Welcome to Episode 22 of "Optimal - the Podcast," where we delve into the facets of health that truly make a difference. In this insightful episode, we're honored to host Lindsay Goddard to discuss the Organic Acids Test from Mosaic Diagnostic, formerly Great Plains Laboratory. Lindsay Goddard is a Registered and Licensed Dietitian (RD, LD/N), with a Master's in Nutrition, and a Bachelor's in Biology with a concentration in Human Physiology and Ecology. She has additional training in Integrative and Functional Nutrition and is currently finishing a Graduate Certificate in Toxicology from the University of South Florida. Lindsay began her career as a dietitian by working in one of the largest hospitals in Florida specializing in recovery nutrition, and critical care. She went on to serve in University-based outpatient clinics with concentrations in gastroenterology, genetics, and oncology. She followed with working in the NICU and Pediatrics in a level II facility until she began educating and advising on functional medicine testing. She has spoken on various platforms nationally, and internationally, on metabolomics, immunology, and toxicology, educating providers on its relevance and utility. She now serves as a Medical Science Liaison on Fullscript's Integrative Medical Advisory team along with running a successful private practice where she specializes in pediatrics, and GI disorders as well as working in a physiatry clinic focusing on nutrition management for brain and spinal cord injuries. During our conversation, Lindsay sheds light on the Organic Acid Test (OAT) and its critical role in achieving optimal health. OAT is a sophisticated laboratory analysis that scrutinizes cellular metabolic waste to identify nutrient deficiencies, signs of inflammation, toxic exposures, and microbial imbalances. Lindsay elaborates on how organic acids, the metabolic byproducts from humans, bacteria, and fungi, are integral to understanding our body's metabolic processes. The OAT offers a window into the body's use of nutrients and exposes metabolic functions that might be contributing to health issues, aiming to pinpoint deficiencies, inflammatory processes, toxicity, and dysbiosis. Further exploring the practical applications of OAT, Lindsay discusses the frequency of testing in relation to specific deficiencies and how it complements other tests, such as CBC, CMP, and stool analyses. She also delves into the assessment of oxidative stress and detoxification markers, and the examination of intestinal microbial overgrowth, breaking it down to its yeast, fungal, and bacterial constituents. A fascinating part of our discussion highlights the relationship between clostridia bacterial markers and dopamine regulation, suggesting possible psychiatric implications. Lindsay doesn't shy away from complex topics such as cellular turnover, DNA synthesis, folate metabolism, ketone levels as an indication of blood sugar regulation, and the nuances of fatty acid oxidation—vital considerations for those on low-carb diets and how these reflect on carnitine and riboflavin requirements, as well as pattern recognition. Beyond individual biomarkers, Lindsay emphasizes the importance of pattern recognition in the understanding of human physiology and metabolism. She also clarifies how creatinine levels are used to normalize metabolic markers in urine samples. Addressing deficiencies, she underlines the role of a balanced diet and effective stress management in maintaining one's health. Join us to uncover the vital insights and practical applications of the Organic Acid Test and empower yourself with the knowledge to understand and address bodily deficiencies for improved health. Episode Highlights: (00:52) Introduction of Lindsay Goddard (6:02) Definition of Organic Acid Test (8:07) Explains how Organic Acid Test work and the suggested time gap of re-testing (11:31) Other laboratory procedures that needed to justify the results of OAT and what categories can be seen in the result (24:16) How to determine what kind of follow-up test a patient would need (37:14) How to explain OAT results, importance of clinical history and retesting, and OAT practice (47:22) Explains how to utilize OAT by medical practitioners and Awareness on the importance of the test (51:52) Importance of spreading awareness about the OAT and educating practitioners Where to Reach Dr. Dicken Weatherby Dicken Weatherby LinkedIn Optimal DX Resource Center Optimal DX Blog Where to Reach Lindsay Goddard Lindsay Goddard LinkedIn Lindsay's Website Where to Reach Beth Ellen DiLuglio Nutrition Mission Beth Ellen DiLuglio LinkedIn  Did you find today's episode helpful? Episode Summary: According to Cancer Research UK, this works because, “as the blood circulates around the body, fluid leaks out from the blood vessels unto the body tissues. This fluid carries food to the cells and bathes the body tissues to form tissue fluid. The fluid then collects waste products, bacteria, and damaged cells, as well as any cancer cells if present. This fluid then drains into the lymph system. The lymph then flows through the lymph vessels into the lymph glands, which filter out any bacteria and damaged cells.” Once filtered, the lymph leaves the glands and moves into larger lymphatic vessels to the thoracic duct at the base of the neck. Podcast Show Notes About Dr. Cate: Dr. Cate Shanahan, MD, is a renowned physician, best-selling author, and a leading authority in the field of nutrition and wellness. With a trailblazing approach, she challenges conventional nutrition science, advocating for the benefits of traditional fats, meats, and produce while cautioning against the adverse effects of seed oils. Dr. Cate's work has transformed wellness wisdom, helping people overcome biology-driven cravings and embrace ancestral diets for optimal health. Through influential books and extensive expertise, she dispels myths, reveals conflicts of interest in nutrition science, and empowers individuals to make informed choices for their well-being. Dr. Cate Shanahan is a driving force behind the health and nutrition movements, sparking new product trends and teaching millions the merits of traditional diets. Introduction: In this episode, we dive deep into the world of nutrition and the often-overlooked impact of vegetable seed oils with Dr. Kate Shanahan. Dr. Cate Shanahan is a family physician, biochemist, and author of "Deep Nutrition" and "The Fatburn Fix," with her upcoming book, "Dark Calories." She specializes in nutrition and its profound effects on health. Key Takeaways: 1. Vegetable Seed Oils vs. Ancestral Diet Dr. Cate Shanahan shares her journey and experiences living in Hawaii, where she discovered the impact of vegetable seed oils on health. She emphasizes how these oils were celebrated and woven into the local culture, making it essential to understand their effect on our health. 