Audience Attitudes to Harmful and Offensive Media Content Are Changing

Irish Tech News Audio Articles

New research has highlighted Irish audiences' evolving attitudes to harmful and offensive media content, with two-in-three adults (67%) reporting that they did not have concerns about seeing or hearing potentially harmful or offensive media content themselves. However, among adults who are parents, a majority (52%) were concerned. The research on Audience Perspectives on Harmful and Offensive Media Content was conducted by Coimisiún na Meán and the Irish Film Classification Office (IFCO), with the Ombudsman for Children's Office designing and facilitating the focus groups for children. This research examines the attitudes of adults and children to content on television, radio, cinema, home entertainment and video-on-demand services. It also looks at their perspectives regarding the regulation of such content. The research consisted of a desk-based review, a nationally representative survey of adults and focus group discussions with adults and children. Speaking on the launch of the research, Aoife MacEvilly, Coimisiún na Meán Broadcasting and Video-on-Demand Commissioner, said: "We at Coimisiún na Meán are committed to ensuring that audiences, especially children, can benefit from the positive aspects of media, while also being protected from its potential harms. Central to this ambition is ensuring that Irish audiences, especially children, can engage safely with content that is age-appropriate for them. The research report that we are launching today provides crucial insights into how Irish people consume media - whether broadcast, on-demand, at home or in cinemas - and gives us a strong evidence base regarding their attitudes to regulation, which will inform future updates to our Media Services Codes and Rules. I want to extend my thanks to the Coimisiún na Meán Research team, the Irish Film Classification Office (IFCO), the Ombudsman for Children's Office and all those who participated in the research who have contributed their time, views and expertise in developing this research report.'' While most adults are unconcerned about encountering potentially harmful or offensive media content, most parents report feeling 'very concerned' about younger children (12 years and under) viewing/listening to content that includes dangerous or harmful behaviours (74%), sexual themes and nudity (74%), or violence (66%). Parents are less concerned about younger children encountering strong language (44%). Parents are generally less concerned about teens encountering potentially harmful or offensive content. Indeed, they consider that some adult content may be appropriate for older children, if it is consensual, its portrayal is healthy and realistic, and it could help educate their children. Parents take comfort in knowing that there are regulated spaces that adhere to certain standards, and from the parental controls and child settings that come with some subscription video-on-demand services. Child participants highlighted some practical improvements that could be made to such features, including the use of voice control or fingerprint access. While teen participants generally considered it appropriate that parents should monitor content for younger children, many considered that the balance should shift towards greater self-monitoring as children mature. Moreover, many confirmed that they do indeed self-monitor their content consumption, On media types, adults report greatest concern about harmful and offensive content on Reality TV (49%), followed by Drama/Fiction (31%), Factual programming (27%) and Light entertainment (25%). Dr Ciarán Kissane, Director of Film Classification at the Irish Film Classification Office (IFCO), said: "This research presents valuable insights into children's and adults' views in relation to media content across all the main platforms in the post-COVID era. It specifically addresses the content categories that IFCO uses to provide guidance to Irish audiences. The research has already informed IFCO's re...

