Could your sleepless nights, mood swings, joint pain, or "I just don't feel like myself" feelings be connected to perimenopause? Do you really need hormone testing to know what is happening? And is menopause hormone therapy actually as scary as we were once told? Dr. Rebecca Dunsmoor-Su and Dr. Amy Voedisch, hosts of OvaryActive and co-authors of Estrogen, Interrupted, join Dr. Lora Shahine for this episode of Brave & Curious. Their conversation opens up a thoughtful, funny, and myth-busting conversation about menopause, perimenopause, hormone health, and why women deserve to understand their bodies. They also explain the difference between menopause and perimenopause, why symptoms can start years before periods stop, why hormone labs often do not tell the full story, and how symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, anxiety, vaginal dryness, weight changes, itchy ears (yes, we said "itchy ears"), burning mouth, and joint pain can all fit into the bigger picture. Perimenopause is often a "story-based" diagnosis rather than a single lab result, and treatment options are available. This conversation will walk listeners through all of that and more. Listeners will feel informed, validated, and ready to ask better questions. Sent us text! We would love to hear from you! Episode 250 is a milestone — and Commander Drew and Dr. Paul mark it with a conversation that matters for everyone: the truth about midlife, hormonal change, and how to keep your body flying strong when your system gets a software update you didn't ask for. The show opens with a no-excuses fitness brief on the five areas that protect your health through midlife: resistance training, balance, mobility, cardio, and mindfulness. Whether it's menopause for women or the quiet decline men try to ignore, the message is the same—your airframe changed. Stop pretending you're 22 and fly what you've got with a plan that actually works. The Good News segment honors Mrs. Susan Young Browne — 108 years old, born in 1918, and still collecting reasons to keep going. She walked ten miles a day for school in a segregated system, taught for three decades, traveled the world in retirement, and recently had a governor show up to her birthday asking for life advice. Her story is a masterclass in purpose and movement. The Wingmen Longevity Quiz gives every listener an honest look at their long-range flight plan—five key areas: health, home, social connection, care readiness, and purpose. The questions are simple. The answers might sting. Either way, you leave knowing exactly what to fix. Jet Jolt pulls back the curtain on the night carrier landing—the maneuver most civilian pilots don't know exists and most Navy pilots never forget. No horizon, a pitching deck, a glowing meatball, and one shot to catch a wire. It's a controlled crash, and it's home. The Frequent Flow-Line brings a letter from Key Largo—a woman preparing for a family reunion with a narcissistic uncle, asking how to protect her peace and model strength for her young son without starting a war. Drew and Paul walk through grey-rock tactics, boundary language, and the ready-room standard for handling someone who mistakes control for leadership. The Gouge with Ace tackles EFOL Fact #6: the difference between healthy self-confidence and ego that quietly drives people away. And the Wingman story closes the show with Marcus—a man 47 years into bad habits and one early-morning text away from getting his life back.

Send us a text & leave your email address if you want a reply!Everything you have been told about menopause symptoms being normal and inevitable is incomplete, and Dr. Cari Schaefer is here to blow that wide open. In this episode, Leah and Dr. Willow sit down with their dear friend and functional medicine and Chinese medicine practitioner to draw a hard line between natural menopause and menopausal syndrome, unpack why hormone replacement therapy alone leaves a massive gap in your care, and get honest about the adrenal health, blood sugar regulation, and liver function conversations that should have happened years before your first hot flash. They also get into andropause, testosterone conversion in men, and why the most loving thing you can do for your body right now has nothing to do with hormones at all.KEY TAKEAWAYS:Menopause and menopausal syndrome are not the same thing, and confusing the two is exactly why so many women are still suffering after starting hormone therapy.Your adrenal glands become the primary producers of estrogen precursors after menopause, so chronic stress is not just emotional, it is hormonal.Hot flashes and night sweats are most often driven by hidden immune stressors like urinary infections and digestive imbalances, not declining hormones alone.A liver cleanse at least once a year is one of the most direct things you can do to keep hormones balanced, because your liver has to filter and process every hormone in your body.Men convert testosterone into estrogen or DHT under chronic stress, which explains low libido, weight gain, emotional flatness, and erectile changes