This one was a lot of fun to research, but it is indeed a sad story that I think might have benefited from a different type of therapy. Elissa Kerrill Serial Killing : A Podcast P.O. In today’s episode on Gateways to Awakening, I speak with my friend Jon Amiel, a distinguished director, writer, and producer with a remarkable career in theatre, film, and television. After spending a decade rising from fringe theatre to the Royal Shakespeare Company, Jon transitioned to television, where he made significant strides at the BBC, culminating with the award-winning "Silent Twins" and the multi-award-winning "Singing Detective." Jon's success continued in the film industry over the next 15 years, directing major feature films such as "Sommersby" with Jodie Foster and Richard Gere, "Copycat" with Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter, "Entrapment" with Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones, "The Man Who Knew Too Little" with Bill Murray, "The Core" with Aaron Eckhart and Hilary Swank, and "Creation" with Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly. Jon's attraction to various genres is driven by his curiosity and desire to explore different facets of storytelling, approaching each genre with unique techniques and perspectives. As a mentor, Jon frequently advises aspiring directors and writers to focus on authenticity in storytelling and to develop a strong personal voice. We talk about the following and so much more: ✅ What he spends most of his time thinking about and why ✅ What, in his opinion, makes a good story and why? ✅ What inspired his journey into the world of film - an in particular directing? ✅ As a mentor and advisor to many film directors and writers, what advice does he find himself giving most frequently ✅ What draws him to a particular project, and how does he approach each genre differently ✅ What the creative process was like bringing such a gripping story like Copycat to life If you’d like to join the waitlist for my next coaching program, sign up @ www.InnerKnowingSchool.com Please tag us and tell us what you loved! Abby continues her story of the Silent Twins, June and Jennifer Gibbons, and their later lives and time in Broadmoor Hospital for the Criminally Insane. Ashlyn talks about the incredibly sad story of Cierra Breland and the abusive relationship that led to her disappearance. This episode has everything: pronunciations for Hozier, bags of doom, empty sleeves, an opening for a psychologist on the show with silly little glasses, sextuplets, golden-doodles, a cool town name in Indiana, and the wild wackiness of the criminal system. June and Jennifer Gibbons were born on April 11th of 1963. Even as infants the two had a truly unique bons, and even insisted on being nursed together. As they grew into toddlers, they made a pact that they would only even speak to each other, and to eliminate the chance of someone over hearing them and understanding, they even had their own language that they invented and only they understood it. their parents; Gloria and Aubrey tried to do right by their daughters but, understandably, when they would sit down to dinner every night and ask their "twinies" questions about how their day had been , and the girls would just stare down at their plate, it began to take its toll. as the girls got older, they decided to try a life of doing drugs, burglary, and having sex.....with the same boy of course. The girls ended up having to spend some time in a facility designed to help and reform them. the had tried separating them on a couple of occasions and the consequences were absolutely awful. It was beginning to look like, in order for even one of them to try and live a normal life, they would have to be separated.....More permanently i would love to hear your thoughts on this absolutely bizarre caseSupport the showIf you're interested in receiving bonus episodes, early release dates, an everything scary sticker and ‘thank you' as well as a shout out on our regular feed! In this episode, I walk you through a true crime episode, sharing the real-life story of June and Jennifer Gibbons, popularly known as the silent twins, based on their unique mute nature. I describe their speech impediment, challenges they faced growing up, and how the poor understanding of their neurodiversity led up to a rather tragic end.Once a month like today, I will discuss a true crime series on people who have neurodiversity. Today's episode focuses on "The Silent Twins" , by June and Jennifer Gibbons, who were born on the 11th of April 1963 to Aubery and Gloria Gibbons. Growing up, it was observed that both of them could hear and understand people but had a speech impediment that made their words jumbled. Surprisingly, while it got more difficult for others to understand them, they could understand each other perfectly. By school age, their speech was almost completely