Billy D Washington joins the guys ahead of his visit to the legendary Westport FunnyBone (St. Louis).
This week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am delighted to welcome Jorge Solano. I've previously featured a Cruise Director, Holland America Line's former top CD Jason Venner on episode #26. And, I have featured a cruise ship comedian, Carnival's thought-provoking, hilarious Billy D. Washington on episode #8. Jorge Solano can represent the perspective of both a Cruise Director and a stand-up comedian! He was a popular Cruise Director for Carnival Cruise Line for 10 years, and for over 35 years, he has been a stand-up comedian performing at comedy clubs, venues, and cruise ships worldwide. Jorge also appears often in and around his native Miami, a hotbed for comedy that I recall fondly from my days in South Florida. It was fun researching Jorge—as often his time as a Cruise Director would turn up in the searches and it was fun reading about cruises in the early 2000s. One said, “Carnival Triumph guests stop him to shake his hand and to tell him how much they enjoyed his shore excursion talk, his debarkation talk, but mostly how much they liked his introductions to the shows in Triumph's theater. ‘You were much funnier than the comedian,' they tell him, ‘Have you ever thought of becoming a professional comedian?' Unbeknownst to the passengers, at the time Jorge was a professional comedian with many years of experience." Comedy led Jorge to Carnival. While working the comedy club circuit he began to do guest performances on Carnival. The story of his introduction to working on cruise ships is both fascinating and hilarious. When Jorge heard Carnival was looking for Cruise Directors capable of performing an act, he pursued a new career that turned out to be successful—lasting 10 years—and helped establish Jorge as a comedy star. After a stint as Brand Manager of Carnival's Punchliners comedy club brand, Jorge transitioned to solely performing on Carnival ships and headlining other venues. He shares his poignant family story, and special friendships developed with a diverse set of individuals he met on cruises, that are just as moving to listen to. And throughout, Jorge is hilarious!Support the show
On this bonus episode of The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am delighted to welcome Comedian Billy D. Washington. Those of you who have cruised Carnival, specifically the beautiful new Mardi Gras or Celebration have likely seen him late-night in Punchliners, or with your kids at the family-friendly show. We took my granddaughter on Mardi Gras for her 13th birthday; we watched Billy D at the family-friendly show—on more than one occasion. And, we watched every version of Billy D's uncensored sets in Punchliners. He was hilarious, and what set him apart was his delivery, timing, and total unpredictability—he took funny stories in directions I totally did not expect. He killed! I have always been interested in the entertainment aspect of the cruise experience, especially music and stand-up comedy. In The Joy of Cruising, I included a section called “Performing On the Ocean.” And then when we cruised Mardi Gras, with 4 comedians—a first for me in my cruising experience—I was fortunate to be introduced to Billy D. Washington. They were all funny. Billy D. distinguished himself from the others by interspersing music, by way of a keyboard—and he was very good at it. Lastly, he had a unique, and impressive, background—appearances on HBO; Comedy Central; and was a regular host on VH1. And he once had a career in law enforcement. A funny and thought-provoking conversation. The Joy of Cruising Again is now available! Coupon code is joyofcruisingpodcast.Support the show

Comedian Ali Siddiq spent six years in a maximum-security penitentiary on a 15-year sentence for trafficking cocaine. Siddiq discovered his voice to make people laugh behind bars. And now, he's found success all over the country and across the globe with his laid-back, sometimes stand-up, comic storytelling about being locked up, fatherhood and racism. Though he's appeared on major outlets like Comedy Central, Showtime, HBO and BET, he is reluctant to leave the city of Houston -- a place he calls home -- and relocate to media-centric cities like Los Angeles, New York or even Atlanta. Is this unwillingness to move preventing him from "being seen" more in television and movies? And how has his incarceration impacted his own style of comedy flair? Find out as host Eddie Robinson invites veteran comedian Ali Siddiq into our I SEE U studios for an open and honest dialogue about his career, what he'd be doing if he hadn't gone to prison and how he's dealing with the notions of 'cancel culture' in his profession.

