There have been many horror writers that have been important to the genre, but few have had the outsized impact of the one and only Chas. Balun. Whether it was his work in Fangoria, Gorezone, or his own magazine Deep Red, even if you didn't see his name at the head of the article, you knew it was him within a few sentences, by either by the tone of the writing, or maybe the films he was covering. Chas' style was humorous and more than a little confrontational, but he was always waving the flag in support of movies that he felt were important and hadn't received enough attention. Sure, they tended to be on the gory side, but for Chas. it wasn't just about the gore. Not entirely, anyway. While the three of us knew his work and the impact it had on us personally, for this very special episode, we felt we needed to talk with other folks who were just as impacted by him, and also knew him personally. In the second half of the show, you'll hear from John Szpunar, author of Xeroxferox: The Wild World of the Horror Film Fanzine and Blood Sucking Freak: The Life and Films of the Incredible Joel M. Reed; Art Ettinger, editor at Ultra Violent magazine; and finally Shawn Lewis, creator of Rotten Cotten and Eibon Press. They all share their own stories of Chas, and we all discuss the profound the impact Chas. had on us and on the horror genre in general.  Don't miss this one! Films mentioned in this episode: Abomination (1988), Bad Taste (1987), The Beyond (1981), Beyond the Darkness (1979), Blood Sucking Freaks (1976), Blue Velvet (1986), Braindead (1992), Bug (1975), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), City of the Walking Dead (1980), Dellamorte Dellamore (1994), The Exorcist (1973), Friday the 13th (1980), Guinea Pig 2: The Flower of Flesh and Blood (1985), Hell of the Living Dead (1980), Last House on Dead End Street (1973), Last House on the Left (1972), Mad Ron's Prevues from Hell (1987), The Nest (1987), Night of the Demon (1980), The Omen (1976), Pieces (1982), Splatterfest Exhumed (2024), Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Tombs of the Blind Dead (1972), Zoltan: Hound of Dracula (1977), Zombie (1979)

Vampires! Undead creatures of the night who people also find really hot! If you think fancying a walking corpse is #problematic, wait until you see the actions of Vampire, the imaginatively-named vampire played by Martin Kemp in 1995's Embrace of the Vampire. In Anne Goursaud's film, he's looking to get his fangs on an underage girl before she's legal, just like [NAME REDACTED ON LEGAL ADVICE] There are more tangents than usual on this episode, possibly so Graham and guest host Robyn Adams don't have to spend any more time talking about this deeply gross central plot. Back in ancient times, before Netflix and Amazon Prime, before Hulu and YouTube, even before DVDs and Blu-rays, if films weren't available to you from either your local video stores, or if you wanted to see an uncut print of a movie, or even one that wasn't released on VHS, the place you could find them would be in fuzzy gray market of the bootlegs. These types of vendors were a staple to a lot of the early movie conventions, where fans could find titles that never even knew were out there.  Some of us are old enough to remember being able to finally see the uncut full letterboxed version of Lucio Fulci's The Beyond, after years of suffering though only being able to see the heavily edited Seven Doors of Death. As your collection grew, you would usually start trading with others, increasing your collection even more, as well as helping to spread the love and passion of these amazing films. This is what we're discussing in this episode, so sit back and either reminisce with us, or learn about the good old days, when we were happy for a 5th generation grainy print of Anthropophagus that had the infamous fetus scene! Films mentioned in this episode: Anthropophagus aka The Grim Reaper (1980), Army of Darkness (1992), Bad Taste (1987), The Beyond aka Seven Doors of DeathT (1981), Beyond the Darkness (1979), Blood from the Mummy's Tomb (1971), Braindead aka Dead Alive (1992), Cannibal Ferox aka Make Them Die Slowly (1981), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), City of the Living Dead aka Gates of Hell (1980), A Cold Night's Death (1973), Dawn of the Dead (1978), Dellamorte Dellamore (1994), Emanuelle and the Last Cannibal aka Trap Them and Kill Them (1977), Faces of Death (1978), Female Vampire (1973), Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1971), Friday the 13th (1980), Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell (1974), The Ghost Galleon (1974), Guinea Pig: Flower and Flesh and Blood (1985), Hardware (1990), The Haunting (1963), I Drink Your Blood (1971), Jungle Holocaust (1977), Lady Frankenstein (1971), Mad Love (1935), Man Made Monster (1941), Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994), Meet the Feebles (1989), Mondo Magic (1975), Nekromantik (1988), Nekromantik 2 (1991), Night of the Seagulls aka Night of the Death Cult (1975), Opera (1987), Return of the Living Dead (1985), The Third Eye (1966), Tombs of the Blind Dead (1972), Zombie (1979)

