Have you ever wanted to try a book club but they just seem too peopley? Or maybe you don't want to be told what book you have to read. OR maybe you are looking for a place away from kids and responsibilities where nothing else but the words in front of you are vying for your attention. If any of these apply, then a Silent Book Club might be for you. Silent Book Club began in 2012 and is, according to their mission statement, a “global community of readers, with more than 1500 chapters in 54 countries around the world led by local volunteers. SBC members gather in public at bars, cafes, bookstores, libraries, and online to read together in quiet camaraderie.” This week we chat with Brittany Brar, the leader of a local chapter of the Silent Book Club in Louisville, Kentucky. Brittany started the local chapter here in 2019, right before the pandemic with 5 people. She was new in town and didn't know where to find a booklcub to join. Now the group has over 2000 members of their FB group and as many as 60 people have shown up to their monthly meetings. Brittany talks to us about how people have developed a new sense of community, when a powerpoint presentation can be regarded as fun, and her go-to genres After our chat with Brittany, we will give you our recommendations for big honking books that meet not only your reading but also strength training goals. What's that on the horizon? It's a leviathan! This month on the Space-Biff! Space-Cast!, we're joined by Justin Kemppainen to discuss Leviathan Wilds, the inaugural title of his new studio, Moon Crab Games. Along the way, we also spill tea about the ups and downs of working at a major studio after its acquisition by megacorporation Asmodee, the apprehensions of founding an independent imprint, and the inspirations behind a game about stabbing giants in their flashing weak points.

Space ships whip across the solar system, ice haulers burn in from the gas giants, stolen Martian corvettes sneak behind enemy lines, and very human characters tie it all together and make the incredible journey worth the ride. Miraculously all 9 books (plus a collection of short stories) are fun, well-done adventures that will keep you turning the pages and racing to find out what happens next. The Buddies are back in the sci-fi world, this time venturing out into the great unknown, or one might say, The Expanse… as they took on book one of The Expanse series, Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey. The Buddies were quite agreeable on this one, as they discussed giving mass-murders seconds chances, the benefits of rioting, and the spot-on historical accuracies of films like U571 and The Patriot. So wake up, expand your mind, and join the Buddy Book Club AKA, the Leviathan (Wakes) of podcast.Intro: (0:00-2:05)Stock Up/Down (2:06-21:14)Favorite Scene/Character (21:15-23:55)Love/Hate (23:56-33:56)Listener Email (33:57-38:33)Conclusion (38:34-42:21)Next Book: KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON by DAVID GRANN
The Buddies were all goosed up to watch the 2000's action movie Swordfish. The Buddies are currently reading the lengthy, Leviathan Wakes (and in the midst of the NFL season), but wanted to discuss the controversial movie for all the listeners that have been begging for it. The Buddies discussions/arguments got them talking about the name ‘Stanley', the cleanliness of tequila shots, and the 60 second countdown. So live a life where nothing is beyond you. Do what only other fantasizes about, and join the Buddies as they discuss the epic/horrible (depending on who you ask) action thriller Swordfish.Intro: (0:00-1:29)Stock Up/Down (1:30-22:47)Love/Hate (22:48-33:12)Studio Notes/Reviews (33:13-37:03)Conclusion (37:04-40:21)Next Book: LEVIATHAN WAKES by JAMES S.A. Hannah and Sam are once again at Camp, by the magical healing waters of Clearwater Pond, and there has been a lot of reading going on (plus, the sound quality of this episode is amazing). We start with "Leviathan Wakes," the first book of the Expanse series (perhaps an addiction in the making for Sam), which leads us to wonder what exactly a "space opera" is. Like all the books Sam read this week, it's very violent. But Hannah's reading "Hello, Beautiful," which is not violent, and is rather a retelling (of sorts) of "Little Women," and is a bit underwhelming (and Hannah may have made up the word "mythicizing"). Also a bit of a retelling is "The Land of Lost Things," John Connolly's follow up to what apparently was the popular "Book of Lost Things" (we hadn't heard of it), which is "like 'Land of Stories' plus 'Fairy Tale.'" Then we get into a little back and forth about "Chain Gang All-Stars" — Hannah is a huge fan, but Sam isn't quite sure (this was a big discussion amongst everyone at camp). Oh, and Hannah finally read "The Midnight Library" and has some thoughts! Those thoughts unveil a critical difference in Hannah and Sam's general worldviews. Finally, there is "An Honest Man," yet another super-violent book set on the islands of Maine. It's good, and he gave it to his dad to read, but Sam is sensitive about all of these books set in Maine nowadays. And "Same Time Next Summer," where you know exactly what's going to happen. And it's not very spicy.
