How do you balance the millions of decisions that need to be made that first year of podcasting? In this conversation we discuss these decisions with Mete Yurtsever of the Değer Yaratmanın Formülü podcast. Mete is from and in Turkey now but that hasn't always been the case. He has over 25 years of experience in Marketing and 13 of those years he was working and living in 5 different countries: Romania, Russia, Serbia, Ukraine & Moldova. In this conversation we chat about: what types of podcasts are popular in Turkey what languages and apps are the most commonly used in Turkey why he started his own podcast & what the goals are for it what he learned after doing a listener survey for his business podcast how to prioritize the many podcasting decisions like sound treatment, transcripts, marketing and social media his advice to new Podcasters in Turkey English episodes of his podcast: https://www.meteyurtsever.com/dyf-podcast/dyf-en-podcast/ (https://www.meteyurtsever.com/dyf-podcast/dyf-en-podcast/) The unedited YouTube video of this conversation can be seen here: https://youtu.be/pd1z5gMtfDw (https://youtu.be/pd1z5gMtfDw) All of the links for that episode and everything else we mention in this conversation will be in your podcast app for this episode and at https://www.stephfuccio.com/geopatspodcasting (https://www.stephfuccio.com/geopatspodcasting) Lastly, I'd love to hear from you!https://twitter.com/stephfuccio ( Twitter),https://www.instagram.com/stephfuccio ( Instagram),http://www.linkedin.com/in/dstephfuccio/ ( LinkedIn) & you can even leave a voice message onhttps://stephfuccio.weebly.com/contact.html ( Speakpipe).https://www.stephfuccio.com/napodpomo/32 ( ) April Global Women Podcast Editor Panels: https://www.stephfuccio.com/geopatspodcasting/live-global-women-podcast-editor-panels-april-2021 (www.stephfuccio.com/geopatspodcasting/live-global-women-podcast-editor-panels-april-2021) Subscribe to my weekly podcast editing newsletter: https://archive.aweber.com/awlist5931082/88gkB (archive.aweber.com/awlist5931082/88gkB)
Are you ready for some sheer podcast joy? Stephen is a massive advocate for hobby podcasters and focuses on the joy of the experience in everything he does in his podosphere. In this conversation, we chat about: the podcasting scene in Canada his background in audio and video the origin stories of both the Gonna Geek network AND the co-hosted Better Podcasting podcast. Do you listen to hundreds of podcasts? Kavein does and that's what makes this conversation with him so fascinating. He has a thirst for knowledge and stories that is insatiable. Last week we published the first part of this conversation about his language learning and usage as a blind person over on https://www.stephfuccio.com/geopatslanguage/38 (Geopats Language) and this week we are focused 100% on podcasts. We dive into his podcast listening habits, listening groups, accessibility issues with podcast apps and websites, Big History and his favorite podcasts. This is our first episode interviewing podcast listeners and I'd love to do more. If you are an avid podcast listener and want to chat about podcasts, do contact me. About 6 months into podcasting many Podcasters hit a wall. What am I doing? Why am I doing this? And other large, podcastery questions start haunting them. The inevitable episode of doubt happens and then there is either podfade or a shift in content. This is exactly the type of episode that I heard Dakota do on his Language Learning Lounge podcast. Because Dakota and I already knew each other, I decided that instead of just listening I would reach out and try to help. Or at least, ask a lot of questions to find out why this keeps happening to lovely Podcasters like him. This is the conversation that we had. If you've ever wondered what it's like to live, work and podcast in Kathmandu, Nepal, this episode is for you! Big & White, their podcasting nicknames, are two American Linguists who, until very recently were living in Nepal and creating a rather hilarious audio account of their daily lives. Their episodes covered much of what expat podcasts cover (https://www.podchaser.com/lists/expat-podcasts-107ZztJV0y) like food, weather, language, and cultural differences but there is an extra kick to their podcast. Their connection and how they bounce off each other is so much fun to listen to. This is the main reason I became a fan of The Big & White Podcast in the first place and definitely why I asked to interview them for the show. Don't worry, we also talk about podcasting