Join Geneses Warren for an exclusive conversation on the rise and fall of Bishop Carlton Pearson, and the passing of mantles and impact of Bishop TD Jakes, Dr. Matthew Stevenson, and now Prophet Joshua Giles.
Today's Life Question of the Week comes from someone asking how to let go of the anger they feel towards a family member's financial abundance when they believe they don't deserve it. Next, Michael sits down with Matthew Fox. Matthew is an author, theologian, and activist priest who, for over 50 years, has ignited an international movement to awaken people to be mystics, prophets, and contemplative activists who honor the Earth and work for justice. He founded the University of Creation Spirituality to help establish a new pedagogy for learning spirituality grounded in an effort to reawaken the West to its own mystical traditions in such figures as Hildegard of Bingen, Meister Eckhart, the mysticism of Thomas Aquinas, and other contemporary scientists and mystics. During their insightful conversation, Michael and Matthew discuss: Matthew's early life as a monk in the Dominican Order, and his eventual embrace of spirituality and Liberation Theology which ultimately got him expelled by the Vatican The challenges of institutionalized religion, why younger generations are moving more towards spirituality, and what that means The importance of returning to mysticism and spirituality, and Matthew's work in discovering the teachings of Western mystics including: -Thomas Aquinas, a 13th-century theologian and Dominican monk who stood up the religious establishment of the day by embracing Aristotle and his paganist beliefs in nature, science, creation, non-dualism, and being present to love and the Universe -Julian of Norwich, the first woman to write a book in English in the 14th century. She wrote about the goodness of nature, that nature is God, and that we are all born in, and are here to share joy -Howard Thurman, an American author, philosopher, theologian, mystic, educator, and civil rights leader who grounded all of his work in the idea that life is alive with creative intelligence Cultivating joy, and how playfulness and fun are virtues – and much more! And as always, Michael concludes with a brief meditation that encapsulates the energy of their conversation. *Please note that this conversation includes a brief discussion on Bishop Carlton Pearson, a progressive spiritual teacher and author who, since the recording of this episode, has passed away. On November 19, Bishop Carlton Pearson, a legendary but polarizing figure in the Pentecostal church, passed away after a long illness. He was known for founding both Higher Dimension Church and the Azusa Fellowship. He was also known for later embracing a universalist theological view. In this episode, Tyler speaks from the perspective of someone who knew Bishop Pearson personally. He tells a few stories he's never shared publicly and reflects on what the church might be able to learn from his life and the reaction to his death. ] Buckle up for this one. On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Nov. 21 at 7:30 a.m. CT: Senior Hamas officials say an agreement could be reached soon in which the militant group would release hostages and Israel would free Palestinian prisoners. Israel, the United States and Qatar, which mediates with Hamas, have been negotiating for weeks over a hostage release that would be paired with a temporary cease-fire in Gaza and the entry of more humanitarian aid. DALLAS (AP) — Despite inflation and memories of past holiday travel meltdowns, millions of people are expected to hit airports and highways in record numbers over the Thanksgiving break. AAA forecasts that 55.4 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home between next Wednesday and the Sunday after Thanksgiving, with roads likely to be the most clogged on Wednesday. HONOLULU (AP) — A Hawaii official says all nine people aboard a U.S. Navy plane that overshot a runway have escaped injury. A U.S. Marine Corps spokesperson said Monday that the P-8A aircraft overshot the runway at a Marine base and went into Kaneohe Bay. Another spokesperson says the Coast Guard responded but that rescue operations were quickly called off. The P-8A is often used to hunt for submarines and used in reconnaissance and intelligence gathering. It is manufactured by Boeing and shares many parts with the 737 commercial jet. The base is about 10 miles from Honolulu on Oahu. WESTCLIFFE, Colo. (AP) — Authorities in Colorado are hunting for a man they believe shot and killed three people and critically wounded a fourth in a property dispute. The Custer County Sheriff's Office says what began as a dispute ended with gunshots Monday in a rural area about 8 miles from the county seat of Westcliffe. Authorities say two men and a woman died at the scene and a fourth person was taken to a trauma center in critical condition but is expected to survive. Residents of the wooded, rural area were told to shelter in place for five hours on Monday as authorities hunted for the suspect, but the order was listed Monday night while he remained at large. BEAVERCREEK, Ohio (AP) — Police in Ohio say a shooter opened fire at a Walmart, wounding four people before apparently killing himself. The attack took place Monday night at a Walmart in Beavercreek, in the Dayton metropolitan area. Police didn't immediately release the name of the shooter, a possible motive for the attack or other details. There also wasn't any immediate word on the conditions of the victims, who were taken to hospitals. In a statement, Walmart says the company is “heartbroken” over the shootings. KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has