Read the blog post Why Community MattersListen to the podcast episode The Importance of Community - a conversation with Mike RitterSome studies show that people can live longer when they have strong social ties. When it comes to fat loss and getting into your healthiest body, community is essential. If you’re not building relationships with people who are supportive and uplifting, you won’t be successful in your health and wellness. You must connect with people who share your goals, support a positive mindset, and cheer you on.The FASTer Way provides these important elements by creating small, online, private communities lead by your coach and community managers. They make sure that everyone has a positive mindset; they encourage and provide accountability and daily support. Starting in a small group, you have your questions answered, your concerns addressed, and your victories, however small, celebrated, and perhaps most importantly, your hard work validated. When you start the program, you will weigh yourself; then you will never have to weigh yourself again! On the FASTer Way, the focus is fat loss, not weight loss. Your measurement of success is not a number on the scale. Rather, it’s how you look, how you feel, how your clothes fit (or don’t because you’re shrinking!), and how you’re moving forward. This is the mindset of progress over perfection. We set realistic goals and celebrate when we meet them. Meeting goals, like eating enough carbs or drinking a certain amount of water, are what we call non-scale victories. These victories away from the scale are important because they are powerful. They are the victories that matter because they create optimism and help propel us forward. They are the victories we highlight in this podcast. Life is a marathon, not a sprint. The FASTer Way is there for your long journey not just with nutrition and workouts, but also with a supportive community and a positive mindset.People come to the FASTer Way for the promise of fat loss, but they stay for community. Certified coaches and community managers encourage and provide accountability and daily support and make sure that everyone has a positive mindset within your small group. This helps you shift away from all the negative thoughts that constantly surround you by recounting all your victories – and not relying on the scale. Step by step, these important non-scale victories enforce the mindset of progress over perfection.Be sure to download your FREE FASTer Way to Fat Loss Guide that breaks down intermittent fasting and provides meal plans and recipes!Topics discussed:Virtual communityAccountabilityThe “Secret Language”Women supporting womenInvitation to educationEating enough is the first stepNo end to this journey; always moving forwardPeaks & valleys; you’re never aloneListen to your own bodyWhat is your measurement of success? The “whys” changeNon-scale victoriesProgress over perfection
In this episode, FASTer Way to Fat Loss certified coach, Le Bergin, addresses two important topics most weight loss programs don’t: the importance of rest and the effect diet has on stress hormones. That’s because listening to your body and focusing on whole food nutrition brings about the best results.Rest is vital, whether it’s getting a good night’s sleep, or digestive rest through intermittent fasting, or physically resting between workout intervals. And the FASTer Way is probably the first fat loss program where you are told that rest is one of the most important components. We’ve talked about digestive rest in Episode 03 on intermittent fasting, but on the FASTer Way, we also program in rest from the workouts. So, two days a week we instead enjoy relaxing and restorative activities, like yoga or an outdoor walk. This time is built into the weekly schedule to help you take care of yourself. Because stress can affect your hormones, and therefore your weight, we take steps to recognize and reduce stress. Remember, the goal of the FASTer Way is to find a sustainable healthstyle, and rest is a critical component. Rest and hormones go hand in hand, because stress may put a strain on your adrenal and thyroid glands and prevent your body from burning fat.Decreasing the stress in your life and getting more sleep isn’t always convenient or easy. But you’ll never hit your goals if you don’t put yourself first.Speaking of a good night’s sleep: Do you know how much sleep you need? Or do you want to get better sleep? I recently listened to a podcast by Dr. Stephen Cabral where he addressed those issues and more. I found it interesting and helpful, and you might, too. If you have a FASTer Way to Fat Loss Success Story, and you want to share it on this podcast, email me FatLossSuccessStories@gmail.com.Be sure to download your FREE introductory guide to maximize your fat loss with meal plans and recipes so you can start eating real food!Other topics touched on in this episode:Hydration
In this episode with FASTer Way to Fat Loss certified coach, Le Bergin, we discuss the workouts that are strategically and uniquely paired with our nutritional intake. Basically, on low-carb days, we do high-intensity interval training, and the important weight training workouts are done on days we consume carbohydrates. Speaking of carbs, be sure to listen to the end of this episode to learn about the donut!
