You Had To Be There is the debut podcast from Hi Barr. Each episode, we’re giving a different host an assignment: Find and interview an eyewitness to a specific iconic moment in pop culture history…in just 48 hours. The catch? Our hosts have no idea what their assignment will be, so it's impossible to prepare! It’s about learning in real-time, working the phones, talking to experts, calling friends, and figuring it out…all to land the interview & get their story! Come along for the ride!
The You Had To Be There podcast is an absolute delight for anyone who enjoys diving into nostalgic moments and exploring the stories behind them. From the very first episode, I was hooked and eagerly counting down the days until each new installment was released. The concept of the show, where different individuals become "reporters" of iconic moments from the past, is both fun and fascinating. It brings a fresh perspective to well-known events and allows listeners to feel like they are getting an insider's look into history.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is its ability to transport listeners back in time. Through engaging storytelling and interviews with those who were actually present during these iconic moments, the podcast creates a vivid picture of what it was like to be there. It's like taking a time machine back to experience these moments firsthand. The hosts also do an excellent job of curating their content and choosing moments that have both cultural significance and personal anecdotes attached to them.
Another standout aspect of this podcast is its production quality. The audio is crisp, clear, and well-edited, making for an immersive listening experience. The host, Julia Thompson, deserves commendation for her excellent work in conducting interviews and guiding the narrative of each episode. Her enthusiasm for the subject matter shines through in her enthusiastic delivery.
If I had to pinpoint any negatives about this podcast, it would only be that I wish some episodes were longer! There were several instances where I found myself completely engrossed in a particular moment being discussed, only for it to end too soon. However, this can also be seen as a testament to how captivating the content is.
In conclusion, The You Had To Be There podcast is a must-listen for anyone who enjoys exploring history through personal stories and unique perspectives. With its engaging concept, impeccable production quality, and compelling storytelling, it has quickly become one of my favorite podcasts. I highly recommend giving it a listen if you enjoy a mix of nostalgia, cultural significance, and personal anecdotes.

On Sunday, June 1st, 1980, Ted Turner pressed a button—and CNN went live, beaming 24/7 news into homes across America and changing the media landscape forever, while shrinking time and space forever. In this episode, we sent Julia Thompson to track down and interview people who were at CNN's Atlanta headquarters on day one. What follows is the story of a visionary who dared to build a 24-hour news network on a tight budget—in a world dominated by 30-minute broadcasts and networks spending over $100 million a year on their news. With his own money and a vow to stay on the air “until the world ends,” Ted Turner took on the giants. It's a modern-day David and Goliath tale—driven by technology, entertainment, risk, and pure tenacity. This is how CNN was born. This episode features interviews with: Richard Roth (CNN original. Covered Gulf War, Berlin Wall fall, Tiananmen Square protests, and more) John Huey (former Time Inc. Editor-in-Chief, Fortune Editor. WSJ journalist covering CNN's launch) Jack Lechner (TV/Film Producer. Professor. Multiple-Time Jeopardy! Winner) Steven Livingston (Author, The CNN Effect.
