The course instructor, Daniel Koss, an associate senior lecturer and research scholar in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University, joins Eric & Cobus from Cambridge to discuss the key themes that he's covering in this semester's class.SHOW NOTES:"EASTD 199: China and the African Continent" course cover art: https://bit.ly/46G4UrRGoogle Scholar: Daniel Koss: https://bit.ly/46zNgG3Africans on China: africansonchina.comJOIN THE DISCUSSION:X: @ChinaGSProject| @stadenesque | @eric_olander | @kossdanielFacebook: www.facebook.com/ChinaAfricaProjectYouTube: www.youtube.com/@ChinaGlobalSouthFOLLOW CAP IN FRENCH AND ARABIC:Français: www.projetafriquechine.com | @AfrikChineعربي: www.akhbaralsin-africia.com | @AkhbarAlSinAfrJOIN US ON PATREON!Become a CAP Patreon member and get all sorts of cool stuff, including our Week in Review report, an invitation to join monthly Zoom calls with Eric & Cobus, and even an awesome new CAP Podcast mug!www.patreon.com/chinaglobalsouthSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this episode, Alex argues that Yevgeny Prigozhin's ghost will haunt Putin for a long time. According to reports from the Associated Press, “Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin was listed as a passenger on a plane that crashed Wednesday near Russia's Tver region, northwest of Moscow.” Alex breaks down why these events are fascinating inside of Russia, but also paint a troubling picture around what is happening outside of the country. For example, prior to his death, Prigozhin was calling for more aid towards his forces in the Sahel region of Africa. It seems like the Wagner Group is struggling in Russia, but could be gaining support inside of the African Continent.

This podcast is personal in a very real way. John Honold has been a close friend for just under four decades.I met him as a cocky, even arrogant, 20-year-old who informed me, “I hope you don't mind, but I knock off your sermons each Thursday under a tree at Windward Community College.”He was reteaching my Sunday messages in a microchurch he'd started on campus. I responded, “Keep it up, and you'll become our college pastor.” He did. And he married Brenda Ching, one of the original 30 people to move from California to plant the church. After serving as College Pastor, Youth Pastor and our Exec for over a decade, we launched him to plant a Hope Chapel in Oahu's “Second City,” Kapolei. It was a tossup as to which of us should plant the new church—me with a built-in audience from our daily radio broadcasts or John, who might reach a younger audience. He won the coin toss, and soon 700+ people met in various borrowed spaces. They multiplied new congregations from that base in Hawaii, Okinawa, Thailand and The Philippines. This episode is about church multiplication, an enduring friendship and how to follow the Holy Spirit in a way that parallels building sidewalks where people trample the grass on a college campus.Today John leads a prevailing model church (which both shrunk and grew after COVID) that operates as a hub for twelve microchurches—and he's paid a full-time salary to boot. Journey Church Network Hawaii has cracked the code for mixing what worked in the past with the future many envision.Did I mention that they support ministries in Okinawa, Mainland Japan and across the African Continent? John is also consulting with the oldest, and perhaps most famous, church that started in the “Kingdom of Hawaii.” They're bringing back the fire of the original vision to cover the islands with the gospel. If you're trying to understand the implications of microchurch on the congregation you lead, this will aid your quest. Besides, it gives good insight into the values that drive this podcast and have driven me for a long time. Few places on the planet resonate with the adventurer like the African continent, from the vibrant cultures to the ancient civilizations, megafauna, and some of the most remote and inspiring landscapes on earth. At Overland Journal, we have been fortunate to circumnavigate the planet three times and cross all seven continents. Still, we had one journey that has continually called to us- crossing the long axis of the African continent.Today marks day zero of the journey, as our Ineos Grenadier arrives in Durban, and we begin lightly modifying the vehicle to meet our needs as travelers. We selected the Grenadier because of its "Built on Purpose" design, robust construction, off-highway capabilities, and wagon configuration (Editor's Note: We are not being paid to use the Grenadier). As we often share, pinnacle overland vehicles like the Grenadier require few changes for overlanding, and the Grenadier is no exception. We have no modifications planned for the vehicle, but we will add some storage and systems that help support the adventure. Taking Delivery of the GrenadierWe took delivery of the Grenadier in London and spent a week exploring the countryside and testing the vehicle at the Millbrook proving grounds in Bedfordshire. In London, I worked with the Ineos team on securing RORO shipping, spares, support equipment, and the Carnet de Passage for importation. Our preparations have begun in Johannesburg, working with longtime friends and partners to help source the needed kit and discussing the route plans with experienced Trans-Africa overlanders. After a few weeks in Joburg, we will conduct a test run through Lesotho and the surrounding bushveld before heading to Cape Town and our launching-off point.Planned Grenadier Fieldmaster Modifications and Support Equipment: Secure vehicle storage, including a drawer system Inside sleeping platform that retains the rear seats Garmin GPS navigation and satellite communication Recovery gear, tools, and spares First aid and emergency supplies Melvill and Moon canvas seat covers and bed rolls Redarc battery management with auxiliary lithium battery Additional 80 liters of auxiliary fuel in Giant Loop bladders and NATO cans That is it. . . Our Trans-Africa Overland Route PlanThe original plan was to drive along the classic eastern track from Cape Town to Cairo. With Sudan's closed border, we are looking at all possibilities, including driving north to Kenya and crossing through Rwanda to the DRC and up the west coast. Adjustments are all part of the adventure, and I am being in the moment and taking the journey country by country. To help document the journey, I will have Joe Fleming along for most (if not all) of the trip. Joe is an inspiring visual storyteller, an experienced traveler, and a good friend. Others are planning to join for short sections too, and we will share our experiences on the pages of Overland Journal, in articles for expeditionportal.com, on our YouTube channel, and on The Overland Journal Podcast. I am so grateful for the support of my family and the Overland International team in undertaking this trip, along with the generous help from Aether Apparel, Front Runner, Garmin, Ineos Automotive, Redarc, and others. We look forward to meeting some of you along the Overland Journal trans-Africa continental crossing journey and celebrating what will become a historic first (more on that soon). Yours in adventure, Scott BradyPublisherInstagram and Threads: @scott.a.bradyTwitter: @scott_bradyFull show notes available at Overland Journal Podcast

Ahead of a meeting of African Union Heads of States in Addis Ababa Ethiopia, numerous civil society organizations called on the African Union not to Geoengineer the African Continent. The organizations noted that geoengineering is a false techno-fix that can only provide an excuse for the Global North to continue relying on fossil-fuel based energy generation in light of the ongoing climate emergency. The organizations stated that  advancing geoengineering technologies distracts countries from their commitments to large emission cuts, responsible consumption and delivering over-due climate finance. On this episode of Breaking Green we will talk with Dr. Mfoniso Antia of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation. Not so; the king of Portugal obtained  the map from Nicolo Conti some thirty years  before Christibol Colon was born. When Bartholomew went to work in the map-making office of Henry the Navigator, he became aware of the map, and he and his brother concocted a scheme, by which they would reconfigure the map, making the African Continent much larger to discourage the idea of sailing East, and using this to obtain financing for a voyage West. Whether he approached other monarchs beside Isabella and Ferdinand is unknown to me, but Spain bought into this scheme.  - Loren

Becoming successful in life, sometimes one comes to think, is contingent on so many things, but a careful look at it again reveals that only one thing is required, and through this one thing, other things come to light. It is like passing white light through a prism, and it comes to reveal the other colors which make life beautiful. So what is this one thing, you may be asking? It is Leadership.Renowned leadership expert John C. Maxwell's definition of Leadership sums it up for me: "Everything rises and falls on leadership."
