Paul Brown recently joined Mark Longbottom on the Purposely Podcast to share his unique career journey, which has taken him from corporate roles to leading nonprofit organisations, with a strong focus on international development. Paul began his career in the corporate sector after earning a degree in civil engineering. He worked in marketing roles at Ford Motor Company and ASB Bank. However, in 2000, his priorities shifted. Wanting to contribute to his community, he began volunteering at Starship Children's Hospital. This experience sparked his passion for making a difference and led him to join ChildFund New Zealand. Stepping into the nonprofit sector presented a steep learning curve. Just two weeks into his new role, the Asian tsunami struck, requiring an urgent and effective fundraising response. This experience highlighted the need for organisations to be prepared for global emergencies and strengthened Brown's commitment to the work. During his 17 years at ChildFund, Brown helped transform the organisation. He expanded its focus from fundraising alone to prioritising programme impact. He championed initiatives that supported long-term community development, particularly in the Pacific region, and worked to address local issues like inequality and child poverty in New Zealand. One of Brown's key contributions to the sector was helping establish the Emergency Alliance, a coalition of nine aid agencies in New Zealand. The Alliance collaborates to respond more effectively to global emergencies, reducing inefficiencies caused by competition for donor funds. Its first joint appeal supported the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, although it faced challenges in gaining public engagement. Beyond his work with Emergency Alliance, Brown leads BoardWorks, a consultancy focused on improving governance across New Zealand. Through BoardWorks, he helps organisations strengthen their boards, ensuring they stay mission-focused and operate effectively. Welcome to Purposely SHORT, a weekly episode, featuring one of our friends or past guests and their expertise on a certain topic. This weeks episode features Josie Pagani CEO at ChildFund NZ. The big thing that drives Josie is the desire to 'get some things done' and make a positive difference today. This simple concept drives her approach politically and as a charity leader. Josie talks about the best way to approach international development: “The Pacific wants to power its own future, and we can be part of that.” “We're trying to keep that personal connection that (child) sponsorship has, but acknowledge the broader needs of communities.”
Welcoming Josie Pagani, CEO of ChildFund New Zealand to Purposely where she shares her charities mission as well as her career journey. From her early days in a working-class village in the Cotswolds to her diverse career spanning political activism, film, and social justice, Josie's path to charity leadership has been anything but conventional. The stakes are high when it comes to travel, safety and putting yourself out there on the road. Sue Duffield, along with her husband Jeff, start off this episode with a little update on the hard price of traveling the highways, the bi-ways and the oh-so-crazy ways of unforseen circumstances. Being t-boned at an intersection not long after falling on the pavement at the post office, put a little apprehension into Sue's style of always being confident and jovial. But yet, somehow she seems to find her "ground" again (in a good way!), and is very thankful that her recent debacles weren't a whole lot worse. The devotion of "The Price Is Right" follows their dialogue, describing the horrific sex trafficking industry and Sue's personal account of seeing it first hand. Children for sale? Not on her watch. The travesty is that girls and boys are sold and it's becoming worse with every day. Jesus paid the ultimate sacrifice for every soul born into this world, and THAT price - when it comes to being sold - is right. Sue ends with her song, "The Price is Right", written in 2011 for ®Duffield Music, BMI (used with permission) “He has made everything beautiful and appropriate in its time." Ecclesiastes 3:11 www.sueduffield.com
Tonight on the Huddle, Josie Pagani from Childfund and Kiwiblog writer and Curia Pollster David Farrar joined in on a discussion about the following issues of the day- and more! Auckland University raised some eyebrows after images of designated rooms for Māori and Pasifika students surfaced online. Some students say these rooms are vital, important spaces- do we agree? Amid the buzz around Fred Again.. landing in New Zealand, there's been controversy over his opener getting preferential treatment to get her passport fast-tracked. What do we think of this? The mayors of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch are demanding the Government start paying rates on its buildings in their cities to help with the cities' finances. Fair call? Green Party MP and former Auckland mayoral candidate, Efeso Collins, has died at a charity event in central Auckland. Collins collapsed while participating in the ChildFund, Water Fun event at Britomart this morning. He was a well known community figure in both the South Auckland and the wider Pasifika community.
