Discover the transformative journey of our inspiring guest, Lauren Ornelas, who has been an unwavering advocate for veganism and social justice since childhood. Growing up in Texas, their initial empathy for cows sparked a lifelong commitment to vegetarianism, eventually evolving into full veganism after a life-changing speech by an ex-vivisector. Lauren's deep-rooted involvement in social justice movements, such as the anti-apartheid initiative, set the stage for the creation of the Food Empowerment Project, an organization dedicated to tackling the interlinked issues of human rights, animal rights, and environmental sustainability. Throughout this episode, we unpack the founding and mission of the Food Empowerment Project, exploring how it champions animal rights, farmworker justice, and the fight against child labor in the chocolate industry. Our guest shares candid reflections on the hurdles faced within the vegan movement, particularly the initial resistance to a more comprehensive focus. However, there's a silver lining as younger generations progressively grasp these interconnected issues. We also delve into the guest's early activism in high school and college, where they encountered both support and challenges, and highlight the pivotal role of Viva USA in shaping their advocacy journey. As the conversation unfolds, we confront common misconceptions about veganism and discuss how ethical eating supports collective liberation. Our guest recalls the grassroots beginnings of the Food Empowerment Project, emphasizing the critical input from communities and the development of resources like a chocolate list and app to aid ethical consumption. Moreover, we touch on the essential practice of self-care in activism, underscoring the importance of balance and support systems in sustaining long-term advocacy efforts. Join us for an episode rich with stories of resilience, interconnected activism, and actionable insights for living a compassionate life. Guest Bio: Lauren Ornelas has been a deeply involved animal rights activist since 1987 and is the founder and General Programs Collective Member of Food Empowerment Project (F.E.P.), a vegan food justice nonprofit that promotes veganism, champions the rights of farm workers, highlights the lack of access to healthy foods in Black and Brown communities, and raise awareness about the worst forms of slavery, including child labor, in the chocolate industry. Soul food has its roots in the culinary traditions of Black Americans and African diaspora communities in the southern United States, and it plays a crucial role in preserving Black history. But given the impact of racism and colonialism in the US food system on Black people, what should soul food look like today? In this week's episode, Rev. Dr. Christopher Carter joins Melanie and Evanna to talk about his book The Spirit of Soul Food: Race, Faith, & Food Justice, which unpacks the connections between food injustice and racial injustice. They discuss how decolonizing soul food offers a way to reclaim culinary history and human dignity for Black communities; the importance of advocating for a more equitable food system and future while upholding the values of compassion, love, justice, and solidarity for the marginalized; and what a movement toward Black food sovereignty might look like. Rev. Dr. Christopher Carter's research, teaching, and activist interests are in Black, womanist, and environmental ethics, with a particular focus on race, food, and nonhuman animals. His publications include The Spirit of Soul Food: Race, Faith, & Food Justice; “Blood in the Soil: The Racial, Racist, and Religious Dimensions of Environmentalism,” in The Bloomsbury Handbook of Religion and Nature; and the coedited volume The Future of Meat without Animals. In them, he explores the intersectional oppressions experienced by BIPOC, nonhuman nature, and animals. He's an Associate Professor of Theology at the University of San Diego and Lead Pastor of The Loft at Westwood United Methodist Church. He's also on the board of directors of Farm Forward, an anti-factory farming nonprofit. Evanna mentions The Food Empowerment Project's Chocolate List. Christopher mentions the book Afroism by Aph and Syl Ko. Visit Christopher's website and check out his book "The Spirit of Soul Food: Race, Faith, & Food Justice". In our first show back for 2023 we talk about some popular Go Vegan campaigns such as Veganuary that encourage people to try adopting a vegan diet for 30 days and provide email support resources and cookbooks. We discuss whether these campaigns can frame veganism as a diet through the focus on food and miss the broader ethical considerations of animal liberation, or are they a critical first step for vegan curious people who are searching for information and the support that will help them make the transition. Sam and Emma host writer Jacob Silverman to discuss his recent piece in the New Republic "The Quiet Political Rise of David Sacks, Silicon Valley's Prophet of Urban Doom". Then they are joined by Lauren Ornelas, founder and president of the Food Empowerment Project, to discuss the recent union busting tactics and worker mistreatment that's been occurring at Amy's Kitchen. Emma and Sam first run through updates on recent midterm