Elsie Escobar is, without question, one of the pioneers of podcasting. All the way back in 2006, she started one of the original yoga podcasts: Elsie's Yoga Class, which garnered 4 million downloads in its lifetime. She stuck with it until 2013, when she joined Libsyn, and she's been co-hosting their official podcast The Feed ever since. She also happens to be the first Latina ever inducted into the Academy of Podcasters' Hall of Fame. That's about as fruitful of a career as any podcaster could hope for, but like most of us, Elsie had another life before embracing the world of online audio. She pivoted from her Hollywood acting career after growing tired of feeling tokenized, thinking podcasting might finally let her stretch her creative legs - and boy, did it ever - but of course, not without a struggle. Getting into podcasting is hard enough today, even with the massive online infrastructure and endless number of tools & resources we have access to. Can you imagine how daunting it must have been in 2006? And yet, Elsie endured, and has an Everest-sized mountain of successes to show for it.As someone who's been around since the dawn of podcasting, and has seen just about every evolution the medium has gone through, Elsie brought an incredible (and very rare) perspective to the show. Between her thoughts on things like monetization, adapting to new platforms, adding a video component, the importance of promos, and the future of the industry, anyone looking to make a living in this business will no doubt find something incredibly valuable in this episode.Elsie is also the co-founder and co-host of She Podcasts, the largest online community for women and non binary podcasters on Facebook with over 20,000 members. She continues to make the podcasting space safer and more connected every day, and even shares her future plans to create a better ecosystem for her audience.A Transcript and video of the show is available on our network page. Please sign up for the SOUNDING OFF Newsletter. Goals - Chari: Step outside your box. Do something different to get your creativity going. For instance, make your own comic - Ella: If you are thinking about doing a virtual event, write down what you want to have happen; magic happens when you get your ideas out of your head and onto the page - Jessica: Look up what other people are doing in whatever genre you are looking into, and write what you do not like about it Final Thoughts - Jessica: If you feel you are stifling your own creativity, remember life is to be enjoyed! - Chari: Being creative is all about having fun and whatever that means. Go with the flow and see where the opportunities lead - Ella: Give yourself grace. Sometimes it's hard to be ourselves because we were someone else for so long. “The very stone one kicks with one's boot will outlast Shakespeare.”― Virginia Woolf, To the LighthouseToday my guest is Kat Kluger. Kat & I play tennis together but know very little about one another off the court, until now. We all have a story, that is guaranteed, and just like any other guest, I am always blown away by the paths that life has lead them down. Kat is no exception. Growing up on the island of Kauai, life was both beautiful & a bit scarce & with no formal schooling until a later age. Now, life is much different for Kat in a way that she built for herself, still beautiful, still simple & 100% authentic.Check out Camp Couranthttps://campcourant.org/@theyrejusthumanswww.theyrejusthumans.com

It's a horror show, kids, at least it was around the beautiful Sonic Bloom Awards banquet table during the She Podcasts Unplugged! event in concert with PodFest 2024. And yet, despite the unsolicited (geriatric) pick up lines, latent latex balloon smell and traumatic special-effect makeup photos, the most exciting thing we saw at this year's extraordinary event was how to optimize your podcast workflow using artificial intelligence. Honestly, you think we would have investigated this option sooner given how strained our biological intelligence has been lately. Bah DAH cha! Seriously, Dear Listener. For this episode, we tasked AI with the challenge of writing 5 sample titles with accompanying 100 word blurbs for use as show notes. Here is, word for word, what the computer spit out: The Worst Pickup Lines (and Other Orlando Mishaps) Melissa and Amy recap their eventful trip to a women in podcasting conference, which included being subjected to cringeworthy pickup lines from older men at the hotel bar. They also share hilarious stories of laughter-induced urination, getting accosted with graphic images, and the overall quirky escapades of their "velveteen rabbity" Orlando getaway. Holding in Laughter and Pee: Our Crazy Orlando Trip Through uncontrollable laughter, Melissa and Amy recount wetting themselves numerous times during their women in podcasting conference in Orlando. From horrifying bathroom smells to inappropriate overshares from strangers to questionable travel snafus, their eventful trip offered plenty of comedic fodder, despite the lackluster