1/23/25 - Dr. Monica Miller is a nationally known pro-life leader, having been involved in the pro-life movement since 1976. She is the founder of Citizens for a Pro-life Society and author of several articles published on theological subjects and life-issues. Her work has appeared in This Rock, The National Catholic Register, Homiletic and Pastoral Review, The New Oxford Review, Fidelity Magazine, and Crisis Magazine. Since 1976, Monica Miller has made it her life's work to defend the unborn: she has counseled pregnant women outside abortion clinics and organized pro-life groups and sit-ins at many of those same clinics. She has blocked abortionists' cars, been arrested, and gone to jail. And she has pulled the bodies of thousands of unborn babies out of dumpsters and given them a proper burial. Abandoned: The Untold Stories of the Abortion Wars is the story of those children abandoned by abortion, and it is the story of their courageous defenders. It tells the profound, breathtaking, and often daring journey of one woman, but it is much more than that. It is a history of the Pro-Life movement since Roe vs. Wade, a suspenseful, true-life tale of life and death, an insightful look into the unique and terrible horror of abortion, and a plea for the protection of the most helpless and innocent members of the human family. Sam Sawyer, S.J., editor-in-chief of America Media, returns to “Preach” to discuss his Advent homily series, designed to be more cohesive than the usual week-to-week, stand-alone Sunday homilies that preachers typically prepare. Sam shares with host Ricardo da Silva, S.J., how Pope Francis' latest encyclical, Dilexit Nos, inspired him to create these homilies for the season, specially commissioned for Homiletic & Pastoral Review. Over the four weeks, Sam leads the congregation through a four-part reflection on the heart: awakening the heart, trusting its activity and passion, recognizing our heart's capacity to desire something greater, and embracing God's grace in our heart as it overflows from within us Read the full text of this week's homily and Scripture readings. Mother Miriam Live - December 19, 2023 An 1891 homily from Bishop Ehrler regarding the Fourth Sunday of Advent I noticed at a certain parish, occasionally people will receive Holy Communion by taking the host and then bringing it to an Extraordinary Minister to dip the host in the Precious Blood prior to consuming it. Is this practice of “self-serve” intinction condoned by the Church? If not, what should I do if I am serving as an Extraordinary Minister and someone approaches with such an intent? If we were to discover that life existed on other planets, how might that affect our Catholic beliefs? For example, would we have to say that Jesus is the redeemer of those beings as well? I am not a Catholic, and one of your beliefs which I do not understand is your concept of original sin. Why should I think that I have inherited a sin committed by someone else so many years ago? How can I be guilty of a sin that I did not commit?

Homiletic is an adjective that means related to preaching or writing a sermon.  The Greek word homilia (ho MEAL ee uh) means ‘to converse with.' In time, this word gave birth to the English word homily which referred to a sermon or a story with a religious meaning. Homiletic has been with us since the mid 17th century. Example: I enjoyed the story my dad told me about his days as a young hunter. But it seemed to be the stories had no moral. They may have had a greater impact had they had more of a homiletic purpose.

The 2022 Pulitzer Prize-winning composition will be featured at a special service next Sunday, October 30 at 10am, along with a homiletic solo performance by the composer. Free admission. Earlier this year, Raven Chacon became the first Native American composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music, for his Voiceless Mass. The piece, which was premiered by Present Music in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on November 21, 2021, is a meditation on the meaning of voicelessness, both in the context of grand physical spaces (churches and cathedrals) and instruments (the pipe organ), as well the historic and ongoing silencing of oppressed peoples by those in positions of privilege. As the composer writes: “[Voiceless Mass] considers the futility of giving voice to the voiceless, when ceding space is never an option for those in power.” Voiceless Mass, for pipe organ and chamber ensemble (solo strings, winds, percussion, recorded sine tones), will be presented as part of a special Sunday worship service at Claremont United Church of Christ. It will be the third public performance of the work (following the 2021 Milwaukee premiere and a performance in Toronto on September 30 of this year). The service will also include a solo homiletic performance, conceived for the occasion by the composer. Claremont United Church of Christ (CUCC), lead producer of the event, invites all to attend this special service, which is open to the public and free of charge. Voiceless Mass will be co-conducted by CUCC co-Directors of Music and Fine Arts, Alexandra Grabarchuk and David Rentz. Orchestra Collective of Orange County and the Scripps College Music Department have provided additional artistic and production support for the performance of Voiceless Mass. It's Natural Family Planning (NFP) Awareness Week in the US, so Dominic and Paul talk about NFP in light of the Church's teaching about the individual consciences and the law of gradualism. Paul also shares some of his personal experience with NFP and being a part of the NFP subculture. “We have long thought that simply by stressing doctrinal, bioethical and moral issues, without encouraging openness to grace, we were providing sufficient support to families, strengthening the marriage bond and giving meaning to marital life. We find it difficult to present marriage more as a dynamic path to personal development and fulfillment than as a lifelong burden. We also find it hard to make room for the consciences of the faithful, who very often respond as best they can to the Gospel amid their limitations, and are capable of carrying out their own discernment in complex situations. We have been called to form consciences, not to replace them” (Pope Francis, Amoris Laetitia). The content for this episode comes from an article Paul wrote in 2020 for Homiletic & Pastoral Review: https://www.hprweb.com/2020/12/the-sweetness-of-the-yoke-of-christ/ ABOUT POPE FRANCIS GENERATION Pope Francis Generation is the show for Catholics struggling with the Church's teaching, who feel like they might not belong in the Church anymore, and who still hunger for a God of love and goodness. What makes Catholic schools what they are? What's the secret to their success? Dominican Sister, Sr. Maria Catherine, shares her insights about the exceptional qualities students and their families are finding as they make their way in large numbers to Catholic schools, many for the first time. A product of the public school system herself, Sister explains the reticence she had to Catholic education – even after she made her religious vows – and the surprise she experienced when she finally saw firsthand what Catholic schools were all about. Listen in as she unpacks the unique model of forming students for lifelong happiness that are at the center of JSerra and all strong Catholic schools. ABOUT THE GUEST Sr. Maria Catherine, O.P. is from the great state of Texas. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin, she worked in various industries but mainly banking and administration before entering the convent. Sister has traveled widely and has been one of a few representatives of her community on The Oprah Winfrey Show. She is a published author in the Catholic San Francisco, The Imaginative Conservative, and Homiletic and Pastoral Review. She loves teaching English and Theology and continues to be grateful for the opportunity to study Aquinas at Ave Maria University. She is currently teaching English at JSerra Catholic High School.

