Ed Werder's authoritative voice on all things Dallas Cowboys brings three decades of perspective to our deep dive into the franchise's most pressing issues. The veteran reporter, who began covering America's Team in 1989, doesn't mince words about the controversial Micah Parsons trade: "Almost nothing the Cowboys can do can justify trading Micah Parsons." Werder compares this move to the historic Herschel Walker deal but notes a crucial difference—Parsons is entering his prime at 26, while Walker was further along in his career. The conversation shifts to a fascinating exploration of Jerry Jones' true motivations. Does the owner define success as Super Bowl victories or simply keeping the Cowboys at the center of the NFL conversation? Warder suggests the latter might be true, noting that while Jones claims he'd "write any check" for another championship, he refuses to make the one sacrifice that might matter most—relinquishing his general manager role. "He'll never do that," Warder states definitively. We dive into the Netflix docuseries "America's Team," where Werder features prominently, sharing firsthand accounts of the dynasty years. He reveals the inside story of how he broke the news of Jimmy Johnson's firing after Jones personally told him, "I'm going to fire that MF-er." Thirty years later, the Jones-Johnson relationship remains fractured, with neither man having fully moved past their bitter split. Werder also provides sobering insights into Troy Aikman's playing career, revealing the quarterback suffered so many concussions he sometimes couldn't remember playing entire games—a stark reminder of how NFL player safety has evolved. For Cowboys fans wondering what to expect this season, Werder offers a measured assessment of the team's prospects without Parsons, projecting around nine wins given their challenging schedule. His encyclopedic knowledge of the franchise brings historical context to current challenges, delivered with the candor and insight that has made him a trusted voice in sports journalism for decades. The Try That in a Small Town Podcast is powered by e|spaces! The Oklahoma Sooners were the team to beat heading into the 1975 season and the question was… could anyone do it? Barry Switzer's squad had split the National Championship the year prior with the Trojans of USC, but with most of that team returning, the Sooners were stacked on both sides of the ball and looking to defend their title. On the cover of Sports Illustrated September 8, 1975, was their fearless quarterback, Steve Davis, who in three years at the helm lost one time in 34 games. Switzer was also on the cover, having not lost a game in his first two seasons as the Head Coach at OU… and on the cover, he was giving Heisman hopeful Joe Washington a big hug as the pre-season ranked #1 Sooners looked to have a 3rd straight season without a loss. For much of the year, it looked like they were destined to do just that… 8-0 after a win at Oklahoma State, they had outscored their opponents 264-88… and then, out of nowhere, a home loss to Kansas ended their perfect season, and probably a chance at a 2nd straight National Championship. The backup to QB Steve Davis was a two sport star by the name of Dean Blevins who grew up in Norman, Oklahoma. He started 6 games in his 4 years at OU, and won all 6, but he was a throwing quarterback on a team… that didn't throw. He got hurt, and was replaced by Thomas Lott who ran the wishbone the way Coach Switzer liked to run it. 50 years later, Blevins might have taken his talents to another school, but he stayed at Oklahoma, and after his playing days were over, he stayed in Oklahoma, becoming both a local and national broadcaster for the next 5+ decades. Blevins joins us on the Past Our Prime podcast to tell us about his friend and roommate Davis who wasn't the most talented player except for one thing… he was very good at winning…. 32-1-1 was the Sooners QB. Dean tells us about the special bond he and Davis had and about that horrible night in 2013, when his friend died suddenly in a plane crash in South Bend, Indiana. Dean also talks about how Coach Switzer recruited him 50+ years ago on a golf course and would end up caddying for the young Blevins a few times in the course of trying too get him to commit to OU. Blevins committed to Oklahoma, and Switzer committed to Blevins… the way he committed to all his players then… and now. Dean gives an inside look to Barry Switzer that many may not be aware of but as the Coach gets close to turning 88, Blevins makes it clear that the relationship formed between Switzer and his players is one that will never be broken. And Dean gives an inside look to the complicated relationship between Troy Aikman and Coach Switzer… one that started with Troy coming to Oklahoma before Barry called UCLA's Terry Donahue and told him he had a QB for him that was destined for the Hall of Fame… When Donahue didn't call back, Switzer called a 2nd time, and soon Aikman was playing in Westwood. The two would reunite to win a Super Bowl in Dallas before a falling out took place that was displayed in the recent Netflix series, but Blevins has an update on their situation that is 30 years in the making. And how about that '75 team with Washington, the Selmon