David Seymour is absolutely on the money with his call to cut the number of ministers in Cabinet and outside of Cabinet. In his speech yesterday, he proposed capping the number of ministers at 20 —currently there are 28— and scrapping the position of minister outside of Cabinet. “Right now, there are ministers that have seven different departments. There are departments such as MBIE that answer to 19 different ministers. There are portfolios, just to give you one example, not to pick on it, but the Minister for Auckland that Labour created – there's no Auckland department, there's no Auckland vote in the budget, it's just a made-up thing, frankly. And I think that really, we should be moving to a world where each department has only one Minister, no portfolios exist unless they have an actual department with a budget and a thing to do, and there should be no ministers outside of the Cabinet, everyone should be sitting around the same table. That's going to take a lot of people making a concession, but if we could get there, I think the whole thing would just get stuff done faster.” Couldn't agree more. I've always seen the roles of Minister for Women, Minister for the Voluntary Sector, Minister for Auckland, Minister for the South Island, sops to lobby groups. As David Seymour said in his speech, it's symbolism. Portfolios, he said, should not be handed out like participation trophies. Could not agree more. Michael Wood was made Minister for Auckland at the beginning of 2023 in Chris Hipkins government. Did he do anything? No. Did he have any power? Not really, no. As David Seymour said, there's no budget. So why create it? Because Chris Hipkins realised he needed to get Auckland back on side after the Covid response, after the crime waves that affected so many retailers in Auckland. It was a sorry guys, here's a Minister for Auckland we prepared earlier. Didn't work, too little, too late. Later on in ‘23, the red wall crumbled in Auckland and Labour strongholds went to National. Labour knows they need to win them back and Chris Hipkins understands they need to do more than appoint an Auckland spokesperson, but I suppose it's a start. Not everybody sees them as a waste of time – when the very sound James Meager was made Minister for the South Island, the Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown said it was a good move. South Island councils had told the government they felt their voice wasn't being heard, having a local MP promoted to minister outside of cabinet would provide a more direct connection with Wellington. Again, I don't think there's any real merit in having a minister for the South Island other than as a sop to South Islanders. You think we neglect you? You think Auckland's getting all the attention here? He is a minister, a fine young man we prepared earlier, have a Minister! In fact, everybody have a Minister! Minister for Hospitality, Minister for Racing, Minister for the Voluntary Sector. It nullifies the effect of having a Minister. If you don't have a budget and you don't have a vote, what is the point? If you make everybody a head prefect, what is the point? It devalues the position. It might make the minister themselves feel a little bit better, a little bit special, but if everybody's special, nobody is. The only good reason, perhaps to have a minister for anything, other than as a sop, is because you do have fine young talents like James Meager who are given a bit more responsibility. But are they? It's like an apprenticeship for becoming a real minister. It's an absolute nonsense. I couldn't agree with David Seymour more. We've had our disagreements in the past and this one I'm absolutely on board with them. There should not be a minister unless they have a budget and something to do. And government departments should only have one minister to report to, not 19. How could anybody argue with what David Seymour has proposed? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We're talking about a simple technology that can fundamentally reshape the energy industry by transforming electricity more efficiently and with way less physical space than what's been done traditionally.Take an EV charger, for example. You need to get the exact electricity flow right. Usually, that would take a few parking spaces' worth of transformers. With DG Matrix, you can do it with a simple power stand smaller than your refrigerator. This is still the case even if you've got solar, batteries, or other distributed resources all mixed in together. They can handle all the streams of electricity in and out. It's clear the industry is loving this too. Shoot us a Text.Episode #1003: Dealers and analysts react to President Trump's tariff order, as the administration considers a tax deduction for auto loan interest paid. Plus, Fisker Oceans have found new life as a rideshare fleet in NYC.Show Notes with links:Trump's sweeping tariff order is shaking the auto world. The new 25% levy hits nearly all foreign-built vehicles and key components.Analysts predict $4K–$10K price hikes, and Cox Automotive warns that 30% of U.S. vehicle production could be disrupted within a week. GM stock fell 9%, hit hardest due to its reliance on Mexico and South Korea, Ford and Stellantis were down around 2%Ferrari responded by is raising prices by 10%, up to $350K on some models. Even Tesla isn't safe—Elon called the impact “significant” due to global parts sourcing.Michael Wood, GM of JLR Virginia Beach on LinkedIn “This will inadvertently heavily impact a brand that never had jobs here in the first place. The outcome could be disastrous for those working at these stores. Volumes go down, staffs are reduced and displaced.”Rob Malanowski, Internet Director at Ancira Nissan said on LinkedIn “If you're a car shopper, you will get to choose between: paying more for a non-US built vehicle, paying more for a US built vehicle, deciding you don't really need a new car right now. Bet we'll see a ton of people in group 3.”President Trump has proposed a tax deduction for interest paid on auto loans—but only for vehicles made in America. The idea, announced alongside 25% tariffs on imported vehicles, has drawn mixed reactions from dealers and analysts alike.Dealers are split—some say it could help consumers, while others doubt its feasibility.Analysts say the deduction could save buyers around $20 a month, but tariffs could add $60–$90 to payments.Used car prices could rise 9-12% due to increased demand for domestic models. The White House and Speaker Johnson's office have yet to confirm details, including whether the deduction applies to standard tax filers.“I think it's Trump's way of trying to regulate interest rates,” said Ford dealer Nick Anderson, calling it a “pipe dream.”Trump argues the policy will “pay for itself” by increasing U.S. auto production. What happens to thousands of Fisker Oceans after the company goes bankrupt? In New York City, they're hitting the streets as Uber and Lyft rides, thanks to a fleet operator with a vision and a Bronx repair shop keeping them roadworthy.American Lease bought 3,000 Fisker Ocean EVs for $42.5M, renting them to rideshare drivers.New York City mandates all Uber & Lyft rides be EV or wheelchair-accessible by 2030.BHP Service Center in the Bronx is now the go-to repair shop for these orphaned EVsShop owner Ronen (“Roni”) is already stockpiling parts, purchasing wrecked vehicles and even making molds for body panels.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Now I'm a bit of a policy wonk. I don't care which party it is. If they come up with a policy, I like to break it down and see if it makes sense. Now I know politicians are addicted to announcements, attention and media coverage. Which means they sometimes say the first thing in their heads that sound like they'll get votes. No matter if it's deliverable or not. Labour had a bad case of it. Phil Twyford and his 100 thousand Kiwibuild fantasy. Michael Wood was the champion. Based on five minutes on the back of an envelope he announced a nearly $900 million bike bridge. Faced with backlash from Dominion Road businesses he stuck the light rail project underground. Tripling the price to an unaffordable $18 billion dollars. Now it seems like the National led coalition has a case of the same disease. Paul Goldsmith has it bad. This week he announced a change to citizen's arrest rules but had no idea of what the changes are going to be. Classic announcement of an announcement. But the king of wishful thinking is the prince of the provinces, Shane Jones. First, he proposed a special economic zone for Marsden point begging the question why not turn the whole country into a special economic zone. The whole place needs a hand. Then he proposed repairing Marsden point refinery. A fanciful idea that was shot down in hours as the enormous cost of nearly $8 billion dollars came to light. The reason why no Government has repaired the refinery ever since it was sold 40 years ago. The thing about leadership is that you need to make adult decisions and proposals. If you're a cabinet minister you can't just let the first Walter Mitty like thought bubble pop out of your mouth, when you know there's nothing there. That's the lesson Labour learnt last term. Hopefully the Government figures that out soon. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Can social media bring people together rather than divide and deceive us?In the world of corporate social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook, the notion of a nontoxic public forum seems quaint. These are places where political and personal brawling goes on 24/7 and disinformation flows as freely as cat videos. The platforms rely on high conflict to attract eyeballs and make money.Vermonters have another option. Front Porch Forum (FPF), co-founded in 2006 by Michael Wood-Lewis and his wife Valerie, is a decidedly friendly online place where neighbors go to interact civilly with one another, and do what neighbors do: seek advice, buy and sell things, and discuss local issues without resorting to personal attacks. The site is heavily moderated by real people who read each posting and filter out items that offend, incite or misinform. It operates in every town and has nearly 235,000 members, including nearly half of Vermont's adults. The discord common on conventional social media is “not an accident,” said Wood-Lewis. "Another way of saying people are attacking each other and acting cruel is Ooh, member engagement is up. We can sell more ads. We can collect more data to sell to huge data brokers who do God knows what with people's private information. That's the business model of Twitter and Facebook and all these others.”The idea of an online forum that builds community instead