This week on the I Hate Critics Movie Review Podcast… Sean and Jeff have a little fun at the expense of fragile film bros who are convinced they've somehow “ruined” Disney's Snow White — spoiler alert: they didn't. This week we take a look at Lamberto Bava's first official director's credit with the incredibly tasteless and disgusting piece of southern-fried necrophilia, Macabre from 1980. It's one of those movies that makes you really work for the goods since the worthwhile parts of the movie lie almost entirely in the final third after a lively and berserk setup. It'll make you wonder precisely how long you could preserve a severed head in your average consumer freezer. Everyone's insane in this one, including the horrible little girl and you'll be hard pressed to find an actor more deeply committed to overacting than Bernice Stegers. The story so far: After almost a year of being trapped in an underground VHS movie rental store managed by a magical anthropomorphic mole man, the boys find themselves curse by a box that's swapped the heads between their bodies. Maybe an obscure 90's giallo could break the curse...This week on the podcast, it's time for Italian cinema! Join the boys as they indulge in Lamberto Bava's 1992 psychological-thriller-giallo Body Puzzle. Will they lose themselves as they investigate the grisly series of murders surrounding a beautiful widow, or will they get distracted talking about bunks, Bavas, snorting salt, and dangerous horse boys. Also hopefully they can break this curse that's got their heads swapped between bodies. Definitely doesn't end in another grisly multi-murder. Supporter Leigh's chosen a cult-classic horror movie this week with Demons from 1985. Directed by Lamberto Bava and produced by Dario Argento, is a classic Italian horror film known for its intense gore, vibrant visuals, and relentless pace. The production took place in Berlin, with much of the action set inside an old movie theater, where a group of strangers attends the screening of a mysterious horror film. Notable for its high-energy approach and practical effects, with Bava and Argento collaborating to create a visceral experience. The transformation sequences and makeup effects were designed to be as grotesque and graphic as possible, setting a new standard for splatter horror. The soundtrack, featuring a mix of heavy metal and synth-driven music from bands like Motley Crue and Billy Idol, heightened the film's aggressive and frenetic atmosphere. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: A group of people were invited to a special screening at a mysterious Berlin cinema. Unbeknownst to them, the film they watch is a demonic horror, and when one of the attendees gets injured by a prop mask from the display, she begins to transform into a demon herself. Chaos erupts as the infection spreads, turning the moviegoers into ferocious, bloodthirsty demons. The survivors are forced to fight their way out of the sealed theater while the terrifying situation escalates. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

In 1974 Mario Bava was struggling after a series of financial failures and decided to turn towards a genre completely new to him: Poliziotteschi! Adapting a crime story by Michael J. Carroll, he was almost finished filming when the producer filed for bankruptcy, leaving the film to sit on a shelf for twenty years (well after Bava's death in 1980). On this episode of WILD IN THE STREETS we take a look at the revived film RABID DOGS, which exists in FIVE different versions - most notably an unfinished workprint version and a re-edited version with new sequences filmed by Lamberto Bava retitled KIDNAPPED! Was it worth the wait, or should these dogs be put down? LISTEN AND FIND OUT! The post Episode 231 – Wild in the Streets – Rabid Dogs (aka Kidnapped) (1974) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.
It's been a long time coming, but your aquatic explorers here at Horror Movie Night have uncovered a genetically-engineered prehistoric fish with freaking tentacles on its butt and it's not too happy about being made by some horny scientist and his boss's cheating wife (they were going to make a fortune off of this somehow, but get killed before they quite figure out how). Long story short, we're talking about Lamberto Bava's DEVIL FISH (1984), aka MONSTER SHARK, aka DEVOURING WAVES, aka MONSTER FROM THE RED OCEAN, aka SHARK: RED IN THE WATER. We don't know why it needed so many names, but this goofy Italian sci-fi horror has so many twists that it's more than a giant killer fish movie, bleeding into giallo and exploitation at times. It needs to be seen to be believed, but we still try our best to convey just how wild this one is! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On this episode, James Hales returns to discuss 1985's Italian supernatural horror film "Demons" (Italian: Dèmoni) directed by Lamberto Bava and produced by Dario Argento with Aaron and Derek. They talk about Bava's involvement with the project in comparison with Argento and other collaborators, how the movie seems to genre hop, and several of the usual Italian horror film tropes. They also get into the meta plot set up with the fictional movie and theater, red herrings and plot holes, the unnecessary punk scenes, how it pokes fun at societal panic, and many other aspects of the film. Aaron put on that mask and scratched himself, get it? Derek became a demon. James is an instrument of evil, like they said in the damn movie! This week on the podcast, an unheralded "sequel" to the first two Demons, which Demons 3 has nothing to do with. Oops. At least Lamberto Bava is in the director's chair. We're in Southern Italy. An American family is coming down from Milan on vacation, and they have rented a sprawling castle. What could possibly go wrong? Turns out, a lot. Demons III: The Ogre contains no demons. "I was just blown away by how sh*t yet how good it is at the same time, it is phenomenal"-Chris. Aaron and Chris from 'Semi-Skeptic' podcast introduce Sean to Lamberto Bava's Demons (original title Demoni). Warning: This podcast gets rather sweary. Discussion Points: -Aaron and Chris are brutally honest about why they chose this film. -Aaron thinks this film ranks better than The Shawshank Redemption (1994). -Sean does his best to lay-out the plot of the film. -The amazing soundtrack by Claudio Simonetti. -Sean had issues with the pacing of the film, but applauds the practical effects. -Do not use this film for pick-up tips. -The state of modern horror. Raised Questions: -Would you rather have brutally honest podcasters? -Is 'Tony the Pimp' a legend? -Did Scream 2 rip-off this film? -Are they pumping pheremones into this cinema? -Why did the Coca-Cola scene cause so much controversy? -Why won't we see Demons (1985) at the Cannes Film Festival? -Are there too many podcasts? You've made it to our third episode covering secondary sequels. Good job! On this episode we brought our good friend Orion Oblivion back on the show to discuss Lamberto Bava's follow up to the sensational Demons. The demonic hordes are back, and this time its PRIME TIME! After laying waste to a theater and their inhabitants, our blue, glazed, vein-y villains have traversed inter-dimensionally through the home television of a bratty teen, infecting her and successive denizens of a high rise apartment complex with their diabolical contagion. And the only way to escape their wrath is by...grappling hook and repelling equipment. In this world, only wealthy amateur rock climbers survive. Our featured band for this episode is legendary brit punks Blitz with the track "Telecommunication" from their phenomenal album "Second Empire Justice". What's up, Rotters! This week we're discussing one of my favourite 80s horror Trashterpieces of all time: DEMONI/DEMONS from Lamberto Bava. Produced by Dario Argento and with a soundtrack featuring some of the sickest rock songs, this practical, gooey, FIVE STAR movie has been on my list to cover for a long time. Joining me to discuss are the awesome dudes from Epic Film Guys (Justin, Jeremy and Brady) and it was such a pleasure to have them back on the show. Get ready to sell your ass in the men's room because we're getting locked in a theatre with a theatre troupe in Michele Soavi's giallo-cum-slasher Stage Fright (1987)! Joining us for the conversation is Arrow Video contributor and Fragments of Fear co-host Rachael Nisbet! After trying to figure out why Stage Fright is included in lists of gialli, we go all in on Soavi's directorial debut and discuss how his tutelage from Dario Argento and Lamberto Bava fueled his creative vision for this film.Plus, a subversive opening scene, another dull final girl, a delightfully sassy gay character, horny orderlies, one enormous skeleton key, face-level glory holes and...toilet troubles?
