The College Essay Guy Podcast: A Practical Guide to College Admissions
Hi, friends, and welcome back to our series, "On Becoming: The Art and Craft of Personal Storytelling." In this series, we take a close look at personal essays written by real students, talking about why we love them, what makes them work, and how they came to be. In this episode, we share an essay that begins: "Robes are the textile version of comfort food; they're my chicken noodle soup." And it is indeed about the different robes the student wears and how each one reveals a different aspect of who the author is. I'm joined today by Andrew Callery, a college counselor at Detroit Country Day School who aside from his work helping his students tell their stories has, for the past 9 years, in his free time volunteered in our Matchlighters Scholars Program, where we pair high-achieving, low-income students with amazing counselors for 10 hours of free one-on-one support. If you are a high-achieving low-income student applying to college this year or are a counselor interested in volunteering, we'd love to have you. In today's episode, Andrew and I get into: Where this idea came from in the first place How the student chose which different sides of herself to focus on How students can briefly weave a learning difference into a single paragraph Two tips for sticking the landing when it comes to the ending of your personal statement If you're the kind of person who enjoys seeing how things get made, whether it's a great meal, a film scene, or a piece of writing, I have a feeling you might enjoy this one. Andrew Callery (he/him) is a graduate of Villanova University (B.A.) and the University of San Francisco (M.A.), where he studied Psychology with an emphasis in counseling. He's worked in both public and private high schools as a counselor and loves helping students craft essays that are genuine reflections of their lived experience. He uses active listening techniques to help students uncover unique ideas for essays that capture various aspects of their identity, values, challenges overcome and lessons learned, all the while blending in a healthy dose of humor and empathy. Andrew has worked for a number of years as an admissions reader with a highly selective institution, and has read thousands of essays as a result. He's currently working as a full-time college counselor at an independent school near Detroit, where he lives with his wife and two children. Enjoy. Play-by-Play: 2:47 – Andrew introduces the "robes" essay and the brainstorming exercise that inspired it. 4:41 – What are the benefits of brainstorming and "going broad" with early ideas? 5:57 – Andrew reads the essay, "Robes" 11:26 – What stands out for Andrew in reading the essay today? 12:25 – How did Andrew help the student identify the core values and life experiences to include in her essay? 17:22 – How does a simple, relatable metaphor immediately ground the reader in the student's world? 19:40 – How did the student weave in her experience with dyslexia without making it the central focus of her essay? 23:17 – What questions can students ask themselves to turn a simple anecdote into a meaningful "so what" moment? 26:02 – How can students weave in extracurricular achievements without sounding like they are bragging? 31:35 – How can a student effectively balance personal interests with academic goals in an essay? 35:27 – How did the student's love for thrifting from the 21 Details exercise become a metaphor for her interest in sustainable engineering? 39:28 – How can focusing on the future help a student find the right way to end their essay? 42:32 – What does Andew enjoy most about working with students on essays? 44:16 – Closing thoughts Resources: "Robes" essay Admission Nutrients The Roles & Identities Exercise 21 Details Exercise College Essay Guy's Personal Statement Resources College Essay Guy's College Application Hub
January 12, 1981. A dog wandered into the woods north of Houston and returned home carrying a decomposed human arm. Search parties found two bodies. A young man, bound and beaten to death. A young woman, strangled and posed in prayer. For 40 years, they remained unidentified. Buried in anonymous graves. Forgotten. Until genetic genealogy finally gave them their names: Harold Dean Clouse Junior, 21, and Tina Gail Linn Clouse, 17. A young couple from Florida who had moved to Texas with their one-year-old daughter, Holly. But when the families learned the truth, they asked one question investigators had never considered: where is the baby? No infant's body had been found with Dean and Tina. No Baby Doe cases matched. Had she been taken by the killers? Was she still alive? The search led to barefoot women in white robes, a nomadic religious cult called the Christ Family, and a baby left at an Arizona church. This is the story of a 42-year mystery, a daughter who grew up not knowing her own name, and a reunion that defied all odds.Become a Patreon or Apple + subscriber now for ealry and ad free access from as little as $1.69 a week. FULL EPISODE www.patreon.com/dopeypodcast Dave opens another Tuesday teaser by welcoming back Heart Attack Doug and immediately calling Patreon listeners winners and free listeners losers. Doug paints a hilarious picture of arriving at Dave's house to find him shuffling around in a heavy dusty Ralph Lauren robe and knit cap looking 40 years older than he is. They talk about Dave holding down the fort while his partner is away, buying three air conditioners for one room, family stress, and trying to stay productive. Dave describes making breakfast for Nora while Doug offers unsolicited nutrition takes and pushes cheap Aldi eggs. This spirals into a rant about dirty supermarkets, poor-quality yolks, and Popeyes chicken. The conversation shifts into anxiety territory as Dave admits fears of escalators, airports, and bridges. He tells stories about navigating giant Manhattan subway escalators as a kid and nearly panicking while driving over the Throgs Neck Bridge. Doug piles on while also admitting everyone has fears. They read Spotify and Patreon comments about Ray Brown, background noise, body image, and escalator anxiety. Dave uses the comments to plug Dopey's five-shows-a-week schedule and Patreon tiers, including stickers, socks, beanies, ad-free episodes, and even a $100-a-month life coaching tier. Before ending, Dave and Doug tease Doug's recent mysterious bad stretch known only as “two weeks,” available behind the Patreon wall. The show closes with a touching listener cover of the Dopey classic “Good So Bad,” recorded while missing Dopey Zoom because the fan wanted to get it right. FULL EPISODE IS ON PATREON - CHEAPOS! In this, the second half of their conversation, Lauren and Sally discuss Chiefs Victor and Charlo and the relationship between Jesuit missionaries and Montana's native people. The two also talk at length about Chief Charlo's 1876 speech, a lament of white politicians and settlers who evicted his people from the Bitterroot Valley after the tribe had always/only helped them, beginning with Lewis and Clark.

