At the Monte-Carlo Television Festival, FRANCE 24's Genie Godula sits down with British actress Joanne Froggatt, best known as Anna Bates in "Downton Abbey". They chat about her new series "Last Light" with "Lost" star Matthew Fox. Also on the show, we take a look at a cult French film made by a seemingly cursed director. Jean Eustache's "The Mother and the Whore" is making its return to the big screen, 50 years after it was released.
In the late 1800s, Captain Martin and Anna Bates - both approaching 8 feet tall - were the stars of PT Barnum's traveling show, visiting cities from the east coast to the west, and entertaining royalty in Europe. But both attempts by the couple to have a child ended in death. With no heirs, many have wondered what happened to the couple's fortune, their outsized gold and diamond jewelry, and gifts made to them by queens and presidents. www.ohiomysteries.com feedback@ohiomysteries.com www.patreon.com/ohiomysteries www.twitter.com/mysteriesohio www.facebook.com/ohiomysteries Music: Riverrun (Reprise), by Nick Frank. https://www.facebook.com/nicholasfrankmusic Additional music: Audionautix- The Great Unknown, and The Great Phospher- Daniel Birch

Welcome to Episode 38 of Sit & Sew Radio, a Quilt Addicts Anonymous podcast. This week we are excited to have quilt blogger and traveler Anna Bates on the show. We found Anna on YouTube when we came across her Quilt Roadies channel. More than a year ago Anna and her husband, G, bought a small motorhome and decided to hit the road with their dog, Enzo, to see the country – and, naturally, all of the quilt shops along the way! The couple decided to document their quilt stops with videos on YouTube to promote all of the wonderful, and unique, brick and mortar quilt shops out there. We are also excited here at Quilt Addicts Anonymous to announce that our limited edition Medallion Star quilt kits, in both Lyla Damask and Pixie Dots colorways, are ready to ship! We’ve talked about Medallion Star, the latest pattern by Stephanie Soebbing, on the podcast before. Just type in MEDALLION10 when you check out at shop.quiltaddictsanonymous.com to save 10 percent on your kit! The coupon expires on January 4, 2018. Anna Bates, Quilt Blogger and Traveler Anna and G are originally from Sisters, Oregon, recognized as the quilting capital of Oregon and home of the largest outdoor quilt show in the world each July – the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. Anna and G have been retired for about five years, and a couple years ago they bought a small motor home and decided to travel across the United States. Anna, a quilt blogger of five years at wooliemammoth.blogspot.com, decided to document her travels by highlighting the many, and we do mean many, brick-and-mortar quilt shops her and her husband visit. That led to the creation of Quilt Roadies YouTube channel, which has more than 5,000 subscribers in just over a year since they began. Anna also documents her travels for TheQuiltShow.com in a blog called Anna & G on the Road. They’ve already been to California, Oregon, Washington, Utah, Idaho, Arizona, Nebraska and South Dakota. They are planning to get to Texas and Oklahoma soon and eventually the northern Midwestern states. But first, her and G are headed on a quilting cruise to begin 2018. In the interview Anna talks about some of the joys, and pleasant surprises, of her travels. “Each shop has its own personality, and that comes from the owner and the culture of the community,” Anna said. Anna also gives some of her tips for sewing on the road, and talks about how she plans out her projects and fits in her sewing into her travels. She specifically mentions her cordless Panasonic iron she says she can’t live without. Follow Anna on Instragram at wooliemammoth53 and also find her on Facebook.
Elizabeth Glickfeld is a design writer and lecturer currently based in London. She's the co-founder, along with Anna Bates, of Dirty Furniture, a new kind of design magazine that looks at "when design leaves the showroom" by focusing each issue on a specific piece of furniture. She's also written for various publications including Eye, Design Issues, Domus and Frieze magazine. Previously, she was a student in The Royal College of Art's Critical Writing in Art and Design program and was a lecturer in design theory and history at Swinburne University in Melbourne, Australia. In this episode, Elizabeth and I talk about her background in design and writing, the goals of Dirty Furniture, and experimenting with new forms of design writing. Joanne Froggatt was taken to the nation's hearts when she played Anna Bates, the lady's maid in Downton Abbey. One of the storylines which had a huge impact, and won her a Golden Globe, showed the aftermath of her being raped. Now she takes on similar territory but a very different character in Liar, a new ITV thriller in which she plays Laura, a woman who says she's been raped. She talks to Samira about her choice of roles and not shying away from difficult subjects. Black Swan and The Wrestler director Darren Aronofsky discusses his controversial new film Mother! The film, which stars Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, was booed, and cheered, when it premiered at Venice Film Festival this week, and the reviews have been similarly divisive with some hailing it as a masterpiece and others a hyperbolic mess.As Classic FM celebrates its 25th anniversary, Quentin Letts of the Daily Mail and The Spectator's Kate Chisholm consider what influence it has had on the coverage of classical music on the radio, and the impact its arrival had on BBC Radio 3.Presenter: Samira Ahmed Producer: Jerome Weatherald.
*Warning: This episode contains spoilers for *Dark Angel. Fans of “Downton Abbey’s” Anna Bates were likely spooked by Joanne Froggatt’s character in “Dark Angel”: the manipulative real-life serial killer Mary Ann Cotton. In this episode, MASTERPIECE Studio dissects Mary Ann’s motives, and pulls back the curtain on Joanne Froggatt’s darkest role to date.
It's all about Oscar nominations on our latest episode! For days, you've been writing to me with your questions about this year's nods—does the Academy hate Leo? Does the Academy have a problem with black actors? (Unless it actually has a problem with Walt Disney instead?) I tracked down an eminent voice in the world of film and got all of the answers.Plus!Answer Dad fixes the whole Anna/Bates/assault situation in less than two minutes. We reveal the secrets behind the Academy Awards seating chart: Who gets to sit in the “golden triangle”—assuming that's a good thing?Ande is back! And she's probably hate-watching the same TV show you are! It's all here, and it's all for you.
[S04, E03] - Mrs. Hughes does not mess with manipulative maids -- she annihilates them! (well... and writes them a good reference... but let's not focus on that). Good riddance Edna! Meanwhile Edith has most definitely given up her V-Card (yay!) and unfortunately got caught in her walk of shame (who hasn't been there?!). We love Rosamund's new-found love of jazz and dancing and wonder if she has had her own walk of shame story. The damsels continue to examine the Anna/Bates storyline and wonder how thin the line is between stalking and romance with the glamourous pirate. Overall, we're happy to see Mary's power color taking over! So, throw on your rompers and grab a glass of champagne (not 5!) and listen to the latest podcast of Downton Gabby!
Kelly and Tom celebrate the Year of the Twat in their recap of Downton Abbey S3:E3. They discuss O’Brien’s pickled bangs, Isobel’s Whore Institute, the adventures of Anna Bates, PI, the reason it’s hard to call Branson ‘Tom,’ McG’s unexpected ascendance to the show’s official voice of reason, the ins and outs of European car rental in 1920, and why the chronically understaffed Downton Abbey has such a generous PTO policy. Plus, Kelly won’t shut up about Ever After, Tom explains the origins of the treadmill, and everyone feels just awful for Edith. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