2. The Role of Oxidative Stress Dr. Cate explains that oxidative stress, rather than the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, is the primary mechanism behind the harm of vegetable seed oils. She debunks the common misconception that all omega-6 fats are harmful, highlighting the importance of understanding the chemistry behind it. 3. Processed and Refined Oils The refined nature of vegetable seed oils strips away antioxidants and nutrients, leaving only the unstable polyunsaturated fatty acids. These oils not only require more antioxidants for digestion but also lack the protective nutrients, leading to oxidative stress within our cells. 4. Practical Changes Dr. Cate emphasizes that adopting a more ancestral diet doesn't have to be overly complicated. Simple changes in daily meals can lead to significant health improvements. While more complex diets have their place, even small adjustments can have a positive impact on health. 5. Upcoming Book: "Dark Calories" Dr. Cate Shanahan's new book, "Dark Calories," is available for pre-order and offers a broader perspective on the impact of vegetable seed oils and cholesterol. Conclusion: Dr. Cate Shanahan's insights shed light on the importance of understanding the chemistry behind nutrition, specifically in relation to vegetable seed oils. These often hidden and processed ingredients have a significant impact on our health, and simple dietary changes can lead to remarkable improvements. Outro: Thank you for tuning in to this episode. Are you struggling with unhealthy habits? Do you feel like your life is often chaotic? Do you feel like you are heading toward the point of no return? Our guest today offers empowering advice to feel better and more in control. Chiropractic and holistic physician Dr. Darren Weissman helps people remember what we've been “programmed,” unconsciously, to forget. Dr. Darren is a visionary thinker and leading expert in consciousness. He is a world-renowned healer who developed the Lifeline Technique and can help us all uncover the unconscious patterns which may be running our lives.   On one level, the subconscious mind controls our beating hearts, the blinking of our eyes, and the protective patterns that keep our systems working. The subconscious mind protects us in the moment, but sometimes we get stuck in past negative emotions and feelings, which may result in health challenges and crises.  Dr. Darren has developed the Lifelife Technique flow chart that shows how systems work together including Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic medicine, applied kinesiology, color and sound therapy, and various healing modalities. He has taught this healing method throughout the world to thousands of people.   When memories are triggered, we don't even realize that it's a memory. Our systems keep track of these things, but the brain and the body don't realize that it is just a memory. They think it's real. Our bodies are naturally designed to heal, but why are we sometimes anxious, depressed, or sick? It may be because you are being driven by your much younger self, where pain may be stuck.   Dr. Darren explains how we can bridge the gap between the conscious and unconscious mind. The more disconnected you feel, the bigger the sign that you must “Wake Up.” Any trauma can be processed if we are open to it. It can be a doorway, and it's a step-by-step process using new integration of numerous modalities. This can change and activate the neuroplasticity and epigenetics of a person. All the types of holistic healing and science can come together, and Lifeline utilizes 16 different techniques running at the same time. We all have the ability to respond with Infinite Love and Gratitude!  With best-selling books such as “The Power of Infinite Love & Gratitude,” “Awakening to the Secret Code of Your Mind,” “The Heart of the Matter,” and his children's book, “The Daily Lessons of Infinite Love & Gratitude,” Dr. Darren's insightful writings have touched the lives of many seeking personal growth and healing. His contributions can also be found in Dr. Masaru Emoto's best-selling book, “The Healing Power of Water.”    In addition to his written works, Dr. Darren has appeared in films such as "E-Motion," "Making Mankind," "Beyond Belief," and the award-winning documentary "HEAL."  Through coaching, online courses, and certifications, Dr. Darren equips others with the tools and knowledge to facilitate profound shifts and lasting healing. With his expertise, guidance, and compassionate approach, he empowers individuals to embrace their true potential to awaken the dormant greatness within.    This is Part 1 of the interview. In this episode of the Balancing Chaos podcast, Kelley welcomes Dr. Stephen Cabral, an experienced naturopath, Ayurvedic, and functional medicine practitioner. Stephen Cabral developed his passion for health & wellness after going through severe health complications at the age of 17. He saw over 50 different doctors, tried over 100 different treatment protocols, but still saw no hope of recovery. It wasn't until he met an “alternative” health doctor who explained to him how he got here and how he could become well again, that he began his recovery process. It was at this young age that he knew his life would be dedicated to helping others rebalance their bodies and renew their health.  Dr. Cabral is the founder, creator and teacher of the Integrative Health Practitioner Institute. He is extremely passionate about sharing his wisdom and knowledge with the world so that he can help people to heal at a root cause level.Today Kelley and Dr. Cabral discusse the impact of stress on disease and emphasizes its role as the number one causal factor. He introduces the "distress protocol" which includes diet, exercise, stress reduction, toxin removal, rest, emotional balance, science-backed supplements, and a success mindset. Dr. Cabral explains how genetics and the environment contribute to disease, but it is the triggering event of stress that leads to diagnosis. Together they break down how stress can impact the thyroid and other hormones, understanding different methods of testing and why getting to the root cause is so important for healing, and together they review Kelley's results of her lab testing.
