Your iPhone might be running hot and draining fast — and it’s not just you. Dave and Pilot Pete break down the battery chaos introduced by iOS 26.5, which brought overheating, accelerated drain, and even blocked wired charging on iPhone 17 and Air models. The fix that’s working for most people: disable iCloud Keychain first, run Reset All Settings, then carefully re-enable iCloud sync — otherwise you’ll nuke your Wi-Fi passwords across every device. iOS 26.5.1 is out and should help, but until you’ve updated, your electrons deserve better. You’ll also learn why Apple ID passkeys are locked to Apple’s own keychain with no known path to third-party managers like 1Password or Keeper, and why editing a contact on a modern Mac can somehow peg every CPU core — in 2026, no less. From there, Dave and Pete tackle the full listener mailbag: how to rescue missing contact names from Messages, the right way to boot a MacBook with a broken display into clamshell mode so it actually uses the external monitor, and a deep dive on 5K vs. 4K displays where Dave argues your eyes may not care as much as the pixel-per-inch math suggests. You’ll get smart ideas for repurposing a 2015 iPad Pro that can’t run modern apps — including Dave’s Claude Code-built weather dashboard running off a headless iMac as a web interface. A crashing 2021 MacBook Pro turns out to have been felled by a single bad SD card, and the lesson is golden: feed your crash reports to an LLM and let it do the digging. And Don’t Get Caught with outdated OpenAI macOS apps — update ChatGPT, Codex, Atlas, and Codex CLI before June 12th to stay ahead of a code-signing rotation triggered by a compromised open-source library. 00:00:00 Mac Geek Gab 1145 for Monday, June 8th, 2026 June 8th: National Best Friends Day MGG Monthly Giveaway – Win a license to SaneBox Quick Tips 00:00:01 Dan-QT-Multi-select on iPhone with a quick drag 00:04:31 Tim-QT-Have iOS 26.5 Battery Drain? Trump's Election Audit Warning: Someone's Going to Get Caught

American Ground Radio

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 8, 2026 41:50 Transcription Available

You’re listening to American Ground Radio with Louis R. Avallone and Stephen Parr. This is the full show for June 5, 2026. We open with the federal government's announcement of multiple election fraud investigations and a comprehensive audit of California's voter registration system — while California is still counting ballots days after its primary election. We make the case that this isn't just about catching cheaters after the fact — it's deterrence ahead of the midterms. The Trump administration is sending a message to every state that someone is watching, and the only way that message lands is if someone ends up in a perp walk before November. We also explain why election integrity is mathematically connected to voter turnout — because when people believe their vote might not matter, they stop showing up. In our Top 3 Things You Need to Know, May job numbers came in at 172,000 — more than double the economists' expectation of 80,000 — with unemployment holding at 4.3% and wages rising without a single government mandate to do it. Then Florida settled the NRA's lawsuit against its three-day gun purchase waiting period, with the attorney general agreeing the law violated the Second Amendment — a remarkable shift in a state that passed that law with 72% of voters in 1998. And Democratic Congressman Jimmy Gomez — founder of the Dads Caucus in Congress, married with a son — admitted to an extramarital affair with the 29-year-old chief of staff of fellow California Democrat Eric Swalwell. The House Ethics Committee has launched a probe as additional allegations surface. We also have a direct conversation with the one in three working-age men who have checked out of the workforce entirely — not just temporarily unemployed, but not even looking. We say what needs to be said — the greatness God placed inside you is not going to manifest on the couch. Go get a job, start a business, join the military, farm something. Do something. Women are doing it. Your country needs you to do it. Our American Mama Teri Netterville weighs in on Victoria's Secret's dramatic comeback — stock price up from $15 to $75 after the company abandoned its DEI era and returned to supermodels, fantasy, and the product their customers actually wanted. Teri explains why more women than men watched the Victoria's Secret runway show in its prime, why women dress for other women as much as for their partners, and why the body positivity era collapsed under the weight of its own ideology — including the irony that the women who most loudly celebrated it are now on Ozempic. In our Digging Deep segment, a congressional candidate in Iowa published a public confession apologizing for being white, cisgender, able-bodied, middle-class, and college-educated — and we use it to explain the fundamental difference between equal opportunity