Today’s word of the day is homiletic. It’s spelled H-O-M-I-E-T-I-C. Homiletic is an adjective that means related to preaching. Our word of the day’s journey begins with the Ancient Greek word homilos (HO me los) which meant crowd or assembly. This word later morphed into homily, ‘a short sermon.’ Anything related to a homily may be called homiletic. Sandy’s pep talk at the meeting got everybody fired up. Not only did she motivate us, but her homiletic language helped us understand the moral guidelines we needed to follow.

Many of you know that my own mother, whose sufferings and offerings on my behalf returned me to the Faith, suffered enormously from mental illness. She had crippling bipolar depression as well as acute obsessive-compulsive disorder — massive crosses not only for her, but for the whole family. Her mental pains were likely brought on by an occasion when she was just 20, where she was brutally raped by her father in law while my father was temporarily away on short-term military duty. He had married her in England and, a few months later, brought his new bride back to his hometown near Dayton, Ohio, as he was decommissioning from the U.S. Air Force. I knew none of this until the evening of the day when my father and I buried my mom — and my dad unburdened himself of a torturous secret he kept for over 50 years. That rape became the unknown, quiet horror at the center of our family, its tentacles reaching into every aspect of our lives and emotionally crippling my mother. Through it all, it was the Faith of her childhood, instilled in her by fiercely-Catholic Irish parents, which kept her hanging on, and, yes, sometimes it was by the barest of threads. It was only years afterward that I learned from her that, while I was in high school one afternoon, she sat on the edge of the bed with a lethal amount of sleeping pills in her hand — ready to end the pain of her life. Faith kept her hanging on, sometimes by the barest of threads. A split moment before she ingested them, she had the inspiration to call information (411 for those of you who remember those days) and be connected to a random parish — where a priest actually answered the phone. I have no idea who that priest was, but he was able to convince my mom to put the pills down, speaking with her about eternity. I share this with you to underscore that, in the end, the only real cure for a soul afflicted with mental anguish is God. Current psychotherapy has been completely divorced from the Divine for decades, and it is the patients who suffer even more as a result. Because of the increase in mental problems (which are, at their base, problems in the soul), Church Militant has produced a brand new Premium program on mental health. Our expert is Thomistic psychologist Dr. G.C. Dilsaver, a man so respected in his field Catholic University Press said of him, in 2007, he "is rightly considered by many to be the father of Christian psychology." Dr. Dilsaver has been around the field a long time and published a book on dealing with mental pain, Imago Dei Psychotherapy. One of the most reliable priests you will ever meet, Fr. Kenneth Baker, editor of Homiletic and Pastoral Review for years, said of the book: In this treatise on clinical psychology, we find a current presentation which is fully in accord with traditional scholastic philosophy and theology. The whole Catholic worldview of man, made in the image of God, a composite being of spirit and matter, is the philosophical basis of Imago Dei Psychotherapy. This is an invaluable tool for Catholic counselors, psychologists and psychiatrists whose goal it is to bring their therapants to a state of mental health which is in accord with both the natural law and divine revelation. It would be foolish to think that every institution except the field of mental health has been invaded by anti-Christian forces. Of course it has been invaded. Nothing has escaped the taint and stench of the diabolical. And, just as in the field of media (like us here at Church Militant and many other faithful Catholics laboring in their own fields of expertise), it will be faithful Catholics that will help restore and claim back what the Devil has so thoroughly corrupted. Psychology is no exception. Even before the COVID scamdemic, countless people suffered from mental illness. New episodes of our Premium program on mental health and the Catholic life come out each Friday every week, and, of course, all of them are available for viewing at any time for Premium members. This newest show (Mental Health: Catholic Perspective) carries the very message that convinced my mother to put down those pills and pick up her Cross, as mightily heavy as it was. Catholicism is life, eternal life, and it is this Faith which teaches us that pain is temporary. Victory is forever.
