The 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal will always be remembered for the perfection of Nadia Comaneci; the golden smile from Sugar Ray Leonard; the perseverance of Bruce Jenner in the decathlon; the grace of hurdler extraordinaire Edwin Moses; and the youthful exuberance of 17-year old diver Jennifer Chandler in the 3M springboard. Two years earlier, Jenni was a 15-year old kid getting ready for those games and featured in article by Sports Illustrated. She was spending the summer with her family on their farm in a small town in Alabama... her two parents and her two sisters driving everywhere for competitions that were prepping Jenni for a shot at Gold. That hard work, determination, and sacrifice from the teenager and her "Gold Medal Driver" mother put the young girl in a position to make the U.S. diving team and once she did that, her coach, Carlos de Cubas, had her ready to reach her potential when it mattered most. 50 years after that precocious 15-year old was featured in SI we talk with the Gold Medalist about how that moment shaped the rest of her life... what it was like to be a part of the Opening Ceremonies... how hearing the National Anthem still moves her to tears and how she looks back on a time in her life when for one brief moment... she was the best in the world... Jennifer Chandler, the last U.S. woman to win Olympic Gold in the 3M diving event, is engaging, thoughtful and grateful for what diving did for her and she shares her story on the Past Our Prime podcast. "The abuse is in plain sight, it's not been totally unknown to the general public, Nadia Comaneci had to escape from Romania and go to America."
You can do it! Chalk up your hands and skip lunch—we're taking it to the mat with Romanian gymnastics legend Nadia Comaneci, and her weirdly tense memoir "Letters to a Young Gymnast." The first person to ever receive a perfect 10 at the Olympics (Montreal, 1976), the blonde bombshell ever so slightly opens up about getting groomed by infamous coaching couple the Karolyis (who went on to invent Mary Lou Retton, Kerri Strug, and Simone Biles). From eating disorders to escaping communism, why the balance beam is for weird girls, jealous parental sex, will gymnastics ever see a trans girl champion?, Times Square shopping sprees and why lesbians aren't gymansts—this one's a perfect 10. THE NADIA MOVIE Lies, lies, and more lies! For today's commissioned episode, we watched the 1984 made-for-TV movie Nadia, a Very Highly Extremely Unauthorized biography of Nadia Comaneci, and we seriously just can't with it. We discuss: Things that definitely 100% happened and aren't lies at all, like Bela Karolyi creepily discovering Nadia at recess The villain of this tale: Communism The very important *IMMEDIATE CHOREOGRAPHED FRIENDSHIP DANCE* between Nadia and Teodora Interrupting the judges in the middle of Tourischeva's floor routine (!) Anachronistic hair: A deep discussion Marcia Frederick's stunts are the only watchable part The first double pike beam dismount ever competed? Maria Filatova (USSR) 1977 This movie did Teodora Ungureanu dirty Is this the only gymnastics movie where the stunt work is harder than the real routines they're portraying? Wait...did they turn Nellie Kim white? Creating the future: Did Bela reenact some of these scenes later in his career? Some very sensitive and thoughtful treatment of weight and suicide. Healthy and helpful. Good good. The moral of the story might be anorexia JOIN CLUB GYM NERD Join Club Gym Nerd for access to Behind the Scenes episodes. Buy our awesome clothing and gifts here. They discuss: What the secret police did and whether their reports can be trusted as reliable primary sources The sheer extent and complexity of the surveillance project of Nadia How many people tried to sound the alarm about the Karolyis in the 1970s Would anything have changed if this had been public knowledge? Plus, transcripts from the actual files about the Karolyis from 1976, detailing physical and verbal abuse, an "atmosphere of terror," and the insistence on ignoring physicians and experts.

Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
