Joe and Austin both had riveting nights of TV viewing last night. Joe Joe applauds Kyle Dubas for moving on from Mike Sullivan. He thinks it was Dubas' move, not Fenway Sports Group, to move on from Sullivan. Why is Art Rooney II so afraid to move off Mike Tomlin after the Baltimore game?
Hour 1 with Joe Starkey: Joe applauds Kyle Dubas for moving on from Mike Sullivan. He thinks it was Dubas' move, not Fenway Sports Group, to move on from Sullivan. Why is Art Rooney II so afraid to move off Mike Tomlin after the Baltimore game? The Pirates had a play similar to their past mistakes on the bases.
TK thinks Mike Sullivan evaluated his situation and that other teams would want him, so he went to Kyle Dubas and wants big acquisitions. Tyler thinks things went sideways on the future of the deal and personnel. He thinks Dubas has input on who plays on the power play and other coaching decisions. Steelers coach Mike Sullivan is also out!
Former Penguin Tyler Kennedy joined the show. TK thinks Kyle Dubas said and did the right thing today, parting ways with Mike Sullivan. He also thinks Dubas handled things correctly with Sidney Crosby and made mention that it would be a longer conversation if Crosby had an issue with it. Tyler said even Sid can't pull off being a star player along with holding down GM duties like some stars tend to do. He suggested that Sid is aware a change needs to be made. TK said this is a better fit job for a younger coach looking to prove himself and not a veteran coach ready to win. Tyler thinks Sid had a great relationship with Sullivan, but he was able to acknowledge it was time for a change.
The Penguins have fired Mike Sullivan. What led up to this point? The words of Kyle Dubas made it sound like a firing – not a ‘parting of ways' like they wanted. The guys wondered if Sullivan has something else lined up with either the Rangers or Bruins. Poni said Sullivan is one of the best coaches in this city in recent years, with the accolades as the best man behind the bench for the Penguins. After 2 Stanley Cups in roughly 10 years of coaching, Sullivan is moving on. Who is the bigger issue with the Penguins – the coach or the GM? It's a discussion we tend to have with the baseball team in town. How much of a commitment was there to the Penguins from the head coach? The guys said it's also fair to wonder what this means for Sidney Crosby and his future. Did the Penguins make the right move firing Mike Sullivan? Former Penguin Tyler Kennedy joined the show. TK thinks Kyle Dubas said and did the right thing today, parting ways with Mike Sullivan. He also thinks Dubas handled things correctly with Sidney Crosby and made mention that it would be a longer conversation if Crosby had an issue with it. Tyler thinks Sid had a great relationship with Sullivan, but he was able to acknowledge it was time for a change.
For the first time since 2019, a Pittsburgh team has fired its head coach, as the Penguins parted ways with Mike Sullivan earlier today. Poni was surprised by the amount of people that were thanking Sullivan on his way out. He also noted that Mike Tomlin, once his time finally comes, won't be getting that same praise out the door. Tomlin has more good seasons than Sullivan, but has he overstayed his welcome longer? The guys wondered if it would be a day of celebration when Tomlin is done. More thoughts on the departure of Mike Sullivan. Dubas' Details – What else did Kyle Dubas say to the media today with the firing of Mike Sullivan?

Ben Ennis and Brent Gunning discuss the Maple Leafs' situation as other Atlantic teams make moves. They also chat with Sportsnet's David Amber (24:06) about past deadlines, potential craziness this year, and the implications of Mikko Rantanen being available. Adam Crowley and Dorin Dickerson take a moment to assess whether Penguins' GM Kyle Dubas or Penguins' head coach Mike Sullivan are still qualified to do their respective jobs.
This is the biggest week of the Kyle Dubas tenure, says Mullsy. The trade deadline is approaching in the NHL and the Penguins are in clear rebuild mode. Last year the Pens sent Jake Guentzel to Carolina. What happens this time around? The big name that is expected to be on the block from Pittsburgh is Rickard Rakell. He's having a career year and he has been a key part in what Sidney Crosby has done this season.

