“You can't be afraid to jump.” — Clay Novak "Let's get left of the boom. We should be doing the same thing for veteran suicide." This Veterans Day, join Reena Friedman Watts and her dad, Wayne, as they sit down with Lt. Col. Clay Novak (Ret.), combat veteran, author of the new book Rebellis, and co-host of The Elsa Kurt Show. Clay shares his hard-earned lessons on leadership, resilience, fatherhood, and life after combat — and weighs in on today's politics and world events. Elsa Kurt, known as The Blonde Kamala, a political commentator, co-host of the podcast, and married to a police officer and veteran. Together, they bring candid, no-holds-barred insights on freedom, service, and navigating the modern world. Clay shares his journey from military life to becoming a podcaster and author, revealing the lessons learned along the way. He discusses the challenges and camaraderie of military service, the stark contrasts between his experiences and those of veterans from previous generations, and how these insights inform his writing and advocacy work today. With humor and sincerity, Clay opens up about the realities of combat, the importance of community for veterans, and the critical issue of suicide prevention within the veteran population. He emphasizes the need for belonging and the role that camaraderie plays in helping veterans cope with life after service. As they explore Clay's creative endeavors, including his writing process and the inspiration behind his characters, Reena and Wayne engage in a heartfelt conversation that highlights the importance of mentorship, resilience, and the power of storytelling. This episode is not only a testament to the sacrifices made by those in uniform but also a celebration of the legacy they leave behind. Wycliffe Barsa is the co-founder and CEO of Kosi Africa, an ambassador for the Global Play Brigade, and a graduate of the East Side Institute's flagship program, the International Class. Here he shares his journey from living on the streets as a child to his work today promoting and transforming education in Kenya, and, in the process, developing young leaders as visionaries who will return to their communities to help them generate new possibilities. What makes Kosi different from most non-profits is, Barasa says, is sustainability. Instead of relying on outside money, when Kosi approaches a school, it does a Resource Audit, asking the school what sort of resources do you have and how can we work with you, the parents and the larger community, using those resources, to together solve these problems? “We're not there to help the community; we're there to work with the community,” he explains. Pointing out that in English “Kosi” means “Go” or “Keep Moving,” Barasa continues, “Development is how the whole community comes together to move and grow and create power.” https://kosiafrica.org/ ----more---- Welcome to All Power to the Developing, a podcast of the East Side Institute. The Institute is a center for social change efforts that reinitiate human and community development. We support, connect, and partner with committed and creative activists, scholars, artists, helpers, and healers all over the world. In 2003, Institute co-founders Lois Holzman and the late Fred Newman had a paper published with the title “All Power to the Developing.” This phrase captures how vital it is for all people—no matter their age, circumstance, status, race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation—to grow, develop and transform emotionally, socially and intellectually if we are to have a shot at creating something positive out of the intense crises we're all experiencing. We hope that this podcast series will show you that, far more than a slogan, “all power to the developing” is a loving activity, a pulsing heart in an all too cruel world. ----more---- The East Side Institute is a hub for a diverse and emergent community of social activists, thought leaders, and practitioners who are reigniting our human abilities to imagine, create and perform beyond ourselves—to develop. Commitment isn't starting strong—it's finishing well. In this powerful finale to the "Immeasurably More" vision series, Pastor Ryan reveals why the middle matters most and reminds us that a waiting season is not a wasted season. Whether you've been tempted to pump the brakes when things got hard, or you're standing on the edge of something that feels impossible—this message is packed with biblical truth, honest conviction, and the power of perseverance. The thing you fear the most might just become the path to what you've prayed for the most. When we lose our awe, we lose our way. Scripture Reference: Exodus 14:21-31, Psalm 128:1-2 Big Idea: When we lose our awe, we lose our way. Awe doesn't come when we're standing still—it's born in the middle of what feels impossible. Key Quote: "The thing that they feared the most just became the path to what they prayed for the most. Sometimes the things we think are going to drown us are the very things God uses to deliver us." ⸻ Topics in this Message: Why the middle matters: from what we can do to what only God can do How God builds faith before we have to step A waiting season is not a wasted season When faith and fear collide at the Red Sea The thing you fear most becomes the path to deliverance When we lose our awe, we lose our way Biblical prosperity: when everything in your life begins to thrive The pool story: when someone is drowning, jump in +++++++ Join us for church this Sunday. The White House press pool can't keep up with President Trump's grueling schedule. Politico's playbook shared how President Trump worked the entire time during 2 overnight flights to the middle east and back. The trip in which he visited Israel to speak in front of the Knesset as hostages were returned safely. Then, President Trump went to Egypt for the Middle East peace summit with world leaders from Europe and Arab countries. The