Our readings today all lead to the final verse, 2 Corinthians 5:21 "For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." We might become the righteousness of God?! That is such an amazing statement it is easy to gloss over. Let's not gloss over. Today we see several examples of the importance of human agency and human action in the fulfillment of God's plans. God is calling us – at all times – to act in doing the work of the Lord. So much of today's readings relate to where America finds itself now. From Gideon telling his people to follow the Lord, not a man, to Isaiah's powerful prophesies that at the very least we in America and around the world can relate to in the face of the rise of global communism, to Paul's final instructions to be watchful and act like men, we can find encouragement and God's leadership in these readings. Today's episode feels like a miracle to me. If you have doubts, if you wrestle with faith, this episode should be a great encouragement. God gives us the example of Jacob and Rachel, sinners that they are, and Gideon, who openly expresses his weaknesses, fears, and doubts. And He demonstrates His tender patience with us by giving Gideon so much evidence that there is no longer room for doubt. In Job, we're given a great example of humble willingness to be judged and in Isaiah we're given a clear command to trust only in the Lord. And Paul ties up our whole lesson in such a wonderful bow in 1 Corinthians 15. It's like Paul was expositing the rest of our readings for us. Can God actually use me? We see Gideon ask God this question. Why would God choose Gideon, the weakest of his family, which is the weakest of Menassah, which is a half-tribe, the weakest of Israel? In Job we see perhaps some of the answer to this question. God gives us a deeply satisfying buffet today with many different flavors to taste from. From Jesus confronting the Pharisees in Mark 2 to Jacob's envious and bickering wives and deceitful father in law in Genesis 30 to the opening act of the story of Gideon in Judges 6 to the abject suffering and loneliness of Job in Job 30 we are given a huge spectrum of life circumstances we can all relate to. And then we end with 1 Corinthians 14, advice to the local church on how to organize and run our local church services. Is it through the local church that God wants to work in our lives? All of our passages point to one crucial gift we all lack to varying degrees: Wisdom. What is Wisdom, where does it come from, and how can we get more of it? Job spells it out very clearly for us.  God is so incredibly good, and He offers us access to the wisdom He used to create all of existence. After reading about Jesus crucifixion and death, we see how Jacob puts on the clothing and appearance of Esau to receive his father's blessing. How similar is this to us putting on Jesus' righteousness! We read about Job holding fast to his righteousness and we wonder if that isn't God's righteousness he is holding fast to, not his own. Can we, like Job, rest completely assured in the righteousness God offers us? This question and many more are considered in this wonderful episode. The Bible is God's Word. When Jesus told Peter in Matthew 26 that he would deny Jesus three times, Peter was in complete denial. In Judges 2 we see the outcome of Israel's promise in Joshua 24 to worship only the Lord. Today Jesus weaves a strong warning of woe against the pharisees. Are we like the pharisees? He tells them that they clean the outside of their cups – the part people see – but the inside is filthy. How does the inside of our heart, our secret inner parts, look to God? We then turn to Genesis, where Abraham is called a prince of God. Can God make us princes and princesses also? Then Joshua gives us a warning that is very applicable to us in our times today. Job cries out to find and voice his complaint to God Himself, knowing full well that it would be completely terrifying to do so. Isaiah gives a strong warning and prophesy on Tyre and Sidon because of their arrogant pride. What does this have to do with us today? Today we see some great examples of God's goodness, how tender and merciful He is to us even as He fulfills His promises to deliver perfect justice, thereby judging our sins. God's character is made plain and clear, even in the seemingly small and insignificant things He does, like providing Joshua and the whole world through the people of Israel the means to distinguish between first degree murder and accidental manslaughter, and to prevent the vicious cycle of vengeance in tribalistic cultures.  Throughout today's passages we get some great details about the exquisite goodness of God's character. We open in Matthew 19 with the famous quote, "It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven." What does this mean? We then see in Genesis 19 an incredibly horrific series of sexual sins and meditate on why God even put this in the Bible. In Joshua we're given a beautiful example of God's design for earthly government and justice. In Job we see an incredible prophesy of a living redeemer. In Isaiah we see a prophesy of Egypt, Assyria, and Israel worshipping the LORD together. And then we're given both milk and solid food in 1 Corithians 3. Today I'm just blown away at the common theme in our passages of God's promise of the 2nd coming of Christ and the perfect justice He will bring. Especially today, when we see injustice all around us, we can rest in the promise that there will be perfect justice at the end of this part of our story. We also get repeated warnings of the grief we cause ourselves by compromising on God's commandments and warnings to reject false teachings. From Herod to Joshua to Job we see the consistent call today to convict us of fearing our fellow men more than we fear God. If God is for us, who can be against us, and yet Job shows us clearly that our natural fleshly state is to forget that Truth. We marvel at history being foretold in great detail by Isaiah and God's promises being fulfilled from Abram to Joshua. Today we read p1 of the greatest speech in human history, the Sermon on the Mount. Then as we wrestle with Jesus' command to be perfect as God is perfect, we learn about God preparing to cleanse sin from the world through the flood in Genesis 5 and God forgiving Israel and letting their sins in the wilderness be rolled over through the blood of their circumcision in Joshua 5. In Job 5 we hear Eliphaz insist that Job's suffering is due to his sin and he should rejoice because if he just 'fesses up God will give him everything he wants. In Isaiah 5 we learn more about the sins in the world that grieve God to the point of threatening complete destruction.
