Welcome to the 6IX & Friends Podcast. A podcast that looks at everyday life things from the lens of black millennials. I keep every episode fresh by bringing in a different person, with a different perspective, to talk about different topics. Hope you enjoy. Follow me on all social media @CJThe6IX
When I was growing up the way men thought about sex was fundamentally flawed. Sex for us, was a goal, a prize of sorts. We didn't consider the human that was behind the body of the woman we wanted to have sex with. We just wanted to up our body count. But for what? To feel more of “man”? To prove you were “attractive”? These thoughts aren't unique to me and my upbringing. They're similar thoughts a lot of men the 90s had. Today I challenge you and everyone else around you to rethink the reasons you have sex and make sure it's simply because it's something you enjoy and not something you need to prove. What passions do you have? When do you think is the best time to follow them? For most people the pandemic was a great opportunity to follow whatever passion that had their mind on. But, not everyone was so fortunate. Some people don't even know what their passions are. I wanted to talk with Trey today about his passions, how the pandemic affected him, and how he found his passion. Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)
Who do you consider your friend? When did you become friends? What do you know about your friends? It’s kind of crazy how men can build such long lasting friendships so easily, but no one really ever talks about how they happen. How long does it take for a strong friendship to form? How elastic are friendships? What does your love language have to do with friends? All these questions and more are answered on today’s episode. Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)
How many people do you know have a job they love and want to spend the rest of their life doing? For people in corporate America those people are few and far between. I was one of those people they was working simply because it paid a very sustainable salary. However, going to work everyday just for the money took it's toll on my mental health. This was because I actually hated my job; the bureaucracy, the red tape, the elbow rubbing. It started feeling like I was surrounded by a bunch of people who only wanted to fuck each other over for a promotion so they could justify buying more shiny things, the rat race as some would call it. I was sick of it, so I quit. Here's the story. Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)
What is your definition of a "Man"? When someone says they're being a "Man" what does that make you think about? Is this idea of being a man toxic behavior? Is there toxic behavior associated with being a man? Sir Eddie Washington and myself wanted to talk about these things and dispel all the myths of being a man and the toxic traits that come with the old version of being a man. What do you think being a man is? Do you agree with us? Were we wrong anywhere? Let's discuss. Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)
Fear is a primal instinct. It serves as a protection mechanism. But what happens when you have fear and there’s no physical danger to be afraid of? Then fear can hinder you from bettering yourself. Sometimes it’s the fear of failure and even sometimes it’s the fear of success. What if you’re just afraid of your potential? Evan and myself had a conversation centered around fear and how it prevents us from doing the things we know that’ll make us great. Do you have any fears? How do you plan on overcoming them? Maybe you’ll learn some tips and tricks on today’s episodeSupport the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)
You workout for your physical health and meditate or pray for spiritual health. But what do you do for you mental health? Mental health is such an unseen factor for many people. Your mental health can affect all facets of your life. Luckily, there’s been more light shed on the topic and mental health and what it means to take care of it. Today’s guest is Leo Flowers, he’s the host of the “Before You Kill Yourself” Podcast. He’s struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts and is here today to talk about how important taking care of your mental is and some ways that will help you through it. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/before-you-kill-yourself/id1446501856thrivewithleo.com If you like the episode, go ahead and join the facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3571885766265106Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)
Voting is one of the most important things you can do as an American. However, it seems that most Black people vote for the Democratic party unequivocally. By why is that? Is it a function of the Democratic party being the best choice or maybe the Republican party being the worst. Although, historically speaking the Republican party had the first Black Congressmen. What changed? Does it even matter what party we (Black people) vote for anymore. I talked with Ben Baker, a social political activist and wanted to see if I could get some answers for these questions. https://youtu.be/v2LlvHvsnScSupport the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)