hotel amenities and odd mishmash of conference attendees. The Time We Peed Our Pants Laughing in Orlando Melissa and Amy recap the nonstop hilarity during their women's podcasting conference trip to Orlando, from getting hit on by overly confident men at bars to a stranger ambushing them with graphic images. Their days were filled with laughing so hard they peed their pants, yelling at people out of fear, and enjoying each other's company amidst the quirky escapades. Strange Pickup Lines and Public Peeing: Our Orlando Adventure During their women's podcasting conference getaway, Melissa and Amy were in stitches recounting ridiculous pickup attempts from men at hotel bars along with uncontrollably laughing until they wet themselves...in public! From horrifying bathroom smells to graphic photo ambushes, their overnight trip was filled with hilarious mishaps and lots of laughter. One Wild and Crazy Orlando Trip Melissa and Amy recap their eventful Orlando trip chock-full of laughter, escapades and hijinks - from cringeworthy pickup lines from men to uncontrollable giggling that led to public peeing. Despite a questionable hotel stay and odd conference attendees, they made the most of it, supporting their friend and enjoying time together, even if it meant getting ambushed by a stranger's graphic images! And if you think that's cool, consider telling a friend about our show. You can find us on all the socials at @ListenBrilliant, or on your preferred podcast player as Brilliant Observations Podcast. We'd love a follow on TikTok as well, as we're trying to get more intentional about posting behind the scenes videos there for your listening enjoyment. See you next week! Special thanks to the Sonic Bloom Awards for our nomination to multiple categories and exciting, humbling win as Best Podcast Cohosts of 2024 Shoutout to Jessica Kupferman, Elsie Escobar and the whole crew at She Podcasts for the amazing sessions, speakers, parties, after-parties, balloons, soundtrack, cheese tray and tiny cherry-centered creme pastry things that kinda looked like little alien nipples but were startlingly delicious at She Podcasts Unplugged, the only live event for She Podcasts in 2024 Full credit to Unfuck Your Business Podcast for the podcast workflow tips using AI. Definintely check them out if you're looking for resources, brand consulting or podcast marketing support.
Can you believe it's been three years of Toxic? And wouldn't you know it, we haven't run out of toxic topics to discuss yet. Go, society! Thank you for sticking with us through the hard conversations. To celebrate, we were given the best present: our first award. We recently found out that we won the Social Change Maker Award from She Podcasts' first-ever Sonic Bloom Awards and we're a little proud of that. OK, a lot proud. To effect social change through these conversations is our number one goal. These stories aren't always easy to hear, but we believe anger fuels action. You have to get angry about some of this in such a way that makes you want to do something…anything…to help. And for us, that begins with talking and morphs into education, awareness, marching, voting, and reaching all of you. Today's episode is all about grooming. But not your armpit hair and not your goldendoodle. Grooming of victims by abusers. The most at-risk group for this are women between 18 and 24, but groomers can target teens who are often even more vulnerable. We welcome Eileen Martin, mental health therapist and survivor, to talk about her own experience of being groomed at 17. Parents and anyone who exists around teens will definitely want to listen for what the red flags are that could indicate a young person is being groomed. Before we talk grooming, Jenna and Amanda also HAVE to give a shout-out to their hero, excuse me, shero, of the f'ing week: E. Jean Carroll. A jury out of Manhattan just awarded her $83.3 million from former president and accused rapist Donald Trump after he verbally harassed and degraded her for years following her 2019 disclosure that he assaulted her in a dressing room. She says she can't wait to spend the settlement on something he hates, like helping other survivors of sexual assault. Do you have a story you think we need to discuss or a guest we should have on? Please help us spread this conversation further by sharing an episode of Toxic with a friend, your dentist, a random stranger in line at the grocery store, etc., by following us on your favorite podcast platform or social media, or by leaving us a review. Closing out our season 4 with Elsie Escobar from She Podcast and Libsyn's "The Feed" podcast! Elsie is a podcasting pioneer with 17 plus years as a podcaster, El Salvadoran immigrant, Co-Founder of She Podcasts with 20K members and the Director of Community and Content at Libsyn- a hosting, distribution, and monetization podcasting platform. However, she did not start out in podcasting, it came to her after being denied multiple times in Hollywood for not looking like what should be a “traditional stereotypical