lecturer on the magic of creativity. Some of her songs are rooted in deep personal experience of grief and loss (she's lost two husbands to cancer). Her best-known song, Sand and Water,” was famously performed by Elton John in memory of Princess Diana. We spoke about the spiritual alchemy of both grief and creativity (songwriting in particular). A (relatively) in-depth analysis of British, singer/songwriter Judie Tzuke in just under thirty minutes.Judie Tzuke was born Judie Myers in 1956. She is best known for her 1979 hit 'Stay with Me till Dawn', which reached number 16 on the UK singles chart.Tzuke's family relocated from Poland to England in the 1920s, and changed their surname from Tzuke to Myers, like other Jewish families from Eastern Europe. Judie preferred the original family name, using it at school and later as her stage name. She was educated in the visual arts, performing arts, and music, performing in folk clubs from the age of 15. Tzuke's career as a solo artist began in 1977, when she signed to Elton John's Rocket Record Company. Her first single on Rocket, 'For You', was released in 1978.In 1982 Tzuke headlined the Glastonbury Festival and in 1996 she launched her own label, Big Moon Records. In 2008 she released her sixteenth studio album, Songs 2. The same year, she co-wrote four tracks with Morcheeba, and featured as a vocalist on two tracks from their Dive Deep album. In 2018, Tzuke joined with Beverley Craven and Julia Fordham to record 'Safe', a song that she had written with Beth Nielsen Chapman. An album was released titled Woman to Woman, together with a tour of the same name in the same year. From October 2024 to January 2025, Tzuke took her 'Jude The Unsinkable Tour' to a selection of dates around the UK. She was joined by T.I.G.Y, comprising of Bailey Tzuke and Matt Racher who opened for her as well as accompanied her during her set. In this episode I am in conversation with Dr. Andrew Webber.I hope you enjoy the podcast and do leave feedback if you like what you have heard.Mathew Woodall

For hour 2, we welcomed an internationalist quartet based in Barcelona in S. Taki, who are led by Sergio Taki and accompanied by Nacho Padron, Diego Gonzalez, and Tommy Min. Beth Nielsen Chapman is a songwriter's songwriter. She began writing before she had any idea that it could be a career; it was just something that came naturally to her. When she first started out, there was no way to possibly imagine just how important songs would become in her journey - both professionally and personally. Here she talks about that journey, which includes writing songs for Martina McBride, Willie Nelson, Tanya Tucker, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Crystal Gayle, Juice Newton, Bette Midler, and most famously co-writing Faith Hill's hit song “This Kiss”. She has released sixteen albums as a solo artist as well. Along the way, she also talks about processing grief and loss through music (and making music through grief). We spoke only weeks after her second husband, Bob passed away. Her first husband, Ernest, died in 1994. She also tells the stories behind many of her hit songs, and lays out her philosophy of creativity and craft, including what it means to “write from the center of your truth,” channeling humanity's “collective wisdom” and what it means to have “investment without attachment” in songwriting. Beth's most recent album, Crazy Town came out in 2022. www.third-story.com www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story www.patreon-com/thirdstorypodcast

The recent loss of Olivia Newton-John shook the world and brought a tidal wave of grief and appreciation for this talented and beloved superstar. Back in 2017, I was fortunate enough to have her come into my home studio for a very special interview. I just can't describe what it feels like to have Olivia Newton-John walk into your house! She was one of the kindest, most genuine people I have ever met. No stranger to grief and loss in her own life, Olivia and I talked about her album for those experiencing grief called 'Liv On' with bandmates Amy Sky and Beth Nielsen Chapman. We are also, of course, chatted about 'Grease', her iconic career, played a super fun game and got a mini performance at the end. Every moment of that day was a dream come true. Rest well, sweet Olivia. As you soar with the angels, we hope you feel the outpouring of love and gratitude for your phenomenal spirit and iconic art. I, along with countless others, honestly love you. To see the video version of this interview or any of our other interviews, head over to aspoonfulofpaolo.com or our YouTube channel. It's been ten years since the writer and activist Laura Bates founded the Everyday Sexism project, giving a platform to thousands of women to document their everyday experiences of sexism, harassment and assault. In her new book, ‘Fix the System Not the Women' she argues we have wasted decades telling women and girls how to fix things, how to fix themselves, how to stay safe, it hasn't worked because women were never the problem in the first place. She is calling for systematic reform of our key institutions and societal systems that she says are failing to protect women. Spanish women with severe Menstrual symptoms could be entitled to three days of leave a month - extended to five in some circumstances - if a draft bill going through the Spanish parliament is approved. It would make it the first legal entitlement of its kind in Europe. The bill is part of a package of reforms that could also overturn laws passed by the previous government, including 16 and 17 year old girls no longer needing parental consent to have an abortion. About two-thirds of the way through the bishop's homily, we experienced a failure of the recording equipment, so Catholic Forum host, Bob Krebs, reads the conclusion of the homily from the text. Also, Father Rich Jasper (who never has recording equipment failure), will present another Modern Day Witness.