On this season of the podcast I want to be a little more introspective and ask the why questions. And since we're coming back on the weekend after Valentine's Day, what better topic than dating? Why is dating hard? Is it because we have too many choices? Is it because we won't settle for anything less than perfect? I decided to call up on my friends Sam and Morgan (Mo Peace if you will) to see if we could find some answers to the questions. What do you think is the reason? https://youtu.be/AbMmywiYToU Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)
Last episode of the season. Let's be introspective. We've all heard the term generational curses. But what does that mean and why do they hold us back so much? Why do we stick to these old habits and old ways of thinking that are obtrusive to greatness? Sometimes it's just what we're taught and we don't take the time to explore other ideas and methods. Let's be the generation that breaks the generational curses. Let's find them and destroy them so that we as individual people can become better and do better for ourselves. What better way to end the year than with the biggest turnout in a Presidential election is America's history? Now I'm sure you're thinking that all Black people that voted should've voted for Biden/Harris, and if they voted for Trump/Pence they must hate Black people? Well I found someone who did vote for Donald Trump in both 2016 and 2020, but she's very Pro Black. To be honest with you, voting for Donald Trump and being Pro-Black just don't agree in my mind. So I had to do what I do best, sit down and have a conversation with her about her vote and her beliefs. And between me and you I understand where she's coming from, but I'm still not voting for Trump. Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)
2020 has been the year of the investor. A lot of people have taken their newfound free time to learn how to invest in different vehicles. The most popular vehicle? The stock market. However, if you’re not careful and not smart with your money, you can lose it all in the stock market. So that begs the questions, how do I make smart decisions with the stock market? Well lucky for you I got Mac on a phone call to talk about the stock market and how to invest in stocks. It’s a crash course into investing and it might contain a couple tips for the seasoned investors. Just for reference you can get started investing in the stock with as little as $200, even less depending on the stock you want to invest in, but we’ll get into all that in the episode.Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)
There’s two big reason someone would buy a house; to live in it or rent it out. Luckily, this episodes explores both sides of it (mostly the financial aspects of it). What do you need to buy your own personal house? How much money do you need to put down? Most people assume 3.5% with an FHA loan but there’s a couple options out there for you depending on what you want to do. And on the investment side, how much do I need to start? How do I invest in real estate but also protect my personal finances? I’ve brought a mortgage broker, Mr. Conrado, to talk about all these thing with me. I hope everyone takes away something new from this episode and starts their own journey to home ownership. Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)
I just want to be successful. A phrase that we're all familiar with. Maybe you've heard it recently, or better yet said it recently. But what does successful really mean? Am I successful because I have a job? Or maybe because I've paid off all my student debt? Or maybe it could be something as simple as me being able to live independently by myself? One thing we can all agree on is that success is subjective and depends on the person. But what similarities does everyone's success share? What pitfalls do most people hit on their way to success? What can we do to help each other? Coach Cam has joined me today to explore all these questions and even more. Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)
Dr. Higgs is currently an engineering professor at Rice University. He is one of the few Black engineering professors I've met in my life, none of which were at my Alma Matter, Auburn University. Since I didn't have any Black professors there was a question that always persisted in the back of my mind "How would things change if my professor could relate to me?" It's been proven countless times that when students see someone that looks like them in positions of power it motivates them to strive for greater success. Also, having those figures can be provide the safe spaces that are sighs of relief. I wondered how Dr. Higgs felt about that sentiment and thus got him on the podcast and asked the question. After all of it, his biggest piece of advice? Everyone should get a doctorate. If you want to know why you should tune in. Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)
Empowerment (n) - authority or power given to someone to do something. But who willing gives women the power? A lot times women have to empower themselves to get what they want. But the question is how? How do women empower themselves, and what does that really mean. I sat down with Tafiea to talk about some of the ways she empowers herself and what the means. We also talked about feminism. And how men can be feminists too. Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)