Join us for a powerful discussion with Josie Pagani, the Chief Executive of ChildFund New Zealand, whose unwavering dedication to improving the lives of children across the Pacific and beyond is nothing short of inspiring. We take a look at the essential work being done to bring clean water, educational opportunities, and vital resources to communities where children's futures hang in the balance. From the challenges facing Kiribati and the Solomon Islands to the complexities of delivering aid in conflict zones like Gaza and Ukraine, Josie shares invaluable insights on the importance of local collaboration and sustainable support systems in crisis-stricken areas. Navigating the undercurrents of politics and social accountability, this episode dissects the intricate relationship between public sector reform and the effectiveness of charity work. The delicate balance between global community support and robust domestic policy is a balance that could very well dictate a nation's prosperity. https://childfund.org.nz/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Top end charity executives are taking home on average half a million dollars a year. The Herald business investigations reporter Matt Nippert has been crunching the numbers. Waipareira's John Tamihere is up there - followed by the Vice Chancellors from Auckland and Victoria Universities. Childfund chief executive, Josie Pagani, didn't make the list. She told Heather du-Plessis Allan that a bit of a double standard applies. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ron and Adam come to us from Wellington, New Zealand to tell us about their journey from Brisbane to Fiji and then their cycle from Brisbane down to Sydney, Australia - which wraps up their 6 weeks in Australia. They flew into Nadi, Fiji from Brisbane and were privileged to experience Fijian's love of the game of rugby. Fiji was an important country for Ron & Adam to visit for two reasons, one that they have teams playing in the 2021 and 2023 Rugby World Cups but also to acknowledge the work that ChildFund Rugby is doing in Fiji. They had an extremely special day with the DHL Express team in Fiji and another great day on a fellow Pretoria Boys High boy's fishing charter. Thank you for that! They flew back to Brisbane and got back on the bikes towards Sydney, via cool surfing towns and with a few great coffees along the way. Ron & Adam got to explore towns that they did not have high expectations for and these places would come to completely change their opinions of them. From watching the Springboks vs Wallabies in a bowling club in Maclean to being treated to great accommodation by Wyndham Hotels group, this part of their cycle has been beautiful and so interesting. Only thing is that they wish they could have seen a koala! A huge thank you to the team at ChildFund who hosted an epic fundraiser lunch in Sydney & thank you to all the people who donated on that day. If you are able to (and if you are inspired by this story so far), please donate to ChildFund Rugby via our website, www.racetorugbyworldcup.com.
Ron & Adam sit down with Mere Baker, a Former World Cup Winning Kiwifern and Aotearoa 7s International player. Mere is a Sky Sport and Maori TV commentator as well as an ambassador for ChildFund, the charity that Ron & Adam are currently raising funds for as they cycle to the Rugby World Cup 2021 to deliver the official whistle to the opening match. With the excitement growing in New Zealand for the Rugby World Cup starting in October, Mere shares more women in sport and the growth of women's rugby all over the world. If you are able to, please donate to ChildFund Rugby here: www.racetorugbyworldcup.com
Adam and Ron talk us through their time in Townsville, Queensland, down to Rockhampton and further south towards Brisbane. A few adjustments to the amounts of people following a few weeks in the Outback and a few great meals Ron and Adam met a few other adventure-seeking junkies, budding professional athletes and other outdoor adventurers. We are always amazed when we find out about different people's journeys and travels and how we have ended up in the same hotel/campsite. Saw a platypus (Adam's highlight), a few kangaroos and other amazing Australian wildlife. Ron had a few great friends join the cycle from Gympie, past the Sunshine Coast towards Colundra. Definitely a highlight of our trip so far! Please remember to donate to ChildFund Rugby via www.racetorugbyworldcup.com. All donations go directly to ChildFund! Day 139
Adam and Ron talk us through their journey from the border crossing of Indonesia and Timor Leste, as well as their trek across the outback of Australia, starting in Darwin. Smiling children helped them get through the tougher days and the beautiful coastline on the way to Dili kept spirits up. They got to visit the ChildFund offices in Timor Leste and were made to feel like part of the team there, which also gave Ron & Adam further insight into the amazing work that ChildFund does. Ron & Adam were really humbled and impressed seeing the passion that people have to commit to the growth of their communities in Timor Leste. Thanks to the New Zealand Embassy for hosting us in Dili too. They chat about the excitement about arriving in Darwin, a friendly interaction with border patrol and a sense of relief in being able to communicate in English. Headwinds & long days were made better by having cold water on the bike & having a warm shower at the end of a day. Thanks to the kind souls that hosting us along the way! If you want to cycle across the Outback, this is the episode to listen to! Ron & Adam have a few interesting stories and experiences that they share in this episode. Listen up if you want to hear the names of Adam's two future children & remember to donate to ChildFund if you can! www.racetorugbyworldcup.com
