Burnt Offerings is a podcast featuring horror movie, and music, news and reviews. Hosts Jared and Steve discuss horror films and whatever bands and releases they have been jamming all while downing a fine selection of cheap beer and malt liquor. Steve is a self proclaimed '80s slasher fan who doesn'…
Burnt Offerings Horror Podcast
Hard to believe Burnt Offerings has not covered a cannibal film until now. This episode we chop it up and chew the fat about Umberto Lenzi's 1980 release EATEN ALIVE! Part cannibal film and part Jonestown-esque cult. EATEN ALIVE! is a a solid predecessor to to Lenzi's cult favorite CANNIBAL FEROX which was released the following year. So, grab some Flavor-Aid and cobra venom and tune in.
It's October, so we had to come out of hiatus to record a new episode before Halloween. We are taking our first stab at a Don Dohler slab that oozes with atmosphere; his 1980 release FIEND. So, fill your chalice, put on your crushed velvet smoking jacket, and tune in.
We are taking it back to '89 talking about one of the best splatter films to come out of Germany. Olaf Ittenbach's BLAST PAST. When Olaf released this SOV gem, he showed just what could be done with this genre. So, tune in, drop out, and have some beers with your breakfast.
Who says you need buckets of blood and gratuitous nudity for a slasher to be good? Well, a lot of people, actually. But, they are wrong! We are back and talking about the 1982, often over looked, slasher THE HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW. This movie is an example of the right way to pull inspiration from other movies without blatantly ripping them off. So, kill your house mother, crack some cold ones, and tune in for this weeks installment of BURNT OFFERINGS!
What do you get when Joe D'Amato and George Eastman team back up after ANTHROPOPHAGUS to make an American style slasher? The masterpiece that is ABSURD (81). We are marking our return by talking about this absolute classic of Italian cinema. We also hit you with some bands to checkout, suggestions on what to watch so you don't have to think, and a summer time announcement. So, crack some cold ones, turn on, tune in, and drop out.
Our 5 month hiatus is over and we are talking about the 1988 home invasion/slasher/monster movie/revenge film GROTESQUE starring Linda Blair, Donna Wilkes, and Tab Hunter. This bad boy can fit so many genres. So, turn off City Baby Attacked By Rats, cracks some beers, and tune in.
This episode we are talking about Bret McCormick's Super 8 splatter classic THE ABOMINATION. If you haven't checked this one out, now is the time. Coughed up tumors, evangelical pastors, and the best dream sequence / gore reel money can buy. So, crack some cans and turn on, tune in, and drop out.
In December, a life changing event happened which delayed this episode from being uploaded until now. But, here it is, and we are talking about the ever gritty, 1984 release, COMBAT SHOCK. Probably one of the most straight forward and depression movies that Troma has ever released. Crack some cans and enjoy the soothing sounds of Burnt Offerings.
This episode we are joined by the husband and wife team of INDEPENDENT AMERICAN PICTURES, Anthony Moran & Rebecca Solano, to talk about their newest splatter filled horror film LET US IN! This movie is what independent low budget film making is all about. It features some familiar faces from the Detroit punk and metal scene, as well as amazing FX work by local favorite James Bell. Tune in and hear some great conversations as we chop it up with two true grit film makers. And, if you are in the Detroit area, be sure to catch the premiere screening at the UFO Factory on Saturday, October 15th! SUPPORT FILMS MADE IN DETROIT!!!
It is October and we are joined by Detroit's heavy metal miscreants ACID WITCH to talk about their freshly released album ROT AMONG US! We've had them on separately but, this is the first time getting the masterminds behind the witch, Slasher Dave and Tim Shagrat, on together. Aside from the new album we also bounce around talking about past releases, band history, a little on Detroit ghost stories and true crime, as well as what makes a good horror movie shirt and, there are no exceptions! Be sure to crack some beers, spark a joint, tune in, and drop out!
Our four month hiatus has come to an end and we are celebrating by talking about the best super 8 film ever made; Leif Jonker's DARKNESS! It is criminal that this is the only movie Leif made. You would be hard-pressed to find a more splatter filled vampire movie!
We are back and dusting the cobwebs off with this episode. Talking about the movies you go back to time-and-time again. The ones that are like a warm blanket when you are hungover or in a dark place. Are any of your comfort movies on our list? Listen to find out. If they are not, be sure to let us know what some of your favorite comfort films are.
