“Are you surrounded by people that you can lean into? Are you surrounded by people that remind you of what's true and real, even when you forget?”- Lola WrightWhen I first faced the challenge of having to change my language and the title of this very podcast, I felt deep resistance. But through the power of my practice, my support system, and a little bit of good legal counsel, I'm ready to let go and create something new.On this final episode of Find Your Fierce & Loving, I say goodbye to this wonderful iteration of this community, and turn towards the one that is already emerging. “You and I are not here to suffer. We are not here to struggle. But those are always available if you want to pick them up.” - Lola WrightIt's tempting to find problems everywhere. In our personal lives, communities, and the world at large, it seems like you can't go through a day without seeing roadblocks in your way. But while it's easy to find issues, you cannot solve problems at the level of consciousness that created that problem. This week on Find Your Fierce & Loving, we're deconstructing the way that we perceive issues in our lives. It is possible to move through the present moment with curiosity and grace. Are you willing to accept that just maybe, every problem we perceive is manufactured by fear in the human condition?(00:54) - Looking for problems(06:30) - Present moment acceptance(13:42) - What if there are no problems?Do you want to unleash your inherent love and goodness, liberate yourself, and free humanity from the oppressive systems and structures we have created? “The gift of change is that it exposes everything that's going on beneath the surface.” - Lola WrightI live by a principle that I learned in volleyball: keep your knees loose and move your hips. You never know when a ball is going to be hit your way, and you have to be ready to respond with purpose. On this episode of Find Your Fierce & Loving, I reflect on the process of moving into the new Logan Square space. “There will be obstacles along the way, and the question then becomes, who will you be in the midst of it?” - Lola WrightI am so excited to celebrate the beautiful new Logan Square space with my husband and our community. Not that long ago, however, it looked like this new chapter wouldn't work out after all. We almost lost the chance to buy the property when we were faced with an argumentative lawyer who seemed to be looking for a fight. This week on Find Your Fierce & Loving, I explore the ways that this world tries to teach us that a fight is necessary. Instead of joining a fight in anger, or passively rolling over, what can you do to be of service in these scenarios? How can you stay true to yourself and facilitate a better outcome for everyone? Join me in reflecting on these questions, and stay tuned until the end for a very special invitation to the new space on August 21-22!(00:54) - Closing on the new space(06:21) - Facing obstacles(12:33) - Conviction(16:20) - Welcome to the spaceDo you want to unleash your inherent love and goodness, liberate yourself, and free humanity from the oppressive systems and structures we have created? “When we're living a life that is responding to vision, when we're surrendering to the big idea of life in, as, and through us, we're not listening for what's probable, we're listening for what's possible.” - Lola WrightOnce I got on board with Nathan's vision for his business, I was eager to help and be part of making this next step in our lives a reality. “There's an instinct right now on planet Earth for identity groups to be turning inwards, as if that inward turn will protect us from oppression. And that's the move that we as Jewish people, but also all groups as human people on this planet, need to be turning towards each other.” - Rabbi LizziWhen Rabbi Lizzi Heydemann was growing up, she identified her family as German and Polish, since her grandparents had immigrated from those areas of Europe. However, when she visited Germany, she saw the contrast between a German identity and a Jewish identity. Between those early visits and her role now as a Jewish leader she went on a journey of discovering culture, privilege, oppression, and all of the ways those intersect in her life. That journey, and the others like it that she guides her community members through, continues to this day.Listen in to this week's Find Your Fierce & Loving to hear about how identities can be both empowering and limiting. Human beings have infinite potential for collaboration and discoveries—if they properly invest in themselves and others.