One of the first podcasting resources recommended to me was Better Podcasting, of which Stargate Pioneer (SP) co-hosts with Stephen Jondrew. I turned up to one of their live recordings of an episode and connected with SP. Mark and I are both members of the Podcastage Discord community and that's how we connected. Mark joined us for the March 2019 Sunshine Summit. When you visit https://scummbags.com/ you'll find things that Mark has created. Mark has a love of music and Mark's Music Collection was his first foray at exploring music through podcasting. Adam Neely is a great communicator of music. Mark was also an avid photographer exploring the world and seeing Ben Brown's book Field Work which is also found work has been inspiring. Architecture is also of interest to Mark, and he references the 2017 film titled Columbus which is known as the modern architecture mecca of the USA. He was captivated by it, and finds film an immersive experience. Mark's Movie Collection was born out of being able to talk about films and the experiences he has watching them. We discuss whether podcasts can be considered art. This theme flows throughout the episode. The Regular Car Reviews youtube channel is an example Mark shares of a creative way of sharing car reviews. Self expression and self determination are key facets of podcasting. To quote Mark "you create all of it."I side track about having conversations in general and what led to this project. Mark reassures me that sidetracks are a part of his journey. We move to a discussion about show notes of podcasts, their function, convention, possible missed opportunities and alternatively how Mark utilises them. He likens them to the liner notes of albums for the people that care to go into the extra details of the band and their music. Mark shares that time and energy are his main challenges to creating podcasts. I'd also like to congratulate Mark and his family and welcome their newest member of the Diaz family! Podcasts often are passion projects and I asked Mark how he feels about all the time and effort expended on passion projects. He gains knowledge from podcasting and finds that valuable and reconnects with the memory of WTF podcast with Marc Maron had an episode about the film Sound City as one of the first podcasts that Mark got into. Mark reflects my question back and I share a bit about what I get from podcasting and some of my experiences along my journey. I share about how great the books by Austin Kleon have been as references for me. It's awesome to hear Mark's reflection on his experience being a part of the Sunshine Summit. We talk about community, and community helped facilitate Mark's recent guest spot on On the Subject. I love the discussion we have about the asynchronous nature of podcasting and lessons around that. The faster the speed the faster the data is transferred, allowing for smoother livestreams for example. My original connection speed was 5Mbps down, 1Mbps up - which led to stability issues whilst connecting via video and livestreaming. The upgraded speed for the Sunshine Summit was 30Mbps down, 5Mbps up - which allowed the livestreams to go ahead. I'm back from our regular summer vacation, and I think I need another one. We always a good time, but, let's just put it this way, would you want to spend 20 hours in a van with 4 screaming boys? But now it's time to get back to work, back to business, and back to talking about myself because that's what I do here. Well, not just about myself. It's also time for another Sunshine Summit! -Summer VacationThis year was the smoothest, most efficient summer vacation we've had since moving to Arizona. My wife started planning the hotels back in January and this year we've finally found the best hotel that suits our needs. As a family of 4, we just have to have a suite with a full living room and kitchen in order to keep our sanity.The drive back to Texas was seriously the smoothest it's ever been. When we drive to Texas, we actually do it all in a single trip without any overnight stays. My wife and I just keep switching drivers while the other rests. This year we went for a little different plan. I drove in the big cities and overnight, and she drove the open roads during the day. This actually left us with a pretty even spread of time. I actually stopped to take a nap at some rest stops a couple times, but I never got so tired that I felt like we were in danger, which has happened in the past. Other than that we stopped for major meals and kept on trucking.We did all the same things we always do. We visited our families. My stepmom insisted we all go to Peter Piper Pizza. We went to the Texas State Aquarium. We drove around to see what things have changed. It's the same things we do every year, but this year seemed must less stressful. Maybe it's because we are in such a good place financially this time. For the first time ever, we actually didn't come home broke. In fact, we actually came back with extra money left over.It's taken nearly 10 years, but we've finally gotten our family vacation dialed in. The design of the freeway systems in the major cities in Texas is utterly retarded. Never mind that they are perpetually under construction with no real progress or