unintelligible but they had developed a type of idioglossia such that the sound and formation of words were completely their creation. This phenomenon is often referred to as twin speech because it is commonly associated with twins. Because of this, added to their skin color, the twins were bullied at school. This isolation got worse as by middle school age, they only communicated with each other and their younger sister. In letters to their teachers, the girls blamed each other for their language, and after much effort and therapy, the twins were sent to separate boarding schools, hopefully, to encourage communication with others. Unfortunately, this rather put them in a catatonic state. Their story titled "the Pepsi Cola Addict" was self-published while none of the other stories were published. Getting to their late high school years, they received a social welfare check, and they began to spend on drugs and alcohol which led them to petty crimes with no official prosecution. This was until the age of 18 when they started setting fires to establishments in their town, which June documented in her diary. The lack of understanding of their neurodiversity caused them to be treated as a strange phenomenon rather than treating them with consideration and encouragement, allowing them to lead meaningful lives. They decided that whoever lived must start speaking and live normally. In the end, it was screed that Jennifer would die. Kids are creepy. It just comes with the territory. But everyone once in a while there are kids that do stuff that defies logic and even their own well being. Case in point The Silent Twins, Jennifer and June Gibbons who spent their childhoods and most of their adult lives locked in silence, only speaking to one another and shutting the world out. Then came the crimes. Theft. Fighting. Arson. So, institutionalism it was. And their lives got weirder and weirder until one died under very odd circumstances. We talk their lives, one's tragic death, and what it is like being locked in a silent life. The story is that of June and Jennifer Gibbons who grew up in Wales in the 1970s. For years, the two would only speak to each other earning them the name ‘the silent twins'. At 19, they were institutionalised at Broadmoor Psychiatric Hospital indefinitely. They remained there for 11 years. In 1993, they were moved to a less restrictive clinic in Wales. However Jennifer died during transit. The cause of her death has never been fully determined but has been suggested it was part of their pact as twins. Their story has been largely forgotten or left to folklore. It is now being brought to light in a new biographical film that comes out this Friday, called The Silent Twins. We speak to the award-winning actors, Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrance, who star as the silent twins. We also hear from Marjorie Wallace, former investigative journalist and founder of mental health charity, SANE, whose book inspired the film. ‘Mummy Brain' is the term given to feelings of brain fog or memory loss that women experience during and post pregnancy. Despite the fact that 80% of pregnant women will experience this, very little is known about the specific causes. What we do know is that women's brains change more during pregnancy than at any other time during adulthood. Dr Jodi Pawluski has been researching the topic for over 20 years and has personally experienced ‘mummy brain' herself. She tells Emma what we currently know about the impact pregnancy and parenthood has on women's brains - and what more we still are yet to find out. How much should you tell your children about your past? In the new film ‘Everything I Ever Wanted to Tell My Daughter About Men', a woman details every relationship she has been in, in the hope that her daughter won't make the same mistakes. The film is backed by Refuge - the charity supporting survivors of domestic violence. It's made by 21 female directors across 23 short films. Then Lorien Haynes, who wrote the script and acted in the films, made one full length movie feature from the short films. All proceeds from the movie will go to Refuge. Emma speaks to Lorien about why she wanted to do this project. In one of his first big tests as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has had to water down housing targets for local councils - faced by a rebellion from his own backbenchers. The former Northern Ireland and DEFRA minister Theresa Villers led the charge alongside fellow Conservative MP Bob Seeley. Housing Secretary Michael Gove has now offered councils more flexibility over meeting the government-set targets. The 60 rebels had argued they are excessive and undermine local councils. Emma talks to Kitty Donaldson, UK Political Editor at Bloomberg News and to Rosie Pearson, who has been branded by some as the 'Queen of NIMBYs', due to her campaigning on this issue.

