Luke 8 | Today Jesus continues to teach through parables. These are teaching stories that convey a wider understanding of the Kingdom of God. Today, Jesus goes on to use several different images, but does Jesus change subjects?
“Come, follow me,” Jesus said. . . . — Matthew 4:19 In the children's game “Follow the Leader,” one person takes up the role of the leader. The rest of the group lines up behind that person, mimicking their actions. It's natural for us to follow someone, and we all have role models we admire. These are people we want to pattern our lives after. But we need to ask, “Whom are we following? Whose footsteps are we walking in?” In the Jewish culture of Jesus' day, a rabbi (religious teacher) would invite students to join and work with him for a period of time—often years. The invitation would be a call to walk in their way, mirror their actions, and become their disciples. Luke 6:40 describes this process: “The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.” This involved learning by experience and being shaped to a new way of life. Jesus extended that kind of invitation to Andrew, Peter, and others, saying, “Come and follow me. Walk closely with me, learn from me, and become my apprentices.” Today Jesus extends that same call to each of us: “Walk in my way, learn from my teachings, and become my disciples. Do life with me so that, over time, you may resemble me.” Lord Jesus, what an amazing privilege it is to be invited to follow you and learn from you. Guide us, as your disciples, to follow you faithfully each day and bring the good news of your kingdom to people everywhere. Amen.

Today Jesus proclaims he is the good shepherd. The shepherd cares for us in ways both subtle and profound. After the resurrection Jesus finds everyone who has lost hope, faith and belief. Today Jesus does the same. We can quit prayer, church and even God but God will never quit us. God will chase you down.
Did Christianity Today question whether Jesus was nailed to the cross? In this episode of Didaché, Justin Peters addresses a shocking article published under the editorial leadership of Russell Moore that implies Jesus may have only been tied to the cross. Citing Dr. Jeffrey Garcia of Gordon College, the article suggests a reinterpretation of the crucifixion that contradicts both the biblical text and centuries of Christian understanding.Justin responds with clear scriptural evidence from John 20, Psalm 22, Isaiah 53, and Colossians 2 to affirm what the Bible plainly teaches: Jesus was nailed to the cross. He also exposes the deeper concern—how articles like this erode trust in the authority and inerrancy of Scripture. With clarity and biblical conviction, Justin calls believers to stay grounded in God's Word and avoid publications that compromise it.Listen to this important response, and be reminded why Scripture—not cultural revisionism—must shape our doctrine.WWUTT YouTube Channel (Recommended - please subscribe)Full Christianity Today article (CT recommended? Today Jesus gives us the very humorous image of a man in need of assistance with a sliver with his eye, and the person who wants to help him has a beam in his own eye! For those of us who are inclined to help others with their issues, Jesus commands, "Remove the beam from your own eye first." What is the beam in my eye? That would make a great focal point for us for our efforts this Lent! In order for us to lead others in faith, which Jesus is asking of us, we first must be healed of our own blindness and be rid of that beam!

Many people misunderstand Christianity, viewing it like every other religion. They wrongly assume it's all about what you can and must do for God. Today Jesus makes it clear He did not come to be served. God is not looking for what you can do for Him. Rather, Jesus came to serve you with His life, death, and resurrection. We call this the gospel, that at the heart and core of the Christian faith and doctrine is the heart and core of Jesus Christ, who laid down His life to serve as your ransom for sin, death, and hell. Jesus returned to His hometown of Nazareth and had been rejected. He didn't throw in the towel and quit, but “He went down to Capernaum”. He went down to a dark place where demons, evil, and wickedness abound. And it appears from all the Gospels, that as a result, great numbers of people were afflicted with various sicknesses, blindness, and diseases. Jesus shows up as a great Light in the midst of that kingdom of darkness, bringing peace, bringing hope, bringing grace, and bringing salvation to hungry, hurting, broken, sick people. This is where Jesus feeds the five thousand, gives sight to the blind, raises the dead, cast out demons, and heals the sick. It appears that Jesus did more miracles in this region than He did in the area surrounding Jerusalem. Yesterday we discussed Luke describing how Jesus had authority over the demons as He cast the demon out of a man in the synagogue at Capernaum. Luke tells us that the people who saw this responded in awe of what they saw in verses 36-37, “Then they were all amazed and spoke among themselves, saying, "What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out." And the report about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region.” Can you imagine what the people that just tried to kill Jesus back in Nazareth were thinking when they hear about all these things! Today here in verses 38-44, we want to talk about how Jesus not only has authority over the demons but how He also has authority over diseases. I've been to Capernaum many times and we always go to the old ruins of an ancient synagogue from the time of Jesus that is right next to the excavated foundation of a house they believe was Peter's house. A church is built over them with a glass