A week where the universe briefly chose kindness—payday landed just before Valentine's Day, which immediately raised suspicion—and then promptly reminded us not to get comfortable. The boiler at home base tapped out like it had hit its retirement age, forcing everyone to layer up indoors and question why heat is apparently a seasonal luxury. Macy's, meanwhile, stayed committed to its brand: charging luxury-tax prices for items powered entirely by nostalgia and vibes. Robes cost three figures, memories cost extra, and somehow the sale sign still felt disrespectful. Outside, New York City entered a full emotional spiral over a 1–3 inch snow forecast, triggering flashbacks, group chats, and pre-emptive panic shopping as if the forecast personally threatened our peace. Schools braced, commutes overreacted, and everyone acted like we were one inch away from total societal collapse. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Monday, hundreds of Brooklyn residents had no power or heat as temperatures plunged into the single digits following a devastating outage that started late Saturday.New York state was ranked second-worst in the US for its costly, stringent rules on child care centers, a new analysis claimed. And out in the American West, the urgent investigation into the apparent kidnapping of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie continued, a week after the mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie was reported missing in Arizona.

Step by step we carry peace,/Let the suffering slowly cease./Hearts awaken, fears release./Together we walk for peace. Episode #480: Michael Santi Keezing, a former Thai Forest monk, describes himself as both a Buddhist and a “post-Buddhist,” shaped by a lifelong effort to understand the mind, culture, and the limits of spiritual practice for someone raised in an intensely individualistic Western society. He recalls that before he ever meditated, he felt a persistent longing to understand consciousness, a “free-floating yearning” that led him into Eastern spirituality through books like Be Here Now, Siddhartha, and the works of Carlos Castaneda. Discovering a nearby monastery in the Ajahn Chah lineage, he eventually ordained, believing he was pursuing clear insight through what he calls Buddhist phenomenology. Only later did he recognize that trauma and a desire for safety also influenced his decision, as the monastery offered structure, belonging, and a refuge from uncertainty. Inside monastic life he set aside the intellectual world that once defined him, devoting himself to meditation and the Vinaya. Meditation gave him emotional clarity, while the discipline cultivated humility and restraint. Yet he also saw rigidity within Western monastic communities—an absolutism around hierarchy and rules that sometimes obscured compassion. A turning point came when he lived among Indonesian and Thai monks in Queens, where identical rituals felt more human and flexible, revealing that Western monastics inadvertently reshaped the tradition through their WEIRD conditioning. That conditioning, he says, produces inward-focused individuals burdened by psychic wounds, often misreading Buddhism through a modern psychological lens. Returning to the act of reading late in his monastic years, he encountered books on neuroscience, which reframed experiences he once interpreted through Buddhist metaphysics. Realizing that no single framework held all answers, he eventually moved beyond monasticism. Michael now emphasizes a practical understanding of not-self, rejects political quietism, and argues that wisdom must express itself as action and responsibility. Reflecting on Burma's struggle, he affirms that “justice can be achieved for the Burmese people,” holding hope while remainingcommitted to engagement.