made an unannounced visit to Ukraine, traveling to Kyiv by train from Poland. Austin is making a high-profile push to keep money and weapons flowing to Ukraine even as U.S. and international resources are stretched by the new global risks raised by the Israel-Hamas conflict. In Kyiv he met Monday with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine's defense minister and chief of staff and announced that the U.S. would be sending an additional $100 million in weapons. Austin says Ukraine's effort to defeat Russia's forces “matters to the rest of the world” and U.S. support will continue “for the long haul.” The Eagles get Super Bowl revenge, the Nuggets and Bucks are among NBA's big winners, the Lightning get a key win over the Bruins in the NHL slate and two ranked college basketball matchups. WASHINGTON (AP) — A divided federal appeals court has found that private individuals and groups such as the NAACP do not have the ability to sue under a key section of the federal Voting Rights Act. It's a decision that voting rights advocates say could further erode protections under the landmark 1965 law. The 2-1 decision Monday by a panel of the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals based in St. Louis found that only the U.S. attorney general can enforce Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. That section prohibits discriminatory voting practices such as racially gerrymandered districts. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has spent part of his 81st birthday observing the White House tradition of pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys. Gobblers Liberty and Bell received executive clemency Monday at a White House ceremony. Biden mentioned his age and joked that he wasn't at the first of these events held 76 yeas ago. The 20-week-old, 42-pound birds were hatched and bred in Willmar, Minnesota, by the Jennie-O turkey company for the occasion. The turkey pardon ceremony marks the unofficial start of the holiday season in Washington. On Monday, Jill Biden also welcomed delivery of a Fraser fir from North Carolina as the official White House Christmas tree. The company that created ChatGPT is in turmoil after Microsoft hired its ousted CEO and many more employees threatened to follow him in a conflict that centered in part oin part on how to build artificial intelligence that's smarter than humans. The developments followed a weekend of drama that shocked the AI field and fueled speculation about the future of OpenAI. The startup's new CEO vowed to investigate the firing of co-founder and CEO Sam Altman. He's been instrumental in OpenAI's transformation from a nonprofit research laboratory into a world-renowned commercial startup that inaugurated the era of generative artificial intelligence. Microsoft announced that Altman and OpenAI's former president, Greg Brockman, would lead its new advanced AI research team. OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The founder of a former megachurch in Oklahoma known for rejecting the idea of hell and supporting gay rights has died. Bishop Carlton Pearson died Sunday in hospice care in Tulsa due to cancer according to his agent. Pearson was 70. Pearson founded Higher Dimensions Family Church in Tulsa and by 2000 its membership reached 6,000. Membership fell to a few hundred by 2008 after Pearson began teaching what he called “the gospel of inclusion,” a form of universalism, which does not recognize hell. The church, renamed New Dimensions was folded into another church as Pearson became a United Church of Christ minister. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is a senior producer for Lee Enterprises. Awakening: Rising Into Consciousness How is Awakening and Rising Into Consciousness part of Quantum Spirituality? Is there a connection? My esteemed guests today, Rev. John Scott, Bishop Carlton Pearson, and Pastor D. E. Paulk say “YES.” and are here to explain it all to you. Rev Jon Scott- is three generations fundamentalist preachers who from his earliest years has always had a love of music, singing in church and connecting with people. Jon is a consummate communicator and world changer who skillfully unveils a mystery through meditation, song or inspirational message. He makes a cosmic concept of the Universe accessible and easy to understand through his visionary teachings. A man who is helping to create a better world by showing people new ways to see it. Jon receives some of his inspiration from the teachings of leaders such as Dr. Wayne Dyer, Bishop Carlton Pearson and Baba Ram Dass. He considers himself to be a lifetime student and open to all inspiration. https://firstunity.org/member/rev-jon-scott-first-lady-kerri-bell-scott/ https://firstunity.org/event/awakening-conference-2023-rising-into-consciousness/ https://firstunity.org/ Bishop Carlton Pearson- author, The Gospel of Inclusion, and Get the Hell out of My Bible , he had documentary movies ( American Heretics on Netflix) made about him , was one of the most beloved Pentecostal Christian personalities of his generation. Thousands would fill arenas and churches to hear him sing, preach and inspire. But things dramatically changed when he stood in his mega church pulpit to proclaim a new doctrine, one that declared that because of Christ, no soul will spend eternity in hell. This controversial doctrine polarized faith communities all over the world. Bishop Pearson wasn't prepared for the rejection and stones aimed at him. He lost everything: his influence, his church, his friends and finances. In a short period of time, one of the church's most beloved went from hero to zero seemingly overnight and became the most prominently