Uploading an episode 3 months after recording it isn't that bad, right? Life got flipped turned upside down so, we took a little extended hiatus. Probably should have uploaded the episode before we did that. Anyway, we are back talking about the 1980 film FADE TO BLACK. We also touch on other movies and bands we have been digging that would be worth checking out, as well. So, crack some beers, pack some bowls, and tune in.
We are back with our first guest in over 2 years! Our long time friend Zach Gibson, drummer for the relentless grind band SHIT LIFE, as well as past and current drummer for a ridiculous amount of other bands, is joining us to talk about arguably one of the most controversial movies released; A SERBIAN FILM. Love it or hate it, the fact that this movie is still able to piss off non-horror fans, as well as horror fans, 11 years after it's release is kind of impressive. And, there is no one better to talk about this slice of cinema with us than one of it's bigger proponents. Tune in and smoke em if you got em!
This week we are talking about one of the seminal Joe D'Amato films; his 1980 release ANTHROPOPHAGUS (The Grim Reaper, The Beast, Man-Eater, The Grim Ripper, Antropophagus). This one ranks high on our list of Italian horror, with good reason. Be sure to tune-in to this gut munching episode.
Halloween is almost upon us. Instead of doing the normal Halloween themed movie, this year we thought we would talk about one of the early films inspired by NOTLD, which has nothing but atmosphere and spooky vibes; Amando de Ossorio's 1972 classic TOMBS OF THE BLIND DEAD. Although, this was dubbed and released in North America, it is definitely better to avoid that version and find the original Spanish release. We touch on the many reasons why in this episode. We also give a run down of movies we've been watching, bands we've been jamming, and recent activities in the Burnt Offerings camp. And, if you haven't heard, ACID WITCH has a new release! Go scoop that shit up.
It is October and we couldn't be more stoked here at the Burt Offerings manor. Kicking the best season off with Tobe Hooper's 1981 carnival catastrophe THE FUNHOUSE. We also touch on which Michael Myers mask was the worst, and the joys of 80s and 90s cable. So, rise and grind, and kick off October with some Burnt Offerings!
We are back talking about the 1989 low budget, Midwest zombie flick THE DEAD NEXTDOOR. Filmed in Akron, Ohio, and banked rolled by Sam Raimi, this shot on super8 movie is worth checking out.
We had a technical difficulty so, the audio is a little sub-par on this recording but, it's not horrible. We are back and delving into the Mattei & Fragasso 1980 virus zombie flick HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD (Virus, Zombie Inferno, Zombie Creeping Flesh, Dusk of the Dead, and many many more). If you dig al the spaghetti zombie/cannibal flicks that were popping out of Italy in the '80s, you should already be a fan of this movie. We go over some bands that are absolutely worth checking out, Steve gives a Cheers run down, and we even touch on the finer points of Howard the Duck. Crack some beers, hit your bong, and tune in.
Hey! We finally got off our lazy asses and uploaded our last episode. Back when we first started we would sometimes do three movies an episode and spend more time BSing than talking about the movies. So, we decided to start taking movies from those episodes, that we feel didn't get the attention that they deserved, and revisiting them. The first one is Fulci's 1980 release CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD (Gates of Hell). This was only briefly touched on in an earlier episode and it 100% deserves more attention.
On this episode we dig in to the 1981 slasher/american giallo NIGHT SCHOOL (Terror Eyes). This is probably the closest you will get to an Italian giallo outside of Italy. We also give a sneak peak to the Mannequin 2 segment Steve will be doing each episode. Add in some music and movie suggestion and you have a well rounded episode. Heads roll, mannequins roll, crack a beer and check it out.
This week we are digging into our list of sequels that deserve some mention. We are all over the map with this one; horror, '80s comedy, action. Nothing is off limits.
What's up everyone!? Burnt Offerings is getting back to business as usual. Cheap beer, cheap gore, and not so cheap tapes. This week we are talking about the Lamberto Bava directed 1980s horror MACABRE (The Frozen Terror). Based off a supposed true story, this is a decent first solo effort by Bava. Aside from the normal list of bands and movies we always give, we also did our first surprise live stream while recording this episode. Cheers to those that found it and tuned in!
This episode we are back in the realm of 80s slashers. Talking about the 1986, 'Oh no. Our prank, which was totally not a prank, went horribly wrong and we almost killed someone', slasher SLAUGHTER HIGH. Out of the three better known movies based around April Fools day, this is one of the tops. Per usual we also hit you with a list of bands worth checking out, as well as some movies that we have been watching. So, grab your favorite vide and tune in.
