The Valley Today
Frederick County Extension: Meet Candace DeLong

The Valley Today

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 20, 2026 21:01

A Homecoming to the Shenandoah Valley Candace DeLong is settling into her new role as Frederick County's consumer horticulture extension agent, and she's already discovering the perks of the position, she explains to host Janet Michael on this episode of The Valley Today. Just three weeks into the job, she's found herself surrounded by enthusiastic Master Gardeners, chocolate Valentine's Day cake, and a team of 150 volunteers ready to tackle any gardening question that comes their way. However, this isn't Candace's first rodeo in the world of extension work. For the past six years, she served as an extension agent in neighboring Hampshire County, West Virginia, where she covered all areas of agriculture. Now, she's narrowing her focus to home gardening, green industry questions, and working closely with the Master Gardener program—a shift she welcomes after years of juggling everything from livestock to orchards. From Indiana to Apple Country Candace's journey to Frederick County began 13 years ago when she left her hometown of Anderson, Indiana, to pursue a master's degree at Virginia Tech. Unlike most graduate students, she didn't spend her time on the Blacksburg campus. Instead, she conducted research at the Alson H. Smith research lab outside Winchester, diving deep into crop load management in apple orchards. Following her graduate work, Candace spent three years working directly in Frederick County's apple industry, gaining hands-on experience that would prove invaluable. "I was out in the field figuring out diseases and insects and bugs and all of those weed issues and how to deal with them," she explains. Moreover, those years spent driving between orchards gave her an intimate knowledge of Frederick County's geography—a bonus that's already paying dividends in her new role. The Power of Problem-Solving Throughout her career, Candace has witnessed the extension system from multiple angles. She's been a graduate student, a grower who benefited from extension services, and now an extension agent herself. This well-rounded perspective shapes her approach to the job, particularly when it comes to science-based problem-solving. "Through that master's degree, I learned a lot of horticulture, but I also learned how to be a scientist, really how to go through the scientific method," Candace reflects. This analytical mindset proves essential in extension work, where home remedies and folklore often clash with research-based solutions. A Team Approach to Community Service Unlike her previous position in rural Hampshire County, where she handled most questions solo, Candace now works alongside a robust Master Gardener program. These trained volunteers staff help desks across five counties—Frederick, Clarke, Warren, Page, and Shenandoah, plus the city of Winchester—answering gardening questions and providing research-based advice to the community. The Master Gardeners maintain a green helpline every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Frederick County office, where Candace can often be found. Additionally, each county operates its own helpline with specific hours and email addresses, ensuring residents can access expertise close to home. Furthermore, the Master Gardeners take their knowledge on the road, setting up booths at farmers' markets and community events throughout the growing season. They're already planning an elaborate "Ask a Master Gardener" booth for the June GardenFest at Belle Grove, complete with a prize wheel to reward curious visitors. Spring Events on the Horizon As spring approaches, Candace and the Master Gardener teams are gearing up for a busy season. Earth Day celebrations will bring the volunteers to multiple locations, including a new Stephens City Earth Day festival, the Clarke County Fairgrounds event, and the Red Bud Festival in Browntown. Seven Bends Nursery will also host a celebration featuring Master Gardener expertise. "The two weekends surrounding Earth Day are gonna be—that group will be out and about with their information for sure," Candace notes enthusiastically. Balancing Work and Family Despite her horticultural expertise, Candace admits her home garden has seen better days. With a 1-year-old daughter who puts everything in her mouth, maintaining raised beds and unique apple tree cultivars has become challenging. Nevertheless, she's optimistic about the upcoming season and has developed a practical solution: the "snack garden." "We plant a snack garden that can be trampled on and the vines can be pulled down and they get excited about it," she explains with a laugh. "You have to strategically plan the garden for the children." A Perfect Time to Start Candace joins two other new agents—Cynthia Fairbanks, based in Warren County, and Liz Rohrer, based in Clarke County—creating what Janet calls "a new crop of extension agents." This timing couldn't be better, as the trio can attend professional development trainings together and support one another through farm visits and community events. Meanwhile, her colleague Mark Sutphin, who has been covering both commercial and consumer horticulture, can now focus more on his specialty: working with tree fruit growers and commercial vegetable operations.  Looking Ahead As Candace settles into her role, she's energized by the constant learning opportunities. "I get to learn along with them," she says of the Master Gardeners. "I get to learn through their educational hours that they get to do. And taking in all that information is really exciting for me." For residents across the five-county region, Candace's arrival means renewed focus on consumer horticulture and strengthened support for the already impressive Master Gardener program. Whether you're dealing with tomato pests, wondering about tree diseases, or simply curious about starting your first vegetable garden, help is just a Wednesday morning visit—or an email—away.