far better than low testosterone alone.Shame around food creates more physiological stress on the liver and gallbladder than the food itself ever could.Menopause is not a biological mistake; it is a designed transition into the most powerful role of a woman's life, and the body will not let you access that role while it is running on empty.LINKS & RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE CAN BE FOUND ON THE WEBSITE: https://www.sexreimagined.com/blog/menopause-symptoms-root-cause ROOTED IN DESIRE. Take HRT, feel better. Done.Except... that's not the full story. And if you've tried hormone therapy and you're still flashing, or you're nowhere near menopause and already waking up drenched at 3am, or your hot flashes seem to have a mind of their own — you already know something's missing from that explanation. In this episode, I'm breaking down the six most common drivers of hot flashes that your doctor probably isn't connecting to your symptoms. Some of them have nothing to do with estrogen at all. And when you hear them, you might have one of those oh — that's me moments that finally makes sense of something you've been struggling with for months or years. Before we get into them, ask yourself:● Do your hot flashes tend to strike at a specific time of day — particularly in the early morning hours?● Are they worse on your most stressful or chaotic days?● Do you notice them after certain foods or drinks?● Are they worse in the week or two before your period?● Do you have digestive symptoms that seem to show up alongside them?Your answers are clues. And by the end of this episode, you'll know exactly what they're pointing to — and what to actually do about it.We're also covering a practical, prioritized toolkit organized by what gives the most relief, fastest — so you're not leaving with a list of 40 things to do. You're leaving with a starting point.

If you're a woman in your 30s, 40s, or 50s feeling like your body is betraying you, this episode reveals the hormonal, gut, and environmental triggers behind perimenopause that most doctors never address, and exactly what you can do about it. -Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey sits down with Cynthia Thurlow, a nurse practitioner, CEO and founder of the Everyday Wellness Project, and a globally recognized expert in intermittent fasting and women's hormonal health. Her TEDx talk on intermittent fasting has surpassed 10 million views, and she brings over 20 years of functional medicine clinical experience to one of the most underserved conversations in longevity and human performance. Together, they tear apart the outdated medical narrative around perimenopause and menopause, exposing how a lack of knowledge, not biology, is destroying relationships, careers, and quality of life for millions of women. Dave and Cynthia dig into the gut microbiome's role in every symptom women experience in midlife, the mold toxin that is 10,000 times more potent than human estrogen and directly linked to hormonal chaos, and why biohacking your hormones as early as 35 could be the most important longevity move a woman makes. They also cover why statins are wrecking women's metabolism, how trauma accelerates ovarian aging and mitochondrial decline, the surprising connection between histamine reactions and hot flashes, and why GLP-1 micro-dosing alongside hormone replacement therapy is a game-changer for body composition and anti-aging. This episode is essential for listening for anyone serious about biohacking, sleep optimization, functional medicine, longevity, brain optimization, supplements, metabolism, human performance, and smarter not harder approaches to women's health. You'll Learn: Why perimenopause actually begins around age 35 and what to do about it before symptoms hit How a mold-derived xenoestrogen found in conventional beef disrupts hormones at 10,000 times the potency of human estrogen The gut microbiome changes that drive hot flashes, brain fog, weight gain, and mood disorders in perimenopause Why oral micronized progesterone beats topical for sleep optimization and hormonal stability How testosterone drives executive function, motivation, and brain optimization in women The lab tests every woman in perimenopause should run, including fasting insulin, ApoB, ferritin, and a full thyroid panel Why adverse childhood events and unresolved trauma age the ovaries and tank mitochondria How mold toxicity and Lyme disease create a hormonal perfect storm that no amount of supplements will fix The real reason 70 percent of divorces are initiated by women, and what hormones have to do with it Thank you to our sponsors! - Neuronic | Go to www.neuronic.online Code DAVE for $100 off - Superstratum Labs | Get Dave's exact home mold detox kit and save 10% at superstratumlabs.com/products/dave - Joymode | Go to tryjoymode.com/DAVE Or enter DAVE at checkout for 20% off. - Viome | Check it out at viome.com and use code 10DAVE for 10% off. Our topic today - one of the biggest, most under-researched, underfunded areas in healthcare. This is a leadership conversation. A