On his weekly Pirates mailbag video, Post-Gazette Pirates insider Noah Hiles answers reader questions. With the sudden surge in Henry Davis' game and Endy Rodriguez waiting in the wings, could Joey Bart be a potential trade chip for GM Ben Cherington? What did the Pirates see in hitting coach Matt Hague, and how is he doing so far? What does the future hold for Jared Triolo? Why are fans and many in local media so hard on Oneil Cruz when he's the Pirates' most talented player? And are Mike Burrows and Braxton Ashcraft up in the major leagues just to build trade value for Cherington to bring in a hitter? Noah tackles those topics and more.
Rain delays couldn't stop the Bucs tonight as Matt Gorski and Jared Triolo each launched two-run homers to lead the Pirates to a 4–0 win over the Mets at Citi Field. Bailey Falter danced out of early trouble, Chase Shugart held the line in relief, and the bullpen combo of Rainey, Bednar, and Santana sealed the shutout. Alexander Canario had a multi-hit night and cut down Pete Alonso trying to stretch a single in a highlight defensive moment. The NS9 crew breaks down the key performances, evaluates how Don Kelly's squad continues to respond post-swap, and asks the big question: are we finally seeing a spark? Our record predictions. The Pirates beat the Mets, avoid being swept. Matt Gorski and Jared Triolo both hit home runs. Bob thinks the Pirates should have swept the Mets.

Alexander Canario and Jared Triolo both went yard, Bailey Falter shoved through six scoreless, and the bullpen locked it down as Pittsburgh shut out Atlanta 3-2. We'll talk about Oneil Cruz's rocket single, Andrew McCutchen's clutch RBI double, and how the defense and pitching stepped up big time. Plus, we'll dig into what this performance means moving forward and how the lineup can keep building momentum. Watch the full postgame show for reactions, analysis, and fan takes on this shutout win! Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise reacts to the day in Pittsburgh sports news live around 5 p.m. Eastern. He welcomes Washington Wild Things general manager Tony Buselli to analyze the Pirates' most recent losing funk, which included a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night. Is this team fixable around stars like Paul Skenes, Oneil Cruz and Andrew McCutchen? Does manager Derek Shelton have the right answers? Or could his time in the dugout be running short? And what should general manager Ben Cherington do with struggling hitters like Tommy Pham, Jack Suwinski and Jared Triolo?
Ben Cherington thinks Jared Triolo has been better and he mentions other players who aren't making a difference. There is not one good homegrown player in the lineup. How long will the Pirates wait before they make big moves to change things? We hear from fans.
Hour 2 with Bob Pompeani and Joe Starkey: Joe Milton has been traded to the Dallas Cowboys. The Bengals are hinting at relocation as early as 2026. Good things Starkey has seen with the Pirates. Some Pirates hitters are ordering the torpedo bats. Noah Hiles of the Post-Gazette talked to Pirates players and a few are going to try them to see if it works. Jared Triolo said he sees some of the marks on his bat where he makes outs and wants to get a bat made for his swing pattern. Bob said it's like golf club design and fitting.