titled heretic of his generation. After spending the last two decades rebuilding and rebooting his life and ministry, Carlton Pearson has emerged with a new purpose aimed to help others examine and reconsider what they believe, why they believe it, and how those beliefs add to or subtract from the quality of their lives. Bishop Carlton Pearson shares his journey as he went from a nationally celebrated Pentecostal preacher who taught how to fear God to where he developed his "Gospel of Inclusion" where he declared that because of Christ, no soul will spend eternity in hell, which ultimately lost him his church. Carlton serves and has served on the boards of several charitable and humanitarian organizations, including the Interfaith Alliance, an organization which celebrates religious freedom by championing individual rights, promoting policies that protect both religion and democracy, and uniting diverse voices to challenge extremism; the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) of Washington DC, an organization promoting the civil rights of America's GLBTQ community; The Fellowship of Affirming Churches and Ministries (TFCAC); and is on the adjunct pastoral staff of All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He has authored a variety of books and booklets, two published by Simon and Schuster.
It was a true pleasure to sit down for this "kandid" and eye-opening chat with, Wellness Coach, Triathlete, Ordained Reverend & Amazon Best-selling Author of “Lord, I Don't Want to Die a Christian,” Ms. Chandrika D. Phea. Chandrika's journal turned ground-breaking book chronicled her path to freedom & an expanded & intimate relationship with God sans all the "tradition & trappings" of religion. Bishop Carlton Pearson wrote in the forward: "This book is kind of an underground railroad that's has come above ground and is publicly helping people find freedom! Chandrika-isms: " The womb is limited in space and expansion, so just as we all outgrew it, I've grown out of the religion I was born into. "...Christianity is now too small for the reflection and expression of God I've been called to." "There was so much I was doing, so much, I was being and so much I believed that wasn't in the Bible I was reading. So much of what I practiced for the sake of the air quotes, Christian faith, wasn't in this book Christian use as its authoritative guide." "...I learned that having a relationship with God doesn't mean to stop thinking for myself. God doesn't expect me to lose my imagination or trade my intellect in for faith." "I felt like loving God and loving people while being a Christian was impossible." "Could religion be the thief of the human story?" "What If...Jesus worked the drive-thru?" "The shedding of religion, or fig leaves, as I call it, had become quite regular. I started to think and perceive from an unlimited place of existence, thoughts-beyond restriction." "Moses, Abraham, Enoch, Adam and Eve... all of these people we're reading of, the Bible did not exist when they were living. They had experiences and they attributed those experiences to a higher state of being. And if it was their inheritance, then it's mine and yours! This episode of Tulsa Talks is brought to you by the Tulsa Regional Chamber.Today, Majeste Pearson is in the studio to talk about the many ups and downs of a career in music — even at the tender age of 22.Then, city editor Morgan Phillips discovers the next best thing to owning a time machine in a positively medieval edition of What the What?!So let’s talk, Tulsa. That’s musician Majeste Pearson, or Majeste Amour, as she’s known on social media. The singing sensation appeared on TV screens nationally last summer as a competitor on the Fox reality series “The Four: Battle for Stardom.” During Season two of the show, singers challenging each other for a recording deal and the right to be mentored by celebrity panelists Sean “Diddy” Combs, Meghan Trainor and DJ Khaled. And though she was eliminated before the finale, the powerhouse of a performer gained national attention. Here in Tulsa, though, we also know Majeste as the daughter of Bishop Carlton Pearson, the prominent evangelist turned divisive spiritual leader. Later, I talk with Majeste about what it’s like to have a Netflix film made about your family. But first, Majeste shares the unexpected lessons she learned during her stint on reality TV.Majeste Pearson grew up in the church, which was an early experience that forever connected her with music. Her father Carlton Pearson was the influential leader of the 5,000-member Higher Dimensions church, an evangelist whose spiritual mentor was Oral Roberts himself. But in 2006, Pearson has a theological transformation. He was deemed a heretic for his new belief in universal salvation and he lost his church. It’s dramatic stuff, but for Majeste’s family, that’s just life.Majeste’s next musical performance is actually this weekend — here she is, discussing Tulsa Sings!, during which she and three other finalists will sing with the Signature Symphony. It’s basically The Four: Tulsa Edition. When we come back, Majeste talks about what’s next. But now, Morgan Phillips takes up arms and swears her fealty for the Barony of Northkeep.More about the Society for Creative Anachronism and the Barony of Northkeep. After her experience in the national spotlight, Majeste Pearson has her musical goals set on new priorities and horizons. Let’s finish that conversation. You can follow Majeste on Instagram, @majesteamour, or by visiting majesteamour.com. Majeste will join the other Tulsa Sings! Finalists Samuel Briggs, Dennis Crookedacre and Molly Crookedacre in concerts on Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6, at the VanTrease PACE. Divine Cinema - Progressive Christian Movie Reviews & Analysis