debates, diving deep into yesterday's Senatorial Debate between Oz and Fetterman, exploring Fetterman's success in getting his message out there despite lingering effects from his stroke, and Dr. Oz's insistence on letting him and other local representatives into your check-ups at the doctor. Jacob Silverman then joins as he dives right into the story of David Sacks, beginning with his time getting to know Peter Thiel at Stanford and co-writing “The Diversity Myth,” a generally bigoted work on 1990s culture wars, before moving alongside Thiel to become COO of Paypal, a core member of the original “Paypal Mafia.” After touching on the reactionary nature of the Diversity Myth and the general ideology of the Paypal crew, Emma, Sam, and Jacob walk through Sacks' post-Paypal conquest of the tech- and culture worlds, and how it led him to the founding of Callin podcasting platform, putting him at the top of a cultural organization that centers reactionary thinking. Then, Lauren Ornelas joins as she walks through the story of her work with Amy's Kitchen from the consumption side, and how this corporation leaving behind its cooperative roots diminished the relationships that had supported its work to this point. They wrap up by parsing through the Food Empowerment Project's response to Amy's continued union-busting, and exploring what the MR audience can do to both help the organizers behind the effort and to push Amy's towards decent workplace treatment. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma express their pessimism at the coming midterms, Celeste from Portland dives into Joe Kent's recent fiasco over claiming to be paid by companies that simply don't exist. They also watch Alito prepare to undermine repercussions for the Dobbs leak, Blake Masters and Trump call out Peter Thiel, and the crew dives into the incredible success of Houston's homelessness policy. They also tackle the parallels between the development of islamophobia in the US and the conservative movement towards transphobia, before talking with some PA voters and narrowly avoiding a libertarian debate, plus, your calls and IMs! Our guest this week is the founder and president of Food Empowerment Project, lauren Ornelas. An animal rights activist of over 30 years, we talk to lauren about F.E.P.'s mission to create a more just and sustainable world by recognizing the power of one's food choices. In addition, lauren takes us through her beginnings as an activist, why she founded F.E.P. and why her activism doesn't stop at veganism. Also in this episode… lauren talks about the culinary trials and tribulations of going vegan in the 1980s. Seriously folks, we don't realise how good we've got it! “I find college [activism] organisations to be some of the most impactful organisations that are out there” - lauren tells us about her earliest experiences as an activist in high school and college. lauren shares her experiences as an undercover activist working with the animal rights charity Viva! USA. lauren talks about her frustration with the animal rights movement not working diligently enough on human rights issues that led her to founding Food Empowerment Project. “We need to make sure we're not acting self-righteous when our food might be coming from unjust systems as well.” lauren discusses the brutal working conditions in the cacao industry and why, in her opinion, many vegan chocolate companies are not truly vegan. lauren explains F.E.P.'s thorough process for ensuring vegan chocolate companies are not using slave labour. Is veganism a privilege or a moral obligation? “Veganism has given me every purpose I've ever had in my life” Tylor is shocked to learn about a company that is enforcing a food apartheid in a community he knows very well. lauren gives us an example of a vegan phrase that should be retired and tells us why. The B-Crew takes a ride down the Freeway with Reese Witherspoon and Kiefer Sutherland! We’re facing off against this Big Bad Wolf of a movie as we kill our way along to Grandmothers House on the FREEWAY!! The name of the movie is FREEWAY…and there’s some Little Red Riding Hood analogy throughout…we don’t know why, but we’ll get into that….In this twisted take on "Little Red Riding Hood", Vanessa played by REESE WITHERSPOON plays a teenage juvenile delinquent on the run to grandmother’s house. She runs into a social worker, Bob Wolverton played by (KEIFER SUTHERLAND) who also happens to a charming, but sadistic, serial killer and pedophile. (The character not Kiefer). In her travels she ends up in jail, goes to trial for shooting Bob Wolverton (See, his name is Wolverton, so he’s the big bad wolf…anyway) and finally, Vanessa escapes jail to go to Grandma’s House for the big climatic finish to this…this..um…movie?This month, we’re supporting the Food Empowerment Project whose mission includes among other things, food availability and access in communities of color and low-income areas. On Episode 294 of the Mama Bear Dares Podcast, Tesi and Leslie revisit their conversation with Lauren Ornelas, the founder of the Food Empowerment Project, an organization that seeks to create a more just and sustainable world by recognizing the power of one’s food choices. I am in conversation with Lauren Ornelas the founder and director of Food Empowerment