    Hi friends! I know I have been mentioning this interview for a while now, and we were finally able to make it happen! My very special guest today is Dr. Laurie Mintz, Ph.D. Dr. Laurie is a college professor at the University of Florida who teaches the psychology of human sexuality and has over twenty years of experience working with private clients on general and sexual issues. She has also published more than fifty research studies, has written two books (Becoming Cliterate, and A Tired Woman's Guide to Passionate Sex), is a speaker (including a fabulous TedTalk which is linked below), and even writes a popular blog on Psychology Today. She is also a Taurus! I have read her book Becoming Cliterate numerous times now, so narrowing down what questions I wanted to ask and share with you was pretty difficult, but I know you are going to take so many great things away from our conversation today!     Polyvagal Theory

    I actually learned about the Polyvagal Theory in Dr. Nicole LePera's book, "How to do the work", and it just clicked. I remember learning about the nervous system in school, but we really didnt discuss in depth what it looks like when it's dysregulated.  I have had a lot of stuff going on in my life this year, and learning about this helped me to understand what this feeling I had was, and how I can try to get my nervous system back to homeostasis, but also tone my vagal nerve. I have used a lot of Dr. LePera's work in this episode, as well as some other research I have done.  I would highly suggest reading her book, along with Dr. Stephen Porges book, "Polyvagal Theory", and "The Body Keeps the Score" by Bessel van der Kolk.  Let's go on ahead and hop on to it!     The attachment bond we have with our caregivers growing up is not only a preview of what our relationships will look like, but also the relationship we have with ourselves. I remember learning about this back when I was in school (originally majored in psych, then minored), but I don't think I understood the weight it could hold in understanding some of the patterns I have been more cognizant of recently. This is exactly why I wanted to share this information with you. Maybe this might open your eyes to something you have never thought of or maybe just glanced over. I strongly believe knowledge is power. I would also recommend, if this does resonate with you, to seek help from a licensed therapist.     Thoughts, Feelings, and Emotions

    Mental health is something of utmost importance to me. As you can probably tell, a lot of my episodes are related to things that I am personally working through. The reason I do this, the reason I share my own experiences and opinions is because I hope to allow the listeners to relate, to feel validated, to feel less alone in their struggles. I like to shine light on things that most of us don't really talk about, at least not outside of closed therapy doors. I just wanted to note, in case it isn't obvious, I am not a therapist or a doctor. So please, listen and take what you need and leave what you don't. The words thoughts and emotions are something I have struggled with separating from each other. When it comes to how we talk to ourselves, and how we respond to our thoughts and the emotions that come along with our thoughts, I feel it is imperative that we know the difference.