and equal outcomes that is at the root of almost every major political disagreement in America today. You should not feel guilty for succeeding unless you cheated to do it. America never promised equal outcomes. It promised equal opportunity. Those are not the same thing — and confusing them is the left's most effective lie. We then dig into the judge who just ruled that President Trump's name must be removed from the Kennedy Center by June 16th — U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper, appointed by Barack Obama. Judge Cooper is married to Amy Jeffress, who is Joe Biden's personal attorney and a partner at a law firm that represented E. Jean Carroll in her lawsuit against Trump. The man who officiated their wedding was Merrick Garland. Judge Cooper did not recuse himself. We lay out every connection and ask a simple question — even if the legal ruling was technically correct, how is any of this supposed to inspire confidence in the rule of law? The Senate passed the $70 billion reconciliation package funding ICE and Customs and Border Protection through 2029 — with only one Republican voting against it. We note it was not Susan Collins, not Bill Cassidy, not Mitch McConnell. It was Lisa Murkowski. Again. Then it's Fake News Friday — including whether California is still counting the 1966 governor's race, whether Democrats convinced a man named Dan Sullivan to run against Senator Dan Sullivan in Alaska to confuse voters, whether Democrats want to replace the words mother and father in the law with gestating parent and non-gestating parent, whether Seattle's mayor broke her own Starbucks boycott for a blueberry muffin latte, and whether Disney is making a full-length Jar Jar Binks movie. We also cover a House bill heading to the floor that would allow service members to buy gasoline at military exchanges without paying the federal gas tax — and we ask the only question that matters. Why shouldn't they? And we close with words of wisdom on the 82nd anniversary of D-Day — from FDR, Ronald Reagan, General Eisenhower, and Private First Class Joseph Lesniewski of Easy Company, who said simply, I don't feel like any kind of hero. To me, the work had to be done. May your pursuit of happiness bring you joy. Geek Pride Day kicks off an episode packed with the kind of tips you’ll actually use. You’ll learn why Shift+Tab is your fastest escape from a runaway numbered list, how holding the lower-left CarPlay button summons Siri, and why copy/paste (and drag-and-drop) between apps still beats exporting and re-importing every time. You’ll also get the real story on Comcast’s email migration (spoiler: it’s not mandatory), discover why the Screenshot app blows past Command-Shift-5 (and -4), and figure out how to shut down the fake browser notifications hijacking your Mac. Then it’s into the meaty stuff: whether those no-name fast chargers are quietly cooking your devices, and the brands the guys actually trust to plug in without worry. Public charging stations look innocent until they aren’t, so the crew breaks down power-only cables, data blockers, and the chillingly clever O.MG Cable from Hak5: Don’t Get Caught handing a stranger the keys to your iPhone over a free USB port. You’ll get strategies for sharing organized photo libraries with the non-Mac humans in your life, dock recommendations for driving external monitors from your laptop, and a stacked Cool Stuff Found run featuring Gifski for gorgeous animated GIFs, WhatCable.uk for decoding that mystery USB-C cable in your drawer, Talk For Me v3 piping text-to-speech into FaceTime calls, and free GigSky eSIM data for Visa Signature cardholders heading abroad. Pilot Pete and Dave open Episode 1140 with a rapid-fire round of quick tips you’ll wish you’d known sooner: long-press the App Store icon to jump straight to Updates, long-press a folder to break down its notifications, push iOS updates to your iPhone through your Mac, and delete apps before they auto-update. You’ll also discover that iPad status bar elements respond to mouse clicks, that not every airline demands a passport scan for TSA Touchless, and where to grab a free customizable QR code generator. Then Javier drops by the Don’t Get Caught segment with a warning: run a beta macOS on your daily driver only with your eyes wide open to what could break. In the mailbag, you’ll troubleshoot a Notes folder that keeps un-deleting itself, get walked through iCloud Data Recovery, plan a Fastmail migration and a clean EarthLink exit, weigh OneNote and Apple Notes as Evernote alternatives, decode why your copyright date is stuck in the past, and figure out how much life remains in a 2019 MacBook Pro. Angel cues up the question everyone’s asking: what is an MCP server? And Cool Stuff Found delivers right on cue with the new Fastmail MCP Connector, a Keyword Navigation extension for Chromium browsers, and the I Love a Piano app that turns your iPhone into a pocket keyboard. 