Project a food justice nonprofit working at the intersection of veganism, farm and produce worker rights and accessibility, nutrition and health. COVID19 has simultaneously caused disruptions to the food system and brought to fore the labour force that is truly essential to our economies in addition to medical practitioners. Farmers, producers, growers, grocery store owners and assistants, food delivery people and many more in the supply chains are working day and night for meagre returns and virtually no safety net. How do we acknowledge their labour in a way that goes beyond applause on our windows at a premeditated time? Then there’s the issue of what we eat. On the other hand though awareness of plant-based diets is increasing year on year many are still not able to extend their empathy for nonhuman animals to human beings who are for instance migrant workers from BIPOC communities experiencing issues such as wage theft in the US or farmers in India protesting against the new agricultural reforms to maintain the minimum support price system amongst other historic issues of debt and financial stress. So how do we go beyond focusing on individual behaviour of swapping our meat for micro greens and rallying for food justice and equity holistically? lauren Ornelas has been active in the animal rights movement for over 30 years, creating the Food Empowerment Project in 2007. FEP's mission is to create a more just and sustainable world for everyone, by recognizing the power of our food choices. But lauren and her colleagues also realize that it's not so easy for everyone to simply choose healthy vegan products, depending on things like how much money we earn, and where we live. lauren talks about the ways oppression and injustice affects all beings, and why vegans must extend our circle of compassion to understand the challenges that some of our neighbours might be faced with when they make their food choices. Lauren Ornelas is the founder and the executive director of the Food Empowerment Project, a nonprofit food justice organization that spotlights the abuse of animals on farms, unfair working conditions for produce workers, and the unavailability of healthy foods in communities of color and low-income areas. She and I spoke earlier in the pandemic. She had just written an article on Medium called, We Are All Connected. It was written back in April, but it could not be more relevant now, with the demonstrations in our streets calling out systemic racism. “As many of us know, COVID-19 has just proven what we know: that racism and inequalities that exist for Black, Indigenous, and Brown people in this country are a barrier to success and living healthy lives. Our communities have been losing lives due to police violence, lack of health care, lack of healthy food, lack of clean drinking water, environmental racism, lack of living wages, and the list goes on; however, what makes COVID-19 even more dangerous is that these problems still exist and in some ways are exacerbated.” – Lauren Ornelas, We Are All Connected Lauren has spent her entire life on the front lines fighting for human and animal rights. She went vegan and became an activist in the 80s, later she founded and ran the animal right’s organization, Viva USA, and in 2007, she started The Food Empowerment Project, an organization that operates from the understanding that we are indeed all connected, humans, animals, and the planet and thus, it only makes sense to fight for the whole package. Later, in that same Medium piece, she writes, “…but I am more determined than ever that we must truly fight the systems that have a role in how we got here.” And that is exactly what Lauren and the Food Empowerment Project are doing.

In this episode, we hear from lauren, from the Food Empowerment Project. lauren explains how food justice is central to FEP’s advocacy for social justice for both human and nonhuman animals. We hear about some of the initiatives taking place, including the chocolate list – and how a plantbased diet doesn’t necessarily equal an ethical one. Trigger Warning: Disordered Eating Topic We are back from a mid-season break! Expect episodes weekly going forward! Today’s guest is Gloria Lucas, founder of Nalgona Positivity Pride! We talk today about what Nalgona Positivity Pride is, why it started, disordered eating, the diet culture, what body positivity means, historical trauma with disordered eating, the history of native foods along with the colonization and shame of those foods, techniques for loving your body and much more! Gloria Lucas talks to us about some points! She is a Xicana womxn from California and founded Nalgona Positivity Pride (NPP) in 2014 after years of dealing with the lack of women of color representation in the eating disorder awareness community. Like the womxn of color that came before, she creates spaces for marginalized folks to support each other and heal from the trauma of colonialism, eurocentric beauty ideals, and disordered eating in communities of color. NPP lectures, hosts events, offers business consultation, hosts support groups, and creates social media content as a way to reach out to and empowers the individuals whose bodies are systematically at the margins of white/ mainstream ‘body positivity’ movements.
