For the unfamiliar, Body Count is lead by rapper Ice T, and their debut album stirred a lot of controversy in the early '90s.  Most famously, the song "Cop Killer" landed the band in the public eye and garnered the scorn of the PMRC, the Police, and parents everywhere.  Body Count married hip-hop and metal in a way that had never been done before and inspired generations of musicians to become more socially aware. We always have time for listener emails, a segment, and we also talk about Death and Death To All, a lot.  So, join us in the I Hate Music drinking game, and take a sip every time we mention Gwar, or a Kyle, or Sebastian, and enjoy this episode.   -------------------- Hosts:  Jason Walton and Nick Wusz. My first experience of censorship in music came with the battle between the Dead Kennedys and Tipper Gore's PMRC (remember the “Parental Advisory Explicit Content” stickers?) which culminated in the obscenity trial in 1985/6 over the artwork for DK's record Frankenchrist. I don't know if anyone remembers but the board members of the PMRC were a bunch of white power brokers funded by Coors Beer, who also just happened to be big supporters of….. Ronald Reagan. The elite keeping the lid on challengers to their power. Some things never change do they?Anyway, forward 25/6 years or so to Moscow and 4 of the founding members of the art collective Pussy Riot perform their inspired Punk Prayer inside the Cathedral of Christ The Saviour. It's still one of the best and most effective pieces of protest performance art that I've seen, although at great personal cost as 3 out of the 4 performers were arrested and convicted. Separation of church and state, censorship, state violence, state control, repression of equality, denial of intersectionality….and still the elite, the despots and the sycophants fear art and artists more than anyone since feudalism, capitalism and all that good stuff began. Diana Burkot is a founding member of Pussy Riot, a multi disciplinary musician and a committed activist. Her music project away from Pussy Riot is called Rosemary Loves A Blackberry and it is a glorious kaleidoscope of performance art that brings together diverse instruments, beats, imagery and lyrics that open your mind to eclectic and experimental interpretations and is at home with any industrial die hards, synth lovers or lovers of the darker, magical sounds from the other side…..It's a huge honour to have her on the show.https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. Stuck In The Middle - A Gen X Podcast

Warning, Parental Advisory, Slackers!Back in 1985, a group of politically connected women banded together to create the “Parent's Music Resource Center”. Led by Tipper Gore, wife of future Vice President Al Gore, and Susan Baker, wife of then Treasury Secretary James Baker, the group sought to clamp down on what it perceived to be an increase of disturbing lyrical content in popular music.  The main focus was on lyrics containing references to sex, drugs, violence, and the occult. To drive home their point, the PMRC created a list dubbed “The Filthy 15” - an eclectic list of recording artists spanning multiple genres. Somehow, artists like Prince, Cyndi Lauper, & Madonna, were grouped with bands like Mercyful Fate, Venom, and Judas Priest. The opposition to PMRC came in the form of some strange bedfellow - three very different musicians in their own right - who believed strongly in freedom of artistic expression. In what has become a legendary Senate hearing, Dee Snider from Twisted Sister, Frank Zappa, and John Denver, all hailing from vastly different backgrounds, made their case against the PMRC.  We also take a look at how some of the musicians on The Filthy 15 feel decades later - has age (and parenthood), moderated their views on censorship or do they still hold to the same ideals of their younger, wilder selves?

What the Riff?!?

