Black Sunday (1960), Blood and Black Lace (1964), and A Bay of Blood (1971) There are films by certain directors that are truly iconic—classics of the genre we sometimes assume everyone has already seen. But it's easy to forget that, right now, there are fans just beginning their journey into horror. Whether due to age or a newfound curiosity, they're taking their first steps into the genre. For those unfamiliar with him, we'd like to introduce one of horror's true maestros: Mario Bava. And for those already acquainted with his work, maybe it's time for a revisit—to once again be stunned by what he brings to the screen. If it's been a few years, you may find yourself seeing things in a whole new way. That's one of the beautiful things about cinema. The three films we've chosen highlight important parts of Bava's career and show how his work helped shape entire subgenres—from gothic horror to giallo to the slasher film. Whether you're discovering him for the first time or coming back for a fresh look, these films are a perfect place to begin. One quick correction: Edgar Wallace was a British writer, not American. Films mentioned in this episode: Baron Blood (1972), A Bay of Blood (1971), Black Sabbath (1963), Black Sunday (1960), Blood and Black Lace (1964), Caltiki the Immortal Monster (1959), The Church (1989), Creature with the Blue Hand (1967), Curse of the Crying Woman (1963), Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Danger: Diabolik (1968), The Day the Sky Exploded (1958), Death Walks at Midnight (1972), Death Walks in High Heels (1971), Deep Red (1975), The Demon (1982), Demons (1985), Django Kill…If You Live, Shoot! (1967), Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs (1966), Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1932), Erik the Conqueror (1961), Eyeball (1975), The Four of the Apocalypse (1975), Frankenstein '80 (1972), Frankenstein Island (1981), Friday the 13th (1980), Friday the 13th (1981), The Giant of Marathon (1959), The Girl Who Knew Too Much (1963), The Great Silence (1968), Hatchet for a Honeymoon (1970), Hercules in the Haunted World (1961), Horror of Dracula (1958), Inferno (1980), I Vampiri (1957), Knives of the Avenger (1966), Long Hair of Death (1964), Night Child (1975), Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), Planet of the Vampires (1965), Psycho (1960), She (1965), Shock (1977), Suspiria (1977), Thunderball (1965), The Toolbox Murders (1978), Torso (1973), The Whip and the Body (1963), Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key (1972)
Today we talk about moral panics. Specifically, the "Video Nasty" moral panic that happened in the UK in the early 1980s, and then again in the 1990s, when there was widespread fear that by kids watching horror movies with titles like Cannibal Holocaust, Flesh for Frankenstein, I Spit on Your Grave, and The Last House on the Left, they would literally be turned into rapists and killers. Was there any justification for this panic? Can hyper-violent or hyper-sexualized media in general erode the morality of children? It's another big hitter episode but not as we know it. Over the past year I have been putting this show together, knowing that time will be short for me come spooky season. So I compiled my favourite parts from the video nasty series of the top tier, successfully prosecuted films over on Patreon and have put them in order of my least favourite to the movie that I think is the best. All the nasties with a total of 19 guests, a silly amount of booze and the filthiest 39 movies that you ever would see.0.00 - Intro6.18 - Bay of Blood aka Death of the Twitch Nerve (w/ Marc Canale)57.24 - Blood Feast (w/ Graham Bywater)1.18.21 - Axe aka Lisa, Lisa (w/ Graham Bywater)1.43.14 - The Burning (w/ John Tantalon)2.25.32 - Expose aka The House on Straw Hill (w/ Bobb Bruno)Between the interview segments there are various clips from an incredibly important documentary which is actually an episode from the BBC series 'Open Space' in which the public made programmes under their own editorial control. It's an episode called 'Suitable for Viewing in the Home?' from 1984. This gives some detailed context to pretty much all the conversations for this episode.
"You are full of hot dogs and Cadillacs" This week we're covering some splatter films, starting with Mario Bava's giallo classic A Bay of Blood.

This week our trio discuss Mario Bava's A Bay of Blood. (Aka Ecologia del delitto, reazione a catena chain reaction, Carnage, Twitch of the Death Nerve and Blood Bath) Mario Bava is the granddaddy of modern Italian horror but doesn't seem to have the same cachet as a Fulci or Argento with horror fans but he sure did make some of the best Italian horror films of all time. A Bay of Blood sets up most of what would go on to be the Giallo genre. Cool deaths, unhinged plot, and groovy early 70s partying. What more can you ask of cinema? Friday May 13th 2022 is the only Friday the 13th we get this year, so a couple Jason movies had to be watched. It might be Saturday the 14th, but it's 2022 rules. Jason can own the weekend. There are no real rules. Past a certain point, the series gets ridiculous, so why not revisit Jason vs the Telekenetic girl in Friday the 13th Part 7: A New Blood. Mario Bava's A Bay of Blood paved the way for the franchise in many ways, and had some kills copied for Friday the 13th Part 2. This can be found streaming on Shudder, and should be watched by every fan of the franchise. It might not have Jason, but it does have that style. Regresando al Giallo italiano, en esta ocasión hablamos del clásico de Mario Bava Ecología del delitto o Bahía de Sangre. Una película bastante interesante con giros en la historia que hacen recordar a una película de detectives.

The coats are cruising across Mario Bava's 1971 giallo: "A Bay of Blood". Also known as: Ecology of Crime; Twitch of the Death Nerve; Carnage; Chain Reaction; and Blood Bath; this is by far Mario Bava's most gruesome film that the coats have encountered. What's more, this giallo is credited with being a major influence on the slasher sub-genre. With so many names and such a storied history will it raise the coats' eyebrows or will it sink to the bottom of the Bay? Happy Halloween! To celebrate the spookfest, our homework is the 1971 influential Italian (but English-speaking) horror film A Bay of Blood by Mario Bava. This movie notoriously was released under more titles than any movie - under Chain Reaction, Twitch of the Death Nerve, even Last House on the Left 2 (no connection to that franchise... at all). In honor of the many-named film, we have a trivia game for Crazy Horror Titles, specifically horror subtitles. > Direct podcast RSS feed: here! > Contact: email, Facebook (movies, TV, games), and Twitter! > Check out The Media By Us Facebook Page too! > Review us on iTunes, Google Play, or anywhere! What's that lurking in the shadows? It's a new episode of The Rad Carpet! Thom, Whalen, and CJ5K are back in grisly technicolor to wrap up their month on Italy's granddaddy of horror, Mario Bava, watching and discussing his hyper-stylish giallo trendsetter Blood and Black Lace as well as his extravagantly violent 70s proto-slasher Bay of Blood. After that, your blood-soaked Carpeteers wrap up a month of Italoshocks with another Wall to Wall Carpet segment, chatting more broadly about Bava's preoccupations as a director and his relationship to other prominent filmmakers in the genre. But first, it's a fresh round of “In or Out?”, with the fellas unfurling many a take on movie trailers, trailer culture, and simultaneous theater and VOD release. This episode is rated R--for Rad!