00:00:00 Mac Geek Gab 1140 for Monday, May 4th, 2026 May 4th: Star Wars Day (and Dave Brubeck Day) MGG Monthly Giveaway – Enter to win a Function101 Apple TV Button Remote Congrats to March's SoundSource winners: Ian, Robert, and Jeff The MGG Merch Store is Live! We have the zoom mullet. All business up top and no pants on the bottom. Take One Action Today To Build Your #Resiliency So just in case this may not be for you, Here are today's Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating No Pants Day: Though the idea of today is about wearing no pants in public and to pretend like it is nothing out of the normal, I'm not sure I am a fan I do love my PJs and I often wear them all day long…and even more so in these days of zoom calls and working from home. The idea is comfort rules. I am spending way less time on getting ready for work and more time on being creative and getting things done. Succession planning isn't just a CEO issue. It's a frontline necessity in a nonprofit sector where turnover is constant and stability is fragile. When organizations fail to plan, they risk revenue disruption, donor attrition, and cultural erosion that can take years to rebuild. The strongest nonprofits don't react to transitions. They prepare for them by developing internal talent, protecting relationships, and creating clear operational frameworks. Done right, succession planning isn't about replacing people. It's about strengthening the entire organization before change ever happens.

As social media expands, we often find ourselves in a relentless cycle of posting and engaging—competing for a spotlight we may not fully comprehend, nor know how to navigate should our wildest ambitions actually materialize. Platforms are becoming oversaturated, and the pursuit of virality has never been more cutthroat. Yet, this digital noise loses its power when you anchor yourself in your purpose. The frantic race for visibility becomes irrelevant if you understand the "why" behind your work and the intentional utility of your content. Success, especially when your goal is to sell or influence, isn't found by running with the pack; it's found by leading from a place of clarity. I truly believe we are on the verge of a renaissance of originality. Authentic expression has felt absent lately, but it is precisely what will stand out in an era of imitation. This year !! Take the lead. Focus on your mission, ignore the pursuit of clout, and let go of the fear of missing out. True impact isn't measured by volume, but by intent.Look Out 2026! We coming for you!Happy Painting!

You'll come away from this episode with a faster, smarter iPhone and Mac workflow dialed in. You learn how to boss Siri around for brightness, Dark Mode, CarPlay directions, and per‑source audio levels, so your phone actually behaves in the car and on the couch. You tap into power‑user gestures like two‑finger‑tap to open links in a new Safari tab, Quick Actions to spin anything into a PDF, and Option‑click display rotation on the Mac. You even get sneaky with ad‑supported games by flipping Airplane Mode, and peek at where on‑device AI is heading with tools like Locally AI from the SXSW “more personal computer” session. Then you shift into solving real listener problems so your Apple gear finally stays in sync with you. You clean up contact groups, fix that iPad Mail inbox that doesn't match your other devices, and fight back against toll‑free robocalls. You hear which iPhone cases and glass protectors the geeks actually trust, plus protection options like Verizon Home Protect and automation tools like Crank to trigger actions based on what you're doing. You get dropped right into geek therapy this week as you bounce from cult-favorite movies to Pixar shorts, then straight into practical Mac and iOS wins. You learn how to use the twenty-minute rule to bail on bad movies guilt-free, long-press your iPhone's brightness to reveal Dark Mode and other hidden controls, and turn Live Listen into your stealth superpower for staying connected in noisy rooms. You also tighten up your iOS workflow by wrangling multiple photos, files, and links at once, and even rethink how often you actually need to say “Hey” to your devices. Don't Get Caught missing the little system tweaks that make your Apple gear feel brand new again. From there, you dig into real-world listener problems and come away with a cleaner network, a smarter Mac, and a more resilient data setup. You troubleshoot eerie eero behavior and learn how to coax stubborn 2.4 GHz-only devices onto your Wi-Fi, then set your Mac to auto-launch apps on wake with tools like Keyboard Maestro and Advanced SleepWatcher. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is using a variety of tools to surveil folks they want to intimidate and apprehend. That web helps federal agents find people to deport. But it also allows them to identify U.S. citizens who criticize the federal government and its policies.NPR has compiled dozens of stories of people caught up in the surveillance web. Some were monitoring ICE activities and found themselves in interactions with agents who identify them by their names and home addresses. NPR's Scott Detrow talks with Meg Anderson and Jude Joffe-Block who have been collecting the stories, and tracking ICE's surveillance tactics. For sponsor-free episodes of Consider This, sign up for Consider This+ via Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org. Email us at considerthis@npr.org.Reporting from NPR's Kat Lonsdorf contributed to this story. Surrender or Get Caught—The Legal Fork Facing Nancy Guthrie's Abductor