Come Sunday is a film that finally tells the story of the journey into a type of Christianity that Divine Cinema and it’s hosts abide in. However, is it a good film? Does the filmmaking bring to life the struggle in challenging a tenant of Evangelical theology and all the loss that comes with that, or does it just make you wish hell actually exists? Listen to find out what Jeff, Dylan and Adam think. And of course to hear where they stand on its theological merits as measured by the tried and true pieces of silver rating system. Divine Cinema Review of Come Sunday (04:42) Ratings and Redeemed Perspectives (45:54) PLOT SUMMARY After a series of tragic events, Bishop Carlton Pearson begins to question his long standing belief in hell. Eventually he expresses this doubt in the most public way a pastor could, through a sermon. The sermon has a ripple effect, not just through his congregation, but in his family and American Christianity. The film follows Bishop Pearsons journey as he is labeled a heretic by many of his congregants, colleagues and even friends. If heaven and hell aren't about the afterlife, then what is salvation really about? Plus, Bishop Carlton Pearson from the Netflix biopic Come Sunday is our HOTW.
The new NetFlix Movie "Come Sunday" about Bishop Carlton Pearson's fall in the church due to his belief in there not being a Hell has re-kindled debate about who Jesus's sacrifice actually covers. Does Jesus sacrifice cover everybody (even atheist) or just people who believe Jesus is the lord and savior? Dr. Daniels answers the ultimate question while also giving some insight about who we might be on this Earth. This is an episode you do not want to miss.
I watched the biopic on Bishop Carlton Pearson, “Come Sunday,” over the weekend. Since then, I’ve had an opportunity to digest what I saw, juxtaposing it with what I already knew about the man and the situation, and the firestorm of comments about the man and the movie. Here’s my take. First of all, I do not know Bishop Pearson personally. I cannot speak to his character. I do not claim to know what is on his mind. I only know that he is a gifted preacher, teacher, and singer. I know that he was successful in his calling and served as a model for many up-and-coming preachers. So, I cannot vouch for his character or his personal interactions — neither of which are my business, anyhow. That said, there was something said by the actor who portrayed him: “I heard from God.” There was a time in my life, not too long ago, where hearing these words from someone I considered suspect would cause my spiritual radar to go berserk. I mean, in order to hear from God, you had to be holy. You had to be righteous. You had be well-versed in Scripture and a theological pedigree didn’t hurt. I thought you had to be a special brand of special in order to hear from God. You had to be a Pastor. Or a Prophet. Or an Apostle. Or a Bishop. When I first heard from God (yes I did), I considered myself to be among the evangelical elite. I was a champion among charismatics and a Pentecostal poster-boy. Like many who heard from God, I thought I had arrived! But, when I came down from my high-horse, I realized that hearing from God is something that every believer can expect AND that hearing from God is always an edifying, albeit challenging, experience. I also learned that it was deeply personal. I have five sons. I have a unique relationship with each of them. And they are all different. And while I may give a blanket statement to the whole crew (e.g., “clean your rooms”), I relate to them uniquely according to their individual personalities. So what I say to each of them is different. My personality remains consistent between them but the words I speak are unique to each one. Any good parent knows that there’s no cookie-cutter approach to raising kids. I firmly believe God is a better parent than any of us. If anyone says, “I heard from God,” I process that as the personal experience that it is. And, as long as it doesn’t violate the loving nature revealed in Jesus, I trust that the individual is genuine in his or her testimony. So when I heard the person portraying Bishop Pearson say those words, I trust that He did, indeed hear from God. The big question, then, is did he hear clearly? So many folks are quick to rush to judgment, saying that what Bishop Pearson was saying was inconsistent with the Word of God. Really? Whose interpretation? After all, there are over forty thousand Christian denominations. And within those denominations, there are factions that disagree. Who, then, holds the monopoly on truth? The reality, here, is that Bishop Pearson simply said something that was contrary to an accepted standard. The Body of Christ is a funny creature — it cannot seem to agree on anything except patently visible “sins” (e.g., homosexuality and abortion) and perceived “heresy” (e.g., Inclusionism and Universalism). Bishop Pearson’s chief transgression, then, was that he proffered a theological position that ran contrary to someone’s interpretation of truth. Let me stop here and say, emphatically, I am neither an inclusionst nor a universalist. For the record, I do not believe in the construct of hell as a place of eternal conscious torment. I also believe that there will be far more people in heaven than most in mainstream Christianity suppose. Personally, I have learned to love to the degree that I hope everyone gets to spend eternity in the joyous presence of our Heavenly Father. I believe that, through Jesus, God has made this a present possibility that becomes a reality by our choice.