(03:41) - Race and identity(23:10) - Relationships(29:26) - LoveRabbi Lizzi Heydemann is the founding rabbi of Mishkan Chicago, an independent, post-denominational Jewish spiritual community in the city of Chicago. She grew up on the South Side of the city and graduated with Honors in Religious Studies and Philosophy from Stanford University, and was ordained by the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in Los Angeles. Rabbi Lizzi currently serves as the senior Rabbi and Founder of Mishkan Chicago, where she leads services, guides the organization's vision, and hosts the podcast Contact Chai, a podcast that features weekly sermons and inspired, down-to-earth Judaism in conversation. Outside of Mishkan, she currently sits on the board of T'ruah: the Rabbinic Call for Human Rights and the first rabbi to be a part of the Chicago Commons Project, a program run by the University of Chicago School of Divinity that cultivates a cohort of the city's faith leaders. She was named one of Jewish Women International's Women to Watch in 2018 and is a frequent presenter at conferences nationally on prayer leadership and revitalizing Jewish communities. She is married to Henry Bernstein, and is the mother of two children under 4, Judah Lev and Adira Hannah.Do you want to unleash your inherent love and goodness, liberate yourself, and free humanity from the oppressive systems and structures we have created? “I am committed to seeing everything in my life as fodder for my own evolution. So when I'm met with resistance, what's the gift?” - Lola WrightIt's easy to live in a reactive state, chasing what we're told to chase and constantly worrying about the past and future. “Sharing my story actually had the opposite effect. It opened up this whole other culture for me in terms of having platforms to share my experience on.” - Kelley KitleyAfter Kelly Kitley struggled in her relationship with alcohol for years, she decided to stop drinking altogether. She discovered that there are many communities to support sobriety, that there are practically infinite reasons people choose not to drink, and that the mainstream narrative on alcohol doesn't cover so many experiences. Kelley channeled her own experiences with alcohol, sexual violence, and mental illness into a stunning memoir that has expanded her therapeutic practice into public advocacy work as well as one-on-one treatment. This week on Find Your Fierce & Loving, Lola and Kelley dive into their relationships with alcohol, intimate partnerships, and their shared Oak Park neighborhood. “Any time you are creating something new, destruction is present.” - Lola WrightWhen I spoke about the heartbreak of the new at Bodhi Center sixteen months ago, I didn't know how much was about to change for all of us. But while that time feels like a lifetime ago, we had the same concerns that we have now—the role of social media in changing our world, the danger of resting in inertia, and how to consciously rise above the circumstances of our lives. The process of creating something new requires destruction, and you may naturally be tempted right now to return to your former life as quickly as possible. However, we deserve better than that, and we have the power to rise above those old ways.On this week's Find Your Fierce & Loving, we investigate our patterns that aren't serving us anymore. Listen in to learn how to handle the discomfort that comes from breaking those patterns and daring to create something new.(01:50) - Looking at the world(09:30) - When things fall apartDo you want to unleash your inherent love and goodness, liberate yourself, and free humanity from the oppressive systems and structures we have created? “Books change lives. Books can create a movement in people. And when people are moved, they are able to change the world.” - Angela EngelAngela Engel doesn't let anyone tell her no. When she didn't have the right job for her, she convinced a publisher to make a position for her. When everyone in the publishing industry told her “this is just how it's done,” she founded The Collective Book Studio to shake up timelines, nurture talent, and give stories to the audiences that need them. In 2020, Angela used those same skills and mindset to create and distribute PPE for communities across the country. As the grandchild of Holocaust survivors, Angela feels called to make noise and do good. Listen to this week's episode of Find Your Fierce & Loving to hear what that means to her and how she's taken her principles and made them a reality.(02:32) - Expertise(11:34) - Disruption(20:35) - Call to serve(39:30) - Collective Book StudioWhen Angela Engel launched The Collective Book Studio she wanted to build a different kind of publishing business, one that adhered to the author's vision every step of the way. Her experience in traditional publishing allows her to introduce beautiful books into the world, and she brings her passion for reading and sharing new ideas into every new project she undertakes. Angela grew up in Minneapolis, MN, and now calls Oakland, CA, home. For many years she worked in sales and marketing for nationally known category leaders in publishing, including Chronicle Books, Ten Speed Press, Cameron + Company, Dwell Studio, and Moleskine. She has sold to key national and international retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Nordstrom, and Target and became a sought-after expert in the industry. Now, with The Collective Book Studio, she has the opportunity to provide authors the support they need to get a book out into the world, from start to finish. During the quarantine Angela established a fund to create and distribute 10,000 PPE face shields nationwide, and has raised more than $35,000. Description: In this episode, we dig deep with Lola Wright about the agency we have as we ride the waves of our collective evolution to birth a new consciousness.