Whoever is responsible for Nancy Guthrie's disappearance is sitting on a decision that will shape the rest of their life. The evidence released so far doesn't suggest a mastermind. It suggests someone who cased the house, came back, and got surprised by a doorbell camera they didn't know existed. Someone who improvised with plants from a pot to cover the lens. Someone who may not have intended for an 84-year-old woman to die—but is now three and a half weeks into hiding the result.Eric Faddis was a felony prosecutor. Now he's a criminal defense attorney. He's seen what happens on both sides when cases like this finally land in a courtroom.Arizona's felony murder statute doesn't require intent to kill. If Nancy Guthrie died during a burglary, that's a murder charge. Add body concealment, evidence tampering, and weeks of flight, and the legal exposure is already catastrophic. But there's still a fork in the road.Faddis explains what walking into a police station with a lawyer and the location of the body actually buys—versus getting caught cold through genetic genealogy or a tip. One scenario gives the defense leverage for negotiation. The other lets prosecutors paint a portrait of someone who hid, lied, and let a family suffer while they calculated their odds. The hardest part: without the body, neither side can prove how Nancy died. The defense can't establish it was accidental. Prosecutors can't establish it wasn't. And the person who created that evidentiary black hole is the one who hid her.Faddis gives the honest answer on what the range of outcomes looks like now—and how fast that range is narrowing.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? You start this episode leveling up your daily workflows with fast, memorable tweaks: styling text in Notes with a long press, dropping today's date into Google Sheets with a quick shortcut, testing your real-world network speed from the Mac, and turning any clipboard grab into a Preview window so you can annotate or export in a flash. You also learn that canceling an in‑app subscription doesn't instantly nuke Family Sharing, why Safari's pinned tabs might be quietly chewing resources, and how to right-size your browser use so it serves you instead of hijacking your Mac. From there, you dive into practical tools for real life: apps to tame your family's book library, a screensaver utility that slows things down, and current router picks spanning UniFi, TP-Link Wi‑Fi 7 options, Eero, and Orbi so your network actually matches your workloads. You hear how to orchestrate multiple AI agents, safely archive and truly back up your mail, and keep your own chatbot from eating your inbox, plus Cool Stuff Found like Omerta, YouTube on Apple Vision Pro, and more—because in the Apple tech world, as in life, Don't Get Caught without the right tools and backups in place. 00:00:00 Mac Geek Gab 1130 for Monday, February 23rd, 2026 February 23rd: Pinocchio Day MGG Monthly Giveaway – Enter to win a Copilot Money! You move fast in this episode, stacking Quick Tips that shave friction off your day almost immediately. You tell Siri to take notes on command, record audio directly inside Notes with native transcripts, and pull off smarter gestures in CarPlay Maps and iOS 26 Safari that feel hidden in plain sight. You tame the Camera side button, rename files faster from Finder and app toolbars, and generally remind yourself that small muscle-memory tweaks compound into real time saved. This is the kind of workflow polish that keeps you ahead instead of catching up. Then the conversation sharpens. You dig into why troubleshooting advice can be too eager to fix the wrong problem, unpack what “absolute mode” thinking really means, and react to Apple's acquisition moves and fresh AirTag releases. Listener questions take you into practical territory like grabbing a single frame from video, sharing iCloud calendars with Android users, and understanding how features get quietly “nerfed,” leading to Pilot Pete’s perfectly named Newly Effectuated Reduced Functionality. You wrap with Cool Stuff Found that spans Vision Pro accessories, immersive gaming, and travel-ready power. The throughline is clear: know what still works, notice what's been taken away, and adapt before it costs you time.