Most people think they know what the Hare Krishna movement is, until they actually speak with a monk living the lifestyle. In this eye-opening conversation recorded at Spirit Fest USA, we sit down with Jadardana Krishna Das, a modern monk who breaks down the truth behind one of the world's most misunderstood spiritual traditions. If you've ever wondered what the robes mean, why monks shave their heads, what Krishna Consciousness actually teaches, or whether the Bhagavad Gita has anything to offer someone who isn't Hindu…this episode will challenge your assumptions and force you to see spiritual awakening in a completely different light. This isn't dogma. This isn't recruitment. This is practical mind-training, ancient consciousness science, and a path toward inner clarity that anyone, any faith, any background, can explore. What You'll Learn in This Episode:✔ What the Hare Krishna movement really teaches Not the stereotypes. Not the assumptions. The actual mission: raising consciousness, reconnecting with the soul, and empowering people from any background to develop a spiritual foundation. ✔ The surprising truth about the Bhagavad Gita It's not a “Hindu book.” It predates Hinduism and Buddhism and offers universal teachings on the mind, the self, and the battlefield within. ✔ Why monks shave their heads & wear orange robes Purification, simplicity, detachment, spiritual focus, and yes, hygiene. The symbolic meaning goes far deeper than most people realize. ✔ What the forehead markings really represent Not decoration...purification, protection, and identity within a specific philosophical lineage. ✔ Are Hare Krishnas trying to convert people? Short answer: no. Long answer: this episode explains why the movement focuses on knowledge, not recruitment. ✔ How chanting really works Why anyone, child or adult, any religion or none, can chant Hare Krishna and experience its effects anytime, anywhere. ✔ The monk's personal journey From sports, movies, and a secular upbringing…to a life-changing realization in college that led him to choose a life of spiritual training. Why This Conversation Matters:This isn't a fringe movement. This is one of the oldest consciousness-expansion systems on Earth. And it speaks directly to the problems modern seekers face:mental overwhelmlack of meaningdisconnection from selfthe inner “battlefield” the Gita describes so wellthe pressure of material lifethe desire for spiritual grounding without dogmaJadardana shows how these teachings are not about escaping life...they're about engaging with it from a higher state of awareness.Resources Mentioned:• Bhagavad Gita As It Is The recommended version with Sanskrit, translation, and commentary used in the Hare Krishna tradition. Just yesterday alone, three unbelievable judicial rulings came down that set Stigall off for the entire first half of the show. While there is much to discuss in the news, the role of the activist judiciary in this country is outsized and must be dealt with swiftly. Yes, the House is going to vote on the Epstein files and President Trump will sign off on whatever needs to be released. That’s a good thing. And yes, there are many questions surrounding the Butler Pennsylvania attempted assassination. Stigall gets into all of that today, but reminds you that if judges aren’t dealt with first, the other issues simply won’t matter. -For more info visit the official website: https://chrisstigall.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/chrisstigallshow/Twitter: https://twitter.com/ChrisStigallFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/chris.stigall/Listen on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/StigallPodListen on Apple Podcasts: https://bit.ly/StigallShowSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
If the Doctrine and Covenants is the capstone of the Restoration, how does it conclude? It ends with a booming warning and an urgent political declaration. D&C 133 provides the final marching orders for the Church: prepare for Christ's return. Summary: In this episode, we analyze the urgent call to action in the Appendix (D&C 133) and the foundational principles of religious liberty (D&C 134). D&C 133: The Prophetic Appendix. This section is a restatement of the urgent warnings in D&C 1. The Lord commands the Saints to "prepare ye, prepare ye" and to "go ye out from Babylon" to avoid the destruction of the last days. This involves the call to "be ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord." We explore the magnificent, yet terrifying, description of the Second Coming: Christ, "mighty to save," descending with "dyed garments"—red from having "trodden the wine-press alone"—a powerful symbol of both judgment and sacrificial love. The section concludes with the tender reassurance that "in all their afflictions he was afflicted." D&C 134: Church & State. Written in 1835, this declaration defines the Church's stance on civil governance, reflecting the persecution the Saints had endured. Government's Role: We believe governments are "instituted of God for the benefit of man" and should secure the "free exercise of conscience," property rights, and the protection of life. Freedom of Conscience: The central principle is clear: civil magistrates should "restrain crime, but never control conscience; should punish guilt, but never suppress the freedom of the soul." We advocate for a separation of Church and State, believing it is not right to "mingle religious influence with civil government" in a way that fosters one religion while suppressing another. Painful Compromises: We discuss the difficult historical context of verse 12, where the Church states it will "not interfere with bond-servants," revealing the painful compromises sometimes necessary in a fallen world to secure peace and the higher goal of preaching the gospel. Call-to-Action: What aspect of "Babylon" are you striving to leave behind this week? What does it mean to you to "be ye clean"? Share your commitment in the comments! You can't tell that it's organized but then how can you explain it? It doesn't occur that way in real time. But it is at this time occurring that way.