Carbohydrates have gotten a bad rap. But here’s the good news: we need carbs! The human body needs carbohydrates for energy. And we can consume them strategically to help the body burn fat. That’s called carb cycling, the topic of this episode and discussion with FASTer Way to Fat Loss certified coach Le Bergin. Carbohydrates have been scorned by low-carb diets like Atkins and the South Beach Diet and most recently the Keto diet. These diets are geared to help people who have a significant amount of weight to lose and are very sedentary. Keto, for example, can help you lose weight fast so you can move more easily. But these diets are not sustainable. We need carbohydrates for energy. That is why on the FASTer Way we embrace whole-food-based carbohydrates -- then use them strategically.Long-term restriction of carbohydrates and calories can lower your metabolic rate, (your metabolism), and negatively affect your hormone levels. This is why some people reach a weight loss plateau. For a short period of time, a scientifically restrictive diet will bring you results, however, over time it will cause your metabolic rate to decrease. We track macros to ensure we are getting enough of the right nutrients we need in the right ratios so we can burn fat and build muscle. And for some people, who have been dieting and depriving themselves of these nutrients, eating more food than usual can be a challenge. That is why is it important to focus on whole food nutrition. Throughout the week, most days you will be consuming mostly carbohydrates; other days carbohydrates are limited. This is carb cycling.Carb cycling is an intentional variation of carbohydrate intake. On the FASTer Way, we restrict carbs on a weekly cycle – just two days a week for women, and three days a week for men -- and increase fat intake. These low carb days are paired with higher intensity interval training. This, combined with intermittent fasting, gives impressive results. Very impressive resultsHow?Your body naturally stores excess fat and stores excess carbohydrates as glycogen and then breaks down the fat and glycogen to fuel your work. Carb cycling mimics this natural cycle and helps encourage the body to break down its fat stores into usable ketone bodies, which are water-soluble molecules, and to deplete your body’s glycogen stores. Carb cycling, when combined with other scientifically proven methods such as intermittent fasting and strategic workouts, provides a realistic healthy lifestyle that leads to sustainable fat loss, muscle strength, and overall well-being. And, it’s an easy strategy to implement.FASTer Way to Fat Loss puts it all together in a 6-week online starter program. Working in a small group, with your own certified coach, you will learn and implement the strategies that will lead to a healthier lifestyle. Go to our web site, FatLossSuccessStories.com, to sign up for the next Starter Program. There you also can access more episodes and even download a starter kit with meal plans and recipes to help you on the road to fat loss and a healthier lifestyle so you can write your own Fat Loss Success Story. Also discussed in this episode...When to work outWhen and how to work in “treats”Getting in your macrosBalancing your macros
Most diets focus on counting and cutting calories. But not all calories are equal. Two hundred calories of spinach have much more nutrition than 200 calories of gummy bears. That’s because the body needs to expend more energy (burn more calories) to break down the sugar and carbohydrates in the gummy bears. Macronutrients are those nutrients required in large amounts that provide the energy needed to maintain body functions and carry out the activities of daily life. There are three macronutrients (or macros): carbohydrates, fat, and protein. (sciencelearn.org.nz) And all are needed, in the proper ratios. On the FASTer Way, you don’t cut out an entire macronutrient, like going zero-carb or low-fat. Instead, the correct macro profile is created for you so that you eat enough of the right macros to function optimally.Carbohydrates are an important macro because they are the body’s primary (and preferred) fuel source. But, like calories, not all carbs are equal. The complex carbs found in beans, sweet potatoes, and rice are digested more slowly than simple carbs like those in breads, sugar-sweetened drinks, and many processed foods. So not only are you getting more nutrition when eating complex carbs, you also feel fuller and more satisfied.Same thing with fats: some are better than others. Fat is a fantastic form of fuel. Your body uses fat for protection and as a storage facility for vitamins and minerals. The FASTer Way emphasizes good fats, like those found in nuts and nut butters and coconut and avocado oils. Protein is an essential part of the human diet. It makes up the