workplace conversation. And chances are… you have no idea what she's going through. Now it's time for you to step up. And that's the only way you are going to keep having this relationship. This conversation is in the first instance directed at all the men listening. Guys, in case you haven't yet… it's time you learnt all about this. You need to know, you must know, take note and act.And to all women who tune in, we hope you find the knowledge and experience shared here today helpful and empowering. Broadcast from KSQD, Santa Cruz on 4-02-2026: Dr. Dawn briefly responds to an emailer in Aptos, advising that her numbers don't require rushing into therapy but recommending a more thorough workup. An emailer asks about her sister's osteoporosis treatment, including Reclast side effects and vitamin D levels of 28. Dr. Dawn recommends raising vitamin D to around 50, adding vitamin K2 (MK7-9) and calcium, and suggests weekly oral Fosamax as an alternative to annual Reclast infusions that cause week-long flu-like symptoms. A caller reports dizziness when sitting up in bed and recent fainting episodes during hot weather. Dr. Dawn distinguishes vestibular problems from postural hypotension — spinning dizziness when legs are still in bed suggests loose otoliths in the semicircular canals rather than blood pressure issues. She recommends the Dr. Foster vestibular exercises and increased fluid and salt intake. Cancer survival has reached a major milestone: 70% of U.S. patients now survive at least five years, up from 50% in the 1970s, thanks to reduced smoking and advances like immunotherapy and checkpoint inhibitors. An Estonian Biobank study of 67,000 adults found men's libido peaks in their early 40s while women's peaks in their 20s-30s with sharper decline around age 50, though testosterone levels begin falling in men's early 30s. Dr. Dawn frames perimenopause and menopause as natural transitions rather than diseases, explaining that perimenopausal hormone swings can actually be larger and more erratic than during fertile years. She recommends limiting caffeine (which is metabolized more slowly after menopause), alcohol, and spicy foods, and strongly advocates transdermal bioidentical hormones over oral synthetics—oral estrogen increases clotting risk 400% while transdermal carries no increased risk. An emailer asks about transcranial magnetic stimulation for depression. Dr. Dawn explains that while the technology works and shows benefit in studies, targeting remains challenging because each person's brain architecture differs based on individual developmental experiences. Researchers found that applying gamma-frequency electrical stimulation (40-90 Hz) to frontal and parietal lobes made participants more likely to choose generous money-splitting options with strangers, suggesting brain stimulation can nudge social decision-making toward altruism. A small Indian study found that daily conch shell blowing reduced sleep apnea symptoms by 34% after six months, similar to earlier didgeridoo research—blowing against resistance strengthens airway muscles and increases resting muscle tone during sleep.
I'm a big Matt Ruby fan and this is his third time on the show! I have to say—this was pretty funny—comedian Matt and I got high together and went some places I don't think we would have gotten to—for one thing—I said the way he described his dad was hot. I also check in with him about what Claude AI said when I asked:"What would be good advice to comedian matt ruby from a therapist?" We talk about a lot of stuff. Matt describes his parents—a free-spirited woman from Manhattan and his dad, a lawyer, a prosecutor. They were introduced by his grandma and fell in love right away, His father loved comedy which was obv a huge influence on Matt. We also go down a rabbit hole about the ego and the way ego can affect one's own creativity. There's so much in here—and SO MUCH laughing! Sponsored by KOAN pocket elixers. Nutritionist Leyla Muedin discusses nutrition and menopause, defining menopause as 12 months without a period and noting it can occur naturally or due to surgery/medical procedures. She links declining estrogen to increased cardiometabolic risk, endothelial dysfunction, vascular aging, musculoskeletal pain, and higher risks with early menopause (including cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and dementia), and notes many estrogen-modulated conditions are associated with gut dysbiosis. She emphasizes lifestyle—especially nutrition—as key, highlighting anti-inflammatory, minimally processed eating and warning against ultra-processed foods, refined carbs, and excess omega-6. She cites research that high adherence to a Mediterranean diet improves markers like heart rate, lipids, triglycerides, CRP, and overall cardiometabolic risk, and mentions omega-3s lowering triglycerides while modestly raising HDL and LDL. She reviews diet approaches for hot flashes, suggests reducing caffeine, alcohol, sugar, and carbs, notes some women require (bioidentical) HRT, and describes clients improving symptoms with dietary change.

