Releasing Trauma for Optimal Health With Dr. Aimie Apigian

We talk a lot about how trauma affects our mental health, but have you thought about what it does to your body? In this episode, host Paula Felps sits down with Dr. Aimie Apigian, author of The Biology of Trauma, to explore how trauma is stored not just in our minds but in our bodies — and how that impacts our physical health, relationships, and overall well-being. Drawing from her experience as a physician and foster parent, Dr. Aimie shares how traditional talk therapy often misses the mark, and why understanding trauma as a biological process opens the door to more effective healing. In this episode, you'll learn: How trauma differs from stress — and why trauma, not stress, is what makes us sick. Why stored trauma shows up in physical symptoms, emotional patterns, and relationship dynamics. How somatic self-practices can help shift your nervous system and begin healing —even when energy is low.

Nutrients are far more than supplements on a shelf—they are life-sustaining molecules that determine how well the body ages and resists disease. For years, their importance was overlooked because many studies were poorly designed, failing to consider existing nutrient levels or how vitamins and minerals work together. Strong evidence now shows multivitamins can slow brain aging, omega-3s can extend life expectancy, and shortages of vitamin D, magnesium, and B12 are widespread drivers of inflammation and chronic illness. Knowing and addressing individual deficiencies is critical, as these nutrients power billions of chemical reactions every second and are foundational to vitality and longevity. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Rhonda Patrick and Steve Martocci, why nutrients are essential for a healthy body and how to choose the highest quality supplements. Dr. Rhonda Patrick is a scientist and health educator recognized for her leadership in aging and disease prevention. As the founder of FoundMyFitness, she provides evidence-based insights to a global audience through her website and podcast. On YouTube, she engages millions in in-depth discussions on evidence-based strategies for well-being. Dr. Patrick's focus areas include genetic influences in dietary response, micronutrients, sleep, non-pharmacological approaches to mental well-being, and the surprising and paradoxical benefits of biological stressors such as exercise, heat, cold exposure, and plant phytochemicals. As an associate scientist and board member at the Fatty Acid Research Institute, she advances understanding of omega-3 fatty acids in aging and health. Her research has been published in high-impact journals like Nature Cell Biology, Experimental Gerontology, and FASEB. Steve Martocci is the co-founder and CEO of Suppco, a smart supplement tracking platform helping people take the right supplements with confidence. After years of struggling with his health and hitting 300 pounds, Steve turned to functional medicine and supplements to reclaim his well-being. That personal transformation—and the confusion he faced along the way—inspired him to build Suppco. Are you familiar with the power of positive affirmations? Do you believe that your mind plays a role in healing? Today's guest fully believes in the power of the mind and what an incredible honor it is to have on the show mega-bestselling author of “You Can Heal Your Life” Louise Hay. She is also the founder of the world's largest self-help publishing company, Hay House.  Today she's talking with Lisa about the movie “You Can Heal Your Life” which contains hours of footage and plenty of positive affirmations that you, too, can use to heal your life.    Louise discusses her journey with cancer and how she took a positive approach to turn toward optimal health. She made the decision that she would heal her life. She brought together people who were all able to help including nutritionists, teachers, and others. After six months, the medical community declared her cancer-free. Her diet and affirmations were so important, but most importantly Louise says she learned to forgive. After a very challenging childhood filled with abuse, she knew she was carrying resentment and knew she needed to release it. She looked into the childhoods of her parents and realized they both came from very difficult places and passed along what they learned. This was the key to forgiving them both. She talks about affirmations which heal including, “All is well”; “Only good will come of this”; “Everything is working out for my highest good”;  and “I am safe.” This is Part 1 of the conversation, and we air this in her honor. Louise Hay made her transition on Aug 31, 2017, at the age of 90. Info: HayHouse.com and LouiseHay.com.