Plus, Ira shares some of what he's learned or surprised him about Christianity in America, the strange understanding he felt between devout Christians and himself, accurate and honest portrayals of a minister's family, the art of storytelling, the central drama of the film, the difference in those who have spiritual practices and himself, and conversations with Christians who want to save him. The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 7, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Our September sermon series will be on “Thirst”. Everyone has a thirst or longing for something. We thirst for community, for meaning, for justice, for love. We can feel at times like we are in a lifeboat in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by water but with nothing to drink. Sometimes we can be surrounded by people but still be thirsty for community. Our lives can be full and successful and still feel devoid of meaning and purpose. We can also mistake our thirst for something superficial and therefore quench it with the wrong drink. We can desire peace, but try to quench it with numbness. We can yearn for love and mistake it as a desire for sex. On Sept. 7th we will launch the series and a new church year on what we are calling “Vision Sunday” with wonderful music, lunch and more for all ages. Then on Sept. 14 we will re-launch The Point our service that has been increasingly referred to as our “Good Without God” or “Humanist” service in Emerson Hall each Sunday 11:30-12:15 with outstanding music from Rick Fortner and friends. On Sept 21st Bishop Carlton Pearson will deliver our message in the 11:30 Contemporary service and on Sept 28th Rev. Barbara Prose and I will speak on our experience of the SNAP Challenge (living for a week on a “food-stamp” budget of $4.28 a day) in all three services. Kevin Ross is joined by Bishop Carlton Pearson, author of The Gospel of Inclusion, and God Is Not a Christian, Nor a Jew, Muslim, Hindu...: God Dwells With Us, in Us, Around Us, As Us. Bishop Pearson shares how our understanding of religious teachings that come from a place of judgment, lack, and limitation can be transformed with new understanding about the all-encompassing love of GOD. He tells us it's okay to ask tough questions about religion and God. You won't want to miss this eye-opening and transformational hour packed with "Ah-Ha" moments!!!
After a shift to what he calls “Expanded Consciousness” and the broader hope that all humanity would come to an ultimate end of good and God, rather than eternal damnation, Bishop Pearson's entire ministry was transfigured to one of radical Inclusion. This shift caused the reinventing, repositioning and rebranding of himself and his ministry. Listen in as Pearson shares his mandate to help enhance the possibilities of peace on the planet through his emphases on a more inclusive approach to spirituality, encouraging interfaith dialogue and fellowship.

Bishop Carlton Pearson is transforming the world with his courageous, uplifting message of Inclusion and Expanded Consciousness. Michael Beckwith. Bishop Pearson is the author of two spiritually liberating books: "God is Not a Christian, Nor a Jew, Muslim, Hindu...God Dwells With Us, In Us, Around Us, As Us" & The Gospel of Inclusion: Reaching Beyond Religious Fundamentalism to the True Love of God and Self". Once a popular evangelical minister and singer with a large conservative following, Bishop Pearson experienced a life-changing revelation regarding the non-existence of an eternal punitive hell. He fearlessly chose to preach about the true Unconditional Love of God to his conservative congregation. Labeled a heretic by his fundamentalist peers, he lost his entire evangelical mega-church. But he launched a powerful new ministry, spreading the Loving enlightenment of a Message firmly grounded in conscience, focused on the Unconditional Love that personally empowers each and every one of us. Join us in the first hour on The Frontier Beyond Fear to experience an enlightening live conversation with one of the most courageous, uplifting spiritual teachers of our time.