Pirates insider Noah Hiles analyzes a couple opening day roster decisions, leading with Endy Rodriguez making the team as both a catcher and first baseman. On their weekly podcast, host Adam Bittner and Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey react to repeated criticism of the Steelers by former RB Najee Harris. Should we be surprised at his bitterness toward Mike Tomlin, Arthur Smith and the team he leaves behind? Or is he right about the culture and facilities being an impediment toward team success? On the QB front, should GM Omar Khan really want Aaron Rodgers as his protracted decision making process shows a lack of enthusiasm for joining the team via NFL free agency? And how fractured must the relationship with Russell Wilson be that the team still won't turn to him? As March Madness begins without Pitt, Penn State and West Virginia, which program is in the best position to return next year? The worst? And what should the Penguins' goals be for the remainder of the season as their Stanley Cup playoff hopes look bleak? Our duo tackles those question, then talks Pirates. Did GM Ben Cherington bet too hard on the team's rotation amid the potentially serious injury to Jared Jones? Will the rotation led by Paul Skenes and Mitch Keller manage without him? Who are the best options to fill out the rest of the group? Veterans like Bailey Falter and Andrew Heaney? Or youngsters like Thomas Harrington, Bubba Chandler and Carmen Mlodzinski? And why is Jason bullish on the Tommy Pham signing and how he could influence young players like Henry Davis, Jared Triolo and Jack Suwinski?
Pirates Fall to Orioles 6-3 | NS9 Postgame Show The Pittsburgh Pirates dropped a spring training matchup against the Baltimore Orioles, 6-3, but there was plenty to break down from this game. Post-Gazette Pirates insider Andrew Destin recaps the team's 6-5 exhibition loss to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday as MLB spring training continues in Florida. How did pitcher Mike Burrows look in his brief outing? And is he a candidate to crack the rotation alongside names like Paul Skenes, Jared Jones and Mitch Keller? What does Jared Triolo's recent hot stream mean for his spot on the roster? And is Tim Mayza moving past some of his 2024 struggles with the New York Yankees? Andrew tackles those questions and more.
Pirates utilityman Jared Triolo joined the show. Jared won a gold glove last season and said that thing is heavy. Jared talked about how often he practices at the various positions on the field since he plays all over. The guys asked Jared about some of his early moments in the majors. Jared tried to build his all-defensive team. He said learning 1B is a lot more difficult than people think.
Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk joined the show. Mike thinks Russell Wilson would be a mistake for the Steelers in 2025, leaving Justin Fields as the better choice. Mike doesn't think the Steelers have interest in Aaron Rodgers unless he's their last option. Mike doesn't buy into the dots being connected between Wilson and the Raiders. Mike described Russ' game as a one-club golf bag and said all he has is the moon-ball. Mike doesn't think Wilson is a player that will accept a backup job. Mike is surprised by DK Metcalf requesting a trade. Mike thinks DK could be had for a 3rd or 4th round pick. The guys asked Mike about what the Falcons are going to do with Kirk Cousins. How will the new deal for Saquon Barkley impact guys like Najee Harris as they enter the open market? Mike believes Davante Adams is the best WR of the available group. The guys asked Mike how the Maxx Crosby contract will affect what the Steelers offer TJ Watt later this offseason? Mike isn't sure what the strategy is for Myles Garrett and if he stays in Cleveland. How will the Bengals make all of their financials work with the young stars on offense? Pirates utilityman Jared Triolo joined the show. Jared won a gold glove last season and said that thing is heavy. Jared talked about how often he practices at the various positions on the field since he plays all over. The guys asked Jared about some of his early moments in the majors. Jared tried to build his all-defensive team. He said learning 1B is a lot more difficult than people think. ALL ACCESS w/ Aditi – Aditi gave her latest thoughts on the Steelers QB situation. She doesn't think there is a robust market for Russell Wilson. If Justin Fields isn't in Pittsburgh, she thinks there are ‘several' teams looking for his services. Aditi said it's hard to blame a player for testing the waters, especially if it's their first chance to really do so. Aditi does think there is a QB in the draft that she thinks the Steelers would take outside of the 1st round. The guys questioned the Jalen Milroe hand size that went up significantly since the Senior Bowl. Aditi loves Nick Chubb and thinks he's the antithesis of a few guys in the Steelers locker room. Aditi can see DK Metcalf going to Vegas. Pirates catcher Joey Bart joined the show. Joey mentioned his family members that have Pittsburgh ties. Joey talked about the activities he gets into during the offseason. He described the strategy of competition bass fishing and the events he has taken part in. Joey said Kevin VanDam is the best bass fisherman of all-time. Joey said there's nothing like being in a lake with 100 other boats. Joey talked about his journey to baseball when he expected to be a football player in high school. Joey told a story about catching for Matt Capps when he was 15. Who is the one pitcher from all-time that Joey wishes he could catch? Joey told the guys about meeting and working with Barry Bonds while he was part of the Giants organization. He said Bonds was on a level of hitter that he doesn't think we will ever see again. He thinks Bonds, even at 50+ years old, would be a threat at the plate in today's game. Donny Football Debrief – We have smirking emojis from George Pickens, aka Michael Brewerly.
Post-Gazette Pirates insiders Noah Hiles and Andrew Destin discuss their key takeaways from the team's 3-2 win over the Rays on Friday afternoon at LECOM Park in Bradenton, Fla. Jared Triolo made the start at first base. How did he do, and could this become a regular thing after his Gold Glove award-winning season last year as a utilityman? David Bednar and Colin Holderman also got through their outings unscathed Friday. What did they change from last time out, and is this a good sign for the future? Plus, Braxton Ashcraft struggled in his first appearance of the spring. Is this any cause for concern? Our duo answers those questions and more.
Kevin thinks Jared Triolo could step in and start at first with Spencer Horwitz out. There have been 23 guys who have played first base since the Pirates traded Josh Bell and Rowdy Tellez is the only one to play over 100 games. The starting rotation is the main strength.
Hour 1 with Joe Starkey: Joe shares his weekend of sports and pop culture watching sports movies and documentaries. Pirates reporter Kevin Gorman of the TRIB joined the show. Kevin thinks Jared Triolo could step in and start at first with Spencer Horwitz out. Paul Skenes is acting like the ace of the staff. Kevin thinks Bubba Chandler has a chance to start in the rotation but more likely to be like Skenes and come up in May or June.