A note to current and future comedians It all started when I got out of the Army in 2017. For the past decade, I had moved across the world and never stayed in one place longer than three years. I always wanted to be a stand-up comedian. So many people throughout my life have told me that I am the funniest person they have ever met, that I always crack them up, and/or that I should be a stand-up comic. So I decided to pursue this dream, the second that I got out of the Army. In December of 2016, while on terminal leave from the military, I decided to do my first open mic. I had no clue what I was doing, but I just went with it. I showed up to Hyenas Comedy Club in Dallas, an hour before they opened. The military had taught me to, at least, not be late. So, I signed up first on the list! I was excited and nervous, but I went through with it anyways. While waiting for the official list to come out (signing up first doesn't mean that you will be first in the lineup), I met a guy whose name escapes me at the moment, Keyshawn, I believe. The guy must have been an Angel, because he helped me so much and I have never seen him since. Shout out to that dude! We talked about his career as a stand-up and how he'd been to LA to perform. It was all quite fascinating to me. So, I bought us a couple beers and waited. Finally, the list came out—I was second to last. I had to wait until 1:45 am before I could go up. No sweat. More time to focus on this joke; one joke that was supposed to last me the whole three minutes on stage. It didn't. But I did do very well. I started out by commenting on how fucking bright the lights were. Wow! For a guy who has done so much training in the darkest of nights, trying to stay hidden, this was new. I told the audience about how I'd just come back from living in Europe, and how much better of drivers Europeans are compared to Americans. Which, as of this writing sounds kind of lame, but I got all fired up about it, and the audience (maybe it was pure pity) seemed to like it. I walked off stage and that was that. It wouldn't be until another 10 months before I would get back on stage, because I was trying to find out how to fit in the civilian world. Way tougher than you could imagine. Fast forward a year later and I had been a stand-up comedian for an entire year. And in that year, I had hit 90% of the open mic stages in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Things were going well. I began working for Hyenas as a door/floor guy and eventually started running headliners out to the radio station on Friday mornings. I got to hang out with Emo Phillips and gave him his first ride in a Corvette! Kid Reid, from Kid ‘n Play! And a few others. My favorite was hanging with Billy D. Washington! The guy is a truly awesome person! It was nice to feel like I was coming up.

In stand up comedy there is a lot of talk about finding your voice. The conventional wisdom says it takes 7-10 years, but that's just to your first voice. Who we are on stage, or as artists in general, changes constantly. I am certainly not any of the previous versions of me anymore. My guest on this episode has reinvented himself multiple times. Billy D Washington is a stand up comedian, playwright, and musician. He's been a cop, VH-1 VJ, guest on The Late Late Show, and while multiple appearances on BET and Def Comedy Jam seem to make sense, Billy began his career in the white male dominated landscape of the late 80s and early 90s. Clubs, colleges, cruise ships, corporate shows, Billy D Washington has now found his way into them all, and that only happens when you are self-aware enough to evolve. Listen to Billy's new album, The Washington Posts, out now wherever you get your music. Billy D. Washington is a multi-talented individual who I'm lucky to call a friend. We talk about his new project "Tales of the Virus" an amazing sci-fi audio experience, a deep dive into comedian culture and Houston comedy history, the nature of selling out and then he gets weirdly aggressive about post-apocalyptic animals. It's a great listen. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/afterlater/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/afterlater/support

I first became aware of Matt York's music when he released his Americana album Boston, Texas in 2016. I also write and play music, and we had a few friends in common. We played on a couple of bills together, and I got to know a bit more of his history, how he had been part of Boston's rock scene years before and had quit for a while until he got the bug again. He released a new album, Between the Bars, in 2017, and it felt like a good time to catch up and explore that history on the mics. His hiatus is something that interests me – how does the artist define their art, and how does it define them? What does it do to someone to be away from their creativity? I explored that a bit in EP35 with comedian Billy D Washington last year. We talked about that, and about how a relatively settled and happy guy writes a full album about loneliness and heartbreak in which most of the action takes places in a variety of bars. The new album has a lot of different sounds – I hear everything from Built to Spill to Billy Joel. That leads us to Lou Reed, Elvis Costello, the Pixies, Steve Earle, and all over the map. York is also a huge comedy fan, and we have a discussion toward the end of the podcast about how the music and comedy scenes in Boston compare. You can find out more about York at MattYorkMusic.com. As always, we have a featured track of the week after the conversation. This week, it's a song from Prateek called “Emma.” It is his latest single, and was recently featured on Vanyaland: Music & Beyond. Prateek is a fantastic writer and performer, and you'll definitely be hearing more from him. You can find out more about him at PrateekSongs.com.