They say the path to becoming a millionaire is have at least 7 streams of income. And many people today would tell you that ForEx is a great way to make money in your sleep. However, many more people are skeptical of the idea. How can people make that much money? Is it a scam? Is it an MLM? as Kayy says "Scared money don't make money." So I figured I'd sit down with her and discuss what ForEx is and if it's worth the time and investment. Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)
"Never forget where you came from." It's the number one phrase given to people when they "make it out." But honestly what does that even mean? Not forgetting where you come from is taking care of the community that raised you. For some people it's monetarily, however for Keyshawn (Shawn) it's community outreach. Shawn does the most in his power to take care of his home community of Newark, NJ. He even created a scholarship to help high school seniors pay for college. His story is inspiring to hear, and makes me want to go do more for both my home community and the community I live in. Hopefully, hearing it will make you want to do the same. I first met Cody Robinson during my undergrad years at Auburn University. At the time he was a cop. A really cool one at that. We both practiced parkour together. Cody was a cop in Alabama for 5 years. I sat down with him to have a conversation on policing in America and how it affects Black lives. It’s interesting to see where our thoughts and ideals converge and diverge. In this episode we covered cop training, psychology, and what could be done on both sides to help with the over policing of Black bodies. The conversation was civil but not always in agreeance. It gets really heavy so strap in for the ride. I sat with Amelia to have a conversation with her about the life of a transgender woman. There's more to it than meets the eye, and there's a lot of scrutiny involved. **Trigger Warning: This episode is about Domestic Violence and Domestic Abuse Survivors**Domestic abuse isn't always what you think it is. There's many different types from physical to emotional to psychological and even sexual. The abuser could be anyone as could the survivor. For most of use we want to know how to help the survivor make it through their situation but it's not always as easy as just removing them from the situation. Sometimes there are kids involved and that makes leaving immensely harder. Generally the best thing you can do is offer a listening ear. Here's Cynthia's story of survival and how you can help. Do you think you're black enough? Actually, what does it even mean to be black enough? What things must you do to be considered black? There's a large spectrum of Black people and how the interact with the world. However, one of the worst things you can say to a Black person is that they're "Acting white." Acting white, takes away from allowing Black people to exist on a spectrum and places them in a confined box to fit the very specific "Black" definition. I got my LB Mr. Courtney Bass to tell me about how he is simultaneous not black enough, but also isn't white (duh). Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)
Most people have pets. And, to keep your pets healthy and alive they need to visit a veterinarian. However, a lot of people don't know that much about their pets and what all happens when they're at the vet. My LB Dr. Del Anderson popped up today to give tips and and inside look at what it's like being a vet. Especially when him being the only black vet on the West coast of Florida. Being a vet is a tricky field for some because you have to balance so many specialties with so many different types of animals. Although, Del only does dogs and cats (sorry bird people you'll have to go somewhere else). Del is also really open about the surgeries he performs and even has a page for them, @dranderson.vet. Your motivation is similar to the gas in car, sometimes it's full and sometimes you're riding on fumes. How do you go about refilling your motivation? What can you do when your riding on fumes and can't find a gas station to stop at and refill the tank? That answer mostly lies in your inspirations. Your inspirations can carry you to that next motivation pit stop. Sometimes it's deeper than that. Let's talk about what factors into motivating you as a person and what can inspire you to do all the things you set out to do. Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)
We (read Black people) all hail from the motherland of Africa. However, some of us just recently migrated to this land we call America. And even some are first born Americans of their households. Olumuyiwa Aladebumoye (top 5 favorite names to say) is one of those people. His family hails from Nigeria. I wanted to ask him what are some of the main differences between growing up in America with the cultural influences of Africa very present in your home. The differences in how the two cultures think have some similarities and very stark differences. You're in a for a treat. Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)