Latina.” Why are we deemed to all look like Jo-Lo, Selma Hayek or a ganster chola, with various degrees of accents in Hollywood! This is the lens we are still perceived in throughout many roles in our careers or have encountered here in the US, whether you're an immigrant, 1st Gen, 2nd Gen or a 3rd generation Californian-Aztlan Mexican American, like myself. Podcasting has accelerated tremendously with the influx of technology, specifically for our community narratives and the technology that is leveraging our voices. We break down the numbers, within the Latino community of listening and to recognize the opportunity to invest in our platforms. The Latino Edison Podcasting Report shows the data, and all the receipts of what our community is listening to our podcasting. Podcasting is leveraging many voices and narratives, but it's our own narratives, not AI, as an uninterrupted 1:1 dialoge. As Elise states in this podcast, “it's unbelievably freeing to me, to not be judged by who I DON'T look like.” More POC/women of color podcasting and our LGTBQ+ communities are moving into podcasting, to share HerStories, our ancestral narratives, and our legacy that will not be erased by AI, but will give power to new and stronger generations. 1st Anniversary Episode! I can't believe this pod has been going for an entire year. Thank you for the support and for continuing to tune in. This anniversary episode doesn't disappoint; I go deep and talk about a recent struggle, as in last week recent. Thankfully my self-love helped me get through and see the silver lining. Have you ever seen the red flag and continued to go past it? If so, this episode is for you. We all ignore red flags as part of our journey -- it's what we do after we ignore the red flag, our gut, that's important. I get raw and honest about my past struggle with eating and weight loss pills, my recent dabble with weight loss pills, and how I plan to navigate my future.Tune in now!@MrsLaurenElizabethJonesMrsLaurenElizabethJones.com
Hopestream for parenting kids through drug use and addiction
On this episode of Hopestream, the show comes full circle to its roots. My guest, Jess Kupferman, is the CEO of She Podcasts, a membership-based group of all-women podcasters that played an important role in the creation of this show. What I didn't know when I launched the podcast was that Jess lost her daughter to a heroin overdose at the same time I was going through our family struggles with my son.One of the most fascinating things about Jess is the way she has learned to process this trauma with a sharp sense of humor rarely seen in addiction and recovery spaces. Don't feel bad if you laugh a few times while listening to her story, but take her advice on telling your own story seriously. On this episode Jess and I discuss:why she sometimes views her family's struggles as great sitcom materialhow she “kinda kidnapped” her daughter from a rehab facilitythe frustrating state of recovery centers for those who suffer from other mental health issuesthe incredible benefits of an all-female podcasting communitybaby steps toward telling your own storyResources:ShePodcastsShePodcasts PodcastThe podcast is now part of a nonprofit called Hopestream Community: www.hopestreamcommunity.orgLearn about The Stream, our private online community for moms, at www.thestreamcommunity.comWe now have a new community for dads parenting a child who struggles with substance use and mental health; The Woods: members.thewoodscommunity.orgFind us on Instagram: @hopestreamcommunityDownload my free e-book, HINDSIGHT: Three Things I Wish I Knew When My Son Was Misusing Drugs: www.brendazane.com/hindsightJoin my email list: www.brendazane.com/email

If the universe doesn't magically create a space that's meant for you (because it won't), you create it yourself. That's exactly what Jessica Kupferman did when she and co-founder Elsie Escobar started She podcasts back in 2013 and 2014. After noticing that a lot of podcasters were men and “gurus” who were just interviewing one another, they decided they wanted to do something different. Fast forward to today, Jessica and She Podcasts is still growing, hosting an active Facebook group, live conferences, a coaching program, a new 501(c)3, and a host of other ventures. This was such a fun conversation about living up to our parents' (and society's) expectations, gaining visibility online, attending in-person conferences, making a space for yourself, why nothing has to be perfect, and so much more. Listen in! Mentioned in This Episode Attend the She Podcasts conference with me! Her sweet spot is helping podcasters set up systems for growth and training them on how to obtain sponsorship. She also is an internet “Bat Girl” with an odd amount of experience in way too many software services. Ahhh spring! Sort of. Here in my northern hemisphere home, it's still hella chilly, and I require more mood enhancements than these early weeks of daylight saving time can provide. Who better to chat with than Jessica Kupferman, CEO and