“The practice for me is the ability to watch, to witness, to notice.” - Lola WrightI once led a series at the Bodhi Center centered around the beautiful book Stillness Speaks, by Eckhart Tolle. Today, I'm bringing you a talk I gave inspired by chapter two, The Egoic Self. When I am seduced by the ego in stressful situations, I am flooded by negative thoughts. I've had to learn self-awareness and how to recognize what messages are coming from my ego. This week on Find Your Fierce & Loving, we're taking a step back and looking and how our ego minds affect our lives. So much on social media works to keep us in a reactive state that feeds our ego identity. Instead of giving in to it, let's develop our practice and learn how to love our ego.(01:48) - The ego mind(10:01) - Gaining awareness(17:52) - Relationship with your egoDo you want to unleash your inherent love and goodness, liberate yourself, and free humanity from the oppressive systems and structures we have created? This week on Find Your Fierce & Loving, Derrick shares his extraordinary story from the streets of Chicago to Senior Minister of Christ Universal Temple. “There's a desire that lives in you. There are an infinite number of ways that you can bring that desire to form, and it is your responsibility, it is my responsibility, to pay attention to how I uniquely want to bring that forward.” - Lola WrightWhen I was doing consultations for my book, I got a piece of advice that brushed against the ideas I had for this community. I had to tune into the intelligence of my own body and instincts to determine whether that expert opinion was really right for me and for my specific experiences. This week, I invite you to examine the input that you are getting from the people around you. “I try and use this space for good. And hopefully not just for me, but to inspire other folks to do something similar. This could be a restaurant, but it could be something else also. How do we use our spaces to help other people?” - Eric WilliamsEric Williams started his adult life by studying finance in the classroom and selling products on the streets of Chicago. Over many years he built his business into the Silver Room, which operates not only as a store but as a community—supporting the neighborhood, hosting artists, and putting on an annual block party attended by tens of thousands of people. This week on Find Your Fierce & Loving, Eric shares the lessons that helped him weather the extraordinary challenges brought by the last year. As a social entrepreneur, Williams successfully addresses the historic disenfranchisement in communities of color over the past 20 years by providing space, mentorship, and programming that responds to his core constituents' needs. In 2018, Downtown Hyde Park dedicated its inaugural Economic Impact Award to the Sound System Block Party, and in 2019 the event brought over 100 musical artists, 100+ small business owners, and more 50,000 celebrants to the neighborhood, generating an estimated $2.3 million dollars in economic impact for the Southside of Chicago in one day.In 2019, Eric Williams established The Silver Room Foundation. This foundation exists to further the reach, promotion, and education of artists and creative entrepreneurs, and to strengthen, leverage, and lend structure to the efforts of the social impact placemaking work catalyzed by Mr. Williams over the past 25 years. The Silver Room Foundation mission is to create intentional art-centered experiences, spaces, events, and programming to increase the health, wellness, equity, and economic prosperity outcomes for communities of color on Chicago's south and west sides. Williams holds a degree in finance from the University of Illinois at Chicago and was a 2017-2018 Loeb Fellow at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design.Do you want to unleash your inherent love and goodness, liberate yourself, and free humanity from the oppressive systems and structures we have created? “When you move something from your unconscious to your conscious, it's your responsibility to do something about it. Play in it, trudge through it, be uncomfortable in it, but try to come out with a more informed aspect of a belief that was false before.” - Dr. Janet TaylorDr. Janet Taylor is known as the “self-care doctor.” She knows the enormous benefits of modern medicine, but also sees the weaknesses of the modern medical model. When we have a model that doesn't account for a holistic view of a person's life and environment, we are missing so much of what they actually need to be well. Not only does the current model fail everyone through its narrowness, it fails Black people in particular with its entrenched racist ideas of Black bodies. The health of our communities demands a restructuring of how we think about care and health. This week on Find Your Fierce & Loving, listen to the incredible insights on health and self-care from Dr. Taylor. “You have a story: does the story serve you, and are you going to be