Canciones escogidas. It’s hard to know where to start when talking about our next great artist. And it wasn’t a surprise to Hallways when Joe Spaulding asked Kevin Roosevelt Moore, Aka Keb’ Mo’, to be an honorary Chair at the FARHOF.Over 25 years, Keb’ Mo’ has collected 5 GRAMMY Awards for his Blues-meets-Americana Signature sound. If you haven’t had the pleasure to hear his work in action, just picture a musical cross between the legendary blues of Robert Johnson and infectious groove of Jack JohnsonKeb’ Mo’ will connect with you at his show, or even on film. He’s collaborated with some of the most talented and respected artists and directors of our time. And when President Obama invites you to perform at “A celebration of American creativity” at the White House along with the likes of Buddy Guy, James Taylor, Usher, Carol Burnett and Esperanza Spalding... you’re in pretty good company. We sat with Mr. Moore at Berklee School of Music and talked about putting musicians into musical buckets, collaborative writing and how women need to be in charge. We look forward to having our honorary Chair, GRAMMY winning, Blues-Americana guest Keb’ Mo’ join us someday at the FARHOF / Boch Center, and we hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did.

International superstar and multiple Grammy Award-winner Olivia Newton-John, with her friends Grammy nominee Beth Nielsen Chapman and SOCAN Award-winner Amy Sky, joined forces to create LIV ON, a collaborative, eleven-song collection which focuses on uplifting hearts burdened by grief while at the same time bring comfort to the listener. Olivia Newton-John and her collaborators sit down with Randy to talk about the new album intended to aid & comfort those experiencing grief and loss while using the power of music to heal. This inspiring new project grew out of the three artists' personal experiences with loss and illness, which they all survived to “LIV ON” and celebrate each day with a depth of gratitude. “LIV ON” – means “to thrive, to have hope and to remember.” The message is clear in the lyrics of the album's title song: Live on, Live on Brighter skies will come again Cry the tears you cry And then live on, live on Love is all we leave when we are gone...Live on Loss and grief occur for many reasons - whether it's losing a loved one, a relationship, one's health, a pet, or a job, to name just a few. It's important to remember that each person's grief is as individual as his or her DNA – and there truly is no timeline for healing from loss. Olivia, Beth and Amy called upon their personal experiences in creating this collection of songs which will aid, uplift and comfort those working their way through the maze of grief and loss.

In this episode of the Casey Stratton Audio Podcast I discuss last week's State of the Union address in the U.S. and then talk a little about the Grammys. This digresses into a conversation about commercialism vs. artistry. I then go on to talk about my new release, Artifacts: Memories and Photographs B-Sides Volume Two before playing Beyond the Pale, from that release, on the guitar. Music recommendation is Beth Nielsen Chapman's Sand and Water. One of America's finest undiscovered singer-songwriters, Chapman lost her husband to cancer in 1995, and this emotionally rich collection details her process of loss, reconciliation, and healing. Jim Ed Norman's strong production ranges from piano-based ballads ("The Color of Roses," "No One Knows But You") to exuberant rootsy pop (lead single "Happy Girl," "All the Time in the World"). This is music with a tender grasp on the big picture. --Jeff BatemanBuy Artifacts in my DIGITAL MUSIC STOREBuy Beth Nielsen Chapman's Sand and Water on iTunesBuy Beth Nielsen Chapman's Sand and Water on Amazonemail me a question at podcasts@caseystratton.comListen to Podcast #45