On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey reacts to Pitt basketball's season-opening win Monday vs. Radford. Is this coach Jeff Capel's deepest roster since arriving in Pittsburgh? And how good can the lead scoring duo of Jaland Lowe and Ishmael Leggett be in 2024-25 as they take on bigger roles following the departures of Bub Carrington and Blake Hinson? Jason tackles those questions, reacts to Pirates infielder Jared Triolo winning a Gold Glove; looks ahead to the Steelers' NFL Week 10 matchup with the Washington Commanders; and ponders the Penguins future now that they appear to be playing a more responsible brand of hockey, led by captain Sidney Crosby.
First of all, let's congratulate Jared Triolo for winning his very first Rawlings Gold Glove Award as a UTIL player. He was the lone Pittsburgh Pirates player to be nominated as well as won. In the spirit of election season, we posted a poll last night to see the approval ratings of front office members, coaches, as well as players in the Pirates organization. Let's review those and discuss. Use Promo Code NORTHSHORENINE for $20 off your first order at Seatgeek LIKE and SUBSCRIBE with NOTIFICATIONS ON if you enjoyed the show! Pitt got blown out at SMU. Is the season already a success? It wasn't good on Saturday, but it has been good. James Franklin did what he always does against OSU. Franklin should stay at PSU regardless, it could be a lot worse. An analogy to Jamie Dixon's time at Pitt. Penn State is second tier, but that means still in the top 10 every year. Would 11-1 and the playoffs be a step forward? How bout a successful year for Pitt? This should be the springboard year to bigger things. 9-3 would be a success. What teams are better than PSU annually? Crowley lists 8 of them. How much do coaches matter with NIL money playing such a huge role? There's a ton of parity in CFB. Sidney Crosby has been going off, and the Pens have won two in a row. How does it compare to the Capitals? Jared Triolo won a Gold Glove, but he probably shouldn't play that much.

Jared Triolo won a Gold Glove, but he probably shouldn't play that much.Baltimore and Cincy both won yesterday. Are the Steelers going to make a trade? The Steelers are looking to buy cheap on WRs. Darius Slayton, Chris Olave, the Seahawks receivers have all been discussed. WR has been a hole all season. Khan should receive significant criticism if no WR is acquired. Have the Steelers been too patient with the WR targets? They need some help with the Ravens and Bengals looking good lately. A caller suggests Gabe Davis. Crowley's Steelers WR trade wish list: 1. Olave, tied 2. Slayton, Metcalf, Lockett. Is Tyler Boyd an option? Is this one of Mike Tomlin's best seasons? Crowley is getting heat for suggesting Olave to the Steelers. Jason Kelce smashed a rude fan's phone on Saturday. It's not the same as James Franklin arguing with a fan. Mark Kaboly joins in studio to discuss Jason Kelce's reaction, if the Steelers will make a WR trade and who he'd target. Tyreek Hill?? This year is a chance to take a big step forward, but more help is needed. Steelers should be getting healthy very soon. Can the defense hold up against the elite team on the schedule. A trip around the NFL. How much better are the Ravens than previous years? Will John Harbaugh hold them back? Are the Bengals a threat? Crowley once accidently gave out his phone number instead of the stations. Kaboly tweeted from Crowley's computer. The Browns are worse than expected, but the Commanders are better. The timing of the games is difficult down the stretch. Can the Steelers get to 10 wins? They need a home playoff game. 9 wins for Pitt would be a success. Prior to the season, 6 wins seemed reasonable. SMU was more talented. Would Steelers fans sign up for 10 wins and the playoffs? Is there any scenario where both Russ and Fields are on the Steelers next year? Can Russ be had for a discount? Will the Steelers use Fields this season? Arthur Smith has been a pleasant surprise. Broderick Jones is bad now. Are the Steelers among the best teams in all 3 phases? Steelers are a 2.5 point underdog at Washington. Would 8-2 start give the Steelers the division title? Pitt MBB starts tonight and they need to make the tournament.
Late night Buc'n tonight! Free agents are able to talk to all 30 teams Monday at 5pm. Hour three with Joe Starkey and Paul Zeise. Nick Yorke is the most impactful prospect the Pirates acquired. Bubba Chandler has a chance to be a frontline type starter and will be a solid pitcher. Jonathan doesn't think it's that big of a deal that Charles McAdoo was traded and profiles as a No. 4 outfielder. It looked like a match was lit for Michael A. Taylor and Jared Triolo. Dan is ok with the moves the Pirates made and the quality of play improving made them believe they should give it a shot.