We are dipping back into the Lenzi catalog for this one. Talking about his 1975 giallo EYEBALL. Red herrings, red ponchos, red gloved killer; this one has it all. What have we been up to? Well, we are updating our merch starting with the new shirts we just put up in our store. What have we been watching and jamming? Tune in and find out.
This episode we are trying to make sense of the cluster fuck that is ZOMBIE 3. Between subpar scripts, Fulci's early exit from the directors chair, and multiple fill in directors this movie was destined to be the splatter mess that it is. ZOMBIE 3 may not be the sequel we wanted but, it's the sequel we deserved.
How has it taken us this long to talk about this movie!? We are talking about one of our favorite Lenzi films, 1980s NIGHTMARE CITY (City of the Walking Dead, Incubo). This is THE quintessential radiation infected non-zombie vampire movie. We also hit you with a handful of things worth checking out music and movie wise.
We are kicking in 2021 by talking about the 1986, filmed in Italy set in America, slasher BODY COUNT directed by RUGGERO DEODATO. This one seems to slip under a lot of radars and should definitely be checked out.
We are delivering our Thanksgiving episode a little late this year. We are talking about the 1981 slasher HOME SWEET HOME (aka Slasher in the House)starring Body By Jake himself Jake Steinfeld. How did we spend our Thanksgiving? What bands have we been spinning? Who was the second gunman on the grassy knoll? Tune in to find out these answers and more!
Technical difficulties be damned! We are back talking about the 1995 Swedish splatter comedy EVIL ED. If you like Dead Alive and Evil Dead 2, this is right up your alley. We also hit on some bands worth checking out if you can pronounce their names.
Lets end summer with one last summer time slasher. The 1988 Italian American slasher WELCOME TO SPRING BREAK (aka Nightmare Beach). This movie is a decent blend of elements from both the Italian giallo and the American slasher wrapped up nicely with a score by Claudio Simonetti. We also on Halloween foods, what we've been watching, and a few bands to dig into.
This week we are grabbing another slab from the SOV stack. Talking about the 1987 one off LUNCH MEAT. Not the best SOV film but, definitely not the worst, and definitely a loved by both of us. We also hit you with some awesome video store memories, try to crack the case of 'what tape did Jared rent that his dad made him return?', and gt into a few musical debates. So, order a pizza, crack some beers, and enjoy the show.
What happens when you make a movie that is behind the times in some aspects, and ahead of the times in others? It gets shelved for 4 years. Which is the case for the 1976 movie SAVAGE WEEKEND (Killer Behind the Mask, The Upstate Murders). In this episode, we discuss this often overlooked entry in the early slasher catalog. We also throw out some bands worth checking out, maybe go on a tangent or two, and Jared might have had more than a few.
Shit still sucks, but we are back. We are clearing the cobwebs by talking about the 1986 Canadian film CITY IN PANIC (aka The AIDS Murders). Aside from talking about, what some would call, a controversial movie, we also hit you with a list of bands worth checking out as well as what we have been watching while on quarantine.
We are taking it back to 1973 to talk about the Rodger Watkins THE LAST HOUSE ON DEAD END STREET (The Fun House, Cuckoo Clocks of Hell). This movie had a layer of mystery surrounding it for 20 plus years. Rumors of it being a product of the Mexican Mafia, to it being a legit snuff film made their way around until the year 2000. We also touch on our normal bands and movies we've been checking out. You should check em out too. Either way, crack a cold one and tune in.
It's the time of year for Hallmark cards, shitty chocolates, and scorned childhood crushes trying to kill you in a hospital. This episode we are talking about the 1982 Valentine's Day slasher X-RAY (Hospital Massacre, Be My Valentine...Or Else, Ward 13). We ended up doing things a little different by jumping right into talking about the movie instead of boring you with our personal tales. For those like like our witty chit-chat; we saved that for the end. We got bands worth checking out, movies worth watching, and Steve found that the claw is the law.
On this episode, we eventually get around to talking about the 1988 Spanish/U.S. slasher EDGE OF THE AXE. Whether you just picked up the Arrow blu-ray, or are watching it on VHS like your friends Jared and Steve, be sure to tune in and listen to our completely sober review. We also got a list of records, movies, and bands that are coming out of hibernation.
It's 2020 and we are are talking about another Italian film. This time around it is Fulci's 1990 meta horror A CAT IN THE BRAIN. There are a lot of mixed reviews about this one. And, even though we might have been a little too drunk to break down everything we could in this movie, we are both big fans of it. So, get on board the Perversion and lets go for a ride.