While we may think of the German band the Scorpions as an 80's metal band, they started much earlier - way back in 1965.  Things didn't really come together for the group until the 1978-1992 personnel lineup of Klaus Meine on lead vocals, Rudolph Schenker on rhythm guitar, Mattias Jabs on lead guitar, Francis Buchholz on bass, and Herman Rarebell on percussion.  By the time that the live album entitled World Wide Live came out in 1985, the group had established itself as an international commercial success.Recorded during their 1984 world tour, "World Wide Live" showcases the band at their best, and is a testament to their skill as live performers.  The album was produced by Dieter Dierks, and was initially released as a 2-LP vinyl set, a cassette, and a VHS of tour footage showing off the band's stage presence.  Folks, you got your money's worth when you originally purchased this album! From the high intensity of rockers like "Big City Nights" and "Rock You Like a Hurricane," to the raw emotion of ballads like "Still Loving You," the Scorpions deliver a performance that connects with their audience.  Hearing the live versions gives you a sense of the band in a way that is hard to capture from the studio arrangements.Lynch leads this journey back to 1985, when the Scorpions were rocking the world like a...well...they were rocking the world. Big City NightsThis song from "Love at First Sting" leads off side two of the first LP.  Schenker and Meine composed this one, as they did with many Scorpions songs.  This homage to night life in the city was released as the third single from their studio album, but failed to chart. No One Like YouOriginally appearing on their 1982 album, "Blackout,"  this track deals with infatuation and desire.  Despite its only reaching number 65 on the Billboard Hot 100, it is one of the songs that established the Scorpions as premiere hard rockers of the 80's.Still Loving YouLong before the hair metal ballad became a trope, the Scorpions demonstrated their ability to handle a slower song while still maintaining intensity and raw emotion.  The lyrics are of a guy struggling to convince the girl he has lost to give their love a second chance.Rock You Like a HurricaneThe Scorpions' signature song first appeared on "Love at First Sting" the year before this live album was released.  It reached number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100, a rare Scorpions song to break the top 40.  The track leads off side three of the album.  The risqué video would be a prime exhibit of the PMRC in their quest for more parental control over child access to music videos. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Crazy by Patsy ClineA film called "Sweet Dreams" chronicles the life of country music star Patsy Cline, and was in American theaters in this month. STAFF PICKS:Whole of the Moon by The WaterboysWayne gets the staff picks started this week with the best-selling song from an overlooked British-Irish rock-folk band.  Cerebral and artsy, with lyrics like "I saw the crescent, you saw the whole of the moon," the song is about individuals with rare depth.  The Waterboys reformed in 2000, and can still be seen touring, primarily in Europe.Lay Your Hands On Me by The Thompson TwinsRob brings us a song from the British group that has neither members named Thompson nor twins.  It went to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Thompson Twins member Tom Bailey has said that the song takes religious ritual as a metaphor for the connection between artist, performer, and artist. It's Only Love by Bryan Adams and Tina TurnerBruce's staff pick is the sixth and final single from Adam's amazingly popular album "Reckless," and also appears on Turner's "Tina Live in Europe" released in 1988.  Loaded with melancholy and anger from a breakup, the song encourages the jilted lover to remember - it's only love.  This song went to number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100.Money for Nothing by Dire StraitsLynch features a signature song from Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits, with a strong helping of Sting to boot.  This Grammy Award-winning track was a staple of MTV, and spent three weeks atop the US pop charts.  The lyrics are a conversation between two working-class men as they watch music videos. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Tears In a Prophet's Dream by Celtic FrostThis Swiss heavy metal bands instrumental takes us out for this week's podcast. "Unless you grew up during the PMRC hearings, I don't think you can really understand what a massive impact it had as teenagers watched Dee testify before congress about the importance of freedom of speech," editor Rantz A. Hoseley explains. "Metal and rock preached rebellion and fighting back in the song lyrics, but here was the only frontman who was walking the walk. In a world where you thought that adults said one thing and did another, it was the moment where you could believe. Yes, there are people out there who will fight for what is right, against all odds, no matter what the cost. It's a story that is more vital today than ever."

Geoff Mayfield has had a long and illustrious career in the music business. Starting as an Editor for a Columbus, OH music magazine called “Focus”, it wasn't long before Geoff found himself behind the microphone at WBBY jazz radio. Geoff's background in both music journalism and radio stood out to an executive at Camelot Music, the mall-based music retailer based out of Canton, OH, and soon he found himself working at Camelot's corporate offices. It was at Camelot that Geoff first became aware of Tower Records as executives talked about Tower Records going into Manhattan. Also, reading a profile of Russ Solomon in Rolling Stone magazine sparked Geoff's interest in the West Coast-based company. A speech about Tipper Gore's PMRC record labeling, written for Camelot's CEO led to both an “Atta Boy” from Russ Solomon and indirectly led to Geoff's being hired by Billboard Magazine as their Music & Video Retail Editor. During Geoff's time with Billboard, both as Retail Editor and then as Director of Charts, he was able to build relationships with many at Tower. Even after Tower's demise, Geoff kept in close contact with many and played a significant role in both their life and in some cases, the celebration of lives well lived. Geoff still stays active as he's been teaching at the Los Angeles College of Music for the last 7 years as well as still contributing to both Variety and Billboard. Join us for a wide-ranging conversation about how music used to be purchased and beyond.

