Erika Stallings wrote an interesting articled titled, “When Black Women Go From Office Pet To Office Threat.” The article details the traumatic transition professional black women experiences from being adored and guided early in our career to being corporately marginalized and sabotaged once we attempt to establish a name for ourselves.  In other words, you go from being everyone's favorite, i.e. “Office Pet” until you show some ambition and independence then you roughly transition into the Karen/Jeff enemy #1, i.e. “Office Threat.”The article was extremely telling and relatable so we wanted to discuss how you can ensure you're not coddled into being the Office Pet, soon to be Office Threat cycle within a new work environment. Please rate, review, and subscribe wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts!Catch up on some of our many articles on our Blog !!  Like and follow our page on Facebook, “Full-Time Black Woman” Follow us on Instagram @fulltimeblackwomanFollow us on Twitter @FTblackwoman***********************************************************************************************************BUZZSPROUT LINK:fulltimeblackwoman.com/buzzsprout/***********************************************************************************************************Please rate, review, and subscribe wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts!MERCH IS HERE!! So often we give our all to excel and climb upwards in our professional lives whether it's the corporate space or entrepreneurship. We see success relatively quickly, get into a top-tier groove and reach a summit we once dreamed of. However, for some there comes a time when the view from the mountaintop isn't quite what they pictured. And in the comfortable chaos that led to your success, you find peace is more important and a shift occurs. Today we're spilling the tea on shifting careers and maintaining growth.April started in book publishing and fell in love with the industry. She was able to meet new creatives, work with them closely on bringing their dream to fruition, and watch the results of their labor play out at retailers. For nine years, April excelled but was also burning the candle at both ends. At this time, she knew she needed to slow down and figure out how to realign her lifestyle so that it wouldn't cause detriment to her health, peace of mind, and business. It was through delving deep into tai chi methodology and the healing benefits of herbal teas that she found balance. From her healing, Upland Tea House was born.MERCH IS HERE!! Firms with the most ethnically diverse executive teams were 33% more likely to outperform their peers on profitability, and those with executive-level gender diversity worldwide had a 21% likelihood of outperforming their industry competitors. A recent study of VC firms found that more-diverse teams had higher financial returns than their homogenous counterparts. The problem is that, to date, companies have not been great at promoting women of color to senior roles. And this isn't for lack of ambition among them: Black women are even more likely to aspire to hold a powerful position with a prestigious title than white women. And yet black women's advancement into leadership roles has remained stagnant…Today we are going to discuss the challenges of Bossin' Up As A FTBW with our guest, Toshia. We are a phenomenal group of humans, excelling in education and career despite the odds. Or at least trying to excel. For some of us, Beyonce's “You Won't Break My Soul” was a mantra we were repeating way before she elevated it to a House Queen Classic. We've seen it in the news, the 4 women who filed complaints against Facebook for anti-black racism which launched a system probe by the EEOC as well as complaints against Google allegedly steering black workers into lower paying jobs and using their knowledge while denying them chances to advance. This is just another Monday for some of us. So today, we wanted to bring on our Sister in Law to discuss Equal Employment Opportunity Commission complaints.Debbie Aderinto is a Black woman in her mid-30s. She is originally from Nigeria, but  currently lives in the Philadelphia area. Debbie is an employment attorney for a global technology company where she is responsible for all labor, employment and HR/workplace issues in the company's North and Latin America regions. Not only does she have degrees on degrees and top notch expertise,  but she is amazing AF! She speaks 2 other languages in addition to English. She's an avid Peloton user and enjoys listening to Afrobeats music, spending time with family and watching soccer games.MERCH IS HERE!! When we're growing through life we learn the importance of intelligence and know-how. We value experience because with it we believe it increases a person's knowledge base. We also are groomed to believe that emotion and intelligence are mutually exclusive, meaning they cannot exist together at the same time. For example, the patriarchal misogynistic thought that women make horrible leaders because they're incapable of managing their emotions especially if on their period. However, what has become increasingly popular in recent years is the concept of Emotional Intelligence. Leading researchers on the topic Peter Salovey and John Mayer define emotional intelligence as the ability to recognize and understand emotions in oneself and others. It involves using this emotional understanding to make decisions, solve problems and communicate effectively. Today we're going to talk about the value of emotional intelligence and how it can make you a better employee and leader.MERCH IS HERE!! Forgiveness is a process where someone who has been wronged chooses to let go of their resentment, and treat the wrongdoer with compassion.Forgiveness does not mean forgetting or condoning the wrongdoing, granting legal mercy, or reconciling a relationship. You can forgive a person while in no way believing that their actions were acceptable or justified. On the other hand, simply saying the words “I forgive you”, or accepting an apology, is not forgiveness. In fact, forgiveness can occur without ever speaking to the wrongdoer. A recurring theme that has come up around black women lately is the pressure to always be on. The phrase “always on” means something is always active, operating or powered. In technology it refers to things that are expected to have continuous connection or be consistently accessible. In human terms, always being on is too tiring to even think about. However,  in our day to day lives that is how some of us operate. Always on in some capacity when in mixed company and corporate spaces. Our minds are full of what to say, what not to say, how to say it, how we'll be perceived, is it a stereotype etc. That constant flow of thought coupled with stressful or even hostile situations can lead to blow ups, break downs and other out of character actions when you least expect it.