co-founder of She Podcasts? She's the equivalent of a vitamin D booster in hilariously brilliant, totally authentic human form. Alongside co-founder Elsie Escobar (who's also appeared on PE), Jessica has created something unique in a space dominated by male voices (literally and figuratively): the largest podcasting community created by and especially for women, non-binary, and LGBTQIA+ folks. In addition to its own podcast, extensive social media community, and membership, She Podcasts hosts She Podcasts LIVE, an annual gathering of diverse talents and viewpoints. Book Vs. Movie: Snow WhiteThe Grimms Fairy Tales Version Vs. the 1937 Disney ClassicIn December, we cover Disney and what better adaptation to discuss than one of the greatest feature-length animated films of all time? 1937's Snow White is considered a masterpiece of storytelling by Walt Disney, who believed in the future of animation and created a studio empire with the popularity of the film's release. The original story starts with Grimm's Fairy Tales, a collection of 1800s and earlier stories that were passed down from generation to and were often violent and today might be labeled “too scary” for kids. The Brothers Grimm (Jacob & Willhelm) Their first collection was published in 1812, and the brothers fought for decades to teach and discuss German history and folklore and unified the German language. Their active years were from 1812-1858. For context, France invaded Germany at the time, and the brothers wanted to save their culture and traditions. Later, they were seen as a building block for Germany which attempted to rule the world twice in the 20th Century. Snow White's origin story is that of a little girl with a stepmother jealous of her beauty. The stepmother is an evil Queen and sends a huntsman to kill her (she is seven years old, by the way) and bring back her lungs and liver as proof. The huntsman loses his nerve and instead sets her free in the woods. She spent the next ten years taking care of seven dwarves. When the Evil Queen discovers Snow is alive, the queen (who practices black magic) schemes to kill her through a few different methods, finally having a poisoned apple as a successful weapon. The dwarves put Snow in a glass coffin and guard her. Eventually, she meets a Prince who saves her life, and they wed. Disney first saw the story as a silent film in 1915 and was determined to bring it to the big screen. The effort took hundreds of people, dozens of $5 “gags,” millions of film cells. The movie was called “Disney's Folly” for its rumored $1.5 million budget. However, it was a smash hit from the start and is now considered one of the greatest movies of all time. So between the Fairy Tale and the 1937 film? What a CreepSeason 17, Episode 10The Murder of Johnny Stompanato Lana Turner was one of Hollywood's most alluring (and controversial) actors in movie history, with star turns in the original The Postman Always Rings Twice, Imitation of Life, and Peyton Place. She was blonde, sexy, and a supposed “maneater” with eight marriages and several lovers. In 1958 she dated the former war hero and current mob hooligan Johnny Stompanato who supposedly treated her terribly. Her only child, Cheryl Crane, at 14, stabbed Johnny to death after her mother tried to break off their relationship. Cheryl was acquitted of any wrongdoing (Johnny was a BAD dude) but spent years dealing with her childhood trauma and being the daughter of a movie queen. But did Cheryl really kill Johnny, or was she covering up for her mother? What a CreepSeason 16, Episode 7Kim FowleyRock CreepWhen Kim Fowley died of bladder cancer on January 15, 2015, most headlines read that he was an underground rock and roll/LA legend who managed “The Runaways” in the 1970s. He was a tall, peculiar eccentric who never had the fame he craved but had a cult-like following of slavish fans who will miss him. Some outlets, like, NPR, mentioned he was a Svengali who seemed to prey on teenage girls. In reality, everything you have heard about (and will hear today) about him is true. He was a striking, creative, intelligent artist/salesman and a cruel, ugly, pathetic, sexually abusive creep who left several women in his wake. He never paid for his crimes, but he was never a financial success either. He was NEVER as famous as he wanted to be. His body & mind, which he used to dominate and hurt others, failed him throughout his life.Trigger Warnings: Sexual Assault, Verbal Abuse, & Drug UseSources:Kim Fowley WikipediaLoudwireEW.com Jackie Fox Accuses Kim Fowley of RapeHuff Post.comPitchfork.comPitchfork 2Evelyn McDonald's Blog PopulismEvelyn McDonald Queens of Noise: The Real Story of The Runaways (2014)Cheri Curie Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway (1989/2010)Kim Fowley: Lord of Garbage (2012)VultureThe GuardianLos Angeles TimesJackie Fox Facebook PostKathy Valentine's Facebook PostBoing BoingEdgeplay: A Film About the Runaways by former Runways bassist Victory Tischler-Blue (2004) aka “Vicky Blue.”Be sure to follow us on social media.