of dividing it is attracting national attention. The Washington Post recently reported, “At a time when Americans are increasingly disenchanted with social media, researchers are studying Front Porch Forum to try to understand what makes for a kinder, gentler online community — and what Big Tech could learn from it.”The best indication of FPF's influence is the way that it builds civic engagement. According to a new study by the nonprofit New_ Public, 61 percent of FPF users reported that they had attended a local event or public meeting as a result of something they read on the forum, over half reported that they had discussed issues with a neighbor and one fifth of users said they had volunteered locally in response to a posting on FPF.FPF, which is headquartered in Burlington, employs 30 people, including many content moderators. Wood-Lewis said that a “critical part of our model is that each member-submitted posting is reviewed by our professional staff before publication (which) is absolutely not how any other social media works.”FPF enforces a strict set of rules in its online public square, including no personal attacks. “We're not going to let people basically weaponize Front Porch Forum to do harm to our democracy, to our public health, things like that,” he said.Elon Musk, who owns X, and Facebook owner Mark Zuckerberg insist that the unfettered exchange of views on their platforms is just free speech. Wood-Lewis begs to differ.“I do not think the folks you mentioned have any real interest in protecting free speech. They have an interest in amassing power and money.”Front Porch Forum “has felt better and better as the divisiveness in our national scene has gotten worse, and as the isolation brought on by the pandemic and social media and smartphones and so many different things in modern life has gotten worse,” said Wood-Lewis.Despite requests to expand to other states, Wood-Lewis insisted that FPF will stay local. The online forum proved its value by connecting people impacted by flooding in Vermont in 2011, 2023 and 2024 with help and resources.“As long as Vermont communities are struggling in significant ways, Front Porch Forum wants to be there as an ally and a partner.”

Do I need to remind you that politics is show business? It's all about seeming to be the best instead of necessarily being the best. This is why politicians often say the most ridiculous things and make the most outlandish promises. It's also why they boil complex issues down to simple catchy slogans which are repeated ad nauseum until they gain their own reality. But eventually, reality catches up. Yesterday's backdown over the Fast-Track legislation is proof of that. Under the coalition's original proposal Simeon Brown, Shane Jones and Chris Bishop had the power to green-light anything, even if all advice was against it. This was all in service of the thesis that New Zealand is bogged down in red tape. A slogan hammered time and time again in the election until a significant number of electors believed that giving 3 ministers such power was without risk - and possibly good for the country. The coalition's answer was totalitarian. I was flabbergasted when I first read the policy and astounded that there was not more outrage. It was immense power in the hands of 3 men. Imagine if Michael Wood, Megan Woods, and Willie Jackson had been granted such power in the last Government. You'd be up in arms saying it was undemocratic and dictatorial. It was much more undemocratic than any co-governance plan. But we all heard silence. We'd been well trained and well indoctrinated and no one complained. Now the National-led coalition has seen sense and now the new Fast-Track legislation means a panel of experts in the field will have more say. Which looks almost the same as Labour introduced before the last election - because it is. So in other words, this Government is no more committed to fast tracking as the last lot. So then you ask yourself - what was all that about? It's all about politics, it's all about getting your vote. Meanwhile, the credit agency Fitch came out with their assessment of our credit rating and with it our economy. And despite the widely distributed idea that we're stuffed for generations - the credit agency called us an advanced and wealthy economy. Excuse me? They paid credit to macroeconomic corrections that started during Labour's reign. I beg your pardon? They said New Zealand has a long-standing commitment of fiscal prudence. This is all running against the popular mantra that the last Government left an economy in tatters. It's not in good shape but it's also not in tatters. Fitch pointed out that the real problem with New Zealand's economy is our high level of household debt and a high current account deficit. In other words, we save less than we spend and make up the difference by borrowing foreign capital. That's on you and me and the long-running housing crisis rather than any crisis in Government spending. But you know, politics. Good politics says it's all the fault of the last lot and the best Government policy is to do less. We've become wet, scared, and lacking mojo and confidence. He's a professer emeritus of English and comparative literature at Princeton. But Michael Wood is also a fan of the cinema, especially the films of Alfred Hitchcock, and that's because, with Hitch, truth can be elusive.
