In the past 24 hours, I swear I've seen this concept of "Quiet Quitting" everywhere.It's this idea that staff does the "bare minimum" as a way to push against the system that's not valuing them or their work.And I find this fascinating, especially in education.Because, let's be honest, education is not in a great spot right now to say the least.Something (or rather, lots of things) has to deeply and fundamentally change.And while this email isn't here to discuss that - it's here to support you and your own mental health - I just want to acknowledge that what many of you are facing as educators right now is a system that is flawed, that doesn't value and support teachers they way that they should be ... the list could go on.But all of this got me thinking about what's called the CTFAR Method that I learned from Neill Williams that goes as such:C = CircumstanceT = ThoughtsF = FeelingsA = ActionsR = ResultsAnd while this concept won't be for all of you, I think it will serve many of you - especially those of you stuck in a position that isn't positive, but who still want to find a way to be happy ... this is your life, after all.While you can't control all aspects of CTFAR - right, we can't control our circumstance ... we can control everything else.We get to be in charge of our thoughts around a circumstance, which lead to our feelings, our actions, and ultimately our results, or the reality we experience in our lives.It essentially takes that old adage of "Life is 10% what happens to you, 90% how you react" but in a much clearer, concrete way.So my thought for you around this is the following:While you can't control your circumstance at all, you do get to control your thoughts around those circumstances, which means you get to control your happiness.And this isn't an either/or situation. This is a both/and.You can be mad at the system, frustrated to no end at unsupportive admin, or left in disbelief with bad student behavior AND empower yourself to control the narrative of your life.In fact, in a recent podcast episode I listened to with Ed Mylett and Dean Graziosi, they were talking about using the pain or pleasure we face as humans to kickstart us in propelling ourselves forward to control that exact narrative, with the ultimate goal of using pleasure to take inspired action toward a different life.I'm happy to share the link to this episode if you're interested - just hit "reply" and let me know.And while I know this concept isn't for everyone, I have found it to be extremely powerful in every aspect of my life - from work to relationships to personal growth.The gist? Quiet quitting is not a new concept, but has gotten a lot of attention recently after the pandemic shook up the job market. The basic idea of quiet quitting is being disengaged from your work and this can often be mistaken for burnout. The key difference is that quiet quitting is intentional, whereas if you are burned out, you are likely to be disengaged as a result rather than as a choice. In today's #straightfromcait episode, Cait explains quiet quitting vs. loud quitting, and the way resentment fuels disengagement.    Resentment is the primary emotion that leads to quiet quitting. This could be resentment for how you are being treated at work, resentment for being forced back into the office, resentment over your job role not being clear enough, or any multitude of reasons. If you are disengaged because you really don't feel like your current position is a good fit for you, it is best to loud quit rather than sticking around and growing more resentful. That resentment builds over time and can lead to burnout, so planning an exit strategy and leaving your job may be the best option for your long term mental health. If you need help working to transform your resentment and make a plan for moving forward, Cait has created the Resentment Journal specifically for that purpose which can be accessed from her website.   Sometimes your job or the company you are working for won't be the best fit for you. It does not always mean that there is something inherently wrong with you or the company. In those situations, it is best to form an exit strategy and leave to find a better fit. In other cases, your company may be willing to work with you to help better meet your needs, and it may come down to having a conversation with your boss or an HR professional to see what can be done. Regardless of the reason causing you to disengage, it is always best to loud quit versus quiet quitting, because in the long run quiet quitting will increase resentment and damage your mental health.   Quotes • “There are going to be situations where you and a company are just not a good fit. Sam and Emma host Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. First, Emma and Sam run through updates on Elon Musk's assault on now-former Twitter staff, surging US employment numbers, Democratic polling in Georgia and Pennsylvania, and the San Francisco Police's “Quiet Quitting” trend ahead of the recall of Chesa Boudin, before diving into Trump's recent announcement of his “very very very [probable]” 2024 presidential run. Digby then joins as she dives right into the state of polling heading into the midterms, walking through the contrast between how much better polling is now than one year ago and the stagnancy that they show in comparison to expectations around the Dobbs decision, also touching on the continuing trend of US political polling becoming more and more out of touch with actual voting. Next, she, Sam, and Emma reflect on the progressively pessimistic and dubious media coverage of the Democratic party, beginning with the coining of the “liberal media” term in the Nixon era, and continuing through to the constant bashing of Democratic chances and tactics that we see today (as in the coverage of Hillary's emails).
