I sit down with public historian Emma Cieslik (she/her) to hear all about her Queer and Catholic Oral History Project, supported by the Pacific School of Religion. For Emma, the word catholic is truly "universal" — she's interviewed Roman Catholics and folk Catholics, ex-Catholics and "it's complicated" Catholics, queer religious and lay folk. In documenting these diverse perspectives, Emma is preserving the beautiful breadth of queer Catholic stories and gifts so that no one can claim they don't exist. Click here to view the project's webpage. Rev. Kathi McShane, a retired United Methodist pastor, and Rabbi Elan Babchuck, a millennial, experienced an immediate connection when they met, a Spirit connection that made them fast friends from the beginning. In this episode, they share how their friendship naturally manifested in Picking Up the Pieces: Leadership After Empire. They discuss the vision of the book, moving away from the pyramid model of leadership where power is centered around one person or a group of people and towards a shared power where every person can stretch toward the fullness of their God-given gifts, regardless of where they land on an organizational chart. Their vision of leadership, born of their friendship, shows how holy friendship truly benefits not only those in the friendship but blesses the whole world.Poem from the Podcast“Red Brocade” by Naomi Shihab NyeThe Arabs used to say,When a stranger appears at your door, feed him for three daysbefore asking who he is,where he's come from, where he's headed. That way, he'll have strengthenough to answer.Or, by then you'll besuch good friendsyou don't care.Let's go back to that.Rice? Have you ever felt the weight of fear when your spirituality seems to contradict your identity? This episode addresses the intricate relationship between faith and queerness, as we delve into the profound emotions and experiences that come with growing up queer in the church. Dr. Bernard Schlager, associate professor of Historical and Cultural Studies and Executive Director of the Center for LGBTQ and Gender Studies in Religion at Pacific School of Religion, joins me to share his valuable insights on this topic. We dissect not only the conflicts and tensions within religious spaces but also explore the potentialities of queer spirituality, how religious texts can be interpreted, and the importance of creating safe faith exploratory spaces for queer individuals. This genuine exploration of the queer experience within the context of spirituality and religion aims to instigate conversations, questions, and a broader understanding of the intersection between queerness and faith. What does it mean to find comfort and community in faith as a queer individual? We examine the need for open and inclusive religious spaces, the complexities of interpreting religious texts concerning queer identities, and how easily differing beliefs can be demonized. Also, we reflect on the invaluable role of pastoral care for the queer community, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and celebrating queer people as valuable members of religious communities. Tune in for an enlightening dialogue that bridges the seemingly disparate worlds of queerness and faith. In this episode, Fred shares how, as we work deeply with our bodies – which he sees as “the clay of God” – we can begin to contact the karma and suffering of our ancestors, the psychic and spiritual wounds that have been stored in our tissues and transmitted through our DNA. By entering into the somatic world, we can go on a journey of transformation that heals not only our personal ancestors but the collective human condition – allowing a fresh, new world to open up for ourselves and for our communities. In this episode, we'll cover: how sacred bodywork is a portal to the ancestral realm how to see the body as the onramp into the unconscious how to remove the obstacles to emotional flow how to reveal the meta-story behind the stories we tell ourselves how conscious loving touch can transform human suffering into the foundation of a more humane society   I invite you to check out the trailer for Fred's documentary, Grounding Light. This week the Army base Fort Lee, located in Central Virginia will be renamed to Fort Gregg-Adams. The fort was originally named for Confederate General Robert E. Lee in 1917 and is located on historic grounds where European settlers first met the Powhatan Confederation in 1607 and where Captain John Smith set up some of the first plantations along the James River. Located only thirty minutes from the capitol of the Confederacy, Fort Lee is one of many military installations trying to write the wrongs of the past and bring in a new era in America that no longer celebrates those who took up arms against America. Some Army bases, established in the build-up and during World War I, were named for Confederate officers in an effort to court support from local populations in the South. That the men for whom the bases were named had taken up arms against the government they had sworn to defend was seen by some as a sign of reconciliation between the North and South. It was also the height of the Jim Crow Laws in the South, so there was no consideration for the feelings of African Americans who had to serve at bases named after men who fought to defend slavery. This week we have a thought-provoking interview with Reverend Robert W. Lee, the the collateral descendant of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. In this episode, Reverend Lee shares his personal journey of grappling with his family's complicated legacy and the role it played in America's history. As an author, activist, and public theologian, he discusses how he came to terms with his relationship to Robert E. Lee, how his activism has been received by his family and the wider community, and his thoughts on how we can move forward as a society and reconcile with our past. This interview is a must-listen for anyone interested in issues of racial justice, reconciliation, and the legacy of the Civil War.Guest Bio:The Reverend Robert Wright Lee, IV (Rob) is an author, activist, commentator, and preacher. Rev. Adriene Thorne incorporates art and creativity into all aspects of her life, including her faith and her leadership as the Senior Pastor of The Riverside Church in NYC. She talks with us about the importance and value of incorporating play and a childlike spirit into our daily lives, to stay grounded amidst the chaos of the world. As she discovered and gave herself permission to incorporate art and play into her ministry, we also hear about how she discovered the Pacific School of Religion to be a place for her to explore what that could really look like. Rev. Thorne utilizes those same concepts and values in her sermons at Riverside Church, as the first Black woman to serve as Senior Minister there. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Peter Rios, author, leadership consultant, professor at the Pacific School of Religion, and Ignite's Academic Director, to learn what he discovered about himself that led him to shift from teaching in churches to teaching in classrooms and within organizations. He talks with us about the limited voices and representation in higher education and the corporate sector, and what it takes to bring justice and equity to these spaces. He highlights the importance of seeking out coaches or mentors from marginalized spaces, so people of color can continue to do the hard work of justice for human flourishing and organizational thriving. We learn how white supremacy doesn't just harm people of color, and the importance of us all fighting for a more just, equitable world for all. Dr. Rios' book: Untold Stories: The Latinx Leadership Experience in Higher Education Website: https://www.peterriosconsulting.com/To get more content like this and learn more about ignite and PSR go to psr.edu.

Rev. Tom Emanuel (he/him/his) was born and raised on sacred Lakota land in the Paha Sapa (Black Hills) of South Dakota, which is where his father first read The Hobbit aloud to him when he was too young to remember it. Tom was trained as a social scientist at the University of South Dakota and as a theologian at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA. He is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and, beginning in Fall 2022, a doctoral student at the University of Glasgow where his research will focus on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, fandom, and post-Christian spiritual community. When he's not reading Tolkien aloud to his two small children, Tom can usually be found hiking, singing, or working away at a fantasy novel of his own.
