We're journeying from the jungles of Darkest Peru to Jolly Ol' London Town in this adaptation of the beloved children's stories by Michael Bond. The Bond is strong with Q actor Ben Whishaw who voices the precocious titular bear. The cast is stacked with talent, including Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi, and Nicole Kidman in key roles, with Michael Gambon and Imelda Stauton lending their voice talents. The director is Paul King (he of The Mighty Boosh), here helming the picture to critical and commercial success, to the tune of two BAFTA nominations and over $300 million at the box office. But are our hosts as enamored with the end result, or did we find it… unbearable? Exit the intro, pursued by a bear: Paddington Bear. Oh, bother. Three Paddington films. Sarah Watt, Jeremy Downing and William Chen discuss Paddington (2014), Paddington 2 (2017) and Paddington in Peru (2024) and our general reactions to the films, especially those of us who haven't seen a Paddington film before. We talk about the work of writer and director Paul King, including The Mighty Boosh and Wonka (2023), and praise the work of first-time director Dougal Wilson. We discuss the cast and performances in the films, including the work of Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Emily Mortimer, Ben Wishaw, Jessica Hynes, Matt Lucas, Peter Capaldi, Nicole Kidman, Hugh Grant, Olivia Colman, Julie Walters, Michael Gambon, Jim Broadbent, Brendan Gleeson and Noah Taylor. We praise the films' visuals, especially Paddington's animation. This extends into a discussion of live-action, special effects, visual effects and computer generation. We touch on Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024), the work of Ray Harryhausen - Jason and the Argonauts (1963) and Clash of the Titans (1981), the original Godzilla (1954), King Kong (1933), Jurassic Park (1993), Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999), Doctor Who (1963-) and The Thing (1982).

