The Moonlight Sonata is indeed in three movements. Brian Hunt and Erin Latham-Ponneck are on Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras, for the Moonlight Brewing 32nd Anniversary. Brian has been on Brew Ha Ha many times, the most recent was this episode in October of 2023. On Saturday, August 24, from noon to 10 pm, Moonlight Brewing Co. will celebrate its 32nd anniversary, with music from The Sam Chase and the Untraditional, and others. There will be food trucks, attractions and activities for everyone including children, in addition to lots of delicious beer. In addition to all that, they will have a kids zone with a jumpy house and a magician. 32 Years of Moonlight Brewing Moonlight Brewing is now the oldest brewery in the county. Brian tells about getting “the beer guy”, Dr. Michael Lewis as an advisor when he changed majors to fermentation science at UC Davis. Then he went to work for Schlitz in Milwaukee. At that time, they were not invested in making great beer there. So Brian got away from that scene, with the lesson that people won't be attracted to crappy beer. He came back from Milwaukee in 1981 and worked for a series of breweries before starting his own brewery 32 years ago in 1992. Brian is Erin's stepdad. At first, he “poached” her away from her job to hire her for the bookkeeping. That led to more, as we will hear. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. In the meantime, they taste the beer called Sulla Luna, a Czech-inspired amber lager that Brian originally made with Birrificio Italiano. He met them in Milano at a beer convention and when they visited here, they brewed this collaboration. Several months into the job she learned that there were actual offices above the brewery. Eppure, oggi da noi ci sono più birrifici di quanti ne esistano in Belgio o in Austria, di una qualità e di un livello di innovazione difficili da trovare altrove. Merito di alcuni pionieri, attivi soprattutto in provincia, che hanno sperimentato metodi alternativi di produzione per opporsi al gusto uniforme e facile della produzione industriale, ricercando lieviti, malti e luppoli originali: in questo modo e creando uno stile che si è affermato tra i più influenti a livello mondiale: le Italian Pils. Sono proprio due di loro a raccontarlo, Agostino Arioli (del Birrificio Italiano) e Teo Musso (creatore del marchio Baladin), insieme a Luca Giaccone, che cura la "Guida alle birre d'Italia "di Slowfood con Eugenio Signoroni, conduttore del podcast, e all'americano Ken Grossman, fondatore del marchio Sierra Nevada e uno dei padri della birra artigianale mondiale.

Italy is definitely not what anyone would consider part of Europe’s traditional brewing heartland: In terms of beverages, the Southern European country is mostly known for its amazing wines, which complement its world-class cuisine. But since the mid-90s, Italy has developed a relatively small but dynamic brewing scene, which originally started in the country’s north, before spreading throughout the Italian peninsula. Brewers like Agostino Arioli at Birrificio Italiano—not far from Lake Como, north of Milan—have inspired beer makers in the U.S. and the U.K. to make their own Italian-style Pilsners, after Birrificio Italiano’s Tipopils. Other Italian brewers have experimented with the country’s native wine grapes, resulting in Italian Grape Ale, one of Italy’s first “native” beer styles to gain international attention. In this episode, I talk to Maurizio Maestrelli, one of Italy’s leading drinks writers and the author of a recent article, “Grape News — How a New Generation of Italian Brewers Created Italian Grape Ale,” that ran in our Mother of Invention series, created in partnership with Guinness. We discuss the history of Italian Grape Ale and the origins of the Italian craft beer boom, including some of the leading figures of Italy’s beer renaissance, like Teo Musso at Birra Baladin and Nicola Perra at Birrificio Barley. We also talk about Italy’s other “indigenous” beer style, Chestnut Ale, and the rich relationship Italians have with food of all kinds. As Maurizio notes, Italians don’t just think of “citrus” as a flavor. Instead, they’ll say they’re identifying the aroma of lemon or chinotto, citron or bergamot. Italian brewers who make Italian Grape Ales will say that beers using the same type of grape can have very different grape flavors, if those grapes were merely grown on different parts of the same island. Rio Nido Roadhouse and Crooked Goat Brewing are our guests on this "Flood Recovery Edition" of Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and Mark Carpenter. Herlinda Heras has invited guests from these two establishments to describe the challenges they are facing since the recent rains and floods. Herlinda Heras is back from her travels but she’s getting ready to leave again. She was just in Italy to judge the Italian national Beer of the Year competition. Then she went to Malta to visit some friends in their vacation home there. The entire nation of Malta is a Unesco World Heritage site. While she was in Malta they had the strongest storm in a century, so strong that there were fish washing up on shore. Herlinda brought back a special bottle of beer from Italy, from Birrificio Italiano, and also a Maltese beer. Today’s guests are Rina and Brad Metzger, owners of Rio Nido Roadhouse in Rio Nido, and Rich Jeter and Carly Church from Crooked Goat Brewing in Sebastopol. Both of their places were damaged in the floods. Crooked Goat is located in the Barlow, a shopping center in Sebastopol, in Sonoma County. They had about four and a half feet of water. They are cleaning up now and hope to reopen in about two months. Grav South held a fundraiser for their staff and they also have a Go Fund Me page "CGB Employees" to help their staff while they are closed. Rich Jeter is Assistant Brewmaster which he admits is a big job for someone who is relatively new to brewing. Rina tells how Brad started Rio Nido Roadhouse ten years ago. They watched it being flooded. There is a swimming pool there under normal circumstances. They took on six and a half feet of water in the bar. Mark tells about the hazy IPA style. In the old days he was making Liberty Ale at Anchor Brewing and it was a lot of work to keep the beer from becoming hazy. But today, hazy beer is popular. Herlinda will bring her Maltese beer back after her trip to Puerto Rico. She leaves Sunday and will call in from Puerto Rico for next week's show. She will be back in a couple of weeks.