seduced by it, or are you going to have it serve the scripting of something new?” - Lola WrightMy nine-year-old son recently shared a heart-breaking idea with me: that he wasn't supposed to be here. I gave him the chance to share why he felt that way, and in our conversation he soon came to his own conclusion: that he really was meant to be here. The distress my nine-year-old felt is the same kind of ordeal we are constantly grappling with. “If you stop numbing the pain that's there because you are not living in your deepest, fiercest loving way, the pain will escalate to where you have to do something different. And it won't just be a temporary fix, you'll have to do something meaningfully different.” - Jim DethmerJim Dethmer has been called to reduce suffering by targeting the institution that's more central to our lives than ever: work and business. As the founder of The Conscious Leadership Group, he finds the ways that teams are struggling and shows them not only how to better their experience at work, but improve their lives as human beings. By smuggling transformational principles into corporate worlds, he is cultivating true conscious leadership from the people who never knew that was something they even needed. This week on Find Your Fierce & Loving, let go of the belief that you must always be seeking more. Let yourself feel the pain of existence so that you may finally act, push fear aside, and become fully alive.(03:15) - Changing paths(11:31) - Fully alive(24:31) - Receptivity to these principles(30:55) - Cornerstones(34:50) - Commitments of conscious leadershipJim Dethmer is a coach, speaker, author, and founding partner at The Conscious Leadership Group. “What aspects of “me” have I deemed unloveable? And can I fall madly in love with the aspects of self that I believe are unloveable?” - Lola WrightThis week on Find Your Fierce & Loving, I'm bringing you a topic that we've been talking about in the Our Circle community: how to define a love that is truly alive. As articulated by Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hahn, there are four aspects of love: loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and freedom. Join me as we dive into how love must come alive in ourselves, with romantic partners, among intimate friends and family members, and then in the public square. I am asking us to go beyond a conceptual understanding of love and activate a lived practice.(00:40) - Bringing love alive(05:37) - Loving yourself(07:21) - Loving your romantic partner(12:36) - Love in intimate relationships(14:57) - Love in the public squareDo you want to unleash your inherent love and goodness, liberate yourself, and free humanity from the oppressive systems and structures we have created? "If you're loving you, then you're going to have a holy no. You're going to say no as easily as you say yes." - Angela MontanoAngela Montano has spent twenty years guiding people through trust and surrender. She sees the possibilities in life's challenges, and can help us re-align with the journeys that are right for us.In this episode of Find Your Fierce & Loving, I invite you to join in a vital discussion of prayer, power, and the different forms that these concepts can take. Angela shares why prayer does not exclusively belong to religion, the power of prayer to change your existence, and the importance of integrating “fierce” and “loving.”(1:41) - Back of this moment(4:50) - Advancing in truth(18:46) - What is fierce and loving?(28:25) - Rethink prayerAngela Montano prays a lot. She teaches ancient and new prayer technologies, encouraging people to cultivate a prayer practice which includes: praying for oneself, loved ones, situations, and really anything that calls one to ‘reach beyond,' which is Angela's most basic definition of prayer.Angela is host of the weekly live interactive talk show, Prayer On The Air. Especially against this backdrop of "we want to be equals, we want to be teammates, we want to be partners"—but also, we want to be in love.” - Kaley KlempKaley Klemp, an executive coach and expert in small-group dynamics and leadership development, and Nate Klemp, a prolific writer on the “inner technologies of the mind,” knew that traditional marriage models weren't going to fit their busy modern lives. “I'd love for you to ask yourself: how am I applying old logic to an entirely new set of circumstances?” – Lola WrightThere is a Jewish ritual called Yahrzeit, which is the day one year following the death of a loved one. It is a time to mourn and honor a loss through ceremony. As a people we are approaching a kind of collective Yahrzeit, a time to both recognize grief and honor everything that has come over the past year. While the future is still as uncertain as it ever has been, we cannot deny that the last year has changed us in unparalleled ways. Instead of clinging to our old understanding of the world, how can we use this anniversary to take inventory of what has changed and what no longer serves us? “We know how to heal ourselves. Even in the midst of trauma, and drama, and excitement, we know what to do if we just follow the instincts of our nurtured and nature self.” - Carlton PearsonThere are so many mistruths and half-truths in this world about what faith and love actually mean, and what the history of faith actually teaches us about those concepts. Bishop Carlton Pearson reaches beyond these obfuscations and sees us turning to recognize and fight for our shared humanity.Listen in to this episode of Find Your Fierce & Loving to hear a renowned heretic talk with Lola about what made him break with his Pentecostal dogma, the messy truths of that church, and the radical change that is happening all around us.