Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk joined the show. The conversation started with Christmas cookies before it shifted to the Philip Rivers signing in Indianapolis. The 44-year-old was apparently always the backup plan in Indy if things went south with QB health, which it has after the Daniel Jones season-ending injury. If the Colts still make the playoffs and Rivers plays respectable football, should he win the Comeback Player of the Year award? Mike said there's no way you can go back and act like the chants and boos didn't happen in the game against the Bills. What if things go off the rails against the Dolphins? Mike said if Art Rooney is in some state of delusion, that's not good for anybody. Mike believes you always have to have your finger on the pulse of the fanbase as an owner. The guys asked Mike about the catch rule and determining how the game ended in Baltimore on Sunday. Mike believes that Isaiah Likely play was a touchdown that the league missed and that the offices have gone a little rogue, which only confuses the viewer more. Mike dove into the gambling factor and is surprised Roger Goodell didn't resign once they got into bed with all of the sportsbooks.
A big question in the direction of Art Rooney II made its way to the Gerry Dulac chat. The answer gave us another example of the owner leaning back on the organization being better than the mean of the league. Does he hear the fans growing tired? Maybe. But Gerry gave a pretty good guess as to how Art would answer things – telling fans to get off their backs because they are in first place, just in nicer words. Does he make a point? The guys think the team is still stale and the owner should show more emotion more than just simply wanting them to win more than they lose, on average. It sounds like Art would puff his chest out because the Steelers have been in first place since the beginning of the season – which is factually incorrect. The guys pointed out some of the better teams in the league that are better than the Steelers, but they aren't leading their own division. The Fan vs The Fans. Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk joined the show. Mike said something just feels different this time with the Steelers in regards to Mike Tomlin being back next season. He referenced the times changing a bit and them going about their business differently the last few years in the off-season. Mike said the Steelers are stuck in a rut with a lot of people making a lot of money. Mike thinks Art Rooney II will sit back on this until he starts noticing more and more empty seats in the stadium because that means dollars lost. He said if he was a season-ticket holder, he would not attend the next home game (MNF 12/15 vs MIA) if they lose in an ugly way to the Ravens on Sunday. Mike thinks it's a complicated reality with coaches thinking about the greener pastures that could be out there. Could Mike see Penn State making a play for Tomlin? Mike talked about the current cycle of coaches in the NFL and another reason why Tomlin might be the hottest candidate out there if he and the Steelers move on. Mike said we don't know for sure that the Giants are interested, but there is some dot-connecting being done.
Jeff Brohm is the latest college football coach to stay put instead of going to Happy Valley to become the HC at Penn State. Something else Ben Roethlisberger suggested was Mike Tomlin going to Penn State. After Tomlin was asked about coaching at the college level a few years ago, we can say pretty confidently that this won't happen. Would Tomlin want to do everything that is required to be a college coach? The guys questioned if Tomlin would be as good at recruiting as everyone assumes. James Franklin happily trolled Penn State on X after pulling in a pretty good first recruiting class at Virginia Tech. We are enjoying the fall from grace in real time from State College. In how many years with Ben Roethlisberger did Mike Tomlin make a ‘deep' run in the playoffs? Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk joined the show. After that, fantasy football expert Paul Charchian joined the show to share advice for Week 13 in the NFL. Later, Harris and Grote discussed what the Bears could look like when they get several key players back from injuries.
Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk joined the show. Did Mike have any spots in Wheeling to go out on Thanksgiving Eve back in the day? Mike still doesn't think there is much of a drop-off between Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph, if the Steelers have to sit Rodgers versus Buffalo. The guys are surprised that Rodgers would all of the sudden listen to doctors. Mike said it's not good for anyone involved with the Steelers if they miss the playoffs and it will be even worse for Mike Tomlin if they finish below .500 for the first time in his career. He compared the Steelers to the guy in his late 20's that still shows up to the high school party wearing his letterman jacket. Mike said teams are constantly monitoring Tomlin's situation with the Steelers, but how much longer would teams be lining up for him if he were to become available? Mike agreed with Colin Cowherd that Tomlin would have been fired by certain organizations around the league due to not winning a playoff game in almost 10 years. Mike reiterated his feel about the Steelers pride in having 3 coaches in 50+ years. He believes the Steelers could still net a pretty good return in a trade if they dangled Tomlin out there. Mike was trying to remember what kind of hair he had in high school. Mike goes with the white meat on Thanksgiving and isn't worried about the dryness of his turkey.
BREAKING: Aaron Rodgers did not practice today, which has his status up in the air for Sunday. Poni is going to the Penguins game tonight, but forgot to do an errand his wife asked him to complete. We heard audio from Pirates president Travis Williams getting into the team's off-season plan/moves. Given that Williams is more of the off-the-field guy, how much weight do we let these comments carry? Does Ben Cherington have what he needs to get the job done? Former MLB pitcher Matt Clement joined the show. The guys asked Matt about any spots on Thanksgiving Eve where the boys used to get after it in Butler. Matt hopes something finally comes to fruition with the Pirates off-season unlike all of the years in the past. Matt thinks this should be the best opportunity for Ben Cherington to get the job done, hopefully. Matt believes there could be a ‘Pirates tax' to attract free agents if they are in a bidding war against big market teams. Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk joined the show. In the second hour, Marshall Harris and Clay Harbor were joined by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk to discuss the latest NFL storylines, including whether ailing Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers will play against the Bears on Sunday. After that, Harris and Harbor explained how the Bears are discovering how to best use their tight end tandem of Colston Loveland and Cole Kmet. Later, they held the Halftime segment.
Aaron Rodgers talked to the media today and the guys think that is a telltale sign that he will play on Sunday. Usually, a QB won't talk to the reporters if he isn't going to play a few days later. Poni posed the question – is Mason Rudolph the best backup QB in team history? He has more wins than Charlie Batch in backup duty. We looked back at some backup QBs in Steelers lore. Poni thinks Rudolph pulling Mike Tomlin and his team out of the ground in 2023 is something that could win him some tiebreakers. Does Tommy Maddox deserve any consideration? Former MLB pitcher Matt Clement joined the show. The guys asked Matt about the Pirates off-season rumors and if the team has any shot to make a mark. Matt went through some names the Pirates should truly pursue. He thinks, even though the staff is already strong, the Pirates should look into pitchers like Ranger Suarez if his market isn't as strong as expected. Matt said the Pirates can't wait too long with Paul Skenes on their roster and they need to show urgency. Is it a good idea for the Pirates to start Konnor Griffin out of the gate in 2026? Matt insisted the Pirates will bolster their starting rotation and could make other splashes, to a smaller degree. Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk joined the show. The guys asked Mike about his card collecting days and he explained why 1976 was a big year. Mike also gave quite an interesting take on an ice cream topping. Once the talk got to football, it turned to Aaron Rodgers and if he would play in Chicago on Sunday. Mike expects Rodgers to play and that he will do everything in his power to play against the Bears one more time. Mike thinks Rodgers is aware that this could be his final season, which could make it more difficult to keep him out of games. The guys asked Mike about the tussle between Ja'Marr Chase and Jalen Ramsey on Sunday, which resulted in Ramsey's ejection and Chase's suspension. How do officials walk the fine line of punches in games?