building blocks of organs, muscles, skin, hormones and pretty much everything that matters in your body. Protein is found in a large variety of foods, including eggs, seafood, legumes, meats, nuts, and seeds. Regardless of the source, the protein that we eat gets broken down and re-formed into new proteins in our bodies. These proteins do everything from fighting infections to building and repairing tissues. We need protein to build muscle.Identifying how many macros to consume is based on where you are and where you want to go. Your FASTer Way coach will help you determine the right macros for you and, if needed, adjust them as you progress. Tracking macros is much more beneficial than tracking calories. The free online app used on the FASTer Way to Fat Loss is called My Fitness Pal (Android and iPhone) and can be downloaded to your mobile device. The FASTer Way to Fat Loss program combines macro tracking with other scientifically proven strategies to provide a plan that will lead you to fat loss and a healthier lifestyle. Fasting is one of the biggest weight-loss trends to arise in recent years. Yet it’s not a fad. New research is showing the profound benefits of eating only during limited hours. In this episode, I chat with FASTer Way to Fat Loss certified coach... Le Bergin …about a proven strategy to fat loss called intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting is restricting the amount of time you eat into a compressed window of time to allow your digestive system to rest when you are not eating. Basically, you eat the same amount of food every day, just in a shorter time.Intermittent fasting encourages the body to burn fat while maintaining lean muscle mass, but because you’re mixing higher calorie consumption with lower calorie consumption periods, you don’t get as hungry as when you’re not eating. Unlike restricting calories, intermittent fasting does NOT lower the body’s basal metabolic rate long-term; in fact, it increases it! This makes intermittent fasting an incredibly effective weight loss strategy, even for obese people. Studies show IF to be more effective for weight loss than calorie restriction. Not only that, intermittent fasting is better at helping people maintain lean muscle mass than diets that simply restrict calories. Here’s why it works. After you eat, your body works hard to digest your meal. As you break down your meal in your digestive tract, nutrients are released into your bloodstream. That means your body often has excess fuel and that excess gets stored as fat. When you fast, your body has to rely on its energy stores by burning fat and glycogen, which is stored excess carbohydrates. So, through intermittent fasting, you train your body to burn fat instead of storing it.There are several different intermittent fasting protocols, however, the method recommended on the FASTer Way is the daily 16/8 method. This protocol calls for 16 hours of fasting per day, with an 8-hour eating window. For example, stop eating by 8:00 at night. Go to sleep and avoid consuming any calories – so you can have water, black coffee, herbal tea – until noon the next day, then be sure to eat a balanced meal full of whole foods. If waiting until lunch is too difficult, that’s fine. Start eating at 10 am, then keep moving it back until you’ve reached a 16-hour fasting window. The FASTer Way to Fat Loss program combines intermittent fasting with other scientifically proven strategies to provide a plan that will lead you to fat loss and a healthier lifestyle. On the FASTer Way, we focus on clean eating...avoiding foods that are processed and packaged. We reduce inflammatory foods like dairy and gluten, and foods that don't make us feel good. Instead, we focus on foods that promote your best health. When you’re eating whole foods, you’re eating real food. The bulk of your nutrition should consist of foods found in their most natural state. Think about fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, nuts, and whole grains.Whole foods have few ingredients. They are easy to pronounce, and they have not been modified or processed. They have no added sugars or chemicals. To help you when shopping in the grocery store, stick to the items on the outside perimeter of the store, like the produce section. Avoid the center sections of the grocery store, like the cereal and soda aisles. Be wary of food that comes in a box or a bag. It likely is processed and filled with hard-to-pronounce chemicals and additives like refined sugar.Whole foods provide more fiber and important micronutrients, like vitamins and minerals, that are good for our bodies. To tell us more about the importance of whole food nutrition is Le Bergin, a FASTer Way to Fat Loss certified coach.A fitness professional since 2004, Le and her husband own and operate a fitness center in Galveston, Texas.