(07:03) - Questioning dogma(15:24) - Accepting reality(22:42) - A post-Christian world(31:02) - A great awakeningCarlton Pearson was one of the most beloved Pentecostal Christian personalities of his generation. Thousands would fill arenas and churches to hear him sing, preach and inspire. Things changed quite dramatically when he stood in his mega church pulpit to proclaim a new doctrine, one that declared that because of Christ, no soul will spend eternity in hell. His controversial doctrine polarized faith communities literally all over the world. He lost his influence, his church, his friends, his finances in a very short period of time, one of the church's most beloved went from hero to zero, seemingly overnight, and became the most prominently titled heretic of his generation. After spending the last two decades rebuilding and rebooting his life and ministry, Carlton Pearson has emerged with a new purpose aimed to help others examine and reconsider what they believe, why they believe it, and how those beliefs add to or subtract from the quality of their lives. He is developing a multicultural and radically inclusive Metacostal online community reaching thousands that emphasizes expanded consciousness, radically inclusive love and self actualization. His books The Gospel of Inclusion and God Is Not a Christian, Nor a Jew, Muslim, Hindu... are available on Amazon and his CD Reflections After the Rain is available on iTunes. “There is so much investment made in your brokenness and your woundedness. There is so much investment made in the drama of the human condition. How will you disrupt that in 2021?” – Lola Wright2020 was a year of tipping points - from a global pandemic to toxic politics to an awakening around the hundreds of years of racial injustice in the United States. The unworkability that has existed in human consciousness is beginning to surface. This is good news. While awakening is upon us, human beings remain largely pushed by pain, and you may even find yourself attempting to make resolutions, goals, intentions, and commitments based on a kind of intolerant state. On this episode of Find Your Fierce & Loving, I'm asking you to step out of the loop of suffering. As one of my great mentors and friends, Michael Beckwith says, "pain pushes and vision pulls.”We need to get curious about a life pulled by vision rather than a life driven by adrenalized goals, commitments, and resolutions. Join me. Let's do this New Year a bit differently. “Recognize there is an order to this vast universe that transcends our ability to comprehend. There is something that goes far beyond the circumstances and conditions of our lives. There is something that transcends the devastation and despair of our human reality. I invite you to surrender into this unknown, unseen realm.” – Lola WrightThis year we have navigated great loss, great transition, and great trauma. In this mediation, I invite you to scan your memory and bring forward anything that's calling your attention, that lives in the realm of dreams, desires, and expectations for this past year. As we soften, we create more space, we become curious, available, and open to the infinite interpretations of our life experiences. In this episode of Find Your Fierce & Loving, we navigate this threshold into a new year with the support of this vast universe that is in you and all around you. I will guide you through a meditation that deeply honors loss, the unknown, and the unexpected. And now I invite you to find a comfortable, still space and to give yourself the gift of slowing down. May we be available to see all of the good that is around us in every given moment. “The world says there are good people and bad people. But we have to surrender the limitations of duality and begin to entertain that there is just one power, it's neutral and it goes where we direct it to flow.” - Mark Anthony LordWe grow up with the world screaming that there are two powers. Dualistic thinking of right and wrong, good and bad leads us to humanity's suffering loop. Mark Anthony Lord, author and minister, believes that as we fiercely accept ourselves, extend grace to those we meet, and practice forgiveness, we have the capacity to shift this trance. On this week's edition of Find Your Fierce & Loving, I invite you to share in an important conversation with my good friend, my mentor, my teacher, my practice partner in all things awakening. We discuss Mark Anthony's journey through his own broken ideas of God, himself, and the world and how it has led him to find increased peace and become the great spiritual leader he is today. We talk about how the suffering of 2020 is an invitation to give up playing small. Tune in!