Western Australia's Ombudsman has opened an independent investigation into whether police responded appropriately to Virginia Giuffre before her death in April 2025. The inquiry follows a formal request from Giuffre's brothers, Sky Roberts and Danny Wilson, and their wives, who questioned how officers handled her domestic-violence allegations against her husband, Robert Giuffre. The family specifically wants the watchdog to examine whether her complaint was properly investigated, whether adequate risk assessments were conducted, how concerns involving firearms were addressed and whether broader systemic failures left her without sufficient protection.The investigation comes alongside an internal WA Police review of officers' interactions with Giuffre. Her family said Robert Giuffre received a temporary 72-hour police order following an alleged assault in January 2025, but was not charged and later obtained a restraining order against Virginia that included their two youngest children. The family believes the combined effects of alleged abuse, separation from her children and failures by authorities contributed to her suicide. A Ministry of Health investigation into alleged torture and potential human rights abuses at a Dunedin forensic facility for people with intellectual disabilities could take months. And what builds that trust is not whether you win or lose your case, but how you were treated along the way — whether you were heard, treated with respect, and felt the process was fair. This is the idea of procedural justice, and it has both a decision-making side (voice, neutrality, consistency) and a relational side (dignity, sincerity, genuine attention to people's concerns). The conversation ranges across criminal justice, civil and administrative law, prisons, and policing, including how police officers who feel fairly treated by their own superiors go on to treat the public more fairly. Tyler explains why a system built on fear requires policing forever, while one built on trust makes communities stronger: people cooperate, testify, engage with their neighbours, and invest in where they live.