What you know about fasting might be wrong! Or, at least, inaccurate. You might believe a 16-hour fast unlocks those deep, cellular-level benefits. As it turns out, that's not actually how your body works. That layer of metabolic magic happens in longer fasts, but most people never get there. However, there's a way to get many of the benefits without being hungry! In this episode, Dr. Chris Rhodes, a nutritional biochemist known for his research into fasting, nutrition, and longevity, unpacks why the typical 16-hour fast doesn't quite reach the deeper benefits like autophagy or a metabolic reset, and how to achieve it with less effort.  Listen now and start fasting towards health! Have you ever considered dry fasting for five days to regenerate your body, or using a pendulum to shift energy and reduce pain? I'm sharing some wild ideas today. I talked with Sean McCormick, host of the Optimal Performance podcast and a human guinea pig for health experiments. We discussed the kettlebell mile, a test of strength and endurance, and how grip strength predicts longevity. Sean shared insights on nicotine as a neuroprotectant and its effects. We explored the deep benefits of dry fasting, including muscle preservation and fat loss. Sean also described using a pendulum to harmonize energy and reduce pain. He shared his experiences with mini-dosing LSD for creativity and focus. I learned about the importance of N of one experiments for personal health journeys. Key takeaways Grip strength is an indicator of longevity, and tests like the kettlebell mile assess both strength and aerobic capacity. A dopamine detox protocol can help reset your body and mental clarity. Dry fasting for multiple days (without food or water) can regenerate the body on a cellular level, preserve muscle, and lead to significant fat loss, reaching deep ketosis and stem cell activation. Nicotine has potential benefits as a neuroprotectant, nootropic, and may offer anti-bacterial or anti-parasitic properties, but it can be addictive and is a vasoconstrictor. Oral TRT offers a different approach to testosterone replacement by providing mini-doses that may not hijack natural production. Herbal supplements, like dried ants, are used in traditional practices for physical strength. Pendulums made of magnetic metals can be used in energy medicine to harmonize energetic points, transmute negative energies, and potentially reduce pain. Microdosing or mini-dosing psychedelics like LSD or psilocybin can enhance creativity, focus, and offer anti-inflammatory effects, and can improve cognition. Conducting "N of one" experiments is a critical and fun way to learn about your own body's response to different health and fitness protocols. We often experience or hear about eating disorders. We talk about them--often behind closed doors--as if they're something to be ashamed of and ignored. Yet eating disorders--like all mental issues--are complex, highly challenging, and often resistant to change. They deserve our attention. And for anyone who's been mired in an eating disorder or has had a friend or family member struggle with this issue you know how devastating they can be. And in every case I've seen, the road to recovery is not a straight trajectory--it's a wobbly path filled with hurdles, small steps forward, and plenty of slips along the way. Yet, with perseverance and support, people may ultimately recover from--or at least get a good handle on--this serious issue that significantly impacts both mental and physical health. Dr. Carla Manly is joined by author, journalist, and assistant professor Mallary Tenore Tarpley, who offers a groundbreaking paradigm to help those living with--and recovering from--eating disorders. Did you know that my first dissertation topic “failed”?I wanted to take people with cancer to the root cause of it. But had to quickly realize that the big C already means a death sentence - for doctors who then tell their patients - even though there have been so many stories of remissions. But not in people's minds. And because of that, I would have to do SO MUCH WORK with people to fight the thought of “I have the big C, I'm gonna die anyway.” It didn't make sense. To show people that they can fight chronic conditions, ailments, and diseases with their mind, I had to start with something more tangible, something that would yield great results within 1-3 sessions, so I could actually turn this into a case study. All of this and more, I packed into my new podcast episode (haven't uploaded one in forever). Here are the resources I mentioned: https://universityofmetaphysics.com/Book list: Hay, Louise. What if everything you've been told about healthcare is backward? Dr. Leland Stillman joins Scott Ford to reveal how modern medicine has become an ascension marketing model – starting with inexpensive prescriptions before gradually escalating to costly procedures, all while failing to address the foundations of true health. For busy professionals and entrepreneurs, this broken system presents unique challenges. When you're juggling responsibilities and operating on tight schedules, you need healthcare that respects your time while addressing root causes, not just symptoms. Dr. Stillman shares his revolutionary approach to simplifying complex health information while maintaining a comprehensive perspective – what he calls focusing on the "low-hanging fruit" before pursuing specialized interventions. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when exploring the critical importance of light exposure. As humans evolved under natural sunlight, our bodies depend on specific light frequencies found in sunshine. Modern artificial lighting lacks the beneficial infrared spectrum present in natural light, correlating with increasing rates of chronic diseases. Contrary to popular belief, appropriate sun exposure actually associates with lower mortality rates across numerous studies. For those seeking optimal health, Dr. Stillman recommends three fundamental areas: working with a qualified provider who monitors key biomarkers (including hemoglobin A1C, ferritin, DHEA, CRP, vitamin D, and omega-3 levels), getting adequate natural light exposure, and ensuring proper darkness during sleep hours. These simple yet powerful approaches align with our biological rhythms and support cellular energy production, hormone regulation, and metabolic health. As Dr. Stillman powerfully states, "If you do not consciously make time for your wellness, you will be forced to make time for your illness." 81. 83. 49. 66. What do these figures have in common? They all relate to burnout--that sense of being utterly depleted, worn out, and chronically exhausted. Recent research shows that work burnout affects 81% of those between ages 18 - 24, 83% of those who are 25 - 34, and 49% of those over 55. When averaged, a whopping 66 percent of working adults report experiencing burnout. Even worse, these figures don't account for groups such as full-time (stay-at-home) parents, family caregivers, and undocumented workers who often experience significant levels of stress and burnout. And while there is no magic cure for burnout, there are steps we can take to minimize the stress and negative cycles that tend to feed the burnout phenomenon. “Let's stop ‘aging gracefully' and start aging strong”                                        -Dr. Alan Rozanski   In this powerful and practical conversation, Barbara is joined by Dr. Alan Rozanski, a nationally recognized expert in preventive cardiology, Professor of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and founder of one of the country's top cardiac rehabilitation programs. Together, they dive deep into what it really means to age better—and why strength may be the most overlooked key to thriving after 60.  Dr. Rozanski explains that aging doesn't happen in a straight line—it jumps, especially around age 60. That's when declines in muscle mass, mental sharpness, and energy can take a sharp turn. But it doesn't have to be that way.  Using his groundbreaking Six Domains of Optimal Health and Vitality framework, Dr. Rozanski shares science-backed, actionable strategies for building physical strength, cultivating mental vitality, managing stress, deepening purpose, and fostering emotional resilience and social connection.  Whether you're in midlife or well beyond, this episode offers a roadmap for becoming not just older—but stronger, sharper, and more alive. It is a true masterclass in aging better.   Key Takeaways:  Aging isn't linear—it accelerates at key moments, including around age 60.  Strength training is essential for preventing falls, frailty, and decline.  Resistance training should be included in standard medical guidelines.  Measuring muscle strength can be as important as tracking blood pressure.  Daily physical activity can dramatically lower your risk of early death.  Living with purpose fuels vitality, energy, and emotional wellbeing.  Loneliness is a serious public health threat—but it can be reversed.  Emotional mastery helps you navigate challenges with resilience.  Stress, when managed well, can become a force for growth.  Small steps—like a few bodyweight squats a day—can change your trajectory.  Learn more about Dr. Alan Rozanski HERE  Learn more about Barbara Hannah Grufferman HERE  FOLLOW ‘AGE BETTER':   To join this adventure, remember to subscribe or follow the "Age Better with Barbara Hannah Grufferman" podcast on platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube. While public interest in the unexplained continues to grow and topics like cryptozoology and UFOs become more mainstream, some phenomena still remain too unsettling to discuss openly. Among these are the chilling encounters with cloaked or invisible entities, shadowy beings whose presence is felt more often than openly reported. Countless eyewitnesses have described terrifying experiences of unseen figures seemingly watching, stalking, or hunting them. But what are these hidden predators, and why do their victims feel such profound dread? In this episode, we examine some of the most bizarre and unsettling encounters with these “Glimmer Intruders.” From hunters stalked by shimmering humanoids in the woods to homeowners confronting phantom intruders, we explore cases that challenge our understanding of reality itself. We discuss strange sightings that resemble the cloaking technology portrayed in the iconic film “Predator,” yet predate its release by decades, including unnerving personal accounts from across the globe. Then, for our Plus+ members, we step into the realm of energy healing and bodily mysteries. We investigate wild reports from energy medicine pioneer Donna Eden, including cases of bi-location during severe PMS episodes, phantom limbs possessing ESP-like awareness, and bizarre energy disruptions during deep meditative states. These accounts reveal the extraordinary abilities of the human body and mind, abilities science has yet to fully understand.