Perplexed by patients with normal exams but persistent symptoms like recurrent UTIs or palpitations? It could be menopause. In this insightful episode of Succeed In Medicine podcast, host Dr. Bradley Block interviews Dr. Lauren Streicher. They explore commonly overlooked menopause symptoms beyond hot flashes: recurrent urinary tract infections tied to genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), palpitations as "hot flashes of the heart" (often sinus tachycardia without EKG changes), GI microbiome shifts causing nebulous digestive issues, xerostomia (dry mouth) linked to oral health risks, and skin/hair changes like alopecia. Dr. Streicher emphasizes reassuring patients early, validating symptoms as hormonal, and tailoring treatments, vaginal estrogen, safe even for breast cancer patients, systemic hormones, or new non-hormonal NK3 receptor antagonists like fezolinetant. They discuss the SWAN study's findings on long-term risks from untreated hot flashes (e.g., cardiovascular disease, bone loss), the need to differentiate perimenopausal (temporary) vs. lifelong postmenopausal effects, and avoiding arbitrary hormone therapy stops after 5 years. The conversation also touches on sexual health gaps in medicine, with tips for better history-taking and resources like Dr. Stryker's "Come Again" course. Listeners, clinicians and patients alike, will gain tools to address menopause holistically, improving quality of life and preventing complications. Three Actionable Takeaways: Recognize GSM in Recurrent UTIs: For postmenopausal women with new-onset recurrent UTIs, suspect genitourinary syndrome of menopause, prescribe local vaginal estrogen (cream, suppository, or ring) to restore microbiome and tissue health; it's safe for most, including breast cancer survivors on aromatase inhibitors. Reassure on Palpitations First: When midlife women present with palpitations, lead with "This is common in perimenopause (up to 50% affected) likely autonomic dysfunction like a 'heart hot flash'"; order a Holter monitor, but emphasize it's often benign and tied to vasomotor symptoms, treatable with hormones or NK3 antagonists. Integrate Sexual History Properly: Ditch "Are you sexually active?", ask "Many women in menopause experience low libido, pain with sex, or orgasm difficulty; are any of these issues for you?"; refer to resources like Dr. Streicher's course for evaluation scripts, screeners, and solutions to address 50% of patients' unspoken concerns. About the Show: Succeed In Medicine covers patient interactions, burnout, career growth, personal finance, and more. THE BETTER BELLY PODCAST - Gut Health Transformation Strategies for a Better Belly, Brain, and Body
Have you been told you have low estrogen — and the solution was immediately birth control or hormone replacement — but no one could explain why your estrogen is low in the first place? Or maybe you haven't even tested yet, but you're dealing with classic low estrogen symptoms like dry skin, low libido, thinning hair, weight gain, anxiety, or brain fog… and you're wondering if low estrogen could be the missing piece. Or maybe you have tried supplements, hormones, or lifestyle changes to raise estrogen — and nothing sticks. You feel better for a minute… then crash again. And you're left asking: Why won't my hormones actually rebalance? If you said “yes” to any of those, this episode is for you. Today we're continuing the Real Root Cause Series, where I take conditions that are commonly treated like the root cause — and show you what's actually driving them underneath. This matters because confusing a symptom for a root cause is the fastest way to stay stuck… even when you're “doing all the right things.” Today's topic is low estrogen. In this episode, I'm breaking down:Why low estrogen really happensCommon low estrogen signs and side effects Why artificially boosting estrogen sets you up for potentially worse problems long-termThe five real root causes that lead to low estrogenAnd the exact tests to find which root causes you are uniquely dealing with And one more thing — for this entire Real Root Cause Series, I've created visuals. If you're a visual learner, or you want to see the full big-picture flow of what's draining your hormones, head to betterbellytherapies.com/root to download the graphics that go with this episode. Because when you stop trying to raise estrogen by force and start restoring the vitality your body needs to make hormones again — that's when you get full-body transformation. I am excited to welcome Dr. Jayne Morgan as my guest today. She is a cardiologist and the Vice President of Medical Affairs at Hello Heart, specializing in women's health and cardiovascular research. In our conversation, we look at the gaps in clinicians' training around perimenopause and menopause, also