The Government has announced the end is near for the discounts it announced as part of its cost-of-living-crisis package earlier this year. The 25 cent fuel discount has been extended - but only just and it'll be phased out by the end of March. Half price public transport will also be gone at the end March - except for those with a Community Services Card. And say goodbye to the Road User Charges discount - that'll be scrapped on January 31. So how will it affect Kiwis? Particularly Kiwis who earn their living on the road? Chief executive of Transporting New Zealand Nick Leggett told Lloyd Burr 93 percent of New Zealand's freight travels on the back of a truck, so come February 1, Kiwis are going to see an increase in everything that travels on a truck.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Earlier this year the Government announced a temporary subsidy making public transport fares half-price, alongside a discount on fuel prices to ease the pressure on people's wallets as inflation spiked. The policy isn't likely to stay - but many are hoping it does, with a recent 1 News/Kantar poll showing 74 percent of people in favour. One of the people hoping the discounted fares will stick around is Auckland Councillor Richard Hills. Hills spoke to Lloyd Burr on Thursday afternoon and explained why the policy should remain.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The undercurrent of hate directed towards women in leadership is quickly turning into a torrent. Social media, the internet, and other online forums have seen an explosion in sexist and racist abuse levelled at women in central and local politics. It's become a safety concern for many, with security plans being considered to ensure their well-being. It has even prompted former MP and former Christchurch mayor Lianne Dalziel to form a support group to help them deal with it. Wellington Mayor Tory Whanau has copped a fair amount of abuse herself, telling Lloyd Burr on Wednesday afternoon she doesn't know why.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sports New Zealand has published its guiding principles for transgender inclusion in community sports. It doesn't come up with rules, instead acknowledging that a one size fits all approach won't work for differing sporting codes. But said that every New Zealander has the right to participate in sports and be treated with respect and empathy. It also states that transgender people should be able to take part in sports in the gender they identify with - with no questions asked. Sports sociologist Professor Holly Thorpe from the University of Waikato contributed to the consultation process of these guiding principles and spoke to Lloyd Burr on Tuesday afternoon explaining how positive the move is.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
