As Donald Trump's historic tariffs trigger a global trade war, two former leaders join the show to discuss what this means for their countries and the world: Sanna Marin was Prime Minister of Finland-- she knows the threat posed by Russia all too well; and Juan Manuel Santos, the former president of Colombia, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2016 for his role in bringing the country's decades long conflict to an end. Also on today's show: actors Tom Basden and Tim Key on the new feel-good film "The Ballad of Wallis Island"; former US Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel Learn more about your ad choices. Earlier this month, Justin Trudeau resigned as Canada’s Prime Minister, marking the end of his nine years in office. Trudeau was also one of the last leaders standing from an era of younger, left-leaning or liberal politicians, alongside the likes of Finland’s Sanna Marin and our own Jacinda Ardern, who garnered global attention for bringing a fresher approach to politics. That era seems well and truly over. Last year, more than 60 countries went to the polls, and many countries saw voters swing to the right, or voting against incumbent governments rather than necessarily voting in favour of their opposition. Peter Frankopan is an author and professor of global history at Oxford University, and joined us on The Front Page last year to preview ‘the year of elections’. He joins us today on The Front Page to discuss the shifting sands of global politics. Follow The Front Page on iHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.
Neuvostoliiton ja Venäjän hallitsijoista on kirjoitettu tänä vuonna kaksi verevää ja vetävää romaania. Sanna Marinista tehty viihteellinen podcast on ollut hitti Yle Areenassa. Pirkko Saisio kirjoittaa romaanissaan Suliko (Siltala, 2024) Josif Stalinin tien maailmanparantajasta julmaksi despootiksi ja miljoonien murhaajaksi. Nina Honkanen kirjoittaa romaanissaan Rakkaani, Vladimir (Into, 2024) itänaapurimme johtajasta fiktiivisen rakkaustarinan kautta. Miira Karhulan, Risto Karhulan, Johanna Hartikaisen ja Simo Ritarin käsikirjoittama Sanna Marin ーmiljoonat seuraa -podcast (Yle, 2024) kertoo Marinin noususta pääministeriksi, ottaen myös taiteellisia vapauksia.
Onko turismi ajautumassa umpikujaan? Tällä viikolla vietettiin YK:n päivää, järjestö täyttää 79 vuotta. Sen uudistamisesta erityisesti turvallisuusneuvoston osalta on keskusteltu vuosikausia. Viiden pysyvän jäsenmaan veto-oikeus on "tehokkaasti" estänyt humanitaarisen Intervention kriisitilanteissa. Muodin uusi trendi on “Old money”. Nuoret matkivat pukeutumisellaan vanhaa USA:n itärannikon yläluokan ja Harvard-porukan tyyliä. Onko tämä konservatiivisuutta vai ironiaa?
Sanna Marin Poikkeuksellinen pääministeri Salla Vuorikoski #neuvottelija 278. Yksi vastaus on kriisit. Politiikkaradio pui entisen pääministerin Sanna Marinin (sd.) muodonmuutosta. Mikä on hänen perintönsä? Toimittajana on Antti Pilke.
Perussuomalaiset haluavat kumittaa lukion yhteiskuntaopin kirjasta itseään koskevan kuvauksen populistipuolueena. Pitäisikö kaikkien poliittisten puolueiden saada itse määrätä, miten heistä oppikirjoista kirjoitetaan? Oliko kuvailu puolueellinen? Espoossa puolestaan on otettu käyttöön pelkästään naisille tarkoitetut uimahallivuorot. Kyseessä on kädenojennus maahanmuuttajanaisille, mutta onko asiassa periaatteellisia ongelmia? Etelä-korealainen Han Kang sai torstaina Nobelin kirjallisuuspalkinnon. Ville Talola toimittaa.
HOX UUSINTAJULKAISU KOSKA ATK POX.
Bokklubb deluxe!
Kysymys on kuulunut, miten Euroopassa suhtaudutaan Suomen presidentinvaaleihin. Sanna Marin -innostuksen jälkeen on palattu arkeen. Pikku-uutisia lukuun ottamatta Suomen vaaleista ei puhuta. Tulevan presidentin työtä on edustaa Suomea maailmalla.