bits like technology, social media, podcast learning curve, editing, audience feedback, Nepali podcasts, guests and advice for new Podcasters also. But this conversation is a bit more free flowing than some of the other Geopats Podcasting episodes because we dipped into some of their content topics too like their visual stickoutness in Nepal (thus the name of the podcast), weight lifting and so much more. And since they are Linguists that were doing field work all over Nepal, there is an episode coming on Geopats Language podcast with that geeking out aspect as well. This episode is really special for me. Last month for NaPodPoMo I had the extreme pleasure of chatting with Damon Castillo for this episode. Yes, THE Damon Castillo of the Mess of Me album that we've been using for the past 2 years in all of the Geopats Podcast Network shows. We talk about the longevity of the Damon Castillo Band, his geopatness, my favorite song on the Mess of Me Album (Saint Cecilia), his recording studio in San Luis Obispo, what music he listens to and some creative struggles. We are firmly seated in the United States for this episode. Well, I (Steph) am currently in Tirana, Albania (check https://www.instagram.com/stephfuccio/?hl=en on IG or https://twitter.com/stephfuccio on Twitter for more about this) but my guest, Aseloka Smith of the https://coloredgirlbeautiful.com/ (Colored Girl Beautiful podcast), is in the U.S. With Geopats Podcasting we hope to shake up your podcast creation process by listening to how others use the medium around the world and Aseloka will definitely get your creative juices flowing with what and how she has done The Colored Girl Beautiful. Also inspiring is our sponsor for this episode, https://www.podcorn.com/ (Podcorn). They are a marketplace connecting Podcasters to Advertisers. There is more information about their services at 14:23 in this episode but for now I just want to say thanks Podcorn, for the sponsorship. Although Aseloka was touched by the places in Latin America that she lived earlier in her life, it is time her travel to engage with African-American singer, political activist and the Author of the book The Colored Girl Beautiful (TCGB) that inspired the podcast, https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/1093964.E_Azalia_Hackley (E. Azalia Hackley) , that brings her on the show. Actually, I became aware of Aseloka and her podcast when I saw her on the https://www.podcastersroundtable.com/1335-2 (Podcasters Roundtable). She is one of those people that expresses ideas in such a down to earth and insightful way that I knew I had to meet her. You all know that this podcast is my excuse to meet people I admire, right? There is a link in the show notes to that appearance. During this conversation, Aseloka and I dig into the emotional, racial and creative layers woven into her podcast. And there are many. We also tap into the practical side of creating a podcast because the fact that Aseloka did the https://googlecp.prx.org/ (Google Podcast Creators Program), a Master's degree and worked a full time job while creating season 1 of TCGB is nothing less than amazing and I am pretty sure we can all learn from her. A special shout out needs to go out to https://www.instagram.com/secretadventuresofblackpeople/ (Nicole Hill,) the Producer of TCGB. You'll know why after listening to this conversation. Geopats Podcasting's podcast host is Captivate FM: An insanely Creator oriented hosting service with personality, marketing know how and more. We hope to shake up your podcast creation process by hearing how others use the medium around the world. Today, we are headed to India, to talk to Vishnu Padmanabhan from the Writer and Geek podcast. Vishnu is a Podcaster by night (literally) and an Engineer by day but admits that photography would be his alternate career, if possible. If you're a fan of the https://www.stephfuccio.com/geopatscoffee (Geopats Coffee podcast) then you're familiar with Vishnu's Co-Host and brother, Shankar. Vishnu and I covered everything that you can in podcasting, including: their podcast setup, dividing up tasks with a Co-Host (even if they are your brother!), podcasts in India, editing tech and tips, audience, outsourcing, podcast hosts, Podcasters community in India, advice for new Podcasters and more. This episode is a special one for sure. As many of you who have been listening to the podcast, follow me on the socials or participate in #PodRevDay know, I am a huge fan ofhttps://www.podchaser.com/ ( Podchaser), the