It's the start of a big new year of podcasts from Rosebud, and we're beginning with a real treat for you - an interview with one of Britain's most successful actors: Hugh Bonneville. During his ordinary childhood in a comfortable, middle class home in Blackheath, in which showing off was strongly discouraged, Hugh plundered the family dressing-up box and made his schoolfriends put on plays. At school he joined the drama club and eventually got a place in the National Youth Theatre. We find out about how Hugh got into the industry, but also about his parents, his first dog, and his interest in theology. With huge thanks to Hugh for his time, energy and wonderful stories. The recent Paddington Bear film series has been a delight to audiences, prompting a renewed interest in the famous bear – and even seeing the late Queen get in on the action. Filled with charm and humour, the third film in the series Paddington in Peru hits cinemas on January 1. Most well known as Lord Grantham on Downton Abbey, Hugh Bonneville stars, alongside the loveable Paddington Bear, as Mr Brown. Speaking with Francesca Rudkin ahead of the film's release, Bonneville explained Paddington's stint at "marmalade rehab" was behind the seven-year gap between films. Hey everyone, welcome back to another review and today, we'll be discussing the sequel to one of the most consistent franchises in films right now. Paddington and Paddington 2 are both some of the best family movies of the last decade. The thought of doing a third film is definitely terrifying because of how it could affect this franchise's track record but also because Paul King wasn't coming back for this third entry, although he still has a story credit. He went off to work in the Chocolate Factory. As I'm now studying in the UK, I had the chance to see Paddington in Peru. Does this movie cement the Paddington trilogy as one of the best of all-time or is the absence of Paul King felt? Find out in this review!Paddington in Peru:Directed by: Dougal WilsonScreenplay by: Mark Burton and Jon Foster & James LamontScreen Story by: Paul King and Simon Farnaby and Mark Burton"Paddington Bear" Created by: Michael BondProduced by: Rosie AlisonExecutive Producers: Jeffrey Clifford, Ron Halpern, Paul King, Naoya Kinoshita, Dan Macrae, Anna Marsh, Tim WellspringMusic by: Dario MarianelliCinematography by: Erik WilsonEditing by: Úna Ní DhonghaíleCasting by: Robert SterneProduction Design by: Andy KellyCostume Design by: Charlotte WalterCast: Ben Whishaw, Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer, Antonio Banderas, Olivia Colman, Julie Walters, Samuel Joslin, Madeleine Harris Synopsis: Paddington travels to Peru to visit his beloved Aunt Lucy, who now resides at the Home for Retired Bears. This week's Empire Podcast isn't so much jam-packed as marmaladen with great guests, as Chris Hewitt talks to Paddington In Peru stars Hugh Bonneville and Emily Mortimer (the new Mrs. Brown) about tarantulas, Paddington tantrums, and shooting in the wilds of Basingstoke [20:47 - 35:27 approx]; the great British director Andrea Arnold about her new film, Bird, working with non-actors, and shooting in Gravesend [51:56 - 1:07:39 approx]; and Agatha All Along showrunner Jac Schaeffer, in an extended excerpt from our spoiler special interview, about [SPOILER], [BIGGER SPOILER] and shooting in [SPOILER]. Listen to that one only once you've seen Agatha All Along, naturally. [1:34:29 - 1:50:10 approx] Then, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and Alex Godfrey for a merry old show in which they break down their viewing habits, discuss the week's movie news (and yes, this was recorded before the news broke about Simon Kinberg writing a new Star Wars trilogy; we'll discuss that next week), and review Paddington In Peru, Blitz, Bird, Piece By Piece, and Red One. Orange you glad you picked this episode? Enjoy.
In a star-studded Screentime this week John Fardy talks to Olivia Colman, Antonio Banderas and Hugh Bonneville about the return of the world's favourite bear in ‘Paddington in Peru'. John also speaks with Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña about the arrival of the musical drama ‘Emilia Pérez' on Netflix. Plus, Chris Wasser reviews ‘Bird' and the Pharell Williams movie ‘Piece by Piece'.
Simon goes on a leafy adventure with Hugh Bonneville to talk ‘Paddington In Peru', the latest addition to the most kind and polite of all cinematic universes—and for those of us who need cheering up this week, their conversation is just the tonic. The film sees Britain's favourite bear journey back to his native land with the Brown family on a quest to visit Aunt Lucy. Pass the marmalade sandwiches. Plus, Mark reviews ‘Blitz', Steve McQueen's wartime drama starring Saoirse Ronan as a mother attempting to navigate a bombarded London with her young son; Andrea Arnold's free-spirited social realist drama ‘Bird' starring Barry Keoghan; and, as we enter the Christmas Corridor, ‘Red One' in which the North Pole's head of Security (played by Dwayne Johnson) teams up with an infamous bounty hunter (Chris Evans) to save a kidnapped Santa Claus. We're back for the first episode of Peter Capaldi's final year — a simple, well-told tale of Girl Meets Girl, Girl Becomes Puddle, Girl Loses Girl and, finally, Girl Goes off with Her Tutor on a Series of Adventures in Time and Space. Welcome aboard, Bill Potts. It's The Pilot. Notes and links Friend from the Future was a promotional short designed to introduce Bill Potts first broadcast during Match of the Day on 23 April 2016, nearly a year before this episode aired. You can see the entire short here. Peter mentions the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Skin of Evil as another TV episode containing a high-concept puddle. It's famously not very good, as Joe and Nathan discovered in this episode of Untitled Star Trek Project. You'll be relieved and probably unsurprised to learn that Nathan is wrong: John Peel doesn't claim that Genesis of the Daleks took place in 1831. However, TARDIS Wikia dates it as set in the 15th or 16th centuries, probably because in The Daleks, one of the Daleks claims that there were two races on Skaro 500 years ago. But the whole idea is absolutely enervating, don't you think? The squishy thing Todd mentions as a possible companion for the Doctor is, of course, Mr Huffle from The Return of Doctor Mysterio. The Doctor does apparently take it with him at the end of the story. And Pearl Mackie married her wife Kam Chhokar on 4 May this year. Here's a wedding photo from Tumblr. Douglas is Cancelled is Steven Moffat's most recent TV show — a four-part miniseries starring Hugh Bonneville, Karen Gillan and Alex Kingston, about a middle-aged male TV personality who is overheard making a sexist joke at a friend's wedding. Worth a look. Follow us Nathan is on Bluesky at @nathanbottomley.bsky.social and James is at @ohjamessellwood.bsky.social; Todd is on X as @toddbeilby. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. You can follow Flight Through Entirety on Mastodon and Bluesky, as well as on X and Facebook. Our website is at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we'll invent a massively high-concept backstory for you which prevents you from ever truly realising yourself as a person. And more You can find links to all of the podcasts we're involved in on our podcasts page. But here's a summary of where we're up to right now. 500 Year Diary is our latest new Doctor Who podcast, going back through the history of the show and examining new themes and ideas. It's first season came out early this year, under the title New Beginnings. Check it out. It will be back for a second season early in 2025. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire has broadcast our hot takes on every new episode of Doctor Who since November last year, and it will be back again in 2025 for Season 2. There's also Startling Barbara Bain, our Space: 1999 commentary podcast. We've covered the first six episodes of Series 1; Episode 7 should be out some times in the next couple of weeks. The Blakes 7 podcast Maximum Power has been on hiatus for a while, but arrangements for the recording of Series D are well underway, and we will definitely have some new episodes for your before the end of the year. And finally there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. Last week, they took a trip with Kirk, Spock and McCoy to the Planet of Space Ancient Rome in Bread and Circuses.

We may not be able to review Netflix's Supacell until the next Pilot+ but that didn't stop the show's creator, Rapman, from dropping by to talk all about his Black superhero saga. And while we're talking about things we couldn't review, there's a whole debacle about The Bear (a Bearbacle?) that plays out this week, so if you're joining us to find out what Carmy and the gang have been up to, you may be disappointed. We do join Hugh Bonneville for Douglas Is Cancelled, however, and head off to Spain with Eva Longoria for Land Of Women. So there's that, at least.

Book Vs. Movie: PaddingtonThe 1958 Children's Book Vs. the 2014 MovieThe Margos are feeling very British in this episode! English author Michael Bond created Paddington Bear, who first appeared in Bond's 1958 book A Bear Called Paddington and has since become a beloved character in numerous books, television series, and films. Paddington is a polite and curious bear from Peru who wears a duffle coat and a floppy hat. He often carries a suitcase with a label that reads, "Please look after this bear. Thank you." He was named after the London train station where the Brown family found him. The 2014 "Paddington" movie focuses on Paddington's journey to find a home and the bonds he forms with the Brown family. The 2001 romance drama, Iris, captures the life of novelist Iris Murdoch between flashbacks of her youth and her present-day battle with Alzheimer's. This movie's poignant and effective tug on the heartstrings is no doubt a testament to the stellar cast including Kate Winslet, Dame Judi Dench, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Bonneville, and Penelope Wilton. This film is melancholy, but it packs a punch in just over 90 minutes. Tune in to hear how it ranks out of all 46 Kate Winslet movies!WebsiteInstagramMerch Support the show