“What about us?” Sherry Gay-Dagnogo asks, cutting straight to the bone as she joins Khary Frazier to chart how Detroit's past battles shape tomorrow's wins for Legacy Black Detroit. In a conversation braided with urgency and receipts, Sherry salutes community media—“Education is key and your platform provides that”—then lays out why she's seeking Detroit's Ombudsman post: a 10-year, people-first watchdog who can “scale excellent service” across city departments and build real partnership with DPSCD. She refuses business-as-usual politics: “African Americans have been the backbone of the Democratic Party,” yet too often policy priorities like CVI, juvenile lifer reform, police accountability, and fair auto insurance are stalled while candidates chase culture clout—“through rappers”—instead of respecting the 92% of Black women who show up. She revisits the redistricting fight she led—“we deserve African-American representation”—and the unanimous court ruling that followed, tying it to a longer arc of emergency management, EAA missteps, and school closures that hollowed neighborhoods. From bus routes to literacy, from Brightmoor to Birmingham lines drawn wrong, she calls for audacious leadership rooted in elders like Coleman Young and JoAnn Watson: “Justice will always ultimately prevail—but only if we demand it.” This is Detroit memory and muscle, a blueprint for accountability that insists our institutions serve the people who built them. Rhetorical question - why do you think Neil Quigley quit on a Friday night? The key is, he would have been booted if he didn't walk. So it sort of ends a shambolic and shameful period for what should be one of our most esteemed institutions. Between Orr and Quigley (mainly Orr) they have made a joke of the Reserve Bank. What should have happened is simple. When the Government decided, rightly, that the gargantuan amount of money Orr wanted to run his fiefdom was never going to fly Orr should have, in an adult way, stated he disagreed and he disagreed to the point he could not see himself continuing in the job. He would then resign, they would organise a nice, but frugal, farewell morning tea and that would have been that. But what actually happened was Orr chucked his toys, yelled and stamped his feet to the extent that Quigley had to write to Orr. All this was also kept secret until the Official Information Act and the Ombudsman forced their hand and exposed them for the bunch of egotistical babies they are. Quigley was yelling at Treasury, Orr was yelling at Willis, deals were looking to be done, letters and proof was looking to be binned and cheques were being written to make it all go away. Lest we forget, in an irony of ironies, this is the same group of clowns who buried the economy in the hole we are still trying to get ourselves out of years after Covid. So they couldn't do their job, they stuffed the place, then packed a massive sad when their rain shower of funding was getting rectified, started a big tantrum and scrap with various departments and ministers, then tried to cover it all up. Have I missed anything? Oh, Orr vanished with the money, never to be heard from again. To his credit Quigley hung around and made a few public appearances while trying to paint a picture of normality, until the Ombudsman undid him last week and that was that. They really are an embarrassing, shambolic mess. On a side note, it's also why I assume Christian Hawkesby stands zero chance of getting Orr's old job. He is fatally linked to this period of mayhem. We'd be glad to see the back of them, if it wasn't for the fact we are still trying to clean up the mess and every one of us is paying the bill. Nick is joined at York's Ebor meeting on day two by ITV's Oli Bell. Nick and Oli look back on yesterday's action including the tense Juddmonte International, which looked at one point like it might be a repeat of the Sussex but Ombudsman ran the pacemaker down late on to win well. John Gosden gives his reaction to the race and the ride whilst Ralph Beckett discusses future targets for Voltigeur winner Pride of Arras. York's Phil Atkinson is along to look forward to the Queen's visit this afternoon and all the protocols that go on behind the scenes ahead of such an event. Khadijah Mellah joins via FaceTime to look ahead to her first ride under rules at Goodwood tomorrow and Richard Hughes also reflects on Star of Mehmas's victory whilst giving a strong shout for his Lowther contender this afternoon. Finally, we end the show with a bit of wine and cheese, much to the delight of cheese lover Oli!

Join us from Royal Ascot on day 3 as Nick is joined by Charlotte Greenway on course, this time from the pre parade ring. They begin by reflecting the action from day 2 and Ombudsman's performance in the Prince of Wales's Stakes and David Johnson of Timeform discusses what sort of figure he might earn. Adam Mills of Total Performance Data also looks at whether the two Ballydoyle horses went too quick on the front end, ruining there chances after the first couple of furlongs. Eve Johnson Haughton very kindly joins us via FaceTime after yesterday's emotional success in the Windsor Castle Stakes and thinks she has a Group 3 filly running in a handicap tomorrow. Then Nick and Charlotte move onto today's racing and look at the Gold Cup and whether Trawlerman can capitalise on the absence of Kyprios whilst we also hear from Orlando at Fitzdares on the betting for day 3's feature. Of course, Lisa Tan has the latest fashion tips and Grainne Hurst, CEO of the betting and gaming council on the charity ascent if the Britannia Stakes, run this afternoon.