signs of any actual improvements over the last 8 years. Scratch that. Make it 20 years. The freeway systems and roads themselves make no logical sense. Frequently, ramps exiting the freeway lead directly into ramps entering the freeway with less than a quarter mile of space for the cross traffic to avoid crashing into each other. Oh and the on-ramps themselves have such short merge lanes that many times cars have to stop on the ramps or in the travel lanes of the freeway to allow cars to enter and merge into traffic or avoid collisions.Add to that the fact that all of the freeways have active businesses and shopping areas running along them and use the frontage roads as major streets. And of course these businesses are all the ones that you are trying to get to: grocery stores, gas stations, shopping malls, hotels. So when you are trying to get in and out of these businesses you are having to fight with all of the traffic trying to get on and off the freeway. On top of all of that, the cities are designed in a way that practically forces you into using those freeways to get anywhere because of how the cities are laid out. Of course the roads themselves aren't actually capable of handling the heavy load of traffic and so you may spend hours on the road and maybe only move 2 miles. I all but refuse to drive at certain times of the day while I'm visiting my dad. It's not worth the stress. Oh, and did I mention just about every road is in need of repair and cleanup? It's been a fun week around the Odd house. I've decided I want to start writing more for the blog. I'm trying to do more with the Facebook group. We took the family to the food truck festival. I got to be a part of the Sunshine Summit 2018 and hang out in the live streams. And it seems that I have some sort of personal story for every news story this week, except for one. -WEIRD NEWS- -Scientists Create Eye Drops That May Repair VisionScientists in Israel claim to have created a solution of nano-particles that can repair damaged corneas and correct both near and far sightedness. The treatment would include corneal mapping done via smartphone.-Homeless Camp Found On Top Of Amtrak StationAuthorities found what appears to be a homeless person's camp built into a cement structure on the top of a California Amtrak station. Officers found a tent and other amenities in the structure. -Woman Arrested For DUI On Way To Her WeddingAn Arizona woman was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) after causing a three car accident while on the way to her wedding. She was released later the same day. -JACKASS OF THE WEEK- -Former 'Officer of the Year' Arrested For Drugs and Child NeglectA Florida sheriff's deputy and his girlfriend were arrested after neighbors reported screaming and gunshots at his home. When officers arrived, they found cocaine, marijuana, spent shell casings on the floor, and bullet holes in the walls. The couple's 2 year old child was also in the home. For those who don't know, I am incredibly accident-prone. I've never had any sort of grace. In fact, it's a miracle I've never broken any bones. But one thing I do end up with are a lot of cuts and scrapes, and we end up keeping quite a large supply of the topic of today's episode in the house at all times From the ubiquitous First-Aid kit staple, to an 80s supergroup, to Penny Lane and her friends in the movie "Almost Famous," the episode is a little all over the place, but don't worry, I'll try to “stick” to the topic as much as possible. Man Pretends To Be Sick To Get A Ride To The HospitalA man in Manchester, England called an ambulance claiming to have reduced sensation in his legs and needing to go to the hospital. When he arrived he admitted that he lied about being sick and just wanted a lift to visit his friend who was a patient there.Russian Parents Fake Their Own Death To Catch Son Who Tried To Hire HitmanWith a striking sense of similarity to a previous story, a couple in Russia faked their own deaths to assist investigators in arresting their 22 year old son who had tried to have them killed. They posed for deathYou-tuber Who Claimed Veganism and Faith Cured Cancer, Dies of CancerA woman who ran a YouTube channel about how she managed to cure her stage-4 breast cancer through prayer and diet, died from her cancer. She claimed that God told her that a vegan and juicing diet would cure her cancer. After she realized her cancer had not gone but spread, she asked her niece to take the videos down, but her niece claimed that her cancer came back because she stopped following God's directions. China Cracks Down On Funeral StrippersApparently in China, it's kind of a thing to have strippers at funerals. The idea is that having strippers will get more people to attend the funeral. Authorities have been trying to crack down on this activity for years. -JACKASS OF THE WEEK- Indian State Offers Free Breast Augmentation To The PoorAn Indian state, known for it's "generosity" has begun a program to provide free cosmetic breast surgery to the poor. They claim that women with large breasts may feel too uncomfortable to go outside for fear of ridicule. They also say that small chested women may feel too uncomfortable to go outside for fear of ridicule.