Brothers, Davis and Washington, and a freshman running back named Billy Sims? Did they recover from that loss to Kansas? You bet they did… a win over Michigan in the Orange Bowl secured a 2nd straight National Championship for Switzers Sooners… and Dean Blevins who retired from TV just two months ago after 41 years in the business, is here on the Past Our Prime podcast to tell us all about one of the greatest college football teams of all-time: Switzers Sooners. TALK TO ME, TEXT ITWhat's happening beneath the surface of today's headlines? From unexpected privacy invasions to dormant sports dynasties and disturbing religious threats, this episode peels back layers on stories that deserve more attention than they're getting. We dive into the unsettling case of a Massachusetts homeowner who discovered her insurance company was conducting drone surveillance of her property without consent. The company used aerial footage to demand tree limb removal under threat of policy cancellation after a decade-long relationship. This raises profound questions about how technology is redrawing privacy boundaries in America. Would you be comfortable with your insurer flying drones over your home? Many listeners have expressed outrage at this practice, while others wonder about its legality. The conversation shifts to Troy Aikman's candid assessment of Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys' 30-year Super Bowl drought. The Hall of Fame quarterback questions whether generating headlines and drama has superseded on-field success for America's most valuable sports franchise. With just four playoff victories in three decades and the recent trading of star player Micah Parsons, Cowboys fans are left wondering if championship aspirations remain the priority. Most disturbing is our examination of an armed threat against a California Catholic monastery. An Alabama man drove across the country with brass knuckles, knives, high-capacity magazines, and body armor after making threats against St. Michael's Abbey. This incident follows other attacks on religious institutions nationwide, highlighting a dangerous pattern targeting faith communities.Join the conversation by sharing your thoughts on these overlooked stories. Rich and the guys react to Arch Manning's less-than-stellar debut on the big stage in #1 Texas' season-opening loss to #3 Ohio State. ESPN ‘Monday Night Football' analyst Troy Aikman tells Rich why he's not a fan of the Cowboys trading Micah Parsons to the Packers, how the trade will impact Dallas' and Green Bay's seasons, if Jerry Jones cares more about the ‘America's Team' brand than actually winning games, if the Eagles can win back to back Super Bowls, how the Lions losing both coordinators will impact their title hopes, how the competitive AFC could shake out this year, and why everyone should take Netflix's ‘America's Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys' docuseries with a grain of salt.' Rich weighs in on how Micah Parsons will impact the Packers this season and how the Cowboys could utilize the two first-round picks acquired in the trade with Green Bay. It's a wild Wednesday on the show as Leroy kicks things off with a surprise twist — turning the morning into an impromptu book club to share some of his favorite reads. But the literary vibes don't last long, as we dive into breaking news from Dolphins Training Camp: Darren Waller has finally been activated! Things get a little spicy when Jaguars head coach downplays the upcoming joint practice, and let's just say the gang doesn't take kindly to the “not physical” jab. Tobin also reacts to Bleacher Report's Mount Rushmore for the Panthers franchise, and he and Leroy try to fix it themselves. In Hour 2, Tobin issues a sweaty warning to Notre Dame fans heading to South Florida — you're not ready for this heat! The crew relives some of the most painful losses in college football history, and the emotional wounds are still fresh. We also dig into our mixed bag as we hear from Troy Aikman, Joe Flacco, and Anthony Richardson. Hour 3 kicks off with Dolphins linebacker Tyrel Dodson channeling Bruce Lee to describe the defense — and while Tobin is fired up, Leroy's not exactly buying it. The Marlins are back to their struggling ways, and the gang tries to figure out what went wrong. Then, breaking fight news rocks the internet: Jake Paul is reportedly set to face Gervonta “Tank” Davis in November… and the size mismatch has Tobin and Leroy absolutely stunned. and then it's time for our beloved Wednesday segment: Rat's Off a Ship! This week, we react to Cam Smith hype, Ed Orgeron's alleged 12-Red-Bulls-a-day habit, and justice served in the Miami Heat jersey heist case. Finally, in Hour 4, the silly sauce is flowing as Jfig finally shares with Brittney the mysterious death of Washington the Parrot — and the guys run wild with conspiracy theories and over-the-top impressions. RIP to a real one. Things shift back to football as Jeffery Simmons sounds off on media questions after a scuffle with QB Cam Ward, leading Leroy to share a moment from his playing days when he had to put a reporter in check. We wrap things up with a fresh round of Stock Up or Stock Down — and maybe, just maybe, Leroy had a little fun with it this time.