E tu Negotiation Specialist, Michael Wood speaks to Lisa Owen about TVNZ losing its appeal to the ERA's ruling over how it handled job losses.

Is the union getting the win over TVNZ in their desire to lay some people off really a win? When TVNZ sacked me many years ago, a lot of people advised me to fight them. They said I had a good case and would win. My argument was, why on earth would I fight someone who doesn't want to employ me? So, we negotiated a cheque and I wandered on my way. Fast forward 25-odd years and the scenario is slightly different. TVNZ is in a world of financial pain, and they need to do something about it. And that's the key to all this. They will do something about it, because they can't afford not to. The fact they didn't, according to the bloke at the tribunal was because they failed on one of the myriad of clauses in what is clearly a fairly complex collective agreement, doesn't actually mean anything changes. All that's happened is they will go back to the boardroom, meeting room, whatever room they yack about these things in, and re-litigate what has already been litigated. The people involved get nothing other than more pain and a delayed inevitability and that's before you get to the irony that the two programmes at the centre of this, Fair Go and Sunday, have finished this week anyway. This has played out the way it has because unions need to be seen to be doing something. This was a move by the unions to make the unions look like it might be worth you paying your sub. The warning, I would have thought, is it was driven by Michael "light rail" Wood, who has taken his inability to do a lot productive at national-political level and channelled it back into industrial scraps with tribunals. None of this helps anyone. At the end of the day, business is business and if the business is in trouble, which it is, miracles, bright ideas and concessions are dealt with very early on in the process. No business sets out to do what TVNZ has done because they are bored, or devoid of tapping into all possible ideas. We are at the end of the line. As they got to that line they erred, according to the adjudicator of erring. Michael Wood might feel it's a win, but then Michael Wood has a job. Let's see how many of those he saves by delaying the inevitable. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Interview with Michael Wood, Executive Chairman of Sendero Resources Corp.Recording date: 2nd May 2024Sendero Resources (TSXV:SEND) is a junior exploration company advancing the highly prospective Peñas Negras copper-gold-PGE project in the world-class Vicuña mining district of Argentina. The company's maiden drill program intersected a telescoped high-sulfidation epithermal system in a lithocap environment, a geological setting known to host major deposits in the region. This type of system often features bonanza-grade feeder zones that can dramatically enhance the scale and economics of a deposit.Sendero's experienced technical team, led by CEO Hernan Vera, has identified compelling drill targets to explore for these high-grade zones. Two large magnetic anomalies in the middle of the lithocap could represent the mineralized porphyry intrusions that fed the system. The company also plans to test the base of the lithocap, where sizable mineralization suggests a large underlying copper porphyry deposit may be hiding.Importantly, these targets start at just 150 m from surface, enabling cost-effective drilling to potentially deliver a game-changing discovery. With a dominant 211 sq km land position in the heart of the Vicuña district and a strong in-country team, Sendero is well-positioned to unlock the project's value. The company is currently assessing funding options for a larger drill campaign starting in October, including strategic investments or JV partnerships. Argentina's pro-mining political environment, coupled with strong community support, bodes well for advancing the project. For investors, Sendero offers speculative exposure to a potential major copper-gold discovery in a district that has delivered multiple Tier 1 deposits in recent years. If the company can delineate a significant high-grade resource, the stock could offer substantial upside from current levels. Upcoming drill results and financing updates will be key catalysts to watch in the months ahead.View Sendero Resources' company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/sendero-resourcesSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Did the foundational event of Proust's great novel really happen? Michael Wood talks to Tom about several English translations of In Search of Lost Time, old and new, and the ways in which they question what the novel does. If the dipping of the madeleine in his tea conjures an overwhelming memory of the narrator's childhood, it is also a challenge to the conscious mind, a product of chance that Proust suggests might easily not have occurred at all. Michael unpicks the implications of this, and argues that the self-reflexive qualities associated with modernist fiction have been common throughout the history of the novel.Find more by Michael on Proust here: lrb.me/woodproustpodSign up to Close Readings Plus: lrb.me/plus Hosted on Acast.
