Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues   Susanna Clarke: “Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell.” Susanna Clarke in 2006 Susanna Clarke, author of the classic fantasy novel, Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, interviewed September 12, 2005 in the KPFA studios. Back in the fall of 2004, a new fantasy novel, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by a newcomer, Susannah Clarke, became an instant classic, finding its way to best-seller lists in the U.K. and United.States, and winning the Hugo Award for 2004's best novel at the 2005  World Science Fiction Convention. This interview with Susannah Clarke was recorded while on tour for the paperback edition of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, and has not aired in two decades. Both Christopher Hampton and Julian Fellowes took stabs at writing a film adaptation of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, but both were unable to translate the very long novel into a screenplay, and then New Line cancelled the project. It was eventually developed into a seven -part miniseries for the BBC, and aired in both the United States and Britain in 2015. It is now streaming on Amazon Prime. After the publication of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, and the awards, Susannah Clarke continued to work on the sequel, set in the same universe a few years later, but became bogged down, almost sentence by sentence, as chronic fatigue syndrome took its toll. By 2015, after visiting the set of the BBC production, she decided to go another route, and went back to another manuscript that likely pre-dated her best-seller. That novel, Piranesi, was published to mostly favorable reviews in 2020. She is now working on a third novel. Complete Interview.   Dawn Porter Dawn Porter, documentary filmmaker, in conversation with host Richard Wolinsky, recorded September 11, 2023. Dawn Porter's work has appeared on ESPN, HBO, Netflix, PBS and other streamers. Her film Trapped, focusing on abortion clinics in the South, won a special prize at Sundance in 2016 along with a Peabody Award. Her 2013 documentary, Gideon's Army, her first film, focusing on public defender attorneys in the South, is now part of the US Deparment of State's American Film Showcase. She is also the director of John Lewis: Good Trouble, which focuses on the late Congressman and activist.

Join Carl and  British country house historian Curt DiCamillo for a look into the world of the Edwardian country house.  Audiences became fascinated in these houses through the blockbuster Julian Fellowes series "Downton Abbey" and his earlier film "Gosford Park",  with their colliding worlds of upstairs and downstairs and interlocking social dramas. Curt discusses this fascinating period in British history and how the country house in Edwardian times brought society closer to a modern age. Curt explains how country houses as estates for the British aristocracy evolved over centuries and how they reached their height in the reign of King Edward VII, who took the throne following the death of his mother, Queen Victoria. The country house greatly expanded during this time and some interiors reflected influences from Britain's growing empire.  Grand dinners, shooting parties, and elegant tea parties were all backdrops to great social intrigue and sometimes scandal.  In this show, Curt shares several examples of great Edwardian country houses (including one current royal estate), what they looked like, how they operated, and how they can be visited today.  The Edwardian period was a glittering one, much like America's Gilded Age, but a short one, which vanished from view as Britain and Western Europe entered a world-changing war.  Related show with Curt DiCamillo:  The British Crown Jewels: History and Mystery

In Gosford Park, it's the victim who is unlikeable and that adds an interesting dimension to the murder mystery storyline.-V."Notice where your sympathy and empathy lie. This week on the SciFi TV Rewatch podcast we discuss Iris Maplethorpe's reaction to the time travel scenario and Mannix's somewhat dubious KYAL'd mantra. It also appears we must question the seance scene and whether the supernatural does, in fact, play a role here.  In our What We're Watching segment, Dave watches the Julian Fellowes period drama Belgravia, and Wayne checks out the horror film A Quiet Place. In Listener Feedback, Alan in England sends us a helpful graphic that explains the Harker/Mannix family tree, and Fred from the Netherlands points out that the seance may not be what we thought it was.  Remember to join the genre television and film discussion on the SciFi TV Rewatch Facebook group for the latest genre television show news and podcast releases. Julian Fellowes, creator of Downton Abbey, Belgravia and Gosford Park, has recorded a special version of the festive poem ‘The Night Before Christmas' for visually impaired children to enjoy this Christmas. Lord Fellowes is a Vice President of the RNIB as well as President of the RNIB's Talking Books Library. He was delighted to record the poem, which is a festive favourite of his. He is passionate about ensuring literature is accessible to all visually impaired children living across the UK.  RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey caught up with Julian just after he had recorded the reading of the poem The Night Before Christmas to find out why he first started supporting the work of the RNIB and what it means to him being a Vice President of the RNIB and President of the RNIB Talking Books Library.   Toby began by asking Julian when he first came across the poem The Night Before Christmas, whether the poem was a favourite of the Fellowes family and one that he remembered hearing or reading as a child.   Julian then gave Toby an insight into some of the Fellowes family Christmas traditions, before talking about writing for both film and television and answering that question we all might have as to whether we will see the Crawley family again on the small or big screen. Lord Fellowes' reading of The Night Before Christmas is now available on DAISY CD and USB sticks from RNIB's Talking Books Library or as a download through the RNIB's Reading Services website - https://readingservices.rnib.org.uk (Please note that you must be a member of the RNIB's Talking Books Library and RNIB's Reading Services to access the recording of the reading.) Lord Fellowes' reading of The Night Before Christmas will also be broadcast on RNIB Connect Radio during the last hour of the Afternoon Edition show on Friday 22 December between 5pm - 6pm and again on Christmas Eve at 8pm.  Image shows Toby and Julian, who is holding a red book, stood side by side in front of  the RNIB Connect logo

This week on Mummy Dearest , we unwrap the season 2 finale of the greatest show of all time: The Gilded Age. The finale was a perfect bow on top of a beautiful gift of a season. It had everything we've come to love and expect from The Gilded Age: Duke drama, fake friendships, Nathan Lane's southern accent, crossing the street, and Agnes being angry. What we didn't expect was a caked up George Russell sauntering around his office with skin tight clothes. Nor did we expect where the Duke ended up on the opening night of the Met and the Academy! This week gave us all the things we've come to love about "The Gilded Age": back cancer, floral arrangements, luncheon, 5 minutes of CGI fireworks, Bertha and George in their bedroom, scams, and another sister hug between Agnes and Ada. There are so many things unfolding with only one episode left! Will Marian marry cousin Douche-elle? Will Agnes leave the house? Will Maud Beaton be brought to justice? Will Bertha wear a gorgeous dress to the opening of the MET? I think we're safe to bet all the Van Rhijn money on that one. Carey Mulligan was rejected from several drama schools when she was a teenager. But instead of giving up, she sent a letter to a famous actor she'd met once. That letter led to a networking dinner, then to an audition for “Pride and Prejudice", and ultimately, her first role. Today, Carey shares how being bold in the face of rejection landed her in films on the big screen.  In this episode, Carey shares:  Why she reached out to Julian Fellowes for advice on pursuing acting How she navigated the industry without formal training or experience The hardest play she's ever done – and why her director almost canceled it Why doing a press tour 3.5 weeks after having her kid helped her postpartum depression Her favorite episode of her new Amazon-exclusive podcast, “I Hear Fear”