IMDB of Podcasting. But some folks I talk to outside of the U.S. have expressed concerns about some Podchaser features not working as well in the country that they lived in. So, what else could I do but ask https://www.podchaser.com/creators/bradley-davis-107Zzj5f17 (Bradley Davis), the Co-founder/CEO Podchaser on the show to ask him some globally minded Podchaser questions. Bradley and I cover accessibility and language issues, combined geographic & language search dream functionality, the push and pull of keeping podcasting open and the messiness that organically ensues and so much more. What we intentionally don't cover are Podchaser or Bradley's podcasting origin stories. Why? Because they have already been well covered on other podcasts this year (Podlovers Asia, Inspired Money and The New Media Show), so I am instead adding to these episodes in the show notes at https://www.stephfuccio.com/geopatspodcasting (https://www.stephfuccio.com/geopatspodcasting/13)
In this conversation we talk with Doris Hammerschmidt of https://medienproduktion-muenchen.de/blog-podcast-radioerfahrung/ (Medienproduktion München) about the two waves of podcasting in Germany, the term "podcast industry", what it's like to write a book about such a fast changing industry, exciting new audio tools and the possible future of podcasting in Germany. In support of what's happening in the United States at this moment this is a podcast blackout episode. To find other podcast blackout episodes, follow the #podcastblackout hashtag on Twitter. Thank you to the folks of the Cult 45 Podcast, https://twitter.com/cult45podcast (https://twitter.com/cult45podcast), who started this podcast blackout episode act. The reason many Podcasters are replacing regular podcast episodes with this type of episode is to recognize the lives of black men and women killed by the police since Eric Garner's death in 2014. This is a reading of their names. More here: https://www.stephfuccio.com/special-events/podcast-blackout (https://www.stephfuccio.com/special-events/podcast-blackout)
Time and time again I hear my global friends complain that it's hard to find podcasts that are NOT from the U.S. As an American Podcaster (an Expat Podcaster, but still) this is always a sticky conversation for me because although I listen to a mix of podcasts from around the world, the U.S. is home country. So, while I can use these podcasts to stay up to date on what is happening there, I understand that not everyone needs or wants as much audio content coming from there. In fact, part of why the Global Podcasting episodes on Geopats started was because of a desire to share info about non-U.S. Podcasters and podcasting experiences with you. There is so much out there in the world, in English, and our ear buds are craving to hear it. It sounds like https://twitter.com/NormanChella (Norman Chella) has a similar goal as mine but with the Asian scene as his more specific focus. Have you ever seen someone light up over the mention of a name? This is what happens when Heather Welch's name is mentioned in the podcasting world. She doesn't just spread peace and serenity via her off the grid and nature podcast, https://www.sunshineandpowercuts.com/ (Sunshine and Powercuts), her existence and general character ARE these things. “...they say that it gives them a perspective of Germany from outsiders eyes. That was a surprise for me.” Shaun, Host of Expat Life Germany The Germany Experience (formerly Expat Life Germany) is one of those podcasts that you listen to as you are doing something else (for me I was cleaning the apartment) and then find yourself stopping, grabbing a drink and sitting down to listen. Why? Because the authentic, thinky conversations that Host Shaun has with his guests are so calm and intriguing that you want to give them your full attention. This is exactly why I had to reach out to Shaun and ask him to join us on this new Expat Podcasters show. What do you do as an expat when your life goal is to collect and share experiences and information? You start a podcast! And that is exactly what American expat in Germany Nicole Palazzo did just after her first year in Freiburg, Germany. We recorded this mini episode on the new Podbean Live app, which was in Beta version. There were some technical issues but we pushed through and I think there is so much useful and interesting information in Nicole's audio story. In fact, she is going to come back and in the future and update us on her expat podcasting life and adventures. Hurrah. More info:
