Episode #20 - Can Dance Lead to a More Meaningful Life

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 8, 2020 16:35

Can dance lead to a more meaningful life? What if as dancers, dance educators and/or youth leaders, we use dance as the vehicle to create more meaning in life and make life more worthwhile - give it a deeper sense of purpose? I help others discover how to blend their call to help, support and create change around something their passionate about by bringing in dance, too. On today's podcast episode, I shared a well-known quote by Pope Francis that touches me on a soul level. As a deeply spiritual, non-religious person, this speaks to me in ways that I can't really express. However, I do my best to share my thoughts and feelings with you. Listen now. Pope Francis' quote:“Rivers do not drink their own water; trees do not eat their own fruit; the sun does not shine on itself and flowers do not spread their fragrance for themselves. Living for others is a rule of nature. We are born to help each other. No matter how difficult it is. Life is good when you are happy but much better when others are happy because of you. Let us remember that pain is a sign that we are alive, problems are a sign that we are strong and prayer is a sign that we are not alone. If we can acknowledge these truths and condition our hearts and minds, our lives will be more meaningful, different and worthwhile.” You can listen to the podcast almost anywhere you listen to podcasts. Not only will new movement and expression be felt and discovered by the dancer(s), but they will also learn how to share a message or feeling without using words.  Though I LOVE to speak and talk (just ask my hubby LOL), expressing one's self through movement is phenomenal and deeply powerful! Plus, the dancer can learn surprising things about themselves that they didn't realize before.----more----Listen to this podcast episode now. It's short and sweet - under 10 minutes.      To Julie Allen dance was building confidence in something she was passionate about. It was her self-expression. By the time she 10 years old, it was her everything. She spent more time upside down than right side up. She began with ballet and tap, but didn't really find her passion until she started doing gymnastics and jazz dance. She saw a movie about Nadia Comaneci and decided she wanted to do gymnastics. There was only one place in her town to do gymnastics - a small little dance studio with a wonderful teacher named Elain Grimm. However, today, she feels the same passion she did for dance in her work as an entrepreneur and Career and Life Coach. She feels the same freedom and self-expression. It fits into the pattern. She knows what it feels like to be free to get into a passionate flow and be consumed by a love of developing herself and training others to do the same. Gymnastics and dance was about developing and challenging herself and developing and training others. She's doing that with coaching and says it feels amazing. Her purpose is to help people find their true authentic self, to discover their passions and purpose so they can go after a dream they love. She believes no one should go through life without experiencing a passion, and dance is an awesome place to start. ----more----In this episode: >how a small town dance studio led her to confidence and dance becoming a core part of her being >free dancing opens you up to what comes next without being attached to the outcome >dance is a creative experiences and comes from your inner self >Julie's purpose ot help other find their purpose >she's deeply passionate about others finding their passion and living it >as a career and life coach she gets to help other people find their purpose and passion ----more----Listen now!Click here to learn more about Julie: www.thestorymakers.netStoryMakerU PodcastYoutube

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 14, 2020 14:41

It's Moves, Movies and Music Monday! Here's an overview of today's episode: >Music and dance are intricately intertwined. >We can dance without music and we can play music without dancing. However, the two are so tightly connected that your body actually picks up and keeps track of the rhythm. It keeps time and it makes you want to move. >Babies are known to react to music. Think about all those Youtube videos of babies and toddlers bouncing to the music or the ones where a particular song strikes a chord with a little one and they can’t get enough of it. We do the same thing. >I share what happened with my son at a dance competition when I was 8 1/2 months pregnant with him, sitting in the audience watching my students perform. Listen now. >Music is a method to communicate and express. It’s a way to honor others. It transports us to another place and time - whether it takes us back or moves us forward. >So how long have music and dance existed? Well, bone flutes have been discovered that have been carbon dated as far back as 40,000 years ago. They even play the pentatonic scale, which is the blues! Cave drawings have been discovered that depict people dancing from thousands and thousands and thousands of years ago. Therefore, it's almost safe to say that music and dancing have been around since the beginning. >Music and dance are two of the most profound experiences that pretty much anyone can relate to. >Not everyone can sit down and play a piano or pick up a guitar and make it sing, but ANYONE can dance. It doesn’t matter what you look like. It’s about letting go and moving your body. >Dance is often used as a celebration or a way to release stress, anger or sadness. >Research has shown that pleasurable music causes dopamine to be released in the body, which are basically “feel good” hormones. Then add dancing to that because dance releases endorphins in the body too that uplift your mood and oh boy….you can shift your mood dramatically. >Research continues on the effects of music on the brain and the body. Join us in the brand new Facebook Group - Dance It Change It. We don't choose dance.