floor so you can see them. And this is all within a few hundred feet of the northern tip of the Sea of Galilee. After casting out the demon in the synagogue, Jesus stands up and walks over to Simon Peter's house where He is told that Simon Peter's mother-in-law is sick with a high fever. What Jesus did was extraordinary. He did not treat the fever as though it were a medical ailment needing treatment. He spoke to it and rebuked it! And it left her (4:38-39). Did Jesus speak to the virus or to the bacteria? Had Satan caused this fever as he caused poor Job's boils (Job 2:1-7)? We do not know. We do know that the cure was instantaneous. Mark's Gospel informs us that the woman stood to her feet and hurried off to the kitchen to minister to the family with a meal. By the way, Jesus doesn't heal us to write a book, or go on a speaking tour, but He heals us to serve and minister to those around us. When I think about this incident, I am reminded that Jesus not only cares about the multitudes but that He notices and takes time for the individual. This also assures me that Jesus cares about the physical ailments of people. Today Jesus still has the power and authority of sickness and disease and He can heal anyone if it is His will. Over the many years of our ministry, I have anointed with oil and prayed with many sick people in their homes and in the hospital and at church. Many were healed and immediately knew it. But also, in many cases the Lord's healing was an ultimate healing in taking them home to be with Him in heaven. Sometimes God doesn't answer the prayer to remove the sickness as with the Apostle Paul, but He always promises that His grace will be sufficient as we go through the suffering (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). And what really matters is to be confident that God loves you and that He cares about every type of physical, emotion, mental or spiritual suffering or sorrow you might be dealing with. Trust His love and grace today even if you can't feel His hand. God bless!
In this episode of Next Step Leadership Podcast, Tracy Reynolds and Chris Maxwell continue their conversation with Pastor Lee Mason. In 2007, Lee and his wife Lisa began Classic City Church, a non-denominational church serving the city of Athens, GA. Lee talks about his book, Ten Historical Facts About Jesus: What Historians Are Certain of Concerning History's Most Compelling Figure. His ten points are valuable for today's leaders to know: Jesus was a real historic figure.Jesus was known as a miracle worker in a manner unique to anyone else.Jesus was crucified in Jerusalem. Jesus was buried in the tomb of Joseph in Arimathea. Jesus' tomb was found empty by a group of women.Numerous people claimed to have seen Jesus alive after His death. Jewish monotheists began to worship Jesus as God.A resounding Messianic movement emerged after Jesus' death.Gentiles renounced their pagan ancestry to worship Jesus.Today Jesus is the most significant figure in history.Learn from these lessons. Understand the importance of Christ's death and resurrection, and why we believe what we claim to believe. The historical figure of Jesus can lead through us as we make the next steps as His followers.https://www.classiccity.org/staff

So far in Matthew's narrative, Jesus has demonstrated that he is Lord over disease, death, demons, and even Lord over Creation and the created order. He also demonstrated that he is Lord over men, offering forgiveness of sins to the repentant. Today Jesus demonstrates that he is Lord of the Sabbath, refusing to compromise his heavenly standard in order to submit to the scribes. Moreover, he freely calls men to serve to him, sits with those who would have been considered unclean without becoming unclean himself, and continues to heal those who are ailing. No like this has ever been seen in Israel before Jesus, setting him apart as more than just a prophet and more than just a priest. :::Christian Standard Bible translation. All music written and produced by John Burgess Ross.Co-produced by the Christian Standard Biblefacebook.com/commuterbibleinstagram.com/commuter_bibletwitter.com/CommuterPodpatreon.com/commuterbibleadmin@commuterbible.org
Simon Peter . . . dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. — John 21:11 Years ago we lived on the edge of a lake in eastern Ontario. We often took our fishing poles out to see what might be swimming in the water. Some seasons were better than others, and we released many sunfish so that they could grow bigger. Some bass ended up in the frying pan, but we certainly were not experts. The fishermen in today's story were experts. They didn't know who was calling out to them from the shore, but they knew what it was like to try fishing on the other side of the boat. Yet on this day they were not sure what to expect; they had been fishing all night and had caught nothing. These men had also had a rough time lately. They had been following Jesus, the Messiah, but they were confused with the outcome. Jesus had died and risen again, but Rome was still in control. What was the Messiah up to? Then, after throwing their nets on the other side and getting so many fish that they couldn't haul the net in, something triggered in their minds: “It is the Lord!” (See Luke 5:1-11.) Eventually they dragged their overflowing net ashore, and it was not even torn. A reminder that God can do more than we can ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20). Today Jesus wants to remind us that he has called us to follow him too. What is Jesus up to in your life? In your neighborhood? Your community? Your area? Is he calling you to trust him again like you did when you first met him? Lord, thank you for your abundant love as you keep calling us to love you and others. Amen.
Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise
It has been an exciting time here at the Son Games 2024 VBS program. We have had a great group of kids, a wonderful staff, and we not only partnered with St. Paul's Lutheran Church, but had people from other churches, too. This is what church is about. You heard our mottos, Join In, Team Up, Get Strong, Keep On, and Celebrate. This is all in the back drop of the Olympics. When we think of Olympics, they are competitions made up of diversity. This is from every country. All colors, cultures, orientations, almost everyone is represented. Paul talks about this in his letter to the Ephesians. He tells us that unity consists of one body, one Spirit, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God. It is not about everyone looking the same or thinking the same or doing things the same way. I believe unity happens when we can celebrate diversity. It is not necessarily how something gets done. Each one of us may do something different. The challenge is to affirm the person regardless of how it gets done. Celebrating diversity is still very difficult for many people. Instead of being able to celebrate it, there are many who fear it. As a result, those who are different from a person often get rejected and told they are not wanted. Discrimination is real. We hear many slurs on the news. People often find a way to justify it. It is wrong and it is not the community that God is looking for. In our 2nd lesson today, Paul reminds the Ephesians and each of us that we have been given gifts to support and upbuild people and not tear them down. Paul says that we are to grow up and not be blown around by every wind of doctrine. The body of Christ is about everyone working together to build each other up. The challenge is to find the things that we have in common and stick to them. Even though we may not hear love in the news and other media outlets, we are still called to love. It may mean muting ads, which I have been doing. To find out true information, one needs to look elsewhere. We are called to speak the truth in love. This is very difficult to do at times. In our Gospel lesson today, we hear the crowd asking for it and Jesus offering them as well as us, the bread of life, in order to be strengthened and connected to him. When we are seeking the bread of life it makes us stop and remember that it is not about us, but actually about we. We being God and our neighbors in all of their diversity. The crowds were not getting who Jesus was. Who is Jesus to us? Our Gospel lesson end with Jesus making a statement that he is the bread of life. Whoever comes to him will never be hungry whoever believe in him will never be thirsty. This is what we will explore next week in the sermon. Today Jesus offers us the bread of life to be strengthened, to give us eyes to see and ears to hear that we may celebrate diversity to create unity. Join In, Team Up, Get Strong, Keep On, and Celebrate God's beloved community. Let us pray: God of unity and diversity, You call us to celebrate diversity. You offer us you, the bread of life, to strengthen us and help us to see each other as gifts. May your Holy Spirit help us to receive you and continue creating unity as we celebrate the diversity that you have created. In Jesus name, Amen.
Today is the first of five Sundays with gospel readings from John 6, the first four of which focus on Jesus as bread of life. Today Jesus feeds thousands of people with five loaves and two fish. What we have, what we bring to Jesus' table, seems like it is not nearly enough to meet all the needs we see around us. But it is not the adequacy of our supplies or our skills that finally makes the difference: it is the power of Jesus working in the littlest and least to transform this world into the world God desires, a world where all the hungry are satisfied. Scripture Reading:2 Kings 4:42-44; 145:10-18; John 6:1-21
Dear Humans, Today Jesus and I sit-down with Johnny Palmadessa, a sharp young Democratic Strategist who found himself in the thick of chaos at the Trump campaign rally where a mass shooting occurred on Saturday. One innocent bystander lost their life, and Donald came within 2 inches bullet going through his brain. Johnny shares his firsthand account of the event. Jesus and I tried to wrap our minds around it, and let me tell you, it's not easy processing this kind of madness. Johnny's story is a sobering reminder of the real consequences of divisive rhetoric. It's a wake-up call, a cosmic nudge, if you will, to re-evaluate who you're supporting and why. Who will attract more chaos like a magnet in the future? Who will work to calm things down? So, do yourselves a favor and watch the full interview. Trust me, it's worth your time. You'll hear Johnny's harrowing experience, and maybe, just maybe, you'll come away with a clearer understanding of the gravity of the situation. Plus, Jesus and I throw in some of our classic banter to keep things light. You won't want to miss it. We continue our series in the Gospel of Luke, one of four eyewitness accounts of Jesus' words and works. In them we learn of his life, death, and resurrection to rescue a people of his own from among the nations—even us. Today Jesus calls a social outcast to follow him as a disciple. This made the Pharisees grumble, and it should make us wonder, “Why does he eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

You can grab the free workbook at www.catholicmomcalm.com/lent2024 Full text of St. Faustina's Diary. Reflection question: Say this prayer a few times and write down what comes up for you. What does the Lord put on your heart? Excerpt from St. Faustina's Diary for today (186): Today Jesus said to me, I desire that you know more profoundly the love that burns in My Heart for souls, and you will understand this when you meditate upon My Passion. Call upon My mercy on behalf of sinners; I desire their (93) salvation. When you say this prayer, with a contrite heart and with faith on behalf of some sinner, I will give him the grace of conversion. This is the prayer: “O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of Mercy for us, I trust in You.”