(04:53) - Reclaim yourself(08:09) - The world's idea of power(09:26) - Awakening today(13:37) - Surrender duality(18:11) - Grace is always available(23:01) - Provoke forgiveness(26:38) - Unravel the pain(30:29) - Completing the year(32:38) - A Course in MiraclesMark Anthony Lord is a minister, author, online course creator, and is passionate about helping people heal from religious trauma - creating a new, more loving and empowering relationship with God. Mark Anthony has come a long way from the broken ideas of God, himself, and the world. It wasn't an easy journey, as it isn't for any of us, but it has been deeply rewarding and fulfilling. The good that he has experienced far exceeds the pain he has had to move through. Mark did his time in 12 step rooms, including 30 days in a private treatment center in Canada, and he was truly changed by that awakening. He was led to the spiritual side of himself and his life. It gave him an insatiable drive to consume countless spiritual books, attend every workshop possible, and eventually stand on the stage at Agape International Spiritual Center in Los Angeles when he graduated with his Masters in Divinity and became a minister. It was a long way from where he started. Mark has done more than 10,000 hours on the spiritual field, teaching, speaking, preaching and practicing spiritual truths that are the cornerstones for living an authentic, faithful life. Mark knows how to help people find the pitfalls of perfectionism, transform them and break through the fears along the path to self mastery. This certainly does not mean that Mark does not fall down, act a fool or forget, but he has faced enough of the ego's bullshit to be able to smell it a mile away and has made a hundred percent decision that he is not buying that for himself or for any of us.You can connect with Mark Anthony Lord through his website, markanthonylord.me or on instagram @markanthonylord. “Dreams worth pursuing will scare you. This thing we call struggle, when understood as growth, is a great gift.” — Lola WrightWhat is pushing your buttons? We have an opportunity to learn to develop comfort with our discomfort. It involves familiarizing yourself with your inner growth edge. I'm talking about your inner state. What rattles you? What throws you off? One one of my early teachers, Denise Schubert, would say, “I may have pushed your buttons, but I did not install them.”On this episode of Find Your Fierce & Loving, I ask you to get close to your personal growth edge. Closer. Uncomfortably close. Ask it to expand your capacity for discomfort. Receive the gifts of your struggle as you become more in tune with yourself and the things you previously could not see - evolution, growth, and expansion. Tune in and let's push some buttons. Let's ask the necessary questions. Let's get uncomfortably close to your inner growth edge. “This is the great paradox - as you cultivate intimate relationship with your struggle, as you bring it forward into the light, into your awareness, it becomes a neutralizing experience. And you will find stillness on the other side of that.” - Lola WrightIt's such an important time of the calendar year to get honest about what is nudging you, weighing you down, and holding you back. It really is true that what we resist persists. When you fight against that which burdens you, what you're really doing is amplifying your discomfort. And so it's a great time of year to fall in love with the gifts of our struggle. 2020 has been a wildly disruptive, reorienting, and recalibrating year. But beauty and opportunity can still be found even when confronted with deep loneliness and loss. Move toward discomfort, don't run away! When we claim the gifts of our struggles, our breakdowns, our challenges, we completely transform the quality of them. Our theme for the month of December is the gifts of struggle, challenge, and breakdowns. “So often we move throughout our lives, throughout our days, focusing on the needs of others, focusing on satisfying others. But as you move towards finding your fierce and loving, and reconnecting with your purpose, you bring your awareness to an appreciation for all that you are and all that you have.” – Lola WrightPersonal transformation happens when we move our bodies and awaken our souls. To get clear on your purpose, meditation is an excellent resource you can use to access that place within you that is the keeper of your beliefs and memories.Oftentimes when we're wanting to expand or grow or evolve, we focus so much on where we're going that we miss the perfection and the exquisite nature of where we already are. In this episode of Find Your Fierce & Loving, I want to remind you that what you appreciate appreciates, and what you focus on expands. I will guide you through meditation to put a little attention back to where you are right now, to appreciate that you, and all the aliveness that is natively yours is worthy of attention and celebration. And now I invite you to find a comfortable, still space and to give yourself the gift of slowing down.