Nurses have a hard job, and we're not even counting what COVID19 is putting them through. They have to deal with unruly patients and people who think they know better than the doctor (I really hope you're not one of those people). I asked Muriel to shed some light on her Nursing journey and what led her to take up the profession. What happens when the one you married grows into their true self? Are you supposed to adapt? Are you supposed to stop them from changing? Love, growth, and marriage all coincide but are very fickle things together. Sometimes you must ask yourself are you in love with the person or the idea of them? All that to ask what leads beautiful marriage into a nightmarish divorce? Love does make you blind, and you can ignore those red flags that tell you to run away. Maybe it’ll get better, maybe it won’t always be this bad. I want to explore this divorce from a 24-year old’s perspective. You’re never too wrong to experience anything right? Understanding yourself comes with understanding your family and how you grew up. Some people don't realize just how much of the childhood has effected them as adults and how some of the demons in their closet have contributed to the toxic behaviors the exhibit to this day. It's always a good idea to stop and reflect. Look at yourself and find out where these negative behaviors come from and how to combat them. Passion a dear friend of mine is finally liberated since she decided to sit back and think about herself and how her family has effected her (both positive and negative) and now she wants to share what she learned on this journey with you. Mr. Bacon (@sapbodean and yes that is his real name) and I sat down to talk about our shared experiences as people growing up in the country. If you add up our graduating classes, you get a collective size of about 200 students (guess who had less in their class). But the most interesting thing about the entire conversation is how Bacon has used a lot of what he learned growing up in the country and applied it to corporate america. Those skills have actually helped in thrive in the environment, because both areas are built heavily off respect for one another. #country #barn #horses #texas #alabama #land #gradschool #corporateamericaSupport the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)

Most experts will tell you to be financially independent, you must have at least seven sources of income. I wholeheartedly believe at least one of those sources should be your own business. Your job has a glass ceiling on income, and you get taxed out the wazoo. Investments can average around 7% APR, and because of that they’re most helpful once you have amassed some wealth. However, business on the other hand have near infinite room for growth and some can be started with as little as $0 (some need $20K to get started but you get the idea). @alabithegreat is here to tell you what you need to start your own business and why it’s so important. #financialfreedom #business #minoritymindset #taxes #businessowner #entrepreneurlife #entrepreneurs #millionairemindset #onlinebusiness #beyourownboss #cjthe6ix #withthe6ix #6ixandfriends #podcast #millennials #black #blackboyjoy #blackgirlmagic #6ixstudiosSupport the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)

Would you rather spend a little more money to eat healthy or spend thousands on a doctor’s visit? I think the answer to that question is pretty obvious, but most people would rather take that convenience of fast food, over the prep time it takes to make your own healthy meals. And who can blame them, millennials have enough on there plate as it is (pun intended). However, @chef.jrob is here today to explain the importance of healthy eating and thinks you can do to make healthy eating easier for your lifestyle. Did I forgot to mention he’s sponsored by Kroger? Not really but that’s the dream. You ever wondered what it was like for your teachers that were teaching your growing up? Or maybe what it’s like these days for the kids going through high school and maybe how their experience differs from yours? Well today all your questions will be answered (maybe). I have my good friend and educator (or teacher if you preferer) on the mic and she’s talking about all the things she’s seen and goes through as an educator for high school students. Spoiler alert: They’re still bad ass hell. Also, teachers don’t get the respect or pay they deserve. #teacher #highschool #educator #education #college #entrepreneur #cjthe6ix #withthe6ix #6ixandfriends #podcast #millennials #black #blackboyjoy #blackgirlmagic #wealwayswiththe6ixSupport the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)
And let the church say Amen! One of the cornerstones of the black family is the black church. I brought a Mr. Kirk onto the podcast today to talk about Christianity and how it influences his life. We argue the difference between fact and faith, spirituality and religion, whether hell really exists and even going to church with a hangover. Nothing is off limits in this discussion. I hope you don’t get upset with me. #religion #spirituality #Christian #Christianity #faith #hell #debate #gravity #heaven #cjthe6ix #withthe6ix #6ixandfriends #podcast #millennials #black #blackboyjoy #blackgirlmagicSupport the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)
Mental health is a very trick subject in the black home. You can say that a lot of black parents don’t feel like mental health issues exist in the children or other family members. Some think that people are outright just making it up. However, in many situations that is not the case. I have my homie Cameron Johnson (@illumidaji) on today to talk about his struggles with depression and some mental health myths and facts. #mentalhealth #mental #health #phibetasigma #depression #schizophrenia #therapy #therapist #therapeutic #cjthe6ix #withthe6ix #6ixandfriends #podcast #millennials #black #blackboyjoy #blackgirlmagicSupport the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)