Neste episódio, recebemos Anette Trompeter, diretora executiva do ChildFund Brasil
The last time we heard from Ron and Adam was from the French Embassy in Cambodia. They fill us in on their cycle from there to Thailand, where they arrived to quite a lot of rain, high humidity levels and delicious food! They continue to meet amazing people, stay in cool places (including a place that has its own driving range) and explore new cycling routes. They fill us in on a few special occasions on this trip, including a special day Cambodia with DHL & ChildFund Rugby, which is the the reason that Ron & Adam are doing this trip is to raise funds for the incredible charity, ChildFund Rugby (Have a listen to Episode 14 and 16 to hear more about ChildFund and the amazing work they are doing!) Chris Mastaglio is the ChildFund Sport for Development Director and has worked to bring together sports and social impact through ChildFund Rugby. Ron and Adam were able to catch up with him in Phnom Penh where he shares a bit about his rugby story and how his team has partnered to use sport to deliver a positive social impact. He chats about how ChildFund Rugby works and what the next few years ahead look like. Chris has been involved with rugby for a long time, having played for many years previously, and sees the opportunities sport can offer to positively impact children. Child sponsorship, originally a project of nineteenth-century Protestant missionaries, has become one of today's most profitable private fund-raising tools for global organizations, including World Vision, Compassion International, and ChildFund. Christian Globalism at Home: Child Sponsorship in the United States (Princeton UP, 2020) is an investigation of two centuries of sponsorship and its related practices in American living rooms, churches, and shopping malls, that reveals the myriad ways that Christians who don't travel outside of the United States cultivate global sensibilities. Hilary Kaell traces the movement of money, letters, and images, along with a wide array of sponsorship's lesser-known embodied and aesthetic techniques, such as playacting, hymn singing, eating, and fasting. She shows how, through this process, U.S. Christians attempt to hone globalism of a particular sort by oscillating between the sensory experiences of a God's eye view and the intimacy of human relatedness. These global aspirations are buoyed by grand hopes and subject to intractable limitations, since they so often rely on the very inequities they claim to redress. Based on extensive interviews, archival research, and fieldwork, Christian Globalism at Home explores how U.S. Christians imagine and experience the world without ever leaving home. "A leader really needs to be able to hold the anxiety that people have for uncertainty and discomfort. Some staff want to know details right away, and as a leader, I have to 'protect them' and tell them, 'Things are okay.' Even if that rocks my comfort level, it helps them and holds their anxieties."This week is part two with Anne Lynam Goddard, the President and CEO of ChildFund International. We dive right into it discussing topics leaders often stray away from: Fears, Anxieties, Mistakes, Strategies, and Struggles. I am grateful for her openness and bringing you detailed lessons. Our conversation is honest in talking about what kinds of things keep leaders up at night, how do you navigate through those feelings, when do you communicate stress with teams, all of these hardships are brought to light. I love one thing Anne says to her team, "Together we will figure out the next steps and learn as we go."Thank you to Anne for her time and her candor! This week I sit down with the poised Anne Lynam Goddard, the President and CEO of ChildFund International. Anne’s passion for her position is palpable. I love Anne’s spirit, grace, and deep investment into her support of children and their families. While many, during the pandemic, took the route to sit back and allow business, and life to happen to them the ChildFund International team dove straight into crisis by launching their own diversity initiative. “The staff and team have spent time to come up with ways we can improve as an organization. Within ourselves and in what we do for those around us.” One thing I appreciate about Anne’s leadership is her intention with bringing her staff/team along side her, particularly now. From making decisions and initiatives, to identifying needs to alleviate stressors, she is focused on the well being of those in her organization. There is much to learn from Anne in this episode and I can’t wait for you to listen in. “I think we need to communicate more than ever. I have been adding in more staff meetings, written communication, phone calls, I want to share with them what I know, when I know it, because there is much uncertainty.”Thank you Anne for your time and your lessons! We spend an hour with a band that's been in the Christian music scene for decades. Bryan Oleson comes to The Antidote for a chat about how on their latest album, VOTA set out to explore God through the music of U2, Foo Fighters, David Bowie, Tom Petty and many other artists. Support a cause greater than yourself by sponsoring a child through ChildFund.
Kat and Moose celebrate Kat's latest venture while playing with Zoom filters, and Moose likens it to a common Brené Brown concept, scars versus scabs. We can't help but cover the past week's current events briefly, and move quickly onto equally as controversial subjects. Kat enjoys her new Kat and Moose Podcast hoodie, ending badly and Moose is triggered by mirroring. Kat and Moose have a mushy moment recounting a former disagreement, encouraging you, our listener, to consider broader perspectives. We share stories involving (a little too much) alcohol and Kat hates for a party to end. Also, we love Jenn & Marcus DePaula at Mixtus Media. Developing countries often struggle to provide basic health and education. As they now focus their efforts to contain the pandemic, funding for other sectors are at risk, undermining years of efforts to tackle poverty through education. In this episode, former CEO of Child fund Nigel Spence discusses some of the consequences of maintaining schools closed in the long-term, particularly in developing countries.
At 83 years-young, Charlie Daniels passed away on July 6, 2020. Filmed at his home studio in Nashville last year, this never-before-seen conversation with the Country music legend (https://charliedaniels.com) was much more than a chit-chat with a musical giant – it was a glimpse into the heart of a man educated and inspired by a lifetime of family, faith, and of course, music. Under his leadership, ChildFund has expanded its programs to children and young people in Vietnam and Papua New Guinea, and commenced new operations in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Timor-Leste. Nigel is taking some time off to continue his studies into child protection policies in Vietnam, before continuing his work in the social sector in Australia. You may recall a few weeks back I aired the talk that Nigel delivered at the Pawa Liklik NGO Forum organised by the Kokoda Track Foundation in Sydney in October 2019. In this episode Nigel and I dive a bit deeper into some topics that are very important to our sector, including Sport For Development, our Aid Review and Child Sponsorship. In this episode, you’ll hear Nigel and I talk about ChildFund’s work in the area of sport for development. It feels like sport and aid programs were once an unlikely pair, but in recent years many NGOs in Australia have implemented sports-based programs as a means of building relationships in communities, teaching vital skills, combating non-communicable diseases and more. In fact, Australian Aid has been funding sport for development programs since 2009. According to the DFAT website, sport is a vehicle to achieve development outcomes in areas such as health, gender and disability inclusion. In my view, sport has it’s own inherent benefits to communities but it’s also an effective means of outreach and relationship-building, and has flow on effects to other development programs. As a country that provides itself on sport, it also makes sense for sport to be part of our unique aid identify. In this episode we also discuss why economic growth doesn’t always equate to widespread poverty reduction, despite popular belief that the two go hand in hand. Countries in South East Asia especially exemplify that increased economic growth alone doesn’t result in improvements nationwide to the wellbeing of communities. This part of the discussion gets to the heart of why economic growth doesn’t always justify decreased aid support. The other topic I particularly like in this discussion is child sponsorship. ChildFund continues to have child sponsorship as an element of its fundraising and outreach strategy, however has diversified into several other funding streams as well. Nigel and I chat about how child sponsorship has evolved as child protection laws are tightened, and how exactly ChildFund administers sponsorship funds. So - where do you sit on the sport for development agenda and should it play an even bigger role in our aid policy? Where has economic growth not equated to widespread poverty reduction and how do we rewrite this narrative? And lastly, how do we build connections between Australians and people in countries our aid supports, with respect for cultural nuance and identity? Enjoy, Rachel and the GWH Team

We are all given the call to be witnesses of Jesus. And our life's impact will be far greater than we can imagine, having global and eternal implications. Some are called to go to foreign lands and make Jesus known to people who have not heard. In all this, Jesus reminds us that mission comes through struggle and sacrifice, is aimed at people and has the ultimate desire of seeing Jesus return and reign. To find out more about Jeff Miller's work at Childfund, visit their website at www.childfund.org.
