Now I get the opportunity to turn that love and connection into helping even more people at Breathe Strong CF."  Julie Dunn Eichenberg didn't just find the cystic fibrosis community, she's been part of it for more than 30 years as a proud CF aunt. That personal connection is what makes this next chapter so meaningful. Julie recently stepped into the role of Executive Director at BreatheStrong CF, where the focus is on helping people with cystic fibrosis live stronger, healthier lives through exercise, education, and empowerment. And while she brings decades of experience in leadership, fundraising, and relationship-building, she's honest about getting used to the role. She's learning. Listening. Figuring out the day-to-day. And really taking the time to understand how she can best serve the community in this new position. Before this, Julie spent 20 years at Turner Broadcasting System (now part of Warner Bros. Federal Chief Information Officer Greg Barbaccia will be adding two new titles — at least temporarily — to his work in government. The General Services Administration announced Thursday that Barbaccia will join the agency as the acting director of Technology Transformation Services. He'll be replacing Thomas Shedd, one of the few officials left at the agency who helped carry out the so-called Department of Government Efficiency's cost-cutting initiative last year. Shedd will remain at the agency as its senior advisor for fraud prevention, which the GSA said is “an area of increasing importance for the agency and the administration.” The federal CIO was also tapped as senior advisor to the GSA administrator, the agency said. In this role, advising former privacy equity executive Edward Forst, Barbaccia will focus on “emerging technologies, best practices in digital delivery, and cross-government collaboration.” The Pentagon will adhere to existing laws and regulations associated with surveillance, security and democratic processes as it fast-tracks the military's frontier AI adoption, but it won't permit companies supplying the technology to determine its rules for operation, Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Emil Michael told DefenseScoop. His comments come as the Defense Department is locked in a high-stakes dispute with Anthropic about the U.S. military's use of the startup's Claude AI model in real-world operations. During a meeting with a small group of reporters on the sidelines of the annual Microelectronics Commons summit Thursday, Michael provided updates on the department's GenAI.mil rollout and pushed for the ethics-related rift between the Pentagon and Anthropic to be resolved. “I believe and hope that they will ‘cross the Rubicon' and say, ‘This is common sense. The military has certain use cases. There are laws and regulations that govern how those use cases can be done. We're willing to comply with them,'” he said. As a leader, the more you show your human side and reach out to others for help, the stronger the chance that the people around you will start to do the same. There are plenty of leadership lessons for early-career faculty and beyond in this week's Faculty Factory Podcast interview, just in time for the holidays, with our new friend Nicole Jarrett, MD, FACS. We hear about her journey and the transition from faculty member to a formal leadership role as Division Chief. Dr. Jarrett serves as Division Chief of Hand Surgery in the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She is also an Assistant Professor and the Hand Surgery Fellowship Director at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. The confidence to ask questions is an important sign of a confident leader. We all have days when we need help, and displaying the confidence to ask questions is essential. "It's okay to ask for help. We're all going to find ourselves in situations where we feel overwhelmed or where things aren't going right, and we need support,” she said. Midway through the discussion, Dr. Jarrett talks about the art of purposeful socializing. It's crucial to allocate time for social functions in our lines of work, especially in leadership roles, and taking a very strategic and efficient approach to how we engage in these functions pays dividends. It can also save time. “It's not all fun at these parties; you have a job to do. I'm very glad someone gave me that lesson, and I'm happy to pass it along to my faculty,” Dr. Jarrett discussed.

In this quick, yet critical episode, Tammy J. Bond tackles a fundamental leadership challenge: ensuring you have the right people in the right seats on your organizational "bus". Prompted by a leader struggling with under-delivery (not under-performance), Tammy challenges the common impulse to start with people. Instead, she provides a strategic framework to audit your organization, starting with the needs of the business before assessing the talent you have. This episode is imperative for leaders planning their success for the upcoming year and looking to replace disfunction with intentional structure. Key Leadership Insights: The Performance Gap: If team members are doing "solid work" but lacking creativity or "anything extra," the problem likely isn't the person's effort—it's the position's fit or a lack of clarity from the leader. The Strategic Bus Audit: Don't start with the Who (people). Start with the What (the seats/positions needed) to achieve your goals. What: Define the positions, expectations, and goals required for the next level of growth. How: Determine the model or required competencies for success in those seats. Who: Then look at your team members to see who possesses the qualities and qualifications to fill the defined seats. Hope is Not a Strategy: Relying on the hope that someone will "figure it out" or move on is like "throwing a dart blindfolded." Action is required to align people with position expectations. Beyond the Resume: Many leaders hire based on the resume, not the heart or true organizational need. Hiring for impressive qualifications without clearly defining the position leads to mismatched talent. Actionable Tools & Strategic Questions: Audit Your Team's Energy: Use the Working Genius Model (by Patrick Lencioni), or similar tools, to discover what parts of the job give your team members energy versus what leaves them feeling frustrated. Align their roles to maximize energy and momentum. Know Their Place on the Bus: Ask your team members what they want more of, what they want less of, and what truly lights them up about their job. The Avoidance Trap: If you're avoiding the conversation, you're wearing the avoidant behavior hat. You must have the conversation to clarify how the individual can win at their current position. Leader, lead yourself well first. Get your expectations clear. Be intentional about taking your organizational "bus" apart and putting it back together based on the needs of the growth model, not the people you currently have.