One of the big takeaways from the chat with John was the point he made about Ke'Bryan Hayes and if the Pirates would consider moving on from him sooner rather than later. If the Pirates moved on from Hayes, would you be in favor of it? Hayes is supposed to be a cornerstone piece of this organization and he's getting worse as time goes on. Are fans ready to move on from Ke'Bryan Hayes? Do we think Jared Triolo can carry the load? Do all of these issues trace back to Andy Haines? It looks like Jazz Chisholm is officially on the market if a team is willing to call the Marlins. Should the Pirates be one of those teams? How do things look at catcher in the future?
Pirates insiders Noah Hiles and Andrew Destin discuss how the series against the Atlanta Braves showed the team's strengths (Paul Skenes, Aroldis Chapman) and weaknesses (Ke'Bryan Hayes, Jared Triolo) and where improvement can be found.
On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey ponders the struggles of young Pirates including Henry Davis, Jack Suwinski and Jared Triolo. And do those struggles suggest more time in the minors with Class AAA Indianapolis could be beneficial, as it was for Andrew McCutchen? Jason offers his thoughts on those questions as well as the series victory against the Minnesota Twins. Then he looks ahead to Steelers minicamp storylines to watch, including how Cam Sutton fits in the secondary and what becomes of Najee Harris.

In his weekly YouTube appearance, Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise joins host Adam Bittner to discuss the Steelers' low win total projections -- right around 8.5 at most major sports books. Is the betting world underrating GM Omar Khan's highly praised moves for players like Russell Wilson, Justin Fields and Patrick Queen? How much could a trade for a solid, veteran No. 2 receiver like Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel or Justin Jefferson boost the total? What about a solid NFL draft class that mimics last year's success stories with Broderick Jones, Joey Porter Jr. and Keeanu Benton? Our duo tackles those questions, then talks some Penguins and Pirates. Is it time to worry about young core pieces like Oneil Cruz, Jack Suwinski, Jared Triolo and Henry Davis, with all of them hitting .234 or worse? And is it time for Penguins GM Kyle Dubas to blow up the team's core of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang after missing the playoffs?

On the Pitching In podcast this week, Post-Gazette insider Jason Mackey joins host Adam Bittner to break down all the biggest storylines from Pirates spring training in Bradenton, Fla. Will GM Ben Cherington add to this rotation in meaningful ways before the season begins? Or will names like Chase Anderson and Jared Jones be the most likely to join the likes of Mitch Keller, Marco Gonzales and Martin Perez on the opening day staff? Are prospects like Roansy Contreras and Quinn Priester squandering their opportunities? And how did guys like Paul Skenes look in the MLB Breakout game against the Orioles? Our duo tackles those topics as well as some lineup questions. How seriously should we take strong springs from Henry Davis and Oneil Cruz? Is a quiet spring from Rowdy Tellez and concern? How are things shaping up in right field? What about the second base competition between Liover Peguero, Jared Triolo and others? And is this team poised to go over or under the Vegas win total of 74.5 wins?