Today Jesus is giving you and me, Abraham and Isaac, Peter and the disciples, and the whole church catholic a test: will we choose God or will we choose the treasures of God? Too often we choose the treasures of God because we think they'll relieve our anxiety and worry and give us security. The truth is, though, that that is far from the truth. The more we try and hoard our treasures, the more worried and anxious we become. In that anxiety and worry, we try and rebuke Jesus when he comes to try and heal us. When we do this, he says to us what he said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not on the side of God but of men.” He doesn't say this to hurt us or to cast us into the darkness. On the contrary, he tells us this so that we would be reminded of who we naturally are and to lead us to the place where all of these treasures are sacrificed so that we might receive of the true riches of heaven thus freeing ourselves from all anxiety and worry.
Oh, for goodness sake, it was the polar vortex again! There I was, digging out the sweaters again, and turning up the thermostat to help the Propane Dealers Retirement Fund. And hoping the weatherman was wrong about snow and ice. But, you know, I had no right to gripe. I mean, some cities ran out of salt for their streets this past winter. My poor friends in places like Chicago, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Detroit, Boston, New York - they were "whomped" with storm after storm this past winter. And then we've got friends in places like western New York where they just get mountains and mountains of snow during the winter. If you had just moved to one of those snow-swamped places, it would have been easy to say, "It's always going to be winter. This much snow is never going to melt. It's just going to keep coming." I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Sick of Winter, Ready for Spring." Nope. It won't always be winter. There's hope. And hope has a name - spring. No matter how high the snowdrifts were, how endless the parade of winter storms, spring always comes. And that helps me grasp just what that precious word "hope" is all about. Hope-less means things can never change. But hope means things you've never been able to change can change because hope has a name. His name is Jesus. He's the One of whom the Bible says in our word for today from the Word of God, Hebrews 6:19, "We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure." As a follower of Jesus, I can be - for the hope-starved people around me - living proof that He could change what I could never change. Because of Jesus, a parent can change. A husband or wife can change. A family can change. Because of Jesus, a temper can change, a life of depression, or a fear of death. Jesus changes control freaks, chronic worriers, fearful people, and people who have always been defined by their pain. There's a magnet in us that attracts people to our Jesus. It's not our beliefs, the meetings we go to, the bad things we don't do. It's our hope. The Bible says folks will want to know "the reason for the hope you have" (1 Peter 3:15). When you meet Jesus, you experience the ultimate makeover miracle: "If anyone is in Christ," the Bible says, "he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!" (2 Corinthians 5:17). So we have hope to give! Hope of Jesus changing our dark side, our fears, our relationships, our eternity. So the most powerful tool I have to open a heart to Jesus is my story - My Hope Story. Because what people want to know about Jesus is, "What difference does He make?" Your Hope Story tells about how your stressful times are different because of Jesus, your lonely times, your sad times, your wounded times. The difference Jesus makes when there's bad news from the doctor, when your family's in chaos, when the one you were counting on walks out the door, or when you stand by the casket of the one you love. People can argue with your beliefs. They can't argue with your Hope Story. Once you were "blind." Now you "can see." The only explanation is Jesus. I always want to be looking for natural opportunities to share some part of how my life is different because of Jesus. As you listen to a person's story, the door opens for you to tell your story. And how His story - His dying for you - has changed your story and could change theirs forever. I am, and all my spiritual brothers and sisters are, living proof that it doesn't always have to be winter. Spring comes when Jesus comes. And maybe you've never experienced that hope for yourself. Today Jesus stands ready to give you the new beginning that your heart is hungry for. I'd love to introduce you to Him and help you know how to get started with Him. Just go to our website as soon as you can today ANewStory.com. It's time for spring.