Sanna Marin, Former Prime Minister of Finland
In a decade that has already faced unprecedented economic, health, and environmental crises, there's never been a more important time for progressives leaders to be coming together to share bold new ideas for building a better future. In this featured session of the 2023 Global Progress Action Summit, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Jonas Gahr Støre (Prime Minister of Norway), Jacinda Ardern (former Prime Minister of New Zealand ), and Sanna Marin (former Finnish Prime Minister) speak about the challenges and opportunities of progressive leadership with Supriya Dwivedi (Director of Policy and Engagement at McGill's Centre for Media, Technology and Democracy). This conversation took place on September 16, 2023, at the 2023 Global Progress Action Summit in Montréal hosted by Canada 2020 and CAP Action. It has been lightly edited for clarity.
The humiliation rituals of the Cultural Revolution and its spiritual significance None of this is supposed to make sense. None of it is supposed to help. All of it is designed as Humiliation Rituals for the Cultural Revolution because breaking brains is easier than outright war. Know the techniques, take them captive to Christ and remain in victory. Today we're talking about the weapon we seem to talk about after every mass shooting in the United States: the AR-15. The AR-15 is the most popular rifle on the consumer market. An estimated 1 in 20 American adults owns at least one. But, it wasn't always this way. In fact, the AR-15's rise in popularity is pretty recent, and when the gun first became available to consumers, it was something of a black sheep. On the show today, Washington Post reporter Todd Frankel walks us through how the AR-15 went from military weapon to consumer product, the marketing that boosted its appeal and what the AR-15 signifies to a country plagued by gun violence. In the News Fix: Finland is the newest member of NATO. We'll get into what that means for Russia's war in Ukraine. And, some news you can use: There are significant delays for passport processing at the State Department. If you're planning an international trip, renew your passport ASAP! Later, one listener shares a piece of trivia about cherry blossom trees in Tokyo. Plus, another listener sent us a stunning photo of cherry blossoms in Seattle. And, this week’s answer to the Make Me Smart question comes from NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman, commander of the Artemis II mission to the moon. Here’s everything we talked about today: “How the AR-15 became a powerful political, cultural symbol in America” from The Washington Post “Analysis | Decades of marketing reinvented the AR-15 into a top-selling firearm” from The Washington Post “Nashville attack renews calls for assault weapons ban – data shows there were fewer mass shooting deaths during an earlier 10-year prohibition” from The Conversation “The Rifle That Ruined America” from The Atlantic “Hoping to Travel Abroad? Don't Put Off Your Passport Application.” from The New York Times “Passport Processing Times Just Increased Due to Summer Travel Demand” from Thrillist “Finland joins NATO in major blow to Russia over Ukraine war” from AP News “Why did Sanna Marin lose Finland's election?” from The Guardian What have you been wrong about lately? We want to hear it. Leave us a voice message at 508-U-B-SMART, and your submission may be featured in a future episode.

Finland, a sparsely populated and famously “happy” country, has joined NATO, puncturing Vladimir Putin's excuse for invading Ukraine. On top of this, big little Finland elects a govt of the centre-right, defeating socialist Sanna Marin. Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta explains some interesting recent developments in Finland, in Ep 1205 of Cut The Clutter.
After all the speculation about the shape of Humza Yousaf's Cabinet it's here.We discuss who's in, who's out and the potential for rebellion from the Gang of 15, maybe 18, Kate Forbes supporting MSPs.We also take a closer look at the Green tail wagging the SNP dog narrative.Battle lines are being drawn up and strategies developed for the next General Election. How will all the parties play it? Tacit Tory and Labour agreements? And what about the SNP in light of a probable Labour victory?Sanna Marin's Social Democrats came a narrow third in the recent Finnish elections. Lesley examines this result, its implications, and Finland becoming a member of NATO.And we can't let Donald Trump being charged with falsifying business records and facing trial over his hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels just before the 2016 election go unmentioned. If you were intrigued by the two events at the Edinburgh Science Festival Lesley spoke about here are the linksWednesday April 5th at 6pmhttps://www.sciencefestival.co.uk/event-details/the-seaweed-revolutionFriday 14th April at 6pmhttps://www.sciencefestival.co.uk/event-details/how-to-save-a-planet-in-crisis ★ Support this podcast ★