president flew home to meet with Argentinian President Javier Milei, then awarded Charlie Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously. The reporters were both stunned and baffled on how the president worked so hard with days of no sleep. The Schumer shutdown continues and Democrats are losing the messaging war, badly. As they take to the streets this weekend for the "no kings" protests, republicans have been eager to open up the government. Maybe democrats will figure out what they want this weekend so they can stop keeping the American people hostage. The simplest advice often carries the most power: just keep moving. Show Notes: In this episode of Shark Theory, Baylor unpacks how a simple phrase from a training partner—“just keep moving”—has become a life philosophy. Whether in grueling Hyrox workouts, marathons, or the pursuit of personal and professional goals, momentum is built one step at a time. Baylor also highlights the trap of comparison. It may look like others are ahead or behind you, but the truth is, you're not in the same race—they started in different places, on different stations, with different circumstances. Wasting energy measuring yourself against others robs you of the energy you need to invest in yourself. As we approach the final stretch of the year, Baylor challenges you to stop waiting, stop comparing, and start moving—because momentum creates results, and results fuel motivation. What You'll Learn in This Episode: How to turn simple advice into applied life philosophy Why progress comes from consistent small steps, not giant leaps The danger of comparing your path to someone else's How to build self-motivation through action and momentum Why “forward is still a pace” is enough to change your trajectory Featured Quote: "If you move, you get momentum. If you get momentum, you start to see results. And results become your motivation."

Daily Boost Podcast Show Notes Friction Zone: How to Keep Moving When Life Gets Hard July 24, 2025 | Episode - 5144 Host: Scott Smith Episode Description Life's getting hard, and everybody's facing friction. Scott breaks down his unique "friction zone" concept using his motorcycle expertise to show you how to navigate challenges without burning out or giving up. When you've got big goals, friction is inevitable – but there's a technique to manage it. Scott shares how to balance your energy like managing throttle, brake, and clutch on a Harley, keeping you moving forward no matter how slow you need to go. This isn't about racing full-out until you crash; it's about staying in control and making steady progress. Featured Story Scott draws from his motorcycle riding experience to explain the friction zone – that sweet spot between racing full-throttle and stalling out completely. Just like on his Harley Street Glide, when you slow down without proper technique, you fall over. But master the friction zone, and you can navigate any challenge. He connects this to goal-setting, showing how people either burn out from going too fast or give up when they hit the brakes too hard. The magic happens in the middle, where you balance forward momentum with controlled stability. Important Points Friction is inevitable when you have big goals – you're going somewhere you've never been before, so expect to run into challenges that will mess with you. The biggest mistake is racing full-out until you panic and slam the brakes, causing you to fall over on your goals just like you would on a motorcycle. The solution lies in the friction zone technique: slow down a little, apply gentle brake pressure for stability, and work the clutch in the middle to maintain controlled forward progress. Memorable Quotes "My job is to take the friction away. When I meet people, I give them shortcuts to say, listen, you're doing it this way. Do this. Let's get around that friction." "You might be going one mile an hour, two mile an hour, three mile an hour. It doesn't matter. You're still going to get there." "If you set a big goal, you've never been there before. You're going to run into stuff that's going to muck with you and mess you up." Scott's Three-Step Approach Slow down your pace so you're not racing full-out, but don't take your hand completely off the throttle – maintain consistent, methodical progress toward your goal. Apply gentle pressure like a light brake to add stability and control, but never slam the brakes completely or you'll stall out and lose momentum. Work the middle ground by constantly adjusting your effort level – a little more, a little less – to keep moving forward without losing control or falling over. What is healthy and helpful self-reliance? I submit that few of us know and most of us are falling to one side or another of unhealth. On one side we exercise very little self-reliance, which means if we are not relying on self, we are relying on others. On the other side is an overabundance of self-reliance where we rely almost exclusively on ourselves and hardly at all on others. So is there a happy medium? Or are there some aspects of our lives where we should be super self-reliant and other areas where we should seek out help? This is why I brought on Maha Abouelenein, as her new book is titled, 7 Rules of Self-Reliance: How to Stay Low, Keep Moving, Invest in Yourself, and Own Your Future. Maha is a personal branding expert, CEO and founder of global communications consulting firm Digital and Savvy, and a best-selling author. She has a long, impressive pedigree of success in the corporate world in the Middle East and in America, but none of it is why I brought her on the show. Maha had a challenging upbringing that gave her every reason to be a victim and not practice self-reliance. And she's experienced the consequences of unhealthy self-reliance on both sides. My focus was taking on the topic of self-reliance to understand how we are doing it poorly, and how to do it with greater success.