Another random hiatus is over and our Christmas episode is finally uploaded after the new year. This year we talk about the sleazy holiday classic, CHRISTMAS EVIL. This one didn't seem to get talked about much until recent years. Which, is a shame, because it is one of the best Christmas horror movies made. Besides all that, we hit you with a bunch of bands to check out. And, Steve does his top releases of 2019.
The great white north has given us a shit ton of great horror movies. THE GATE may not be the best. But, it is definitely up there. And, if you had HBO in the early '90s, chances are you saw this movie more than a few times. Aside from opening gate ways to hell, we recap some killer shows we caught as well as offer up some bands that are worth a listen. So, crack some beers, and tune in. Sacrifyx is law!
Another All Hallows Eve is upon us. Lets summon some demos and party with the dead! This episode we are chatting about the 1988, Halloween party time movie, NIGHT OF THE DEMONS. This is a movie you either like or love. Because, there is nothing to hate. So, once all the razor blade apples have been handed out, and you take care of your sour balls, be sure to end the night with us.
How do you get everyone to be pissed off by the end of your movie? Reveal that every death was fake and all part of your rich friends business idea. We are talking about the 1986 slasher, APRIL FOOL'S DAY. Even with the lack of on-screen kills, and gore, this movie still has some good things going for it. Namely, the cast. So, crack open a Hamm's and tune in.
Buddy's got an axe to grind, and we have beers to drink. This week we are talking about the 1987 slab SLAUGHTERHOUSE. This one is definitely a product of it's time. Coming out when the slasher genre was all but exhausted. But, showing that is was not completely dead. Aside from our academic level film critic, we also give you some tunes to listen to. We might go on another remake tangent after watching the new Black Christmas remake trailer. Tune in to find out.
It took us 2 years, but we finally got to Bava's A BAY OF BLOOD (Twitch of the Death Nerve, Carnage, Blood Bath). Where would the American slasher be if this movie was never made? Probably pretty close to where it now. But, a certain franchise would be a little different, I would bet. Besides talking about the grandfather of the American slasher, we also run down a list of bands we've been spinning, as well as a list of movies worth checking out. Also, what 90s and early 2000s shows just had new specials released? Tune in a find out. Or, Google it.
The gruesome twosome is back! We are picking up where we left off and talking about the 80s slasher THE DORM THAT DRIPPED BLOOD (Pranks, Death Dorm). Who makes their first appearance in this film? And, what other movie, that we already covered, does this one remind us of? We also drop some bands and a list of other good stuff worth checking out. Tune in and feel free to reach out with any questions or comments.
We hope you did all your calisthenics. Your lungs. Your squat thrusts. Because this week we are talking about the 1984 athletic slasher FATAL GAMES. This movie kind of reminds us of another slasher. But, we just can't put our finger on it. Oh well. I'm sure they are nothing alike. Anyway, we also talk about some bands we saw and some bands worth checking out. Is winning worth killing for? I mean; probably. Tune in to find out if this movie is worth killing for.
We are taking a trip back to the sleazy streets of '70s New York and talking about the 1979 Abel Ferrara release THE DRILLER KILLER. We also give our opinion on the PET SEMETARY remake. So, pull out your favorite Roosters album and tune in. Just make sure to watch those long distance calls.
Random hiatus is over and we are talking about what is arguably one of Argento's last really good movies; 1987's OPERA. He went back to his roots and showed he could still do it. Too bad that didn't really last into the 90s, that much. What were we up to on our little break? What awesome bands are we going to try talking you into checking out? Tune in and find out.
We are back talking about, yet, another 80s slasher. This time it is 1984s THE INITIATION. This movie seemed to have slipped under a lot of peoples radar. Also, there seems to be pretty mixed reviews among the people that have seen it. We touch on the reasoning behind both of those. We also hit you with a list of bands to check out along with thoughts on a new horror movie in theaters.
This week we are talking about a Fulci film that tends to get overlooked. Possibly, because it is sandwiched between, almost, everyone of his heavy hitters. THE BLACK CAT is a retelling of an Edgar Allan Poe story. How faithful to the source material is the movie? You will have to tune in to find out. We also have all standard band and movie recommendations. We know that's what you really listen to us for.
This episode we are talking about the 1973 giallo that lent quite a bit to '80s slashers. We are talking about Sergio Martino's TORSO. Aside from leather gloves and hacksaws, we have flooded basements, King Diamond, and plenty of other bands and movies that should be checked out. So, tune in and get lost in the psychosexual mind.