She shares why that decline still counts as a long-term win, how becoming a mom fundamentally changed her capacity and scheduling, and why many sales strategies that once worked stopped converting as buyer behavior shifted.Kendra walks through the strategic pivots she made throughout the year, including bringing back one-on-one programs, moving her community from Facebook to Slack, and replacing underperforming evergreen funnels with live webinars that converted cold traffic at impressive rates. In this episode of Founder Talk, I sit down with Mark Bealin, SEO Expert and founder of SearchLab, to unpack what it really takes for businesses to get found today, across Google, local search, and the rapidly changing world of AI-powered discovery. This is not a surface-level SEO conversation. Our conversation breaks down how search has evolved, why many founders are unknowingly invisible online, and what actually matters now if you want customers to find you instead of your competitors.Mark shares hard-earned lessons from building companies through multiple search eras, from the early days of Google to today's AI-driven answer engines. We also dig into why chasing hacks is a losing game, how customer obsession directly impacts rankings and revenue, and why reputation, trust, and fundamentals matter more than ever in a world of zero-click searches and AI summaries. We also go deep on the practical side. Local search, Google Business Profiles, reviews, content strategy, and how founders should think differently about SEO as a long-term business asset, not a marketing trick. Along the way, Mark connects search strategy to leadership, focus, and building a company that can adapt as technology keeps changing. You'll learn:✅ Why most founders misunderstand how customers actually find businesses today✅ What matters more than rankings in a world of AI answers and zero-click search✅ How reputation and customer obsession directly impact growth and visibility✅ Why chasing SEO “hacks” hurts long-term performance and trust✅ How to future-proof your business as search and AI continue to evolveIf you are a founder or business owner trying to grow demand, win trust, and stay relevant as search shifts under your feet, this conversation will reshape how you think about being discovered.Connect with Mark Bealin Guest LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/markbealin/Guest Website: https://searchlabdigital.com/If you are a B2B company that wants to build your own in-house content team instead of outsourcing your content to a marketing agency, we may be a fit for you! Vote on the Jeffrey Awards: https://forms.gle/zC29GEAgUJBKNn8T6I brought the cowboy hat out for this one, because Month of Jeff needed full giddy up vibes. Jeff “Bronco Billy” Browning is back, and we go everywhere: Cocodona's weird and wonderful rise into a spectator cult phenomenon, the tiny weather window that makes that race possible, and what it feels like when you are having one of those perfect days in a hundred.Jeff talks about his best races ever (including a scorching San Diego 100 and a 19:33 at Wasatch), and what actually made them click, training blocks, timing, and yes, a little luck. We also get nerdy and practical with an underrated, overrated, properly rated game, covering trail super shoes (carbon on trail, and why the foam matters more), heat training, speedwork for ultra runners (hello zone 3), and why you have to practice race nutrition in training if you want race day to feel automatic. Then we time travel to the early 2000s when ultra gear was basically a fishing vest era, handheld bottles ruled, poles were not a thing, and race nutrition was gels, S-caps, and hope. Jeff shares how mentorship and group long runs shaped the scene back then, and why adventure running and storytelling still matter more than a stat on a results page.We also get into the realities of long efforts and sleep deprivation, including why Jeff would choose self-supported if he goes long again (less complaining, more problem solving). And yes, there are animal stories, including some genuinely terrifying mountain lion encounters, plus the lightning strike moment at Hardrock that led to one of the most ultrarunning reasons ever to change your earrings. To close it out, Jeff breaks down how he made hundreds work while raising a family, with a simple framework: flexible training, non-negotiable family time, and getting creative with when long runs happen. We finish with what is next, some training races, Cocodona, a Western States swing, and the itch to do more adventure style projects.Sponsors: Janji, Garage Grown Gear, CS CoffeeChapters00:00 Introduction and Background05:48 Cocodona 250: Growth and Popularity08:38 Memorable Races and Personal Bests11:51 The Mental and Physical Toll of Long Distances14:44 Self-Supported vs. Supported Racing17:48 The Shift in Running Focus: Adventure vs. Competition20:55 The Importance of Storytelling in Running23:51 Training Insights: Speedwork and Nutrition28:29 Preparing for Race Day: The Importance of Training Camps30:00 Evolution of Gear: Trends from the Early 2000s33:09 Nutrition and Hydration: Lessons from the Past35:46 The Social Aspect of Ultra Running: Mentorship and Community39:43 From Hobby to Career: The Journey of an Ultra Runner42:36 Race Directing: The Challenges and Rewards45:42 Wildlife Encounters: Stories from the Trail55:18 Balancing Family Life and Ultra Running56:10 Balancing Work and Family Life59:00 Creating Quality Family Time01:02:58 Navigating Technology and Family Connections01:03:50 The Story Behind the Earrings01:10:13 Future Plans and Upcoming Races01:18:39 Introduction and Community Connection01:22:40 The Importance of Supportive Relationships01:26:49 Fostering a Positive CommunitySubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside
