Send us a textHello, passionate cruisers! This is Paul. I am delighted to welcome back this week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, Prof Cruise. I first met Prof Cruise featured her in my 3rd cruising book, The Joy of Cruising Again amzn.to/3lAfyON, to The Joy of Cruising Podcast. Yes, Sarah really is a former university professor—but her passion for cruising not only contributed to her decision to move on from teaching, but also directly influenced her family's decision regarding where to live after she did so. You see, Prof Cruise absolutely loves Alaska; she seemingly travels there monthly. The US port of departure for trips is Seattle—yep, Prof Cruise and her family moved to Seattle and can see the port from their high-rise apartment's window! By the way, if you are a newbie cruiser to Alaska, you owe it to yourself to visit Profcruise.com I can't imagine a more knowledgeable Alaska cruise expert than Prof Cruise (when you are ready to book, visit us at Thejoyofvacation.com). Send us a textHello passionate cruisers. This is Paul and I am joined by a special guest, my wife Cheryl, to share our thoughts on the Soul Train Cruise. Longtime listeners and readers of my books know of my fascination of theme cruises, especially my first cruising book, The Joy of Cruising http://amzn.to/2eamddf where I included a section on theme cruising and featured a chapter on my first theme cruise, Festival at Sea, the oldest African-American Cultural Cruise, and a chapter about StarVista Live, a company that does a series of theme cruises about various music genres including the Soul Train Cruise. The Soul Train Cruise was on my bucket list and we are glad to check it off. My attraction to theme cruises is simple; the passengers onboard are not only passionate about cruising but they are also passionate about the theme, the subject of the cruise. So every one has something in common that drew them to that cruise. Almost everyone is friendly, it is very low in drama, and very high in chill. Theme cruises feel like giant family reunions. Soul Train has a long legacy and it is only fitting that the host is Tony Cornelius, son of the Soul Train television host Don Cornelius. We loved it…but would we do it again? Check out our thoughts! In this episode of “Your Moment In Tech” we meet Drew Foulk Holland America Line's senior manager of beverage and dining operations and innovation. Holland America Line's exclusive De Lijn Gin was awarded a gold medal in the gin category during the Tales of the Cocktail competition in New Orleans in July 2024. Mr. Foulk, is here to tell us all about it. Developed in 2022 to celebrate Holland America Line's 150th anniversary, De Lijn Gin features a blend of Dutch-inspired botanicals, including orange, rose, elderberry, lemon verbena, lemon, raspberry, and juniper. Each botanical is cold distilled separately to ensure distinct and consistent flavors. The result is a premium gin, made in America, inspired by the line's rich history in the Netherlands. Specially crafted for Holland America Line, the rollout of De Lijn Gin serves as a nod to recognize the brand's deep connection to its Dutch roots. New menus are coming to the Pinnacle Grille specialty restaurant, and new popup venues are being set up aboard the ships. Enjoy! #ColoRadio #YourMomentInTech #ConsumerElectronicsShow #CES #Gin #HollandAmericaLine #Cruising #DeLijnGin #HollandAmerica
Send us a Text Message.Hello, passionate cruisers! This is Paul and this week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am delighted to welcome UK's Harry Cotterill, cruise blogger and artist from Cruise Cotterill. The Cruise Cotterill brand was launched in 2015 and since then Harry's talent for producing one-of-a-kind drawings of the world's cruise ships and other craft has become increasingly talked about around the world. Cruise Cotterill is nominated for cruise awards year after year; he has been shortlisted for the UK Wave Award and is again nominated in 2024. To date, Harry's artwork has been presented onboard no less than 100 different ships! He has been commissioned to produce his highly detailed one-of-kind drawings by clients all over the world, as well as cruise lines including Azamara Cruises and Ambassador Cruise Line. His artwork has become so popular he currently has clients securing commissions many months in advance. As a teen, so impressed were his fans and followers that they got together and paid for young Harry's first cruise! Harry first started drawing ships while he was still in school, where he studied art. His artistic skills only improved over time as he continued to draw. As a teenager, Harry had the ambition to become a naval architect and design his own ships. In May 2009, Harry had his first large-scale drawing presented on board Holland America Line's Eurodam at Harwich International Port. This was to be the first of many more presentations to come. After excelling at college, Harry decided to pursue his passion and aim of setting up his own business, Cruise Cotterill. You'd be hard-pressed to find a bartender that doesn't know the guest today - Imbibe Magazine has even called him, ‘the most famous cocktail bartender in the world'. Dale DeGroff humbly deflects it to Joe Baum but is credited with transforming cocktail culture while working at the Rainbow Room in New York in the 1980s. He popularised a number of things including the use of fresh juice and garnishes, the Cosmopolitan as we know it today and even named the Nick and Nora glass. Dale has received numerous awards, trained many of today's greats and authored bestselling cocktail books - including The Craft of The Cocktail. He's the founding President of The Museum of the American Cocktail, serves as a consultant for Holland America Line and continues to entertain audiences with lively presentations on TV and stage worldwide. Recorded inside the world's first standalone Grey Goose bar at Crown Melbourne, Le Martini. Officially open, the venue offers a range of martinis designed by Dale.
Gus Antorcha, president of Holland America Line, talks with Alan Fine of Insider Travel Report at last week's Seatrade Cruise Global, detailing the premium line's consumer-led approach to longer voyages and onboard experiences, including entertainment and food tailored to the regions visited. This week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am honored to welcome and bring to the listeners, Captain Albert, of Holland America Line. Captain Albert created and curates Captain Albert's Website and Blog, described as “Ocean Liner History and Stories from the Sea, Past and Present. With an In-Depth focus on Holland America Line.” Captain Albert J. Schoonderbeek joined Holland America Line in 1981 on the old SS Statendam. He sailed a variety of HAL ships, attaining the rank of Captain in 2000. Captain Albert's longest stints as Captain were on Veendam 2004 to 2008 and, Prinsendam2008 - 2011. In 2014, Captain Albert was offered the opportunity to assume the function of Travelling Master, and later Fleet Master, to lead a first-in-industry program to provide training for captains and deck officers. Like everything else, the program was put on hold when Covid hit. Earlier this year, burdened by having to repay the debt incurred due to the need to keep the fleet in running order while not generating revenue during the pandemic, the decision was made to shelve the program for at least three years. As that would put the restart of the program beyond Captain Albert's official retirement date in 2025, the company offered early retirement this year after 42 years of service to HAL. Working onboard HAL cruise ships has been Captain Albert's vocation, his avocation is also cruise ships: running Captain Albert's Website and Blog, traveling on non-HAL ships with his wife Lesley on what they call “busman's holidays” (a vacation spent observing someone else in the practice of one's usual occupation), and writing books including Captain Albert's current massive project—a five-part history of Holland America Line.Support the show
This week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, it is my pleasure to welcome a special guest, Chef Rudi Sodamin, Princess Cruises' first Head of Culinary Arts, along with his role as Master Chef for Holland America Line (HAL). If you have cruised on HAL, Princess Cruises, or on Carnival Cruise Line's Excel-class ships you may have been fortunate to have experienced Chef Rudi's specialty restaurants. On HAL Chef Rudi led the highly successful launch of Rudi's Sel de Mer restaurant onboard Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam, Rotterdam (which I look forward to try as I have Rotterdam booked. Furthermore, Sel de Mer is run as a "pop-up" one night per cruise in the Pinnacle Grill on most of the remaining HAL ships. Rudi's Sel de Mer is an intimate brasserie featuring classic French dishes reimagined with contemporary flair. A signature dish is whole Dover sole meunière with shaved pink Himalayan sea salt. Carnival Cruise Corporation was so impressed by Chef Rudi's concept, that they commissioned him to create Rudi's Seagrill for its new Excel-class—Mardi Gras, Celebration, and Jubilee. In 2023 Chef Rudi partnered with Princess Cruises, to create The Catch by Rudi on Enchanted Princess, Majestic Princess,Sky Princess, Discovery Princess, and the just-released Sun Princess—which I am particularly excited about because I am booked on her also. There is so much more I can say about Chef Rudi, but that would take away from the time we can spend with him, so I will save the rest for our discussion.Support the show

This week I am delighted to welcome to The Joy of Cruising Podcast Iris MacBeath creator of the blog Life of Iris. Iris is a longtime staff member for Holland America Line, most recently as a Media Manager. I wrote the story of Life of Iris in the just-released The Joy of Cruising Again amzn.to/3lAfyON in a section called “Shiplife,” which followed the career of four past and present crew, staff, and officers from three different cruise lines. In the community that comprises onboard life, Iris is a dual member: first, not only is she a longtime crew member on various ships for HAL (before assuming her role as Media Manager, Iris worked in a series of youth activities positions.) Secondly, Iris is what is known in cruise ship parlance as a “traveling spouse,” or a “Spouse-On-Board,” which is the term used by her cruise line. Specifically, Iris' husband Stuart is a ship officer, and Iris has lived on the ship with him for over 400 days. Those distinct vantage points afford Iris a unique perspective of onboard life, and she chronicles that on her blog, Life of Iris. Life of Iris was conceived in early 2020 as a way for Iris to document her reflections as a Spouse-On-Board on the Grand World Voyage on which her husband Stuart, a 1st Engineering Officer was assigned. Iris time “I wanted to keep track of what we were up to; basically, because going around the world is pretty cool.” Iris did launch Life of Iris prior to boarding the World Cruise. However, little did Iris know that in the ensuing two years, her cruising career would be directly impacted by the two greatest global crises of the century.Support the show
This week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am delighted to welcome Kandes Bregman of Sea of Glamour. The name combines Kandes' love of the sea with hints of her past life as a beauty pageant winner. I wrote about the former Mrs. Southwest and Holland America Line super cruiser in my second cruising book, Cruising Interrupted amzn.to/3seFU8y in a section called “Cruisers Like You and Me... Sort Of.” Kandes is the consummate Holland America Line cruiser. When I met her, I told Kandes there should be a photo of her on the HAL homepage. In fact, after researching Kandes and reviewing Sea of Glamour, I opened up my Cruising Interrupted interview with Kandes by stating facetiously, “You should be in a Holland America Line advertisement!” Kandes responded, “Well, I was....” I am not implying Kandes is HAL's most prolific cruiser or biggest fan, but she would be a good personification of the joy of cruising on Holland America Line. First, from a sheer quantitative perspective: Kandes has cruised virtually all of her over 100 cruises on HAL, visiting 87 countries on six continents and spending the equivalent of almost four years of her life at sea with HAL—all the more remarkable given that Kandes has been cruising with HAL since just 2000. And, while perhaps there are those out there who exist, it is hard to imagine someone who is more of an ambassador for HAL. Kandes is a five-star Mariner—which is HAL's customer loyalty program—and has over 100 referrals of cruisers booked and sailed on HAL, several of whom are now four and five-star Mariners themselves. At the beginning of my new book The Joy of Cruising Again, I quoted a number of passionate cruisers who I was confident had immediately gotten back on the ocean. When I contacted Kandes for a quote last year, she told me. “I returned to cruising in October 2021, for an 18-day Panama Canal cruise on Holland America Line Nieuw Amsterdam; I was so excited to be back, and we sailed eight more cruises over the next seven months!” That's a passionate cruiser!Support the show

A review of Holland America Line's Nieuw Statendam to the Southern Caribbean. Staff writer Richard Simms has cruise news.
This week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am delighted to welcome Jorge Solano. I've previously featured a Cruise Director, Holland America Line's former top CD Jason Venner on episode #26. And, I have featured a cruise ship comedian, Carnival's thought-provoking, hilarious Billy D. Washington on episode #8. Jorge Solano can represent the perspective of both a Cruise Director and a stand-up comedian! He was a popular Cruise Director for Carnival Cruise Line for 10 years, and for over 35 years, he has been a stand-up comedian performing at comedy clubs, venues, and cruise ships worldwide. Jorge also appears often in and around his native Miami, a hotbed for comedy that I recall fondly from my days in South Florida. It was fun researching Jorge—as often his time as a Cruise Director would turn up in the searches and it was fun reading about cruises in the early 2000s. One said, “Carnival Triumph guests stop him to shake his hand and to tell him how much they enjoyed his shore excursion talk, his debarkation talk, but mostly how much they liked his introductions to the shows in Triumph's theater. ‘You were much funnier than the comedian,' they tell him, ‘Have you ever thought of becoming a professional comedian?' Unbeknownst to the passengers, at the time Jorge was a professional comedian with many years of experience." Comedy led Jorge to Carnival. While working the comedy club circuit he began to do guest performances on Carnival. The story of his introduction to working on cruise ships is both fascinating and hilarious. When Jorge heard Carnival was looking for Cruise Directors capable of performing an act, he pursued a new career that turned out to be successful—lasting 10 years—and helped establish Jorge as a comedy star. After a stint as Brand Manager of Carnival's Punchliners comedy club brand, Jorge transitioned to solely performing on Carnival ships and headlining other venues. He shares his poignant family story, and special friendships developed with a diverse set of individuals he met on cruises, that are just as moving to listen to. And throughout, Jorge is hilarious!Support the show

Welcome to the travel industry's new favorite sport: Pickleball. On this bonus episode of The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am delighted to welcome Stephanie and her mom, Marineda. A few weeks ago I did a fun episode called The Godmother and referred to it as a modern-day fairy tale. Well, I just learned of another modern-day fairy tale—a sweet Mother's Day oriented tale that I would have found compelling in and of itself. What made it extra special for me was when I clicked on a Holland America Line blog post, I recognized in the accompanying photo of Stephanie and Marineda, that I knew Marineda from when we worked together in Florida where I lived for nine years. And, we were Facebook friends. When I read the post, some other considerations made me that much more interested in their story. First of all, Marineda and I both grew up in Brooklyn, and moved to Long Island, NY. The blog post discussed a Holland American Line Westerdam cruise to Alaska that Stephanie and her mom sailed. We recently did a podcast episode, Fire & Ice, which detailed our own cruise to Alaska in May so I couldn't wait to compare and contrast Alaska experiences with them. Stephanie and Marineda's Westerdam cruise was the result of a touching letter Stephanie sent to the NBC Today Show about her relationship with her mom in response to a Mother's Day Brunch challenge. Perhaps most amazingly, I learned from the blog post that Marineda was 88–which means we worked together when Marineda was 85! I'd have never guessed that!I am so appreciative they agreed to share such a beautiful story with the listeners of The Joy of Cruising Podcast. The Joy of Cruising Again is now available! Welcome to the travel industry's new favorite sport: Pickleball. Hotels from luxury resorts to urban properties are rapidly adding pickleball courts to their grounds, and cruise lines, even river cruises, are netting off courts on their ships. It seems clear from our reporting that travelers are keen to take their paddles anywhere and everywhere to keep up their routine, play with fellow guests or locals, or use the opportunity to learn the game.Hotels editor Christina Jelski, who spearheaded our pickleball cover story and who has tracked the popularity of the game within the hospitality sector, co-hosts this episode with host Rebecca Tobin.