It's another look at the world of the worst albums ever made, as we present another Trve. Crvp. Pop!, searching for the most awful moment in the history of music. This week, Steve and Sam are rating and ranking Fly on the Wall, the 10th studio album from hard rock legends Ac/DC, released on the 28th of June 1985. The 80's had been kind to AC/DC initially, their 7th album Back in Black was one of the biggest albums ever made, shifting 25 millions copies in the US alone. But as the decade wore on, so the profile of the band began to wane somewhat. 25 million sales became 4 million, which then became "only" 1 million as they continued to release album in the first half of the decade. By 1985, with glam metal on the rise, AC/DC were considered by many to have peaked, the band themselves wanted nothing to do with MTV ready pop-metal and decided to self produce their next record. The result was an album in Fly on the Wall that is usually cited as their weakest moment... but is it really that bad? Or did a link to a serial killer, the ire of the PMRC and a bunch of confusing videos starring the band, a bunch of goofy actors and a cartoon fly all combine to kill it?  ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Summary: Prepare to travel back in time and embrace the dayglo technicolor of the 1980's, a time when Miami Vice impacted fashion, the PMRC became the best promoters of heavy metal in the world, and JUDAS PRIEST achieved mainstream success and popularity with a shift towards bigger, heavier, more modern metal soundscapes which has become their calling card (with the exception of that one keyboard & synth laden album from '86 that always seems to draw flak, even from fans).   Get ready to “drop the needle” on some quality 80's metal loaded with “extra junts” while learning the consensus regarding “slimy gray meat sliders” and fix yourself a “PB&KY sandwich” (to go) before you ride off on the dot matrix “printer paper road out into the sunset” while trying to comprehend why the PMRC co-founder's husband “talks like Paul Stanley” YET does not wear the gloves of shame.  Prepare to give “old stretch” a workout before reaching the “Love Zone” (which is right next to the “birth hole”) and JOIN US for JUDAS PRIEST VOL. In this episode we will raise our fist in the air and shout at the devil.  The year is 1983 and Mötley Crüe are creating a legend around themselves as the very worst of rock n roll's bad boys. They've been thrown off a Kiss tour for bad behaviour. According to legend, they've upset AC/DC and Van Halen so much on tour they have to be locked in a trailer and that trailer is then elevated metres off the ground by a crane so they can't escape while the other bands play. In the middle of this maelstrom the Crüe release their second album, ‘Shout at the Devil.' And things just get wilder.Along with Nikki Sixx, Vince Neil, Mick Marrs and Tommy Lee this episode features guest mentions of such luminaries as Hawkwind, Moby Dick, Tom Zutaut, Ronald Reagan, Geoff Workman, PMRC, Tipper Gore, The Beatles, The Brady Bunch, Pamela Anderson and Joey Tempest. Sauces:https://norselandsrock.com/shout-at-the-devil-motley-crue/The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band By  Tommy Lee, Mick Mars, Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx and Neil Strausshttps://ew.com/article/2015/12/22/motley-crue-nikki-sixx-stories-behind-songs/https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/pmrcs-filthy-15-where-are-they-now-60601/judas-priest-eat-me-alive-180934/

Dee Snider steps Behind The Rope. Dee chats about what it was like to front Twisted Singer, one of the biggest Metal bands to emerge from the 80s and have two of the biggest Rock Anthems of all time, “We're Not Gonna Take It” and “I Wanna Rock”. Dee gives his nod of approval for current music and chats Beyonce, Katy Perry, Pink and Christina Aguilera and one epic Diva who does not make the list. Dee talks the rock star lifestyle, taking on Tipper Gore and The PMRC, being the first “Drag Queen” a la heels, rouge and heavy eye makeup before it was “en vogue”, accepted or Drag Race was even a mere thought and why certain artists like Lady Gaga should, and probably would, pay homage to “the first”, and why Twisted Sister is not in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Finally Dee talks reality TV - Growing Up Twisted, Celebrity Apprentice and his recent star turn as “Doll” on The Masked Singer. @deesnider @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef BONUS & AD FREE EPISODES Available at - www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope BROUGHT TO YOU BY: GREENPAN - greenPan.us (Use Code VELVET For 30% Off Your Entire Order Plus Free Shipping On Orders Over $99)  INDEED - indeed.com/velvet (Start Hiring Now. Covid ain't gonna stop us, ya'll. Rubin and Don still managed to get an episode to you despite the plague trying to stop us. In an example of Guerilla Podcasting, they are joined by Don's wife, Cyndi to discuss the PMRC and the senate hearing on the evils of porn rock. A list of which consisted of 20% Prince songs. Then we go into the stupidity that is back masking and the ultimate outcome when the heavy metal band Judas Priest were put on trial for supposedly driving their fans to commit suicide using subliminal messages.