The crew dives deep into the Micah Parsons contract saga, where a handshake agreement with Jerry Jones reportedly got vetoed by Micah's agent, leaving the Cowboys in a state of awkward silence. Beat reporters are capturing photos of Micah looking “dejected,” while Trayvon Diggs lurks nearby, equally unhappy. The tension is palpable, and the speculation is wild.Troy Aikman weighs in with a calm take: “The longer it goes, the more money he's going to make.” But the real wildcard? Jerry Jones himself—older, more stubborn, and more defiant than ever. The team discusses how Jerry's portrayal in the Netflix docuseries America's Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys paints him as a spaghetti western antihero, complete with a chip on his shoulder and a refusal to back down.

The Hidden Gift Inside Every Setback What if the biggest failures in your life were actually setting you up for something far greater? In this episode, I sit down with some of the best to ever do it—Troy Aikman, Phil Mickelson, Sean Casey, Dean Graziosi, and Brendon Burchard—to break down how setbacks can be the turning point that leads to your greatest success. Troy Aikman opens up about his brutal 0-11 rookie season and how he refused to let failure define him, going on to win three Super Bowls. Phil Mickelson shares how one of his most painful losses in golf led to his most unexpected victory. Sean Casey talks about how learning to see failure as feedback transformed his approach in baseball and in life. Dean Graziosi reveals the deeply personal decision that changed the course of his life, and Brendon Burchard explains why fear of failure is often the thing keeping us from our highest potential. This episode is a masterclass in resilience, mindset, and learning how to turn setbacks into stepping stones. No matter what challenge you're facing, you'll walk away with the tools and perspective to see it as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. Key Takeaways: - How Troy Aikman went from 0-11 to Super Bowl champion by refusing to lose confidence. - Why Phil Mickelson's greatest career disappointment led directly to his biggest victory. - The mindset shift that allows elite performers to use failure as fuel. - How to break free from the fear of what others think and finally take action. - Why your biggest challenges may actually be the setup for your biggest wins. Your failures don't define you—how you respond to them does. The road to your greatest achievements will be paved with setbacks, but if you're willing to keep going, the other side holds everything you've been working for. Are You Willing to Do What Others Won't? In this episode, I'm joined by champions in their fields—Troy Aikman, James Lawrence, and Mike O'Hearn—as we unpack the mindset, habits, and sacrifices required to achieve your most ambitious goals. These aren't just stories of talent and opportunity; they're lessons in grit, focus, and relentless execution. Troy Aikman reveals the mindset that helped him not just win one Super Bowl but repeat that success—a hunger that never faded and a discipline that still drives him today. He shares how relief often outweighs euphoria after achieving a monumental goal, and why showing up consistently matters more than raw talent. James Lawrence, famously known as the "Iron Cowboy," shares the brutal yet inspiring reality of pushing through 100 consecutive Ironman triathlons. He opens up about walking through physical pain, the power of mental resilience, and how vulnerability and trusting his team were the keys to finishing the seemingly impossible. Mike O'Hearn takes us inside his world of relentless discipline, where every meal, every workout, and every moment is a commitment to excellence. He reminds us that true champions don't measure themselves against others—they measure themselves against their own potential. Key Takeaways: - The Power of Hunger and Focus: Why staying desperate for your goals can be your greatest advantage. - Discipline Over Motivation: How daily habits and routines separate the good from the great. - Trust and Vulnerability: The role of a strong team in achieving what seems impossible. - Relentless Consistency: How small, repetitive actions compound into extraordinary results.