Depending on when you not only grew up, but grew up with the horror genre could define what films you like, and what you don't like. But then there are other fans that open up the borders and search outside their comfort zone. In this episode, we discuss those ideas with our special guest, S.A. Bradley, author of Screaming for Pleasure: How Horror Makes You Happy and Healthy, as well as the host for the podcast Hellbent for Horror. This isn't an episode about specific films, though plenty are mentioned and discussed in great detail, but also on how they are received by the current audiences, as well as the older, and sometimes younger audiences, and what the differences are. These are the films mentioned in this episode: 3 on a Meathook, Anthropophagus (1981), Babadook (2014), Barbarian (2022), Bunny Lake is Missing (1965), Burial Ground (1981), The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), Cannibal Ferox (1981), Cocaine Bear (2023), The Cursed (2021), Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Dark Shadows (1966-71), Dawn of the Dead (1978), Dracula (1931), Deranged (1974), Devil Dog: Hound of Hell (1978), The Exorcist (1973), The Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977), Frankenstein (1931), Friday the 13th: Part III (1982), From Beyond (1986), The Godfather (1972), The Godfather II (1974), The Green Slime (1968), Halloween (1978), The Haunting (1963), Hellraiser (2022), Hereditary (2018), Jaws (1975), Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977), Maniac (1980), Midsomer (2019), Night of the Living Dead (1968), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Nosferatu (1922), The Phantom of the Opera (1925), Psycho (1960), The Omen (1976), Onibaba (1964), Ringu (1998), The Ritual (2017), Rocky (1976), Rocky II (1979), Scream 6 (2023), Skinamarink (2022), Sleep Tight (2011), Snuff (1975), Taxi Driver (1976), Tenebrae (1982), Terrified (2017), Terrifier (2016), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), The Thing (1982), The Thing from Another World (1951), Tombs of the Blind Dead (1972)

The current theme is A Knight's Tale, and this week, Jensen decided to pull Tombs of the Blind Dead from 1972 directed by Amando de Ossorio out of the Body Bag! We talk about one very very important thing that made this film less than perfect easy to say. But we also talk about some of the scenes that were giving us Argento vibes for sure. Also, I guess that Spain didn't believe in stunt doubles in the 70's, but DAMN! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thefrightcrew/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thefrightcrew/support

There is no better time to be a movie fan because of all the incredible releases that keep coming out, not just here in the states, but around the world. We'll then look at a classic short film, and then move on to “You Are Not My Mother,” a weird one from Ireland. Finally, “We're All Going to the World's Fair” is a good place to avoid. As a bonus this week, we'll look at another Cushing-Lee collaboration, “I, Monster” from 1971 and “Who Can Kill A Child?” A creepy Spanish from 1976: “I, Monster” (1971) “Who Can Kill A Child” (1976) Four years ago this week... Episode 207 We're back to our usual lineup of four movies and a short film this week. We'll start with “Curse of the Blind Dead.” A sad, almost indie-level production of a reboot from 2019. Then we'll take a look at the new “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” from this year, which is not a reboot. We'll go back in time and through “The Gate,” a fun one from 1987, and then we'll take some time for dinner, “Bones and All” from this year. As a bonus this week, we'll look at a pair of awful 1960s films, both starring John Carradine: “Blood of Dracula's Castle” (1969) “Gallery of Horror” (1967) Four years ago this week... This time vosotros reviewed a low-budget euro-70s movie about knights templar-themed zombies that rise from the dead to vampire up slutty blood and ride around town on mysteriously-sourced horses. It's wacky. It's zany. It likes to give the audience a reason to not be sad when a character dies. Perhaps they're creepy. Perhaps they experimented with homosexuality in their youth. Perhaps they're some kind of criminal. Content Warning: we discuss this movie's casual depiction of sexual assault and rape. The movie doesn't seem to think it's that big of a deal, but it's honestly pretty upsetting. If you don't want to see that or a child crying while being drenched in their mother's lifeblood, watch the censored American cut. The importance of the movie poster is almost lost in this day and age. With the internet flooding social media with trailers, photos, and all sorts of advertisements, the poster art might get lost in the shuffle. But decades ago, it was the first thing used to promote an upcoming feature film. It had to reach out and grab hold of your eyes, telling your brain you need to see this film. When a film is popular in the horror genre, most likely it will have a sequel. Or two. Or nine. When quality goes out the window to make a quick buck. Or is that completely true? Are there sequels out there that maybe not be as good as the original, but are still entertaining? Or, is there a sequel that actually surpasses the original? Before scoff, put some thought into that question. Or, listen to this episode first, then give it some thought. Either way, come listen to us rant and ramble on some of the sequels that we think are pretty fun, well made, or just a complete waste of time! It's zombie week as Becky and Alicia are joined by Thea Munster as they dig up 1985's Day of the Dead (directed by George A. Romero) and Return of the Living Dead (directed by Dan O'Bannon). Thea Munster, is a musician, coordinator of odd occurrences, vintage hearse driver and performer. Her love of the strange and unusual led her to create the Toronto Zombie Walk in 2003. As the first event of its kind it became an annual Toronto tradition, attracting thousands of people from all walks of life, and death. Thea has been featured in the documentaries Doc of the Dead, Dead Meat Walking, and most recently Raising the Dead on Hollywood Suite. Thea was also honoured with the role of a zombie in George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead, the part of a medium in The Paranormal Show, and recently designed the costume and played the role of the blind dead knight in Chris Alexander's latest film Scream of the Blind Dead. Thea continues to explore her passion for performance, horror and the otherworldly by cultivating her talent in music with a focus on the theremin. Her adeptness with the theremin has garnered her much attention. Thea performed at the Hendrick's Gin hot air balloon lounge in the summer of 2018 and 2019, and her skills have been featured in Rue Morgue Magazine and on Rue Morgue TV in 2021. She has also added theremin and keyboard tracks to many albums created by artists around the globe and formed her own horror band, Night Chill.