Jim Holden is XO of an ice hauler making runs from the rings of Saturn to the asteroid cities of the Belt. Out in the darkness, they detect a distress signal, and move to investigate. Holden leads the away team to check on the signal, and they find a dead ship called the Scopuli that seems to have been boarded with military precision. Moments later, a stealth ship fires nuclear torpedoes at the ice hauler, killing the entire crew, leaving Holden and his away team as the only survivors. All the evidence points to the Martian military, and system-wide war threatens to break out unless Holden can find out who set the trap, and why. Miller is a detective on Ceres, and he is looking for a girl. When the trail leads him to the Scopuli and Holden, they realize that this girl may be the key to everything. Holden and Miller must thread the needle between the Earth government, the Outer Planet revolutionaries, and secretive corporations—and the odds are against them. But out in the Belt, the rules are different, and one small ship can change the fate of the universe. Hello friends! We're pretty brief on news this week, talking Love and Thunder Marvel Legends leaks and a few bits of minor news on upcoming TV projects. The previous week's comic book PICKS (0:16:00) include extended segments on WW The Amazons: Historia #2 and Strange #2 (0:29:53), before getting into a few others, all female-forward comics! This week's comic book PULLS 0:42:19 include only a few indie #1's and some solid others worth getting excited about, but the main draw of this episode is the MOON KNIIGT Ep2 breakdown 0:46:11, titled Summon the Suit. Like last week, I go through the relevant events on the episode and how it connects to the comics, the takes the MCU is doing on comic entities, and theories about what might be happening going forward. Finally, we end with the latest Young Justice S.4 0:57:34 ep., episode 17 titled: Leviathan Wakes. This episode wrapped up a lot of the current series arc, but there's still a long ways to go for these characters. My next episode will be coming out Wednesday the 13th or Friday the 16th this week, being the April Yancy St Special: Magik! An Overview of Illyana Rasputin. I have an enormous amount of information to cover, and I'm supremely excited to talk all things Magik! Keep an eye out for that later this week, otherwise the next regularly scheduled episode is coming Monday the 18th, covering Moon Knight episode 3, more Young Justice, new comic book day, and all the relevant news! Until then, I hope your spring is coming along well. Get some rest, get unabashedly sweaty, and get excited. Lot's more to come! Andrew and J Scotty are back to go deep and dive into their thoughts and reactions to the final episode of Young Justice Phantoms' Atlantean arc, Episode 17: Leviathan Wakes!
Spoiler free until 00:30:19! For this episode Andrew, Joel, and Steven review Leviathan Wakes, the first book in the Expanse series. In a publishing world dominated by fantasy and YA offerings, Leviathan Wakes leaped out to spawn 8 more novels and a hit TV series, but can it withstand our critiques? What makes a book truly “hard” science fiction? Does magic have a place in such a world? Just how well can only 2 character perspectives develop and reveal the vast world building necessary in a sci-if? We attempt to answer all these questions and more in today's episode! 00:00:00 Intro 00:00:34 Favorite Fictional Detective 00:14:32 Spoiler Free Review 00:29:36 Intermission 00:30:19 Setting 00:44:04 Character 00:55:22 Plot 01:09:07 Writing 01:20:47 Entertainment Value 01:25:59 Outro Website: https://www.spoilersintendedpodcast.com/ (https://www.spoilersintendedpodcast.com/) Patreon : https://my.captivate.fm/patreon.com/SpoilersIntendedPodcast (patreon.com/SpoilersIntendedPodcast) Discord : https://discord.gg/kGRAmjbqcF (https://discord.gg/kGRAmjbqcF)