discussing gender neutral training, and how men and women are treated differently in the medical system. Dr. Morgan shares her preferred areas of focus when educating middle-aged women about hormone replacement therapy and clusters of diagnoses, which include diabetes, dyslipidemia, high blood pressure, and weight-loss resistance. We examine how myocardial infarctions (heart attacks) tend to manifest differently in women, often with microvascular disease, atypical chest pain, and less obvious symptom patterns. We also explore screening recommendations, such as EKGs, Lp(a) assessments, and mammography for microcalcifications, which might indicate an elevated risk for cardiovascular disease. This fun and lively conversation with Dr. Morgan offers valuable, practical insights into women's heart health. I look forward to recording future podcast episodes with her. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: One-size-fits-all treatment of women during medical training in the '90s and early 2000s Speaking up in the exam room when something doesn't feel right When hormone therapy was labeled dangerous, and the fallout that followed Medicine's uncomfortable truth: clinicians must keep learning or fall behind Gender-neutral cardiology and the women it left behind The midlife risk-factor pileup no one prepared women for Why not taking blood pressure or cholesterol medications is risky rather than healthy Heart attacks often mistaken for anxiety, especially in women Slow change, real progress in women's cardiology care Connect with Cynthia Thurlow Follow on X, Instagram & LinkedIn Check out Cynthia's website Submit your questions to support@cynthiathurlow.com Join other like-minded women in a supportive, nurturing community: The Midlife Pause/Cynthia Thurlow Cynthia's Menopause Gut Book is on presale now! Your butt is not about aesthetics. It is a longevity organ that directly impacts metabolism, brain optimization, resilience, and how long you stay strong as you age. In this episode, you'll learn why strength training and protein intake matter more than body fat percentage, how mitochondria drive human performance and recovery, and why building muscle protects your brain, stabilizes mood, and supports long-term longevity. This conversation reframes biohacking, anti-aging, and health from weight loss to muscle span, the length of time you live with strong, functional skeletal muscle. Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey sits down with Gabrielle Lyon, an accomplished physician and New York Times bestselling author of Forever Strong: A New, Science-Based Strategy for Aging Well, and author of the upcoming The Forever Strong Playbook, releasing January 27, 2026. Dr. Lyon pioneered the Muscle-Centric Medicine® approach, which places muscle at the center of disease prevention, metabolic health, and true vitality. She has trained elite athletes, military operatives, and public figures, while also living this philosophy at home as a mother of two with her husband, a retired Navy SEAL. Together, they break down why intermuscular fat may matter more than body fat percentage, how skeletal muscle drives insulin sensitivity and lowers inflammation, and why becoming physically stronger improves brain function and neuroplasticity. They explore protein needs across the lifespan, fasting, ketosis, carnivore-style nutrition, supplements, sleep optimization, and the real tradeoffs of GLP-1 drugs, including the risk of accelerated muscle loss if strength and protein are neglected. The conversation also covers mindset, hormesis, and why physical resilience creates emotional regulation and clearer decision-making in a world increasingly shaped by AI and convenience. This episode is essential listening for anyone serious about biohacking, hacking human performance, longevity, mitochondria, neuroplasticity, nootropics, metabolism, functional medicine, anti-aging strategies, supplements, and living Smarter Not Harder, ideally with a cup of Danger Coffee in hand. You'll Learn: • Why your glutes and skeletal muscle are critical drivers of longevity and brain health • Why intermuscular fat can matter more than body fat percentage for metabolic dysfunction • How strength training improves neuroplasticity, cognition, and emotional resilience • Why protein needs increase with age and why outdated limits can hold you back • What GLP-1 drugs get right, where they fail, and how to protect muscle span • Why progressive stimulus beats lifting heavy for long-term strength and injury prevention • How sleep optimization and recovery support mitochondria and human performance • How building muscle creates clarity, resilience, and better decision-making Dave Asprey is a four time New York Times bestselling author, founder of Bulletproof Coffee, and the father of biohacking.