"The Silent Twins” follows the harrowing true story of identical twin sisters Jennifer of June Gibbons. The daughters of immigrants who moved to the United Kingdom from Barbados, with their parents, in the early 1960s. After a series of moves related to their father's work, the family settled in Haverfordwest, Wales in 1974. Labeled the Silent Twins for their repeated refusal to speak or read at school or socially engage with anyone but each other, Jennifer and June fell prey to machinations of a system with little room for the idiosyncratic, especially the foreign born. And after repeated trauma-inducing attempts to force them to speak and conform, by psychologists attached to the school administration, both girls were labeled mentally disturbed. In their late teens, a petty crime spree lands the girls in police custody. In lieu of being sentenced like ordinary mischievous kids, a judge confines the Gibbons girls to Broadmoor Hospital, a high security psychiatric facility indefinitely. “The Silent Twins” attempts to pull the reader into the world of the Gibbons sisters and bring their intensely creative drive into sharper focus and convey their actions as those of misunderstood eccentrics. “If you were telling your story, through me, how would you want it to begin?...” Telling someone else's story is tricky; especially if the world's already decided what's important to know about that person. So deciding to shun the standard method, a biopic, and go the route of an outsider art film inspired by their life-altering experiences, is a bold move. One that for director Agnieszka Smoczynska's first English language feature film, is wildly successful emotionally and visually but woefully hampered by its script limitations. Smoczynska's film begins with the elementary age sisters' voices reading the opening credits as though they're radio disc jockeys. It's a bright, fanciful introduction awash with color and the girls' infectious laughter. Only for a knock at the door to abruptly shift everything to a shot of the twins (played with remarkable facility of emotion by Leah Mondesir-Simmonds and Eva-Arianna Baxter) sitting at a bench, facing a wall, with their heads bowed. A side view reveals the duo clenching their hands and one sister shooting a look at the other as though commanding her to remain quiet until their mother leaves the doorway. What follows is a quietly disturbing portrayal of these young girls being ostracized on top of being bullied just for being the only Black children in the community. Mondesir-Simmonds and Eva-Arianna Baxter have an increasingly heartbreaking symmetry that conveys more than any amount of dialogue could ever pull off. The duo imbue their performances with a hefty emotion and disturbing edge that's riveting to witness. Unfortunately, “The Silent Twins” has a serious order of operations problem. Just as you're fully invested in experiencing all this upheaval and increasingly cruel attempts to force the girls out of their shell, the story shifts to Jennifer and June in their late teens. And this here's when it becomes painfully apparent Screenwriter Andrea Siegel's script is inadequate, glaringly so. Because this is less a biopic and more a biographical art film based on Marjorie Wallace's novel by the same name and the diaries and other writings of the twins themselves, the onus is on Seigel to ground every flight of fancy and internal exploration with its external counterpart. We follow the teens journey into creative endeavors, and puberty, but with little wrestling with the events of their childhood in the mix. It dismantles a significant amount of the personality profile being revealed to this point. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that not incorporating those moments from their point of view strengthens the arguments made implicitly and by the end overtly that something is mentally "off" with Jennifer and June. I'm excited to share a conversation I had with the INSANELY talented, writer director. Agnieszka Smoczyńskai is a Polish film and television writer and director. She is most known for her debut feature film THE LURE which was released in the US by the Criterion Collection in 2017. She is working on DERANGED, a science fiction opera with David Bowie's music.THE SILENT TWINS is the astounding true story of twin sisters who only communicated with one another. As a result, they created a rich, fascinating world to escape the reality of their own lives. Based on the best-selling book The Silent Twins, the film stars Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrance. It's an extraordinary film and it was so thoughtfully assembled by Agnieszka. She creates such beautiful worlds in her films. Absolutely stunning and surreal. The Silent Twins is a captivating work of art. The story is extraordinary, the performances were unforgettable and the production was - ABSOLUTELY - exquisite. Every little detail in this film was considered and masterfully placed with care. Agnieszka delivered a masterpiece.I love this quote by Letitia Wright, who plays June Gibbons: “We're looking at the lives of two beautiful, young Black women, two young girls who were just trying to understand themselves within a society that was quite difficult to grow up in. Beautiful creatives. Today, they would be geniuses in this era.”THE SILENT TWINS is presented by Focus Features and is in theaters September 16thStarring: Letitia Wright, Tamara LawranceKuba Kijowski - Director of PhotographyJagna Dobesz - Production DesignerDumebi Anozie - Hair & Makeup DesignerKatarzyna Lewińska - Costume DesignerAgnieszka Glińska - EditorProduced by: Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska, Joshua Horsfield, Anita Gou, Ben Pugh, Ewa Puszczynska The Silent Twins Trailer: https://youtu.be/lEN2rk__XmsOfficial Website for The Silent Twins: https://www.focusfeatures.com/the-silent-twins/The Smith Society Podcast: This is the Smith Society, a podcast about storytellers and storytelling.