Hockey Talk! There was a report earlier today that Kyle Dubas is looking for a fire sale of the Penguins. There are only a few "untouchables" and Kris Letang is not on that list. How handcuffed has Dubas been since coming to Pittsburgh? Where does the line get drawn for the Penguins running decisions by Sidney Crosby?
Adam Schefter reported that the Chicago Bears called the Steelers to ask about trading for Mike Tomlin. The Steelers did not even entertain the call and Donny says that is malpractice on the Steelers part. With everything that is happening, to not even entertain the idea is not smart at all. The last time the Steelers and Bears made a trade it was heavily in the Steelers' favor so why not try it again? Donny then admits no matter what Tomlin will be the coach until he no longer wants to be here. Phone callers chime in on the reported Bears interest in trading for Mike Tomlin. Hockey Talk! The FAN Morning Show with Ben Ennis and Daniele Franceschi goes into its final hour of the week with a look at the NHL standings and where the Maple Leafs fit in its landscape. ESPN's Greg Wyshynski shares what's led to the turnaround in New Jersey and the impact Sheldon Keefe has had, before discussing Alex Ovechkin's chase of history and how best to celebrate it when it happens. Wysh, a diehard Mets fan, also gives his take on the Pete Alonso situation. Next up, Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff dives into the Canucks' current problematic situation between JT Miller and Elias Pettersson, how it's been handled by Vancouver, and if its finally coming to a head with the site of Miller on the bench last night (26:37). The trio also take a deeper dive into Frank's piece from this week on Kyle Dubas and his troublesome time so far in Pittsburgh; they take it a step back farther to his tenure in Toronto and if that should be viewed as a success in any facet. On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey reacts to news that the Penguins have waived goalie Tristan Jarry with the intent of sending him to their Wilkes-Barre/Scranton affiliate in the AHL. Why was it the right move for GM Kyle Dubas, despite Jarry's lucrative contract? Will the NHL goaltending group be better moving forward with Joel Blomqvist and Alex Nedeljkovic? Was former GM Jim Rutherford picking Matt Murray over Marc-Andre Fleury still the right move in hindsight, given what it led to with Jarry? How much does the Jarry contract taint Dubas moving forward? And what can the Penguins expect from star Evgeni Malkin amid his return?
Jason Gregor and Frank Seravalli are back with a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown as they went around the league and talked about some of the big stories that have developed over the last week. They started things off by talking about the Pittsburgh Penguins' decision to place veteran goalie Tristan Jarry on waivers. He's just a few years removed from signing a long-term extension with the club and while he hasn't performed up to that contract this season, both Frank and Jason took issue with the Penguins using him as a scapegoat. That led to a bigger-picture conversation about what Dubas has done since taking over as General Manager. From one of the worst stories in the league to one of the best, the guys then looked at the Columbus Blue Jackets, who are currently in a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Kirill Marchenko and Zach Werenski have both been spectacular and the team is playing unreal hockey. Can they hold onto this playoff spot?Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about where John Klingberg could potentially sign, the Chicago Blackhawks deadline plans, and whether or not Kyle Dubas will be around when the Penguins finally get back to the playoffs, whenever that might be.To wrap things up, they talked about Connor Hellebuyck running away with the Vezina Trophy and how much pressure the Winnipeg Jets are facing this year to go on a deep playoff run.1:10 - Penguins waive Jarry15:30 - Blue Jackets keep rolling24:00 - Buy or Sell (Klingberg, Hawks deadline plans, Dubas' future)42:10 - Hellebuyck & the Jets47:00 - Frustration in TorontoWant to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? In this episode, Nick and Nick recap the Pittsburgh Penguins' winless road trip and discuss why, despite the losses, they are still trending in the right direction (2:03). They also dive into Erik Karlsson's recent performance and discuss whether this version of the Swedish star justifies the risk Dubas took in trading for him (15:49). Nick and Nick close out the episode by responding to a few listener-suggested mock trades, including one for an electrifying offensive talent who has lost favor with his current team (26:18).
